Inhis first yearasheadcoachatDrake,MarkPhelpsguidedtheBull-dogstotheirsecondconsecutivepost-seasontournamentin2009,markingthe first time theDrake basketballprogramhadadvancedtopost-seasonplayintwoconsecutiveseasonssince1970-71. Phelpswasnamedthe25thmen’shead basketball coach at Drake onApril21,2008,afterservingasanas-sociateheadcoachatArizonaStatefrom2006-08. PhelpsledDraketoa17-16recordin2008-09andanappearanceintheinaugural CollegeInsider.com Post-seasonTournament. “Mark’sextensiveexperienceasanassistantinthePac-10andtheACC,coupledwith his commitment to theholistic development of youngmen,madehimtheidealcandidatetocon-tinue theestablishedsuccessof theDrakeBulldogs,”saidDrakeAthleticsDirectorSandyHatfieldClubb. “Markwastoutedasoneofthetopassistantcoachesincollegebasket-ball. In his first year as head coach Mark Phelps guided Drake to its second consecutive post-season tournament, participating in the CollegeInsider.com PostSeasonTournament.

Phelpswaspart ofSendek’s staffthatledNorthCarolinaStatetoa53-39(.576)recordintheAtlanticCoastConferenceregularseasonandtour-namentplayinthefinalfiveseasonsin Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack tiedforthesecondmostwinsintheACCfrom 2001-2002 through the 2005-2006season. Phelps joined the North CarolinaStatestaffin1996,servingasdirectorof basketball operations before be-comingassistantcoach in2000.Hewaspromotedtorecruitingcoordina-tor,directorofscoutingandassistantcoachwiththeWolfpackin2005. The 1996OldDominion graduatejoined theNorthCarolinaStatepro-gramafterahighlysuccessfultenureasahighschoolheadcoach. Phelps is extremely familiar withsuccessfulbasketballprograms,hav-ingcoachedhiswaytoa148-53(.736winning percentage) overall recordduring his six years directing a pairof Virginia independent high schoolteams. Phelps spent two seasons (1995-96)atAtlanticShoresChristianHighSchool in Chesapeake, Va., wherehis teams compiled a 44-12 record.His1996squadfinished20-3andsetschoolmarksforwinningpercentage(.870)andfewestlosses.

Prior to his tenure at AtlanticShores, Phelps coached four yearsatRockChurchAcademyandposteda104-41record.HisteamsplayedintheMetroConference,wherehewastwice named Coach of the Year astheEagleswonthreestraightconfer-encechampionships. Each of his last five prep teamsadvanced to the Virginia Indepen-dentSchoolStateTournament.Fourtimes,hecoachedteamstothequar-terfinalsofthestatetournamentandtwicetothestatesemifinals.Healsoserved as athletics director at bothhighschools. Phelpsandhiswife,Alissa,haveason,Owen,whowasbornonMay2,2009.

DolphPulliamhasservedasanalystonDrakeradiobroadcastssince2003. Pulliamwasathree-yearstartingforwardfortheDrakebasketballteamunderMauryJohnfrom1967-69.AsaseniorhehelpedguidetheBulldogstoa25-5recordenroutetoathird-placefinishinthe1969NCAATournament.

HeleftDrakerankedNo.11onthecareerscoringlistandNo.9onthecareerreboundinglist.HewasdraftedbytheBostonCelticsandalsoturneddownanopportunitytoplaywiththeDallasCowboys. HewasnamedrecipientoftheSamSkinnerAwardin2006bytheTrackandFieldWritersofAmericaforshowingexemplarycoopera-tionwiththemediaintrackandfield.HehasbeeninvolvedwiththeU.S.OlympicCommittee,servingasapressofficerat the1992,1996and2004SummerOlympicsaswellasthe1991,1999and2003PanAmericanGames.Hewasassistantvenuepresschiefforteamhandballatthe1984LosAngelesOlympics. MikeBurchwas namedDrake’s headstrength and conditioning coach Aug. 1,2006,afterservinginasimilarcapacityatBenedictineUniversity inLisle, Ill., duringthe2005-06season. Burch was the assistant strength and

conditioningcoachatDrakefromMayof2000throughJulyof2002,beforebeingnamedtheheadstrengthandconditioningcoachatMinnesotaState-Mankato.HebecamethestrengthandconditioningcoordinatorattheAthleticandTherapeuticInstituteinAurora,Ill.,inOctoberof2004beforemovingtoBenedictine. BurchearnedabachelorofsciencedegreeinbiologyfromBuenaVistaUniversityinMayof1997andreceivedhismaster’sdegreeinexercisephysiologyfromIowaStateinDecemberof2000.Heisacerti-fiedmemberoftheNationalStrengthandConditioningAssociation.

Drake coaching legend Maury John was named the national coach of the year in 1969 by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. John, a four-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, is Drake’s all-time winningest coach with 211 victories. He was inducted posthumously into the Missouri Valley Conference Hall of Fame in 2000.

Keno Davis was named the 2007-08 national college coach of the year by six different sources including The Sporting News, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and The Associated Press. Keno and his father, Tom, whom he succeeded at Drake, are the first father and son duo to win the national coach of the year award. Tom Davis was at Iowa when he won it in 1987.
