WHAT’S OUR NEW POSITION? At the conclusion of the 2001 season, we formally unravelled the relationship between the 25 year old Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club Inc and its newly created entity, the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc, which had been established in 2000. For the first couple of years it was wise to run the two Clubs together for constitutional reasons and to ensure that both clubs could survive financially, independently of each other. Having shown this to be the case, East Coast Eagles (and the Falcons) were then able to operate in their chosen marketplaces with both, generally speaking, having successful seasons. East Coast, with a Premiership in the Reserve Grade of the Sydney AFL and Baulkham Hills, under the Presidency of Richard Stubbs, with 12 of their 13 teams reaching the finals and the Under 15’s claiming the Premiership. It was East Coast’s view, shared strongly with West Coast, that an affiliation with more than just one junior football club in our area was the path that must be taken by the Eagles. The bond with the Falcons however is one which should never be forgotten over time, as East Coast grows in size and direction. With AFL football continuing to prosper at the junior level, more and more clubs are being started up and it was wise for East Coast to build relationships with all the junior clubs in the Northwest zone. It is our charter to promote the Eagles’ brand to all young players for the benefit of both senior clubs in Sydney and in Perth. As a consequence of the amicable separation, this 2002 Annual Report / Year Book for East Coast is the first where we have not had the delight of including extensive summaries and player profiles of more than 15 junior Falcon teams each year. Since the early 80’s, dedicated Kookas, Hawks and Falcons’ people have pledged their time to dutifully record the happenings of each season within the Annual Reports. Over the years, these statistics and words have become very valuable additions to the libraries of thousands of families in the Hills district. Extensive memories will live on thanks to the efforts of so many and arguments will have been solved by reference to the variety of data contained within the pages. We will continue to maintain that high standard from 2002 onwards even though we now have daily access to the Internet and our highly professional Digital Sports developed and managed website at www.eastcoasteagles.com.au Throughout this Year Book you will see references to past winners of awards and trophies. This is a deliberate strategy in order to maintain the history of the Baulkham Hills AFL Football Club along with continuing to acknowledge games played at BHAFC as part of an individual player’s record at East Coast.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2002 was somewhat of a mixed year in that our wonderful on-field success of a Reserve’s Premiership was tinged with the disappointment of finishing on the bottom of the First Grade ladder. And our Under 18’s paid the price of a dreadful start to the season which certainly cost them a place in the finals at year end. When compiling a commentary like this, it is often difficult to decide how or what to report. Some supporters and members regard on-field success as critical to a Club’s survival and future, whilst others expect that the administrators are building bridges behind the scenes, thus ensuring that the Club will be there for many years to come. No one would argue of course that the appropriate approach is a perfectly balanced blend of both. But that’s where it can become tough. Where do you spend the money and time, when there is not that much of either to go around? How do you get that ratio in the right proportion? And your efforts must be flexible to suit the economics of the moment. You will read elsewhere in Bob Wynne’s Financial Controller’s report (page 18) that we consciously reduced our expenditure (compared to 2001) by $36,875. Unfortunately for the third year in succession, we again spent more than we earned, a situation that cannot be permitted to continue. Already we have debenture holders who have loaned the Club funds in order for it to meet on-going commitments. An examination of that report reveals that it will be difficult to further reduce expenditure in any specific area. Any more trimming will mean the Club may as well compete at a level other than the Sydney AFL competition. The General Manager’s position will be evaluated in full with a critical analysis of costs v benefits to be undertaken. If the general consensus is that expenditure has already been reduced to an acceptable level, then our only solution is to increase income accordingly. We have good solid reliable corporate partners (sponsors) who are always there when needed. Assuming of course, that their business can afford such a sponsorship in any particular year. We have countless other businesspeople that are associated with the Club in a variety of ways through sons, nephews etc who have not previously been asked to consider a financial involvement. Whether that involvement is direct to the Club as a sponsor, or indirectly via support of corporate fund raising events is incidental. Just so long as it is there when needed. At the 2003 Annual General Meeting to be held at Bluey’s Brasserie at Roger Sheeran Oval (see page 16) it is my intention to introduce a new initiative in marketing a Sydney AFL Club to the Sydney environment. When the West Coast Eagles are added into the marketing mix, then it can become a very attractive proposition to a prospective corporate partner. Along with the added impetus from a Marketing program, the Club needed to appoint an experienced senior coach. I am fortunate that at the time of preparing this report I am able to comment upon our recently appointed 2003 Coach, Michael Knuppel. When interviewed, we found Mick to be a first class communicator who, after an investigation of the Club’s background, was intrigued with the challenge of taking a Club who finished on the bottom of the ladder, to the level required to continually participate in Final’s football. He understands, as do all others associated with East

Coast, that there is substantially more to this Club than recent on field results indicate. We welcome Michael & Libby Knuppel and their daughter Jasmine to the East Coast Eagles footy club. Recruiting will be stepped up to provide an experienced blend with the youth that keep on coming through from the juniors. We have had that youthful flow for many years now but its impact is yet to be felt. It is way beyond time that the dozen or so ex-juniors who have been in the Club and around First Grade football for three or so years now, step up to the plate and are prepared to be counted. The Club needs to be one which opposition teams hate playing. We are acknowledged for dispensing a great style of football but everyone knows that the Eagles will often simply “lose the plot” when it counts and a defeat will eventuate. I am just one of many who are tired of that, and together we will undertake the reforms needed to ensure that when an opposition team enters the gates of our home ground, they are already mentally well behind the eight ball before the game starts. The Club needs to become a ‘strength’ very quickly and commence creating a dynasty that will last for decades to come. 2002 represented our first year alone in the big wide world of football without a direct alignment with a junior club. Baulkham Hills Falcons continued on unabated in the Northside competition and enjoyed many contests with established junior clubs such as the Bombers, Westbrook and Pennant Hills. It is comforting to all at the Eagles, both East and West, that the standard of football in our area is as good as it is. We look forward to maintaining the relationships with the juniors and in 2003 we will be appointing a full-time liaison officer at East Coast whose sole role will be to maintain and develop interaction between East Coast, West Coast and each junior club. Although the year can be quickly forgotten from a First Grade perspective, (I’m pleased we finished last because no one remembers who finished second last), there are dozens of people who pitched in each week to make the Club function. Each of these people and entities are individually thanked in various reports throughout this Year Book. Our loyal sponsors, both existing and new, remain with us through thick and thin and it is my intention that they, like loyal players and supporters, are rewarded very quickly for their perseverance and patience. Our first ever General Manager Andrew Bence, who has been with us for the last three years, is moving back to Victoria from whence he came in the year 2000. Andrew has been instrumental in helping us set up and indeed cement the relationship with West Coast whilst at the same time coming to grips with the Sydney football scene. His contribution to the growth of the Club has been excellent and he will be missed. As will his good nature and quick witted humour. To our sponsors, proudly listed on page 20, I thank you for your help and encouragement throughout 2002. Some, who prefer to remain highly invisible, are dedicated East Coast people and want the Club to succeed. Once again I assure you all that this success features prominently on the agenda in the near future. And finally, thankyou to my wife Laima whose desire to win is as strong as mine.

WEST COAST EAGLES Throughout my twenty year involvement in the VFL / AFL our great game never ceases to amaze me. It tests us on a day-to-day basis and takes us to the outermost limits of our emotions by presenting us with constant challenges. Who would have thought that the West Coast Eagles would make the finals this year for the first time since 1999, given our performances in 2000 and 2001? Most football pundits were unanimously predicting an even bleaker 2002 for the club, with a wooden spoon as the most likely prize. How quickly things can turn around in the space of twelve months. Hopefully, everyone at the East Coast Eagles Football Club can take heart from this and strive even harder to turn things around on the field, just as quickly. It can be done if you are prepared to put in the effort. You can be rest assured that the hard work being done behind the scenes by your Club’s management team will place the East Coast Eagles Football Club at the forefront of the Sydney AFL in the not too distant future. In 2003, the West Coast Eagles, in conjunction with East Coast, will implement and undertake some exciting and groundbreaking initiatives with the North West clubs from Northside. These initiatives, which have never been undertaken before by an AFL club in greater Sydney, will see the further enhancement of the West Coast and East Coast brand throughout the North West area. I urge all East Coast supporters to embrace these initiatives in 2003. The West Coast Eagles Football Club is genuine and sincere in its support of Aussie Rules in Sydney and in particular the future success of the Sydney AFL competition. We believe that, in order to complement the reported growth in Auskick, the school football programs and the elite player pathway programs, you must have a strong and viable Sydney Football League. This is paramount to the future success of our game in Sydney. I can guarantee that the West Coast Eagles will be doing its bit to ensure this happens for the future benefit of our code in Sydney. Finally, on behalf of the West Coast Eagles I wish to thank everyone involved with the East Coast Eagles for their support and co-operation during 2002. Your willingness to embrace the West Coast / East Coast alliance is very much appreciated. STEPHEN NASH VICTORIAN MANAGER WCE

LIFE MEMBERS 2002 1. Life Membership may be conferred upon any Member who has 10 years

active involvement with either Baulkham Hills Australian Football Club Inc (BHAFC) or East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club Inc. (ECE) and has rendered outstanding service, or has displayed exceptional, unusual, or distinguished merit to the Club.

2. Past service with the BHAFC up to and including the year 2001 will be deemed to be service to ECE for the purposes of ECE Life Membership eligibility.

CRAIG ABERCROMBIE

Already a Player Life Member, Craig is the first person in the Club’s history to be awarded the dual honours. Craig’s contribution to the Club is exceptional. As a player, an umpire, a team manager, in a coaching capacity, as the webmaster of the fantastic East Coast website, as the magical videographer and producer of everything you have ever seen by way of video presentations with this club and the Sydney Football League, a committeeman and all round great guy, he has virtually done everything the Club could ask for. His Player Life Membership was awarded in 1999, which was also the year he decided to retire from actively playing. Since then Craig has wholeheartedly devoted his leisure time (and very often much of his business time) to the East Coast Eagles. We are indebted to the commitment that Craig shows to his beloved Eagles and the future success that will come the Club’s way in due course will be just reward for his outstanding input and involvement. The Club congratulates Craig Abercrombie on becoming our 25th Life Member.

SCOTT ABERCROMBIE

Scott can blame his parents for missing out on being the very first person to achieve the status of dual Life Membership. Ross and Laurel, if you had called your first son, Alan or Barry perhaps, then Scott would have had a name that fell before Craig. Nevertheless the Club congratulates Scott Abercrombie as our 26th Life Member and second dual Life Membership holder. This year Scott has achieved perhaps his biggest honour in football so far by masterminding, coaching and leading his beloved Reserve Grade to their 2002 Premiership. Scott started with the Club as a player in 1984 having decided that it was much better fun than soccer. Since then he has played 327 games, coached at junior & senior level, served on various committees, been actively involved in strategy planning over the years, and always been available for the last 18 years to do whatever has been required to make our club into a successful one.

JOHN EVERNDEN

Our 27th Life member continues to provide outstanding service to the Club even though he doesn’t have any sons still active with football at the moment. Eagles’ members and supporters might know him as “Oscar Overheard” but in reality we really read the wonderfully creative words of John Evernden. John started with the club when son Greg took up footy in 1991 and in that time has always been at the forefront of significant activity, much of which takes place behind the scenes. As a retired engineer with Sydney City Council, John has lent his very talented organisational genes to many a project that needed to be managed. Such as Grand Final extravaganzas when the Falcons were always asked to do the Northside Grand Finals. Eight of them on one day presented no problem to John. He has team managed, he has tirelessly served on the executive committee for many of those years but most of all this man will be remembered for time immemorial when the new ground is finally up and running. I write positively there, because through cooperation with the NSW/ACT Commission and John’s own unbelievably constant belief and thorough work with Council over the last 5 years, we will see a result I’m sure. We will have to have a John Evernden Grandstand I’m sure when it all comes to fruition. Congratulations to you John.

LES JARJOURA

Our final recipient for 2002 has played in a Premiership side with the Baulkham Hills Football Club in 1992 when in SFA mode. Not many people would know that. That he played that is, not that we won a Premiership. He is a man who has placed his future in coaching the up and coming East Coast stars of tomorrow. Les becomes our 28th Life Member. It is worthwhile recounting that Les has coached a side at this club and Baulkham Hills for each and every year since 1993. Coaching Premiership sides is not foreign to him. He has achieved two Premierships and one Runner’s up possie at Sydney AFL U/18 level and one at U/16 level. We now watch as those players mature through to senior football, with many having the Les Jarjoura stamp of authority imprinted on them. Congratulations Les on your Award.

PLAYER LIFE MEMBERS - 2002

1. ECE Player Life Membership will be awarded to any player who provides 10 years of playing service, not necessarily consecutive, from and including games played (minimum of one) in any grade from and including the year 2000 onwards.

2. Past service (in playing years) with the BHAFC up to and including the year 2001 will count as recognisable years of service with East Coast Eagles for the purposes of ECE Player Life Membership eligibility.

Comments in italics are taken from the Annual Report for the player’s first year of football at the Club. DAVID BLEUS …… One of the successes of 1992. A newcomer this year, David grew in confidence as the season progressed and capped off the year with a B.O.G. performance. Certainly has the potential to develop into a fine senior footballer. A great effort. U/9 Hawks 1992. David started late in the season this year and took a while to catch up with the pace of the play. Filled in as a ruckman, just like his big brother and I’m sure he will have a better year in 2003 if he puts in a full pre-season. SAM BROTHERSTON ….. Sam, although small in stature, showed great improvement over the course of the season with his excellent ball sense and marking ability after only his first season of football. Sam will play a major role in next season’s Under 9's. U/9 Kookas 1993. In 2002 Sam played for three matches in the U/18’s filling in when the team was short. He joins his older brother Jay and father Alan amongst the club’s Life Members. Sam participated in a defeated Falcons U/16 grand final side this year but has picked up a Premiership with the David Grace’s U/14’s in 2000 and Les Jarjoura’s U/16’s in 1999. TIM COAKLEY ….. Team leader Tim shows outstanding potential and dominated in attack as the team's top scorer for the season. Tim was rewarded for his efforts by being the recipient of the team's Best and Fairest Award. A great future is assured for him. U/9 Kookas 1993. As in 1993, Tim still shows outstanding potential in our code of football. Tim was an excellent choice as the 18’s captain this year, always leading by example. He had a very consistent year and never failed to encourage the younger brigade in the team. QUENTIN ELLIS ….. A first year player with a greater "love" for the game than anyone else in the team. Still with two years to go in the Under 9's. Quentin's desire is only matched by his fierce determination to succeed - and I have no doubt he will succeed at whatever he chooses. U/9 Hawks 1992 Quentin spent a lot of time on the bench in 2002 with no complaints and enjoyed the limited time he was given. He will be a bigger contributor next year and has no trouble in attending training as it is within walking distance of his home. His father is the one who boundary umpires bare-footed!!!

BRETT JACKSON … A convert from soccer who has proven to be a very elusive player. His strong marking and long kicking will hold him in good stead as he progresses to Under 11's. Brett was also rewarded for his consistent year with the award for Runner Up in the Best and Fairest. U/9 Kookas 1993 Brett had little game time in 2002 but started in 15 matches to bring his total Club games played to 155. Was not recognised for several weeks when he decided to shave off his long flowing hair!! DANIEL MADDEN …. Yet another soccer convert. Daniel started the season lacking the basic skills, however, he soon proved to be the team's strongest defender with both his kicking and handballing improving to such a high level that his award for the Most Improved player was richly deserved. U/9 Kookas 1993 In 2002, Daniel was Runner Up in the Sydney AFL U/18’s Kealey Medal, missing out by just one vote. Always runs himself into the ground and put in an entire pre-season with the senior squad, the value of which clearly paid dividends with his form. At this early stage, he reckons he intends "retiring" and spending more time with his band. JARED MADDEN ….. Jared played most of the year in defence. His strong marking skills often saw him being swung into an attacking role. Showing great potential in only his first season of football, his consistent enthusiasm for his teammates earnt him the Award of Best Team Man. U/9 Kookas 1993 Jared was a Sydney Redback in 2002, but was able to play with the Eagles when the Redbacks had a bye or a forfeit. The youngest of three Maddens, Jared (who is no relation to Daniel by the way) has now played nearly 200 games with the Falcons & the Eagles and now joins his two brothers, Ryan and Liam as a Player Life Member. BEN PHYSICK ….. Ben's skill level was highly evident from the time he first joined the team but a number of injuries prevented him from playing consistent football for the whole season. Ben's physical and mental determination should stand him in good stead for season 1992. U/13 Kookas 1991 Ben went missing there for several years whilst he sought to be drafted via the SANFL and the Glenelg Football Club. However, he returned half way through last year and these two latest seasons have now given him his 10 years of active playing service. We are yet to see anywhere near the best of Ben in the two years he has been back. 2003 will be a ripper. DAVID WALSH …. David is a seven year old first year player with the club who comes from a rugby background. A couple of solid knocks and the loss of a tooth didn't deter David whose understanding of the game increased each week. With a season behind him David can look forward to a good year in 1994. U/9 Hawks 1993 Unfortunately, David has commitments most Sundays which prevent him from playing U/18’s regularly. He is a strong defender and has no fear at tackling much older opponents. David played all year with the U/16 Falcons and has enjoyed a Premiership win with the U/14’s.

COMMENTARY • The amounts shown at 30/09/01 vary from last year’s statement as published in the

2001 Annual Report. Last year, income and expenditure relating to the Falcons was correctly included. For 2002, to enable correct analysis, income of $40,728 and expenses of $38,746 attributable to the Falcons have been removed.

• Sponsorship is lower due to loss of one jumper sponsor from 2001. • Fund raising revenue and costs are lower due to reporting net income rather than

grossing up canteen takings. We now receive a flat payment for the canteen rather than gross takings less running costs.

• Player / Coaching fees reflect changes in coaching staff. • Advertising costs related to signage etc, which did not reoccur in 2002. • Reduction in General Manager’s cost is due to redirection of the Football Manager

subsidy. • General Manager’s cost includes the grossed up value of a motor vehicle supplied.

The Club should move its annual reporting date to 31 December each year to reflect the fact that our terms with players and coaches are for payment by 31 December. Each year we hold the Club Champion night after the financial year end. This night raises significant funds for

payment of players and season expenses. Accordingly, we should be reporting that income against the expenses. The Club continues to trade in deficit. This has occurred for the last three seasons. At 31 December 2002, the Club has liabilities in excess of $30,000 with amounts due to be received of $7,000. This shortfall has arisen from falling revenue generation. We attempted to raise revenue from corporate speaking events, but only one was able to be held. Further, we have not had the resources to organise a golf day. In fact, without loans from two club members, we would be much worse off in terms of paying suppliers and players. For 2003, we need assistance from members for organising fund raising. A separate sub-committee should be established to ensure a golf day and other fund raising events occur. The aim will be for a small team to run each event. Each committee member will probably only be required to organise one event per year. Without it, the club perishes. Members wishing to input or be part of the fund raising committee please contact me on 0411 265241. BOB WYNNE

FACILITIES DEVELOPMENT REPORT

The report in the 2001 Year Book concluded with the statement, ‘the development of a first class, all-weather AFL facility in the Northwest Sector will be actively pursued by the Club’. Although we have not yet obtained land, negotiations have continued consistently throughout the year with Baulkham Hills Shire Council on two sites, which Council had previously nominated. Site 1 – Land currently occupied by Baulkham Hills Motorcycle Club, Kellyville: The proposal to construct a road through this site has been withdrawn and it remains part of Council’s public open space plan. The geometry of the site poses difficulties for the suitable orientation of a playing surface and facilities and the Club is negotiating with Council for a possible expansion of the site to create a more workable parcel of land. Site 2 – The former Waste Transfer Station in Withers Road, Kellyville: This land is suitable for the development of a sporting complex, but the surrounding Cumberland Plain Woodland contains protected flora and fauna and Aboriginal sites, which would impact on construction. The Club is negotiating with Council for the joint development of the site and management of the Woodland. Approaches to the Department of Urban Affairs and Planning for the allocation of land within the Rouse Hill Regional Centre Development (currently the Mungerie Park Golf Course) have been unsuccessful. However, the Club recently held encouraging talks with a local Developer on the possibility of a joint venture within the Northwest Sector. Council officers are currently preparing a report on the needs of all sporting groups in the Shire, to be submitted to Council in November. The Club is hopeful that our on-going talks with Council and the local Developer will soon result in a decision which is favourable to the Eagles. JOHN EVERNDEN

OUR MOST VALUED SPONSORS For sporting clubs to survive in today’s market, sponsorship is a vital form of income. The East Coast Eagles are no exception. The major sponsor of the East Coast Eagles in 2002 was Security & Property Management Services (front of jumper). We thank Vince Thomas for his generous support and look forward to his continued partnership in 2003. Out shorts’ sponsor in 2002 was Bluey’s Brasserie, also owned by Vince Thomas. East Coast is proud to have Bluey’s as its social club as it without doubt provides the best facilities in the competition for both the Eagles and all visiting Clubs. In 2002 we also moved the canteen up to Bluey’s, held a business luncheon, trivia night, karaoke night and all after match functions at our social club. Pasta nights for the players were always a favourite whilst waiting for the weekend teams to be selected and named. To confirm Vince Thomas’ continued support, Bluey’s Brasserie is already impressively placed on the back of our new jumpers in 2003. Corus Hotel Sydney was on the back of the jumper in 2002. Its General Manager Craig Barber will continue to lend assistance to the Eagles in 2003. Stand by for further details. Bill McLeod of Crane Australia once again supported his Club with a more than generous sponsorship. To see the grin on Bill’s face after the Reserve Grade Grand Final says it all. To see his son Luke kick the final goal was a fitting result. We thank Keith Cormican at Custom Fleet for his membership and support. The station wagon that carries the General Manager and football supplies is much appreciated. Once again the Frost family, in Arthur, Jan, Matthew and Rodney, have given their time and money to the Eagles. Lamson Paragon, Paper Rolls and Cheque Mates are a tower of strength. And where would we be without Michael and Cheryl Pilkington at Taxi Clothing. Michael’s generosity to the Under 18’s and senior Club is fantastic. We wish to thank Craig and Scott Abercrombie at Digital Sports for again donating their time, money and energy to the club they love. Whether it be the website, game day videoing, jumper presentation night or Club Champion night, Digital Sports are there. Finally, let me thank all sponsors large or small. It does not matter how you contribute, we need your support and appreciate everything you do. Andrew Bence

Some famous names are listed above. Some of those people still maintain the connection with the Eagles and some cannot for various reasons. This award is specifically targeted at people who do more than is expected each and every week through the real footy season and the so called “off season”. The President’s award is where I get the chance to acknowledge one person who has done so much to keep the Club in shape and up and running. Sure, success didn’t come at First Grade level which is of course what counts. You cannot finish bottom of the ladder and wake up on a Monday morning feeling satisfied with your efforts, as an administrator or as a player. But I always knew that there was someone who I could call upon to talk through the day’s events and work out where we had gone wrong. What could we do to rectify the errors or the weaknesses that were there? That man was always there when needed. I refer of course to West Coast’s Victorian Manager Stephen Nash. Over the three years West Coast has been involved with us, their support has never wavered. They were thrilled when the U/18’s won the 2000 Flag in the first year of our alliance. They are thrilled that the Reserves won this year’s Premiership. It is fair to say they aren’t too thrilled that we finished last in the top grade but they are still thrilled and always will be, with the progress we are making with the kids in the area and the culture and purpose of our Club. “Just keep going and keep the Club together and build a little each and every year, and success will come”, says Stephen Nash. Nashy has had an almighty part to play in that. Stephen takes a terrific interest in what happens up here, because West Coast knows exactly that there is fertile ground in Sydney for our code of footy. Naturally they want to create a commercial market for their brand and we are helping with that, but it is for the betterment of the code nationally that their involvement continues. Stephen Nash is a passionate man about his footy. It used to be just West Coast Eagles but now it is as though he has had another son and he looks after our interests with just as much passion. I am truly delighted he is part of our Club and congratulate him on being this year’s 2002 President’s Award recipient. PETER PHYSICK

This award is decided upon by our General Manager, Andrew Bence. This year, Andrew was unable to split two people. And so we have joint award winners. The first is Scott Abercrombie. Scott has played 327 games for the two clubs across all junior and senior grades. He has been a leading identity for many years in the Club and this year in particular if the Club needed some players for junior clinics that he or the AFL were running, then Scott was always amongst the first to put up his hand. He is the first to training to set up what is needed, to turn on the lights and to make sure all is ready. He is always the last to leave, to lock up and sweep up as the case may be. He attends committee meetings regularly as the players’ representative and to provide input into the Club’s direction. He’s a special bloke who deserves the Premiership success he got this year. Congratulations Scott. Our second and joint recipient, Janice Frost, can be described as “I don’t think I’ve ever met a better Club person”. Jan is always there on match day from 9.30am before the start of the U/18’s and supports every player and every team right through to sundown. Home or away, it doesn’t matter. She attends every after match function and every corporate event we hold. She sings with Rodney on Karaoke nights, she cries when Rodney asks her to sing on Karaoke nights, she is the first to buy raffle tickets. “They don’t make enough Jan Frosts.” Every club deserves someone like Jan. She is proud to wear her Eagles clothing and I’m sure must wear it when she makes those dozens of salad rolls each & every week for the players. Congratulations Jan on your truly deserved award. GOALKICKING AWARDS

East Coast Eagles PREVIOUS WINNERS (Including BHAFC recipients) (Goals kicked in brackets) 1990 Steven Brown (59) 1996 Ben Physick & Daniel Graham (45) 1991 Peter Sheehan (91) 1997 Ryan Madden (105) 1992 Glen Johnston (117) 1998 Ryan Madden (27) 1993 Jason Crawford (45) 1999 Michael Scicchitano (33) 1994 Greg Lake (41) 2000 Jason Crawford (25) 1995 Jason Westerbrink (63) 2001 Gus Seebeck (47)

The Leading Goalkicker in the Club was for many years awarded to the player who kicked the most across all grades of footy, no matter where they played. A couple of years ago we changed that to recognise First Grade senior goals only. In a year in which the goal kicking duties were shared around a fair bit, the end result saw our leading goal kicker for 2002 as Travis Hall with 32. Travis hovered around the half forward line on most occasions and was often seen with the football in hand shooting at the goal umpire. In fact, in what was a relatively low overall total in the competition for 2002, Travis fished seventh on the aggregate League table. Tim Bylsma finished twelfth with 29 and Ben Physick was eighteenth with 23 goals. At the time of altering our decision in relation to the leading Goalkicker being a First Grade player, the Board also acknowledged that should a player in a lower grade lead their competition’s total then that achievement would also be recognised. And that has occurred this year with Scott Abercrombie taking out the Sydney AFL Reserve Grade goal kicking honours with 54 goals. This honour, on top of his Life Membership, Eagles’ Clubman of the Year award and successful Premiership coach, suggests that 2002 may well go down in Scott’s career as his best ever season. Andre Sliwka finished third on the Reserve Grade tally board with 37 goals. Ben Rogers finished on top in the 18’s for East Coast and third in the League tables. FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR This award has always automatically gone to the winner of the Best & Fairest trophy in First Grade. The Club Executive chose to introduce revised assessment criteria from 1999 onwards, thus allowing any East Coast player to win. This trophy will now be awarded to that player who displays exemplary form both on and off the field in relation to overall Club contribution. PREVIOUS WINNERS 1990 Mick Toy 1996 Shaun Edmunds 1991 David Reed 1997 Rodney Frost 1992 Doug Scholz 1998 Jarrod Crosby 1993 Greg Lake 1999 Jarrod Crosby 1994 Graham Jones 2000 Jarrod Crosby 1995 Graham Jones 2001 Gus Seebeck

This year’s East Coast Footballer of the Year is Daniel Bylsma. If you think that Scott Abercrombie’s year has been a big one then just dwell for a moment on what “Bertie” has achieved. Firstly he started the year off in November 2001, by choosing to return to the Club which he really called home. A year spent at North Shore didn’t quite work out as he may have wanted and he decided to ask the Eagles if he could return. Naturally our answer was in the affirmative. “Not only will I come back,” said Bertie “but can I bring a few players with me”, he said. So along came a tribe of ‘em and haven’t these guys been great for the club on and off the field. And I know that they immensely enjoyed being with us as well. Daniel then went on to enjoy a season you can only dream about. He won the Sanders Medal as the Best & Fairest player in the Sydney AFL Reserves’ competition, he played in a Premiership side, he won his own Club’s B&F, the Bill McLeod Trophy, and now he has been acknowledged as the Footballer of the Year for his Club. Rudi, Tim and Daniel have been great contributors to the Club since their move from Parramatta in 1995 and this recognition is just reward for a family who love their footy. Congratulations Daniel Bylsma. The respective “Best and Fairest” in each East Coast Eagles team are: Club Champion Winner Clint Austerberry Runner Up Gus Seebeck Bill McLeod Trophy Winner Daniel Bylsma Runner Up Matthew Williams Under 18’s Winner Daniel Murrell Runner Up Tim Coakley

GENERAL MANAGER

Andrew Bence Season 2002 began with the announcement that Tim Jones would leave the East Coast Eagles and take on the coaching role with UNSW / East Sydney. His assistant and close friend Glenn Tanner would join Tim at the Bulldogs. East Coast searched high and low for its new coach and would finally appoint Gus Seebeck and Andrew Baxter to the position of joint Senior Coaches. Both men did a great job under the circumstances. Scott Abercrombie was given the Reserves job with David Beauchamp moving to Macquarie University Football Club. Trevor Hangan took control of the Under 18 Eagles. Vince Thomas of Security & Property Management Services would again be Major Sponsor. This report, as in previous years, is my vehicle to thank those who gave their time and energy to ensure this football club could operate on a day-to-day basis. Let me start with Peter Physick. Not only did he maintain the role of President, his deeds on match day and throughout the year were priceless. Richard Lee as Secretary and Bob Wynne as the Financial Controller were a great back up to Peter and John Evernden was tireless in his role as Facilities Development Manager. The Team managers Ross Abercrombie (seniors) and Alan Brotherston (Under 18’s) are two of the best blokes a club could want. No fuss and bother, they just get the job done and put up with me. We are extremely lucky to have timekeepers who actually enjoyed the role. Thomas Duss, Laima Physick and Frank Ure get the Rolex Award for 2002. Our medical team of Ellen Hawes, Rudi Bylsma, Ryan Madden and Chris Turnbull did a magnificent job. Hopefully all are onboard in 2003. And how lucky we are to have the expertise of Craig Abercrombie at Digital Sports. For example, the www.eastcoasteagles.com.au website, game day video, Jumper Presentation Night and Club Champion Night are all produced by Digital Sports. Craig received his Life Membership this year, as did John Evernden, Scott Abercrombie and Les Jarjoura for their work over many years. Two extremely important milestones were reached in 2002. Jason Crawford and his brother Steve Merkel played their 300th game for the Club. It was a disappointing end to the home and away season with First Grade finishing last. However the Reserve Grade Premiership victory was a terrific thrill for all. The U/18’s finished the season in great style and were unlucky not to have snatched a finals’ berth.

Well done to UNSW / ES on its First Grade Premiership and to the Sydney Redbacks Development Squad for its U/18 win. I fully expect all three East Coast teams to play a part in the 2003 Sydney AFL Final Series. My final ‘thank you’ goes to Stephen Nash and Trevor Nisbett of the West Coast Eagles. Stephen’s encouragement and support to me with his tireless work for the East Coast Eagles over the past three years will pay dividends in the years to come. And finally, a sincere thanks to all sponsors, members, committee and players of the East Coast Eagles AFL Football Club, for their support and friendship over the past three years.

Although the U/18’s did not make the finals for the first ever time, there were many pleasing aspects in terms of player development including:-

• Twenty eight of the thirty nine players used in 2002 are still eligible for next

season. • Daniel Madden falling just one vote short of winning the League’s Kealey

medal.

• Ben Rogers, the smallest and youngest player in the team, finished as the third highest goal scorer in the competition and gained 12 votes in the Sydney AFL U/18 medal count.

• Simon Marshall, in his first senior year after coming from the Baulkham Hills

Falcons, made his First Grade senior debut including playing at the SCG against the Redbacks.

• New player Adam Lovett, who transferred from soccer, was a major coup for

the year. He had a fantastic season showing excellent promise to take out the most improved player award for the team.

• A link with the Norwest Jets was formed which gave players the opportunity

to gain much needed match time when they were missing out at the Eagles. It is hoped that this relationship will grow stronger in 2003 and also prove to be another breeding ground for players to come under the Eagles’ banner.

• Seven U/16 Falcons, Tristan Callaway, Ryan Hogg, Liam Patira, Brett

Rizzo, Tim Tibbens, David Walsh and Chris Wynne all made their senior U/18 debut in 2002.

• Trevor Hangan took over the major coaching task prior to the season

commencing, due to Les Jarjoura who had been the coach in the previous two years, taking up a new business venture. This was simply a reversal of roles as Trevor had previously served as the assistant coach.

The Eagles got off to a very bad start with four losses on the trot, two of which were very marginal and winnable and this would prove to be very costly in terms of final’s

participation at the business end of the season. There then followed a stretch of wins with eight out of ten matches being won by the Eagles before the Sydney U/16s and North Shore ran over us in the last two games. We ended up fifth on the ladder, missing finals involvement by two games and also managed to beat every team, except North Shore, at least once during the season. Captain Tim Coakley had a tremendous season leading by example from the back line and marshalling his troops to some stirring victories mid season. Tim and Mark Griggs were the only players to take the oval in every U/18 match in 2002. Vice captain Simon Marshall started the season strongly before being promoted to the seniors and incurring a leg injury. Thankfully, he returned to the fold and played further matches in the seniors. He has already been committed to pre-season training with the NSW/ACT Rams squad, so all wish him every success in whatever team he participates next season. Both “Daniels” had exceptional years. Murrell dominating all opponents with many marks and runs down the oval to push the Eagles to advantage in the forward 50 and Madden once he committed himself to the U/18’s, ran himself into the ground and was always the most exhausted at the end of the match. Shannon Hinkley consistently showed he has the biggest heart and to think that he was very nearly lost to rugby for the year. Shannon goes where others fear to tread putting his body on the line week in and week out. Thank goodness he stayed with the Eagles and hopefully he will now join all the other players who now move up due to their age. A player who will have no trouble fitting into the higher ranks is Steven Roberts who had a strong year and featured in the best players being the main target up forward due to his strength in the air and strong attack of the ball. The team was also fortunate to have their Redback players made available when their "normal" team had forfeits or in time of need and thanks go to Ben Allen, Jared Madden, Nathan Peters and Derek Redman. A player who shows lots of potential but found it hard to get on the training track or to games for various reasons was Jeremy Keane. It is hoped that he continues to participate with the seconds next season. Jacub Zverina joined from the Norwest Jets but after a couple of matches he returned, but still regularly hit the training track with the Eagles. Nathan Veerhuis and Jonathan Stott also joined the Norwest Jets mid-season as they were having limited game time and enjoyed the experience, featuring strongly in their best players each week. Brett Jackson also took up a mid season chance to play additional football at the Norwest Jets but decided to return to the Eagles for a chance of participating in a Finals’ team. Stephen Davidson was one of the midfield dynamos who, unfortunately, had a season ending injury just prior to the last game. He continued to train throughout the finals series with the Falcons U/16’s even after the Eagles’ season ended which augers well for next season. Andrew Slimmon, who transferred from Pennant Hills, showed plenty of enthusiasm both on and off the park. Brad Ure and Craig Stokes decided to concentrate on U/18’s football even though still eligible for U/16’s. Craig unfortunately suffered a major knee injury mid-season but came back strongly and will be a major force in 2003. Brad also had basketball priorities during the season but his breaking through the packs to create forward opportunities was the feature of his game.

After a slow start to the season Chris Cottee established himself as a stalwart in the strong back line and was rewarded with the Best Team Man award in 2002 for his efforts. Will Chris still want the number 14 jumper with the retirement of Paul Kelly or will it be given over to Brad Ure who has stated his intentions for that number in 2003? This will be a strong talking point pre season. Stay tuned for the result. After a season in the Reserves Luke Thomson was another who capably led the back line and will play a strong part in 2003. David Bleus made a mid season return to football and if he was to apply himself to the necessary pre season work he could make a bigger impact as a strong marking forward. Luke Austin, another of the small brigade, finished the season strongly and along with Ashley Loxton and Quentin Ellis will grow stronger after their initial season in the seniors. After making their senior debuts prior to 2002, Sam Brotherston and James Fitzpatrick were given further opportunities. The off field support from parents and friend's was much appreciated and some need special mention for their contributions. Mike Pilkington again put his hand up as the major team sponsor and the players really look forward to those match day best player awards. Bruce Stokes continued his Runner tasks and looked great in his new fluorescent green outfit until it was borrowed by the Reserves. Ian Rogers completed the statistics which the coaches used to highlight game strengths and weaknesses and Peter Madden who filled in and provided fruit when he could. Goal umpiring duties were shared around but mostly taken up by Ian McKinley, Geoff Cottee, Kevin Hinkley or Phil Austin. It is a pity there were not a few more the Eagles’ way especially in those close ones when a defeat could have easily turned into a win!! The players were also refreshed by the water carriers in Bob Jackson, Lindsay and Sean Mayo and the U/16’s who were always on hand to do the scoreboard, time keeping or other game day duties. The barefoot boundary umpiring duties, provided by the ever reliable Ron Ellis, were completed with little complaint despite the harsh treatment of one particular umpire who insisted on dismissing him just prior to the game commencing. Derek Hogg was the unofficial match day team photographer and arranged both team and individual photographs at the end of the season. Alan Moeller from the U/16 Falcons was a great addition to the junior ranks and the joint Thursday training sessions at Charles McLaughlin assisted in the player development of both teams. He never had any issues with any of the players being promoted to the seniors.

Last of all to Andrew Bence and Peter Physick who continue to excel in the off field management and deserve better from all the teams who take the oval in Eagles colours each week. One special initiative that was introduced in 2002 was the catering services provided by Vince Thomas. Those early morning “value for money breakfasts” were fantastic and the balcony provided the ideal forum for the after match analysis of the team’s performance. Keep up the good work Vince. There is much to look forward to in 2003. TREVOR HANGAN & ALAN BROTHERSTON

A win is a win is a win, and to win the 2002 Reserve Grade premiership was one of the most enjoyable and satisfying wins of my career. The fact that it was my first year as a senior coach had something to do with this but it was not the main reason. The fact that it was the Club’s first open-age Premiership at Sydney AFL level, after a number of U/18 Premierships, had something to do with it, but it was not the main reason. The fact that it showed that the systems and training methods which the coaching staff had employed could be successful had something to do with it, but it was not the main reason. There were a number of pleasing things to come out of this Premiership that all contributed to our success, but the main reason that this Premiership was so enjoyable and satisfying to me, was that it was achieved not just by the players that played in the Grand Final team but by the whole Club. From the supporters that turned up to watch every week to the coaches and officials involved in the running of the team. This Premiership is a testament to what persistence, hard work and discipline can achieve. During pre-season we were fortunate enough to recruit a number of players that, when added to the players that we already had and the younger players that were coming out of the U/18’s, would improve the Club’s depth and strengthen the Reserve Grade side. This would mean that, throughout both First and Reserve Grades, there would be a lot more pressure on for positions. As a result of this we saw some of the best numbers on the track for a pre-season and a greater level of enthusiasm towards training than we have seen in a long time. This was the start of a feeling that permeated itself within the Reserve Grade squad and was a major factor behind the success of the team. By the time Round 1 came around, it was obvious to me that we had a very even playing list and although this would ultimately mean that First Grade probably lacked a couple of match winning players, it meant that the Reserve Grade side should be very strong. The mix of enthusiasm and experience within this squad was ideal for the style of game we wanted to play. The evenness of the entire playing list along with the inevitable injuries meant that a lot of players were able to gain First Grade experience throughout the year. This would become vital during the Final’s series. It was always our goal as a coaching staff to pick the best possible team for First Grade and then the best possible team for the Reserves, all the while rewarding players for good form and hard work both on the field and on the training track. As a result of this when it came to the Finals, of the thirty three players who had qualified for selection (including those that were injured) twenty three had made at least one

First Grade appearance during the season. Of the actual twenty players who were selected to play the Grand Final, eighteen had played First Grade during the season. From a coaching point of view it was a pleasure to coach this team from the beginning as all the players did everything possible to work within the systems that we had devised. Although we never got ahead of ourselves I think they also realised what could be achieved if we were willing to play as a team and adopt the philosophy of PRIDE, PASSION, DISCIPLINE and RESPECT for each other and the Club. Season 2002 was a very successful one for the Reserve Grade squad. Along the way we had the best defensive record in the comp, we had the best attacking record in the comp and we also took out the two individual awards presented by the League for the home and away rounds. Congratulations to Daniel Bylsma (Bertie) on winning the Sanders Medal for the Best and Fairest in Reserve Grade. This was a very popular victory within the Club as Bertie had returned after a season at North Shore. He is the classic example of how well a player can play when he enjoys the Club he is at and he has fun playing the game. Congratulations must also go to all the Reserve Grade players who allowed me to have enough shots at goal in order to win the goal kicking award for the Reserve Grade Competition. But I think Bertie would agree with me that we would both have traded these honours to be part of a Premiership side. Thankfully, due to the hard work of everyone involved with the Reserve Grade team (in other words everyone involved with the Club) we don’t have to trade them in and we got to enjoy the pleasure of winning a Premiership as well. To see the looks on the faces of the players, but more importantly, the supporters was worth more than any individual award could be worth. Having said that, individual awards are always nice to receive and I would like to congratulate our individual award winners. All the winners had very good seasons and formed a big part of the teams overall success. These winners were: Best and Fairest: Daniel Bylsma Daniel had a very consistent year which saw him not only win this award but also the League Best and Fairest. Bertie was a driving force from the mid-field and his talk and enthusiasm were invaluable. Bertie was also a big help in helping to get the best out of our younger players continually encouraging them and giving them advice. Runner up Best and Fairest: Matthew Williams Matthew achieves this award in his first year of competitive football and took to it like a duck to water. The turning point for “Zoo” probably came during pre-season when our GM told him that if he came to more training sessions he could be a good footballer. He hardly missed a session after that and was always eager to learn. Being tall and athletic allowed him to be used all over the ground and with some work on his kicking, Matthew can be a regular First Grade contributor Coaches Award: Luke McLeod Luke isn’t the most athletic player, he isn’t the fittest player, he isn’t even the most skilful player but he is the first player picked every week. “Nutsy” gives his heart and soul for the blokes he runs out on the field with. He is a coach’s dream because you know that wherever you put him or what ever job you give him, he will apply himself to the task 110%. He is also a role model at training and he came up with one of the quotes of the year, “Bencey you’re not going to believe it but it seems that the harder and more often I train, the better I get”. I think there is something in that for all of us.

Most Consistent: Craig Magnuson A lot of people may not have noticed Craig throughout the season but I can assure you that his mates in the back line did. “Mago” consistently beat his man and then began many an attacking raid from either the Half Back Flank or the Back Pocket. Very rarely did you see his man get a kick and if he did, you can bet he earned it. “Mago” also had the job of cleaning up a lot of the ball that was on the ground in our back line and he did this with no fuss. Week in and week out you could rely on him to do a job for you. Although these guys won the awards, in order for a team to be successful it must be a team and function as a team. This is what we were able to achieve throughout the season. This team included the First Grade players that were coming back from injury and the U/18’s who came up to help out when we were short through the middle of the season due to these injuries. To these players I would like to extend a ‘thank you’ from all the Reserve Grade players. The smooth movement of these players through the grades was made possible because of the adoption of a singular game plan throughout the club. The credit for this must go to Senior Co-Coaches Andrew Baxter and Gus Seebeck. I would also like to thank them for their help and advice throughout the season but also during the Finals series. Thanks as well go to Ellen Hawes, Rudy Bylsma and Chris Turnbull for their work in getting the players on the ground each week, a big job when you consider some of the players we had playing in the side this year. I don’t think I’ve ever seen more tape used in one team. A big ‘thank you’ to Andrew Bence for his work as team manager during the year and to his assistant during the Finals, Ross Abercrombie. To Trevor Hangan, thanks for your assistance with players when we were short and your advice when I needed it. I would also like to thank the Norwest Jets for providing somewhere for our players to play when we had too many for the two teams early in the season. This is a problem that we haven’t had in the past but the benefits of being able to get these guys a game can be seen in the improvement of Jeremy Pell late in the season. To Mark Horan, Craig Abercrombie and Phil Bester, my off field team, I need to give a big ‘thank’ you as without them it would have been impossible for me to be a playing coach. The job they did during the games allowed me to have the confidence to know that all I had to worry about from the start of the quarter to the end of it was whether or not I was getting a kick. Also to Vice-Captain Ryan Madden and Deputy Vice Luke McLeod thanks for your on-field assistance. I would also like to thank Stephen Nash for convincing me that I could do the coaching job and still be competitive as a player. I thank the Club for giving me the opportunity to take the next step in my football career and to be involved with such a great group of people. And finally thank you to the Mums, Dads, Wives, Girlfriends, Brothers, Sisters and everyone else involved with the running of the East Coast Eagles Football Club for giving us the inspiration to go out each week and give our all for the best Club in Sydney. If I could leave you with this to think about over the off-season, a major league baseballer and manager who had won seven World Series rings was asked which one was his favourite. His answer was that the next one was always his favourite. SCOTT ABERCROMBIE

The year was one of frustration. Following two solid victories in the first five rounds, including the nail biting, come-from-behind win against the eventual Premiers UNSW/ES in Round 5, the season never took off. Several narrow losses in the first nine rounds and others later in the year, eventually wore away at the youthful exuberance that flowed through the pre-season. It was a matter of so close yet so far. The young side either beat or ran within 14 points of four of the top five sides in the competition. Yet despite retaining the Warren “Pops” Quintrell shield on two occasions, the year produced few highlights. In times like these we must look to the future with optimism but never lose sight of the reality that hit home after round 18. We firmly believe that the Club has a solid foundation on which to build. Few clubs matched the professionalism shown by the ECE both on and off the field. This year the players were exposed to the importance of correct pre-match preparation from attire, to diet and attitude. We learnt the importance of respect for those around us who volunteer their time to ensure the Club operates as efficiently as it does. From within the extensive junior affiliates, the club has bought together a fine core of young men who will hopefully mature into reliable first grade players. Our mid-field and on-ball division averaged around 19 years of age. Clint Austerberry and Ryan Fitton worked hard all year, often pitted against opponents 10 years their senior with vast playing experience. From this group also emerged a couple of future stars. Blake Ure at full back was given one of the toughest jobs each week. He handled the challenge showing maturity beyond his years. His attitude toward training and match day preparation will hold him in good stead and he has a bright future ahead of him. Simon Marshall also made a positive First Grade debut at age 16, and has the potential to achieve big things. Newcomers to the East Coast Eagles in 2002 also played solid consistent football and will further enhance the team in the future. 'Old Man Eagle' Gavin Walsh brought a wealth of experience to the side, and with a full pre-season under his belt is sure to emerge as one of the competition’s best in 2003. Wagga recruit Andy Dubojski started the year in the Reserves but soon cemented his place in the First Grade side by holding down a key back line role. West Aussie Rodney Pash attacked the footy with little regard for his own safety.

Ever reliable Tim Bylsma presented option after option across half-forward, Steven Bilkey improved as the season progressed across half-forward and on the ball. A fitter and stronger Matty Arbon proved he could match it with the competition’s most talented forwards and Ben Physick gave his all week in week out. Having said this, it is clear that the First Grade side fell short in a number of areas in 2002. Hopefully this can act as the catalyst the Club needs in order to improve in these areas and become a force in Sydney Football. We would like to congratulate Scott Abercrombie and the Reserves side on a fantastic year. Winning a Premiership is a difficult task in any competition which requires sacrifice, dedication and above all a winning attitude. Throughout the year, the Reserves played solid, accountable football. They trained hard, worked for each other and now share a bond that will unite their friendship for life. We would very much like to thank the following people for their help and support throughout the year; One-job General Manager Andrew Bence; fitness guru Mark Richardson; physiotherapist extraordinaire Ellen Hawes; the trainer in denim Rudy Bylsma; team manager with the mostest “Rosco” Abercrombie; tech wiz Craig Abercrombie and the Queen of salad rolls Janice Frost. Special thanks must also go to the “Prez” Pete Physick whose unwavering support filled us with confidence all year long. And finally to the club's major sponsor, Vince Thomas and his crew at Bluey's for putting up with us night after night! We would sincerely like to thank the East Coast Eagles Football Club for giving us the opportunity to coach the First Grade side. We have both learned an enormous amount and wish the club the very best of success in 2003 and beyond.
