Dear Friends in Christ: Quí Ông Bà và Anh Chị Em thân mến trong Chúa Kitô: Estimados Amigos y Amigas en Cristo:

As many of you know, I returned from a wonderful vaca-tion and was present last weekend. Just like you, I worked so hard to get ready to be gone, and then worked so much to dig out when I returned, especially with all the emails, regular mail, etc. During previous vacations, I returned emails so as to avoid hundreds to answer upon my return, and my staff would get frustrated that I was doing so “on vacation.” This vacation I was “good” and did not answer emails while away. But gee, there were so many emails to address.

So that I did not have to write several bulletin letters before I left, we decided to run the series on the architecture and sym-bolism of our beautiful Co-Cathedral church. I hope you have found this series to be informative. It continues today on pp. 10-12. Hopefully, you can now answer possible questions that your guests may have when they attend Mass with you.

While on vacation visiting other countries in Europe, it reinforced once again that all people are basically the same. Though governments & cultures/languages may differ, people want what is best for their families: to be treated fairly, enjoy similar joys/goals in life and a good job. We are all connected (“addicted”) to cell phones, computers, iPads, etc. Even when I spend time within our Vietnamese or Spanish communities (not understanding the Vietnamese language at all, and under-standing some Spanish though not all), I notice how we are so similar. So why do some people emphasize such differences or put up barriers amongst others is just amazing!

As I noted specifically at last Sunday’s 11 am Mass, “How often do we really listen to the message of the hymn’s wording versus just singing words or hearing the words for those who are not singing, presuming one is listening fully? Please re-read the wording for the Closing Hymn for last weekend’s Masses, #751 Lord of All Nations, Grant Me Grace. Here are just some of the more important points: “...grant me the grace to love all people, every race. To see each mortal as I ought, my kindred, whom your love has bought. Break down the wall that would divide your children...My neighbor’s good let me pursue...Forgive me, Lord, where I have erred by loveless act

and thoughtless word….Give me your courage, Lord, to speak whenever strong oppress the weak...that all whose lives are touched by mine, may know your healing touch divine.” What beautiful words of truth on how we are to treat one another, whether we know the people or not! Hymns are indeed prayers! I encourage and challenge you to pick up the hymnal and sing out. Even if you do not think you have a great voice, follow along with the text, praying with your mind and heart! My hope is for that “day” when every person in the church has their hymnals opened and praising God! Call me an eternal optimist—at least in heav-en we will!

As I mentioned last weekend during the announcements, we are $49,000 short in Diocesan Services (DSF) pledges—see p. 13. Last year at this time, we had exceeded our man-datory goal/amount. Our “goal” is $135,000 set by the arch-diocese. Though I use the term “goal,” it is mandatory that the parish pays this amount. If there is any shortfall in pledge amounts, the parish must pay for it out of its parish budget. You have been great in my 11 years here as pastor since we have exceeded our mandatory goal every year. When we exceed our mandatory amount, we receive back to the parish 50% of any excess pledge amounts. We did not budget any shortfall amount in our new July budget since we have exceeded our goal every year. The budget cannot ab-sorb a huge shortfall of $49,000. We are 78 pledges down since last year. For those who are registered parishioners and have not pledged, the archdiocese has sent out this past week a letter & pledge card for you to complete. Make sure your pledge card has the Co-Cathedral on it so that we re-ceive credit. If another parish is listed, mark through it and list the Co-Cathedral. If you are not registered, there are pledge envelopes near the bulletins. We can meet this man-datory amount if all pledge! Please pledge now!

We are beginning once again another session for RCIA and for Adult Catholics who lack only the Sacrament of Confirmation. See p. 12 for which process may fit your needs. If you know someone else, invite them to join us.

Gospel

Homily Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, con-substantial with the Father; through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from Heaven,

(We all are to make a bow of the body during the next 2 lines.) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in ac-cordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. E I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look for-ward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Universal Prayer / Prayer of the Faithful

SIGNIFICANCE of BOWING

A bow signifies reverence and honor shown to the names or event being mentioned. We are to do the following:

1) A bow of the head is made when the three Divine Persons (the Trinity) are named together and at the names of Jesus, of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and of the Saint in whose honor Mass is being celebrated. 2) A bow of the body (a profound bow) is made during the Creed with the words (and by the Holy Spirit…and became man—highlighted in red words in the Creed). —General Instruction to the Roman Missal, #275

Music for Mass

p. 5

Open Loft begins July 28th

What is Open Loft?

Open Loft is an opportunity to sing in the choir for a day with no obligation, other than attending a rehearsal beforehand on Sunday morning. It lasts for six weeks, and is designed for quick suc-cess.

Singing at any of our Open Loft Sundays is obligation free. How-ever, for those who do decide to join the choir after the summer, these events lead up to our annu-al Fall Choir Retreat on Septem-ber 7, which kicks off the regular season.

While Open Loft is an easy Sun-day morning drop-in choir, the regular season prepares weekly liturgies and major holidays by meeting on Wednesday night for rehearsals, 7-9 pm.

Often the music is prepared over five or more Wednesday rehears-als before we sing it at Mass. Detailed preparation over a long period of time is one rea-son why we sound good and sing fantastic repertoire.

Why would I want to do this? It’s easy to listen to music but when was the last time you made it with twenty or thirty friends? Create and strive with us! Connect to others, in person, without screens. Live your faith and serve God through the liturgy. Celebrate the journey of achievement. Our choir is pretty good. Do you really need new members? Yes! We enjoy sharing our lives, faith and music. More singers in each section reduces the load on the individual singer, which is good for all.

Page 6: CO-CATHEDRAL of the SACRED HEART2019/07/21  · CO-CATHEDRAL of the SACRED HEART Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, D.D., S.T.L. Archbishop of Galveston-Houston

Co-Cathedral Music p.6

I don’t want to sing but I want to support this ministry. Great! Please reach out so we can connect. We have non-musical needs, too.

Yes. I want to come to Open Loft. What do I do? Send an rsvp in advance of the day you would like to attend: [email protected]. We will send you a music packet and some reference recordings if you’d like to prepare. That Sunday report to the first floor choir room in Cathedral Centre at 9:45 am. (It is important to be on time) We will get acquainted, warm up, and learn one or two songs. At 10:45 am we will walk to church and sing at Mass in the choir loft.

But I don’t read Gregorian neumes. Most people who join our choir don’t when they arrive, but it is an easier system to read intervals than modern notation. If you can detect contour, you can get the hang of it quickly.

How is this guaranteed to be successful after just an hour? Choir is a team sport. Experienced members of the choir who know the repertoire already will be on hand and singing heartily. No new singers will be under pressure to be perfect, sing a solo, or even to sing something they haven’t mastered in the hour. Active listening to the person next to you is always valid in the process of learn-ing music. We know it is fast and furious, and a journey of learning, and are not judg-ing you at all!

Do I need to have experience or be able to read music? It helps but is not an absolute requirement. If you already enjoy singing at Mass you very likely have the skills to enjoy this activi-ty. Plus, we will help you. We also have adjustments we can make in difficulty, up or down, depending on the skill level of the group.

May I bring my child? We will have a Family Day on August 25. On that Sunday school aged children from 8 and up are invited to sing with a parent who is also singing. On other days children may be in the loft during Mass provided they are capable of sitting on their own.

What is the music at open loft?

Co-Cathedral Music aims to explore 1000 years of sacred music history from Gregorian chant to the present day. During this Open Loft period we will learn several Latin chant hymns from the Parish Book of Chant. You may know some of these al-ready, as these are hymns and texts from high liturgical sea-sons. A Latin pronunciation guide will be sent out: you only need to know five vowel sounds. We will also learn some beginning polyphony in the form of rounds. If time and skill level of the group allows, we will tackle some other choral settings of texts by Thomas Aquinas. Finally, the communion Chants for these weeks will be from the Graduale Simplex, which is a starter study in the Gregorian chants we sing during the year.

July 21, 2019: Gospel Reading: Luke 10:38-42 - Jesus visits the house of Martha and Mary.

The story of Jesus in the home of Martha and Mary complements the story of the Good Samaritan, which immediately precedes it in Luke's Gospel. Both stories are unique to Luke. The story of the Samaritan opens with the words “a certain man.” To-day's reading opens with the words “a certain woman.” The Samaritan is an example of how a disciple should see and act. Mary is an example of how a disciple should listen. Mary, a woman, is a marginalized person in society, like the Samaritan. Both do what is not expected of them. As a woman, Mary would be expected, like Martha, to prepare hospitality for a guest. Here again Jesus breaks with the social conventions of his time. Just as a Samaritan would not be a model for neighborliness, so a woman would not sit with the men around the feet of a teacher. Both stories exemplify how a disciple is to fulfill the dual command which begins chapter 10—love of God (Mary) and love of neighbor (the Samaritan). These are the two essentials of life in the kingdom. By using the examples of a Samaritan and a woman, however, Jesus is saying something more. Social codes and boundaries were strict in Jesus' time. Yet to love God with all one's heart and one's neighbor requires breaking those rules. The Kingdom of God is a society without distinctions and boundaries between its members. It is a society that requires times for seeing and doing and also times for listening and learning at the feet of a teacher. Source: Loyola Press

Baptismal Font The journey of Christian life begins at baptism in a font that is both womb and tomb. Through the waters of baptism one enters into the Church and into the eucharistic community united in Jesus Christ. The Co-Cathedral’s baptismal font is set in the center aisle on the same axis as the altar as a visible sign of the intimate con-nection between baptism and Eucharist. Rich symbolism is incor-porated into this font where adults and children will die to sin and become new creations in Christ through the life-giving water of baptism. The octagonal shape of the font with its eight sides and eight columns symbolizes the “eighth day”—the new and eternal creation accomplished in the death and resurrection of Jesus. The font is carved from the same deep red marble as the altar. Eight gold-plated bronze images adorn the sides and illustrate

key biblical passages which remind us of God’s saving work in human history. From the book of Genesis we see the power-ful image of the Spirit of God moving over the waters at crea-tion; a second panel depicts the story of Noah and the great flood. The Exodus story of Moses leading the Israelites through the waters of the Red Sea into the Promised Land is etched on a third panel. Gospel images sculpted in two panels depict the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan; and blood and water, symbolizing the sacraments of baptism and Eucharist, which flowed from the side of Christ as he hung on the cross. The remaining panels tell the story of the burial of Jesus and his glorious resurrection, and his command to the disciples: “Go teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” The inside of the font is fashioned from black granite with a gold cross at the center. Flowing water moving through the bowl speaks of the life-giving power of this sacrament which frees us from sin and calls us to new life in Christ. The open area around the font provides space for the community to gather for baptism or for the reception of the body of a deceased member at a funeral.

A Church for the Ages p. 10

Blessed Sacrament Chapel

From earliest tradition, the Church has reserved the Blessed Sacrament—the conse-crated bread which remains following the celebration of the Eucharist—in order to give Holy Communion to the sick and the dying and for the purpose of eucharistic devotion and adoration. The Blessed Sacrament is kept in a golden domed tabernacle, which resembles the cathedral, in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel located to the left of the sanctuary. The walls of the chapel are covered in the deep red rosa diaspro marble from which the altar, ambo and font are made. Carved in gold are the words of the Gospel: “I am the Living Bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” John 6:51; “And behold, I am with you always, even until the end of the age.” Matthew 28:20. Two bronze lamps burn continually within the chapel signifying the abiding presence of Christ in the reserved Eucharist.

Shrines to the Sacred Heart, Mary and the Saints p. 11

Roman Catholics look to the saints as models of faith—people like each of us who in their lifetime followed Christ as faithful disciples and now enjoy the fullness of life with God in heaven. The minor shrines which line the side walls of the nave bear the images of six saints who reflect the diversity of the Church and provide inspiration to the faithful today. The eight foot tall, three-quarter round statues of the saints are carved in linden wood, rasped, and painted with gesso before having transparent color and gold leaf applied. The gilded antique finish gives the images a warm and inviting glow. Like the other statues, these images are set out from the wall and appear to be floating in front of their book-matched marble backgrounds. Sculptor: Edmund Rabaser, Ortisei, Italy

In the east transept, the image of the Sacred Heart reaches out with love and compassion to the faithful believer. The

statue, towering 12 feet in height and weighing over 12,000 pounds, is carved from a single block of white

Carrara marble. The Sacred Heart appears to float against the goldleafed reeded background of carved wood. The shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the title of the

Immaculate Conception graces the back wall of the west transept. The Immaculate Conception is the patroness of the archdiocese and gazes upon the Church with a gentle mother’s love as she opens her hands to embrace all who

come to her in prayer. The pure white Carrara marble seems to come alive in the gentle features and delicate

draping carved in this beautiful statue.

Two major shrines devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Conception grace the transepts.

Six minor shrines to particular saints are set into devotional spaces along the side aisles in the nave of the Co-Cathedral.

St. Joseph is honored as the beloved spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the foster father of Jesus. Long revered as the patron of workers, St. Joseph was declared patron saint and protector of the universal Church by Pope Pius ix in 1870.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux, known as The Little Flower, is recognized as a Doctor of the Church. Thérèse is known for her “little way” striving for sanctity in the small, ordinary circumstances of life rather than in grand heroic deeds. She is venerated throughout the world for her holiness and her childlike trust in Jesus.

St. Anthony of Padua, a Franciscan friar, is one of the most beloved saints of the Church. Anthony is pictured holding a mon-strance which speaks of his deep love for Christ in the Eucharist.

St. Martin de Porres, a Dominican friar, was born in Lima, Peru of a Spanish father and African mother. He was known as Martin the Charitable and is the patron for social justice.

St. Elizabeth Ann Seton is the first native born American to be canonized by the Catholic Church. She founded the Daughters of Charity in the U.S. and is the founder of the Catholic school system in America.

St. Juan Diego was an indigenous Mexican farmer who received an apparition of the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531. In order to convince Church authorities of the truth of the apparition, the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe miraculously appeared impressed on his cloak. Juan Diego had great influence in spreading the Catholic faith within Mexico and was canonized as the first indigenous American saint in 2002.

Stewardship Reflection: 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time: July 21

That we have the courage to share our faith with those closest to us.

“…I am a minister in accordance with God’s stewardship given to me to bring to completion for you the word of God.” (Colossians 1:25)

We are all called to evangelize – to continuously grow in our relationship with Jesus and to share it with oth-ers. We may not be called to evangelize like St. Paul, but we should look for opportunities to share our faith with those closest to us, like our family, friends and neighbors. Pray for the courage to share your faith the next time the opportunity arises.

The Diocesan Services Fund (DSF) supports 60+ programs benefit-ting the 1.7 million Catholics in our Archdiocese. There are so many ministries the Archdiocese funds through DSF, ministries that no one parish can provide, such as prison ministry, hospital chaplains in the Medical Center, etc. In future bulletins so as to inform, we will highlight some of these ministries. This DSF appeal supports the ministries within our Archdiocese that Teach, Evangelize and Worship; Minister to the Poor, Sick and Incarcerated; Promote, Pre-pare and Support the Clergy; and Nurture and Strengthen Families.
