Town Hall Meeting with President Lee Myung-Bak

The President of the Republic of Korea, His Excellency Lee Myung-Bak, will visit the Ateneo de Manila University for a town hall meeting with our students. We are honored to welcome President Lee on his visit during which he will share some of his life experiences and answer a few questions from our students.

The town hall meeting will be held on Monday, 21 November 2011 at Escaler Hall from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Our President, Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Edward S. Go, will lead the group of faculty and student representatives from the Ateneo de Manila University in this event.

There are certain security procedures and protocol that we have to abide with because of the stature of our special guest. To ensure the success of this important occasion, I request for the community’s cooperation and understanding in following these guidelines:

1. Classes and activities- Classes and activities scheduled at SEC A, B, and C from 10:30am to 4:30pm during that day will be suspended. Faculty members with classes that start before 10:30am have the option to hold classes as scheduled but must end by 10:30am.  Classes and activities at SEC A, B, and C resume at 4:30pm.

2.Faculty and Staff Parking - SEC/Gonzaga Parking will be closed from 6:00am to 6:00pm for security purposes.  Faculty and staff affected are requested to park at the Lower East Parking area and part of the Upper East Parking area.

3.Student drop-off/pick-up and parking - Students are encouraged to use the JSEC Mall area as their drop-off/pick-up point. Students will not be allowed to park at the Lower East Parking area and will be redirected to the Northwest Parking area, and after 12nn, to the Grade School Parking area.

Page 3: COA Central #18 - 20 Nov 2011

4.Security Checks - Security checks will be conducted at the SEC area beginning 11:30am. All employees who hold offices at SEC A, B and C are requested to minimize their movements or to stay inside their offices from 2:00 to 4:30pm.  Those who would need to move in and out of their offices are requested to give their names to the Office of Administrative Services for the preparation of security passes which they can show, together with their university ID, to the PSG/Korean security personnel.

Haribon Foundation's MHC 2011

Haribon Foundation is a non-profit membership organization committed to nature conservation through community empowerment and scientific excellence.  It has been in the forefront of environmental protection and sustainable resource management in the Philippines.  Developed over 30 years of rigorous scientific and socio-economic research, Haribon’s niche is biodiversity conservation through protected area management.

Page 4: COA Central #18 - 20 Nov 2011

Once again, Haribon Foundation is preparing for the Million Hectare Challenge (MHC).  MHC is an annual run for a cause to help promote ROAD to 2020 (Rainforestation Organizations and Advocates), the campaign to restore 1 million hectares of forests by year 2020 using indigenous tree species.  Rainforests are the primary source of our water; they prevent soil erosion and play a major role in mitigating climate change by absorbing more carbon from the atmosphere.  The Philippine forests are in a state of degradation and it is urgent that Filipinos act, and act now.  Bringing back our forests will ensure continued ecological servicesand help prevent the natural disasters that plague our country.

Last year, more than a thousand runners and walkers took to the road and the challenge of MHC.  This year, MHC2011 hopes to reach 4,000 participants to help raise a minimum of PhP1,000,000 or 10,000 trees.  MHC2011 will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), which is a major sponsor of this event.

We invite you to participate in MHC2011.  Your support will enable us to adopt more seedlings and bring us closer to the goal of ROAD to 2020.  Each registered participant is entitled to one seedling adoption – more participants mean more trees!  Registration fee is P500 and includes one seedling adoption certificate, singlet, race bib, and timing chip.  For groups of 50 or more, we offer a 5% discount or P475 per person.  We will also schedule Registration Day on campus.  You may also bring team banners to be placed on barricades in the event area.

A special group rate of P200 is available with a minimum requirement of 100 students, staff, and faculty.  This special rate is inclusive of one seedling adoption certificate and race bib.  Each student, staff, and faculty is encouraged to invite other friends and family in taking part in this run for a noble cause.   Remember, each registered participant automatically adopts one seedling - 100 participants mean 100 seedlings to count towards ROAD to 2020. All MHC participants may opt to plant their adopted seedlings at a later date to be set by Haribon.

All arrangements for the Ateneo community are made possible through a partnership with Ateneo’s Health and Environment Cluster.  If your organization is interested in helping to form an Ateneo delegation for MHC, please contact Ms. Mica Araya from the COA-Health and Environment Cluster.  She can be reached at 0917.580.0792 or send an email to [email protected].  You may also find more information on our website: http://www.haribon.org.ph.

MHC’11 is endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
