CM20 Meeting April 9, 2013 D.R. Dietderich, LBNL2
Outline
• Status of QXF R&D– Target Thicknesses
• 0.125 mm or 0.150 mm per side
• HQ/LHQ insulation R&D experience– HQ/LHQ Target thickness
• 0.100 mm per side
CM20 Meeting April 9, 2013 D.R. Dietderich, LBNL3
NEW QXF Insulation R&D
• New England Wire (NEW)• Target thickness 0.150 mm
per side• AGY S2-glass fibers (66
tex) with 933 silane sizing• 2 ply fibers twisted with a
pitch length of 3”. • 48 carriers• Braided has 15.4 P/I
CM20 Meeting April 9, 2013 D.R. Dietderich, LBNL4
Braid Thickness
• Reference pressure is 1,000 ksi
• ~18.2 P/I to obtain 0.150 mm
• ~12.4 P/I to obtain 0.125 mm

Summary and Plans
• Have 0.130 mm thickness • 2 ply braid may produce insulation with target
thickness of 0. 125 mm and 0.150 mm with either 12.4 P/I (picks per inch) or 18.3 P/I, respectively
• Do not plan to make any new R&D runs for 2 to 3 months
• Going to focus on QXF cable R&D
