To reach Mount Sinai, you take a bus. The nearest bus station is two hours

away, and from Cairo, Mount Sinai is about

seven hours away.

You can climb the mountain by foot or ride

a camel.

Camels have a swaying gait that may be uncomfortable for the 3 hour ride up the mountain. By foot, it can take as

little as 45 minutes or up to 3 hours to climb the gentle winding three mile

path to the summit. It takes most people about 2 1/2 hours.

You can hike a shorter route that was literally

carved out of the rock by monks and has 3,750

steps to the top.

You usually start your climb at about 1 a.m. in order to reach

the top in time for sunrise. Most people avoid climbing during the day because of the heat,

although some do climb then, and during winter because night

temperatures can be subzero and there can be snow.

If the sky is clear, the stars are absolutely beautiful, as there are no

major cities for miles and miles (remember the nearest city is two

hours away).

If there are no tourists to distract you, the serenity and solitude of the mountain is deep and abiding, and

one can understand better the closeness of Moses with God.
