Born out of the post-nuclear rubble of Japan, kaiju — or 'strange creatures' — rampaged across the silver screen, stomping on anything they came across and, in the process, capturing the imagination of a generation. Artists who were weened on the likes of Godzilla, Rodan, and Ghidorah have gleefully revisited their love of the monstrous, creating a new wave of massive imaginary beasts in the form of toys.

When the Clutter Gallery opted to display an exhibition of these neo-kaiju creations, we called upon Paul Bas of Monster Island (NYC) to curate. As someone that had been diligently working behind-the-scenes within the kaiju community for years, Bas put his expert eye for these vinyl beasts to the test, challenging himself to select the brightest and best from the expansive field.

Captured herein are detailed photographs of all the pieces present at the exhibition, a diverse collection that embraces all possible interpretations of what kaiju is. And, for even the most hardcore fan, a distinct highlight was not only a micro edition of NagNagNag's Boryoku Genjin figure but the presence of its creator, Shigeru Arai, at the opening.
