    John Faranda 79 Moves to Newly

    Expanded Role for the College

    John Faranda 79, who has served the College for aremarkable 30 years, most recently as Vice President forAlumni and Parent Relations, has moved to a key positionas Vice President and Ambassador-at-Large for theCollege. He will focus on strengthening and sustainingpersonal and community relationships with special alumniand friends, domestically and internationally. Evan Rutter06 now assumes overall responsibility for the leadershipof the Office of Alumni and Parent Relations, having donean outstanding job during the past two years as director ofthe office.Read more

    With the recent SCOTUS rulings, CMC faculty andfellows have been in the forefront including Prof. AudreyBilger on marriage equality in Ms. Magazine and KCRWand Rose Institute Fellow Douglas Johnson '92 in theChristian Science Monitor on redistricting.

    The 2014-15 school year was a great one for the college.Highlights include a record number of admissionapplications, the completion of Mid-Quad renovationsand a winning year for many CMS athletics teams-- justto name a few. See the video

    Complexity and Identity

    How do you grasp a countrys identity? Answering thatquestion is complicated, especially when it involves alayered, culturally complex nation like India. Two newscholarly studies on aspects of this question have recentlybeen published by Aseema Sinha, who is CMC's WagenerFamily Associate Professor of Comparative Politics andGeorge R.     In June, actors gave a special performance of the poetryof Professor Emeritus Ricardo Quinones, who for manyyears has been one of the Colleges leading literarycritics and scholars. The poetry reading took place inSanta Monica at the famed Beyond Baroque bookstore,which has served as the launching pad for the careers ofmany renowned contemporary poets.Read more

    Amelia Evrigenis 15 and Prof. Daniel Krauss co-authored

    Juvenile sentencing: Does the punishment fit the crime?

    that was featured in the Monitor, the AmericanPsychological Association's newsletter that reaches more

    than 130,000 of their members. Amelia is the first author

    and the article is largely based on her senior thesis on

    juvenile sentencing.

    In Case You Missed It: Commencement

    2015

    Critically acclaimed author Azar Nafisi delivered the

    keynote address at Claremont McKenna Colleges 68th

    Annual Commencement ceremonies on May 16. She

    urged graduates to use their liberal arts education to

    disrupt or disturb the peace and avoid complacency.

    'Behind the Key with John Roth

    John Roth, in the special feature Behind The Key. In

    this interview, he describes his passion for human rights

    and justice, and the special inspiration he received

    teaching in the Claremont Colleges for some 40 years.

    New Videos Showcase CMC History and

    Talent

    Among the new videos on CMCs YouTube channel,

    President Emeritus Jack Stark 57 GP11 and Jil Stark 58

    GP11 discuss CMCs history from its birth after WWII,

    the colleges growth amid the turmoil of the 1960s,

    coeducation and further development in the 1970s and the

    rapid growth of the college in subsequent years. Also, see

    highlights from CMCs Got Talent, a student talent show

    held in April on campus.

    Bill Walkenbach Selected as Head Coach

    of CMS Baseball

    Bill Walkenbach has been selected as the next head

    coach for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' baseball

    program, as announced on July 1 by CMS Director of

    Athletics Michael Sutton, who is the William B. Arce

    Professor and George R. Roberts Fellow. Walkenbach

    will be the seventh coach in the 58-year history of the

    Stag baseball program. He joins CMS after having

    served seven years as the head baseball coach at NCAA

    Division I Cornell University.

  • Passings: Former Trustee Larry Hammett

    57

    The campus community mourned the loss of Larry

    Hammett 57, a former trustee and active alumnus from

    CMCs early classes. Hammett passed away in June in

    Santa Barbara.

    Swimming With the Sharks at the Angel

    Summit

    Five ventures led by CMCers vied for investment,

    networked and received valuable feedback at the

    inaugural Angel Summit held in May. Following the

    premise of ABCs Shark Tank, entrepreneurs

    presented their ventures and panelists asked questions

    and offered feedback. The event was presented by the

    Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and

    CMCAA.
