From an idea to a product

The vision of Christian Michelsen Research AS (CMR) is to conduct research for industrial development. CMR is a technology research company that focuses on commercial research and development. The purpose of the company is to be beneficial to society, and it undertakes commissions from private and public enterprises. The company creates value for Norwegian and international clients, as well as for society through its ability to translate ideas and research results into commercial products and industrial solutions.

Fields oF operationWith 180 employees, CMR is organised as a group, with three business units – CMR Instrumentation, CMR Computing and CMR Energy – and two subsidiaries – GexCon AS and Prototech AS. We offer our clients analyses of complex issues, as well as solutions, through prototypes and demonstrators. Our guiding principle, “From an idea to a product”, places us in the intersection between research and industry. Most of CMR’s contract work is in the sectors of oil and gas, renewable energy, energy technology, space, fisheries, the environment and security, and preparedness. The group is active globally, but most of its revenues come from the sales of products and services in Norway and Europe.

CMR’s staff consists of highly skilled, cutting-edge researchers. Exciting tasks and workplace satisfaction make CMR an attractive place to work. Each individual plays a key role in the contribution to success. Working with advanced technological solutions and examin-ing the dilemmas of natural science – always from the researcher’s viewpoint – enable us to identify future trends, take ownership of visions and pave new roads for us all to walk.

past history and Future goalsThe roots of CMR’s technological expertise can be traced back to 1930, as part of the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI). CMI was established to provide free and independent research, as a result of a bequest from former prime minister and ship-owner Christian Michelsen.

At present we need to expand our expertise within our core areas of activity. The company’s goal is to grow, to achieve a greater scope and build a more solid foundation for our activities. Such development must be based on closer ties to other R&D teams locally, nationallyand internationally.

The continuing development of Norway as a knowledgeable nation will require a significant commitment to research, and CMR’s part in this is to be an important partner and contributor to the primary industries of Norway. CMR’s knowledge and expertise can play a significant role in shaping the future.

CMR’s research has provided the basis for its contributions to establishing new industrial activities. This is a tradition CMR wishes to continue. CMR therefore welcomes national and regional efforts, as well as measures that support such development.

Change is the keyword for CMR Energy’s research. Our current coreareas of focus are offshore wind, geological storage of CO2 and geothermal energy. Tomorrow it may be ocean waves or fuel cells. At the heart of our operations is the desire to create energy without harming Mother Earth or her inhabitants.
