WE NEED YOUR HELP!WATERFORD – The Tri-State Emergency Team, headquartered in Waterford, provides the Greater Capital Region, New York State, Vermont and Western Massachusetts, with properly trained and equipped rescuers in land-based Search and Rescue operations and underwater rescues and recoveries, since 1958. We currently have 25 members and are always looking for more volunteers! The Team has two rescue trucks and two boats, which are always in need of updated and new equipment etc. On Friday, August 28 and Saturday, August 29, we will be conducting our “TAG DAYS”, on which we will be collecting donations at two locations in Waterford: Sara-toga Ave. and Clifton St. (N. of Waterford-Cohoes bridge) and at 1st St. and Broad St. (at the Waterford-Troy bridge). Please take the time to stop and donate---every little bit helps, as we are funded strictly by donations! Checks can be mailed to: Tri-State Emergency Team, P.O. Box 111, Waterford, NY 12188.You never know when you may need our services!

SARATOGA COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL EXHIBITION

CLIFTON PARK – A Saratoga County Arts Council “Art in Pub-lic Places” Exhibition is on display in the 2nd floor Gallery at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library, for the month of August. Featured is the textile and quilt work of the Quilt North Guild. The title of the exhibit is Small Works. This ex-hibit showcases smaller “wall” size quilts, as compared to the traditional “bed” size quilts, which our members create. The quilts show a range of skills and interests, from traditional ta-ble linens to artistic surfaces that might be more at home in a gallery setting. Piecing, appliqué, hand and machine quilting, dyeing, painting, embroidery all have a place in contempo-rary quilt making.

INSPECT TIRES BEFORE FALL ROAD TRIPSRoad trips are an autumn tradition for many people. Excursions to see the fall fo-liage can be awe-inspiring, but drivers must make sure their vehicles can handle such jaunts.

Tire inspections are essen-tial before hitting the open road. The following are a handful of steps drivers can take to ensure their tires are up to the task of fall road trips.

• Give tires the eye test. The eye test can be an eff ective and quick way to detect tire damage. Uneven wear may be indicative of insuffi cient tire pressure or an alignment problem. Uneven wear also may indicate the vehicle is experiencing problems with its steering or suspension. But many times uneven wear can be remedied by a simple tire rotation, so take your vehicle to your me-

chanic if you notice uneven wear.

• Look for stowaways. Un-even wear is not the only thing drivers can detect with their eyes. In the course of your travels, your tire might have picked up a few stow-aways, such as nails and screws that are poking into the tire. If you fi nd any free-loaders, take your car to your mechanic, as your tires may need to be replaced.

• Look for cracking or bulg-ing treads. Cracking or bulg-ing treads or sidewalls can eventually cause a blowout, which can put you and your fellow road trippers in seri-ous jeopardy. Cracked or bulging treads or sidewalls indicate tires are worn or weak, so bring your car to your mechanic for an in-spection if you discover such problems.

• Perform the penny test.

The penny test can help motorists determine if tire treads are worn. To perform the test, insert a penny with Abraham Lincoln’s head pointing upward into the tread. If the tread does not reach the top of Lincoln’s head, your tire’s treads are worn.

• Check tire pressure. Right before you pack up the car to hit the open road, check each of your tires’ pressure, making sure the pressure in each tire is at the level rec-ommended in your owner’s manual. Infl ating tires to the proper pressure takes just a minute or so, but that min-ute can protect you and your passengers while also saving you money at the fi lling sta-tion.

Properly maintained tires can go a long way toward ensuring the fall road trip season is a success.

SAFE SCHOOL CARPOOLINGStudents have a few diff er-ent options to get to and from school. In areas where school bus service is pro-vided, children have an easy way to get to class each day. But if no bus service is avail-able, students must be driv-en to school by their parents or neighbors.

Busy parents frequently ban together to form carpooling teams to ensure students get to school on time. Car-pooling is eco-friendly, con-venient and can foster stron-ger relationships between students and the parents of those students. Sharing rides also can be fun for kids and motivate them to get out the door so they can see their friends.

Safety should be a priority for carpoolers, and drivers can take the following steps to ensure kids get to school safely.

• Know the laws regarding safety seats as they pertain to age, weight and height.

• Each child will need to ride in a seat that is appropriate and shortcuts should not be taken. If there isn’t room in the vehicle to sit all chil-dren comfortably and in the

proper restraint, then you must reduce the number of passengers in your vehicle.

• Children should ride in the backseat of the vehicle as a priority. Many kids can be safely moved to the front seat around age 13.

• Instruct children to remain in their seats until the car has come to a complete stop. Only then should they remove their seatbelts.

• Make sure students enter and exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of on the street side.

• Instruct passengers to keep their hands and heads inside of the vehicle. If necessary, engage child locks on doors and windows.

• Do not leave a child alone at an empty home in the afternoon. Wait until you see a child go inside his or her home before you drive away.

• Keep the radio low and minimize distractions while driving others.

Carpooling is a great way for parents to share the respon-sibility of getting kids to and from school.

HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of peo-ple, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from class-mates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE” CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joyful Noise was a contemporary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District re-gion and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young people, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate pass-ing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reunit-ing and catching up. The reunion will culminate with a bar-beque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forever impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Satur-day night service who supported each of us during our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

Novena Prayer to St. Anthony of Padua.

O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Mira-cles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for thoses in trouble or anxiety. En-couraged by this thought, I im-plore you to obtain for me (re-quest). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle. Even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of hu-man sympathy, whisper my peti-tion into the ears of the Sweet In-fant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be. Prayer answered. H. B.

DID YOU KNOW? The school buses many Americans are ac-customed to seeing in their neighborhoods trace their origins to educator and author Dr. Frank Cyr, Ph.D. Dr. Cyr specialized in rural education and, in 1939, organized a confer-ence at Teachers College, Columbia Univer-sity in New York City with the intention of standardizing transportation for students on their way to and from school. Representa-tives from several notable corporations, in-cluding engineers from auto manufacturers

Chevrolet, Dodge and Ford and paint experts from DuPont, attended the conference. The fruits of that conference are still paying divi-dends even now, as one of the more notable developments to result from the conference was the decision to paint buses yellow with black lettering to make them easier to see in the early morning and late afternoon. That decision continues to protect the millions of school children who ride the bus to and from school today.

(MS) — Perhaps no aspect of life has gone untouched by technology in the 21st century. Technology has changed the way we com-municate, how we watch television and listen to mu-sic and even how we keep abreast of the latest hap-penings in our communities and abroad.

Technology is also chang-ing the way we drive and, in many ways, making to-day’s highways more safe. While automotive gadgets like built-in WiFi or backup cameras may be the fi rst amenities to grab our atten-tion, new developments in lighting technology are en-hancing driver visibility and making it safer to hit the open road.

Many auto manufacturers still use standard incandes-cent bulbs in their vehicles. But advanced lighting that’s more befi tting of today’s technological standards can make it easier for drivers to see and be seen by fellow motorists. Vision LED Lights from leading automotive lighting manufacturer Phil-ips employ cutting edge LED technology to deliver better and more dynamic

lighting for applications such as brake and taillights, back up lights, side markers, fog lights, and license plate lights. Guaranteed for up to 12 years, Philips Vision LED Lights are highly resistant to extreme heat and vibration, meaning drivers are very likely to replace their vehicle long before they ever need to worry about replacing their LED lights.

The right lighting can vastly improve driver visibility and safety and prove a wise in-vestment for drivers who want to see the road better while making themselves more visible to other motor-ists. In addition to upgrad-ing their vehicles’ lighting, drivers can take the follow-ing steps to ensure they’re seeing the road ahead of them as clearly as possible.

• Get vision checkups. A standard ophthalmic exam is a series of tests conduct-ed to check an individual’s vision and the health of his or her eyes. The National In-stitutes of Health note that the frequency of such tests depends on an individual’s age, but drivers should know that they should get screened more frequently

as they age, and the NIH notes that drivers who wear contact lenses need yearly eye exams. Drivers who sus-pect their vision might be making it harder for them to see when behind the wheel should schedule an oph-thalmic exam immediately.

• Take steps to improve your reaction time and that of your fellow motorists. Per-sonal reaction time also can infl uence how drivers see the road and how quickly they react to potentially negative driving condi-tions. Making sure you get enough sleep and exercise can increase alertness and improve your reaction time. In addition, the choices you make when upgrading your vehicle can improve the re-action time of your fellow drivers. For example, Phil-ips Vision LEDs’ instant-on response make sure brake lights come on the mo-ment you apply the brake, instantly alerting other driv-ers should you be forced to make a sudden stop. That instant response time can reduce braking distance by up to 20 feet, even at speeds as high as 75 miles per hour.

• Prioritize complete ve-hicle maintenance. No ve-hicle maintenance routine is complete unless it includes regular cleaning of head-light lenses, sideview mir-rors and interior glass and mirrors. Dirty mirrors and glass compromises driver vision, so be sure to periodi-cally remove any debris or fi lm buildup on such sur-faces.

TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR LIGHTS

New Philips Vision LEDs (right) employ cutting edge LED technology to deliver brighter, more dynamic lighting than standard incandescent bulbs (left).

September in Malta: The 6th Annual 5k And A Community Business

Alliance For Round LakeAre you a runner (or fast walker!) interested in getting an insider’s view of the two technology parks in the Town of Malta? If so, remember that the Malta Business and Pro-fessional Association will host its’ 6th annual 5K road race on Saturday, September 12, starting at 8:30AM in NYSER-DA’s Saratoga Technology and Energy Park and the Luther Forest Technology Campus. Registration and sponsorship information is available at www.malta5k.com. This event raised well over $30,000 last year to support the Saratoga Rural Preservation Corporation and Malta’s emergency first responders, a tangible, significant benefit of having GLOBALFOUNDRIES and its thousands of employees in our midst. Team building is a popular exercise among area companies, so many sponsors are promoting the race to their employees to build a participating team.  All participants are welcome to meet, network, run, jog or walk, and help benefit the community. The Malta 5k is also part of the Stryders 2015 Grand Prix. Fleet Feet Albany/Adirondack is the office prize sponsor and is providing cash prizes to overall male and female winners.   For updates on the event, visit the event’s Facebook fan page: www.facebook.com/malta5k.  Should you have any questions, call Paul Loo-mis at 518-472-4807 or send an email to [email protected]. As demonstrated by

the hard work put in by Paul and other BPA leaders, local busi-ness groups really do make a difference in our hometowns. Another worthwhile organization of note is the new Round Lake Community Business Alliance, a committee of the Cham-ber of Southern Saratoga County patterned after successful groups in Waterford and Charlton, which will hold its inaugu-ral meeting at Lake Ridge Restaurant at Exit 11 on Tuesday, September 15 at 9:00AM.. If you are either a business owner or resident of Round Lake and would like to attend, please contact me at [email protected]

On December 1, 2012 four 17 year old high school students were returning home from a local college basketball game when their vehicle was blindsided on the highway.

Chris Stewart (our son) and Deanna Rivers were killed immediately. Bailey Wind (Christopher's girl-friend) and Matt Hardy (Deanna's boyfriend) were severely injured, hospitalized and continue in their healing process.

Chris was one of the 2012 captains of the Shenen-dehowa Plainsmen football team with a love for the game and for the school. He finished out his football season but never got to walk across stage to receive his high school diploma. In honor of our son Chris, we are fundraising to renovate the old and dated media box on the football field. We are looking for a way to improve the school facilities and honor the legacy of our son at the same time. We envision the Christopher Stewart Media Box to be an enhancement to the current space, welcoming spectators and visitors to the stadium. The new Media Box will be visually and esthetically attractive to see upon arrival into the stadium. Our beautiful son will always be a part of Shenendehowa and to allow his legacy to hold a place on the campus would be wonderful. Please help us make it a reality. We will be sure to announce the dedication night in hopes you will be there with us and we hope to fill the stadium to kickoff the ribbon cutting for this fantastic new addition to the Shenendehowa CSD campus. Please make your tax deductible donation today. You can also follow us on Facebook at RIP CHRIS STEWART where we post additional information about our fundraising efforts and what we are up to with NYS legislation to toughen the DWI and distracted driving laws. On behalf of our family, thank you for considering our cause and helping us see it thru.
