    Axalta Introduces

Innovative Digital ColorMeasuring Device in KoreaAxalta Coating Systems has introduced

    the latest digital spectrophotometer, the

Acquire Plus EFX for car refinish body

    shops in Korean market.

    About 30,000 digital spectropho-

tometers are in use by Axalta customers

around the world. Now this most ad-

    vanced spectrophotometer in the global

market is being introduced to refinish

    bodyshops in Korea.

The handheld digital color-measuringdevice enables body shops to achieve the

best possible color match quickly, reli-

ably and efficiently. As a result, the risk

to refinishers of costly re-work due to a

poor color match can be greatly reduced.

This technology is designed to make the

refinishers jobs easier by speeding up the

repair process and thus help bodyshops

    be more efficient.

When the Acquire Plus EFX is

placed on the vehicle near the dam-

aged area, it takes color readings fromthree angles in a patented process. The

    effects including sparkle and

flake size. Once the device is

    connected to a computer, soft-

ware uses these readings to determine

matching color formula. If the color tobe matched is different to the standard

    formula, the color matching software

AkzoNobel Adds Baleria inits Program to Reduce CO2Emission by Using Biocide-free CoatingsSpanish ferry operator Baleria has

    signed up to AkzoNobels landmark

    carbon credits program. The company

has enrolled its passenger ferry Martin

i Soler into the scheme, which finan-

cially rewards ship owners by enablingthem to generate income in the form

of carbon credits earned by reducing

    CO2 emissions.

    The landmark program was devel-

oped in 2014 in conjunction with the

Gold Standard Foundation. It is based

on ship owners converting existing ves-sels from a biocidal antifouling system

    to a premium, biocide-free advanced

hull coating such as Intersleek, part of

    AkzoNobels International line of ma-

    rine coatings. Intersleek products are

proven to reduce fuel consumption, and

    hence reduce CO2 emissions.

The Martin i Soler was converted

from an existing silyl biocidal antifoul-

    ing to Intersleek1100SR in November

    2013. The vessels performance was

monitored over the following 12months and showed a 12 percent

Axalta Coats Monument to Winners of the Tour de France with Alesta Fineextured RAL 1018 Zinc Yellow

Axalta Coating Systems has provided the coating for a monu-

ment erected by the town of Pau, France, to honor the Tour de

France and its history. Pau, the capital of Barn on the north-

ern edge of the Pyrenees, has been a stage town of the Tour 66

times. This year will mark its 67th time as a key stage of the Tour. The impressive and permanent monument has been built in

the heart of the city, in the Bois-Louis park. It comprises 104 two-

metre high totems, in the form of a circle, reminiscent of the his-

toric Stonehenge monument in Wiltshire, England. Three of the

totems are made of bronze and are uncoated the presentation

piece and a pair dedicated to the two World Wars while the

other one hundred and one totems have been cast from alu-

minium and glass and are dedicated to the winners of the Tour.

To reproduce the legendary yellow jersey of the champions, the

totems have been painted with Alesta powder coating RAL

1018 Yellow Zinc, the yellow of cheerfulness, the yellow of vic-

tory, according to Franois Bayrou, the Mayor of Pau.The primer and powder coating were supplied by Axalta and

applied by its customer Job Coater, Sedam, who was commis-

sioned to paint 111 totems in total: 101 for the current installation

to represent the champions of the Tour, and 10 more for the future

winners. A new totem will be added to the monument each year.

Alesta ZeroZinc primer was used for the pre-treatment of the

substrate. This innovative next generation of zinc-free anticor-

rosion primer from Axalta offers excellent adhesion and degas-

sing properties and is ideal for improving the finish on irregular

substrates. Axalta powder coating RAL 1018 Zinc Yellow from

the Alesta Fine Textured collection was then applied to provide

the iconic yellow. This powder coating has fast curing properties,

which was very useful for these large pieces, and its textured fin-

ish hides small surface defects to perfection. It has a fine matte

effect finish to help to beautify the substrate and to provide an

excellent scratch resistance. It is also highly compatible with Al-

    esta ZeroZinc primer.

USGBC Announces International Rankings of Top 10 Countries for LEED Green BuildingDemand for sustainable building continues to grow throughout the globe

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced its inter-

national rankings of the Top 10 Countries for LEED, the worldsmost widely used and recognized green building rating system.

The Top 10 list highlights countries outside of the U.S. that are

making significant strides in sustainable building design, con-

struction and transformation, illustrating the ever-growing inter-

national demand for LEED green buildings. The 10 countries

that made the list for 2015 are geographically and culturally di-

verse, representing seven of the worlds 20 largest single-nation

economies by gross domestic product (GDP), as well as six of

the top 11 emitters of greenhouse gases. While Canada tops

the list, Brazil and the Republic of Korea have moved up in the

rankings and Turkey and Sweden are new to the Top 10 this year.

The analysis used to develop the list ranks countries in termsof gross square meters (GSM) and numbers of LEED projects

to date. LEED-certified spaces use less energy and water re-

sources, save money for families, businesses and taxpayers,

reduce carbon emissions and create a healthier environment

for residents, workers and the larger community. The U.S., the

birthplace of LEED, is not included in this list but remains the

worlds largest market for LEED. The U.S. is the worlds largest

economy by GDP as well as the worlds second largest emitter

    of greenhouse gases.

Canada ranks number one on the list as the largest user of

LEED outside of the U.S. with 26.63 million GSM of LEED space.

There are now over 4,814 LEED-registered and LEED-certifiedprojects representing 63.31 million GSM of LEED space in Can-

ada. China (21.97 million GSM), India (13.24 million GSM) and

Brazil (5.22 million GSM), three of the four BRIC economies,

finished second through fourth on this years list, respectively. These three countries currently represent more than 33 percent

of global greenhouse gas emissions, with China and India rep-

resenting the largest source of projected growth in global emis-

    sions in the coming decades.

The Republic of Korea (4.81 million GSM) and Taiwan (3.84

million GSM) join China in providing a strong East Asian contin-

gent to the 2015 rankings. Having two of the original tiger econ-

omies join China, India and Brazil on this years list demonstrates

that LEED is taking hold in some of the worlds fastest growing

economies, and that green buildings have enormous strategic

value in terms of controlling emissions in countries that many cli-

mate watchers have noted hold the key to staving off the worstimpacts of climate change.

Germany (4.01 million GSM) and Sweden (2.54 million GSM)

represent Europe on this list, with Germany finishing sixth and

Sweden making the list for the first time in 10thplace. Both na-

tions are routinely cited for their innovation and leadership in

international efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Middle Eastern countries, United Arab Emirates (3.13 mil-

lion GSM) and Turkey (2.95 million GSM) have both had strong

green building years. The UAE increased its total amount of

LEED-certified space by 72 percent over last year, and climbed

from ninth place overall in 2014 to eighth overall in 2015. Tur-

key made the Top 10 list for the first time in the nations history, finishing ninth overall.

AkzoNobel Helps Rebuilda Wonder of the MedievalWorldAkzoNobels Decorative Paints business

is helping to recreate one of the Seven

Wonders of the Medieval World the

Porcelain Tower of Nanjing in China.

Built during the Ming Dynasty, the

    original pagoda was mostly destroyed

in the 19th century. But a highly antici-

    pated construction project is underway

which will revive the cultural icon, withAkzoNobel making a key contribution

    through its color expertise.

    Phase one involves constructing the

    main Buddhist temple, featuring the

    distinctive porcelain pagoda. After be-

ing selected for the prestigious proj-

    ect, experts from AkzoNobel carefully

selected a light yellow shade for the up-

coming painting work on the temples

porcelain walls. This color reflects the

    buildings heritage and symbolizes the

    regaining of former glories.

We are honored to be involvedin the reconstruction of the Porcelain

Tower of Nanjing, said Ruud Joosten,

    AkzoNobels Executive Committee mem-

    ber responsible for Decorative Paints.

We are keenly aware of the importance

of preserving cultural heritage, as its one

of the main pillars of our Human Cities

initiative. This project is therefore a won-

derful example of how we are striving to

help make cities around the world more

    vibrant and liveable.

Added Lin Liangqi, president ofAkzoNobel China and Managing

    Director of Decorative Paints China

and North Asia: The Porcelain Tower

of Nanjing was regarded as a national

treasure and it remains as culturally

significant now as it was hundreds of

    years ago.

    Nearly 20,000 kilograms of

    Dulux Pro Stucco an acrylate,

    copolymer-based waterborne

    texture paint has been used

to coat 8,000 square meters of porce-

lain walls. The product offers outstand-ing weather resistance, adhesion and

color versatility and has also been used

in other high profile cultural restoration

projects, such as WuHan Gemdale, West

River Moon in Xian, and Jade City in

    XinJiang Province.

    The current construction project,

known as the Nanjing Porcelain Tower

    MarketReports

Technavio has added a new re-

port on the global acrylic sur-

    face coatings market 2015-2019,

to its coatings market portfolio, which

includes reports such as emulsion coat-

ing market 2015-2019 - global industry

    analysis & forecast, powder coatings

market in Romania - trends & indus-

    try insights 2015-2019, powder coating

market in Russia- trends & industry in-

    sights 2015-2019, global architectural

coatings market 2015-2019, and auto-motive OEM coatings market in Europe

    2015-2019. Analysts estimate that this

market will grow at a rate of above four

    percent until 2019.

The new research report from discuss-

es the key drivers and trends responsible

for growth, as well as the segments with

    the maximum growth potential.

    With the development of non-slip

    flooring and increasing applicability

of hybrid coatings, it is not surpris-

ing that the construction industry seg-ment accounts for 57 percent of the

total market revenue for the period

    of 2014-2019, said Sriram Mohan,

    lead analyst, Chemicals and Materials,

    Technavio Research.

    These non-slip coatings contain a

    crystal clear polycarbonate aggregate and

find application in both interior and ex-

terior surfaces. This coating is exception-

ally durable and its advantages include

    fade resistance and non-yellowing high

gloss finish. This first of a kind acryliccoating is expected to gain wide accep-

    tance with time.

    Increasing preference for hybrid coat-

ings, which is prepared by physically

blending an acrylic polymer with another

functional polymer like an epoxy, is a key

trend that is expected to bolster market

growth by overcoming the various inad-

    equacies of conventional acrylic paints.

A segment to look out for is the con-

    struction industry sector, which ana-

lysts predict is going to grow due tothe increasing rate of urbanization in

the EMEA region, the North American

region and the Americas. The leading

companies in the global acrylic surface

coatings market are Axalta, BASF, DOW

    Chemicals, Nippon, PPG, Sherwin-

    Williams and Valspar.

Self-Healing Materials toReach $2.7 Billion by 2020Industry analyst firm n-tech Research has

    most commercially promising smart ma-

    terials products.

This report quantifies the markets for

    self-healing materials in consumer prod-

    ucts (including consumer electronics);

    construction (products such as self-heal-

ing concrete and asphalt); the automo-tive industry (both interior and exterior

    surfaces), the energy generation sector

(turbines and solar); medicine and health-

    care; and military and aerospace.

    The report provides eight-year rev-

    enue forecasts for self-healing materi-

als in all of the applications covered,

with breakouts for the various typesof self-healing materials used in each

application. It also discusses the busi-

    ness models currently being employed

by the firms in the self-healing materi-

als space, as well who n-tech thinks will

enter this space in the next few years.

Companies discussed in this report in-

    clude: Acciona, Alstom, Apple, ATFI,

    Autonomic Materials, Avecom, BASF,

    dition, self-healing materials can bring

many practical advantages to the auto-

    motive sector including improved asset

life and reductions in maintenance and

overall cost of ownership. The market for self-healing materi-

als used in the consumer products sector

    (mobile electronics, furniture and appli-

ances) is expected to reach around $480

million in 2020. n-tech believes that con-

sumer markets are will be an excellent

point of market entry for self-healing

    materials because the requirements for

    self-healing consumer products are less

demanding than for products the con-

struction industry. In the mobile electron-

ics business, the LG G Flex 2 phone isshowing how novel self-healing materi-

als can protect products, perhaps even-

    tually rendering a separate smartphone

    case unnecessary.

    n-tech sees the biggest opportunity

    from the materials perspective com-

ing from inorganic capsule and vascular

materials systems. The market for these

materials is negligible now, but will reach

$1.3 billion by 2020. The advantages of

    these capsule/vascular materials systems

are that they are truly autonomic need-ing no outside thermal or light stimulus

    to self-repair.

Lux Research ReportsSynthetic Biology Start-upsNeed 7.4 Years to LaunchFirst Chemical ProductSynthetic biology start-ups developing

technologies to convert biomass and oth-

    er non-petroleum feedstocks into chemi-

cals and materials need, on average, 7.4

years to launch a product, according toa Lux Research analysis. Using this data

to project the output from the current

crop of young synbio companies suggests

most are likely to launch first products

between 2017 and 2022, with a peak oc-

    curring between 2019 and 2020.

    While each companys approach

is unique, the lessons learned from the

first wave of bio-based materials and

    chemicals scale-ups and product launches

    provide valuable insights and lessons,

said Julia Allen, Lux Research analystand lead author of the report titled,

    Synthetic Biology: Applications and

Lessons Learned in the Field of Bio-based

    Materials and Chemicals.

Todays start-ups still have years to

go, but this historical view can give us

an early indication of which companiesare ahead of the curve and which are be-

    hind, she added.

    Lux Research analyzed and quantified

the scale-up timelines of 23 synbio com-

panies, and used it to predict the likeli-

hood of youngest startups launching a

    product. Among their findings: Oakbio,

Global Bioenergies are nearing the av-

erage time for launches. There is also a

crop of companies nearing the peak like-

lihood of releasing their first product in

2015 and 2016. Watch for scale-up andproduct announcements from firms like

Oakbio and Global Bioenergies as an

    indicator of whether these companies

will keep pace with the industry or fall

behind. Nucelis is ahead in the race.

    Among recent synbio entrants, some

firms are set to scale and launch ahead

of schedule. Nucelis aims to launch its

first product several years ahead of the

industry average, while Lygos is track-

ing to meet the industrys average for a

product launch. Laggards include KraigBiocraft, Metabolic Explorer. Other com-

panies are behind the industry average in

    launching their first product, including

    Kraig Biocraft and Metabolic Explorer.

Still, both these groups are at pilot scale,

with varying levels of momentum, so

some may well break out. The report, ti-

    tled Synthetic Biology: Applications and

Lessons Learned in the Field of Bio-based

Materials and Chemicals, is part of the

    Lux Research Bio-based Materials and

    Chemicals Intelligence service.

U.S. Waxes Demand toExceed $3 Billion in 2019U.S. demand for waxes is forecast to

grow 1.8 percent annually through 2019

to $3.2 billion. Increases in volume terms

will be supported by continued growth in

    manufacturing and residential construc-

    tion activity. However, advances will

be limited by a challenging environment

for waxes in the packaging industry, as

well as weak growth in most consumerand commercial applications. The supply

    and market share of different

    wax types will remain dynamic

as changes in the global petro-

    leum refining industry impact

the supply and pricing of petroleum de-

rived waxes, as crude oil and natural gasprices impact investment in new capacity

for synthetic waxes, and as agricultural

    commodity prices impact production of

natural waxes. These and other trends are

presented in Waxes, a new study from

    The Freedonia Group, Inc.

    Developments in the global refining

industry will have a significant impact

on the composition of the wax market.

According to analyst Joey Lovins, We

expect supply issues for petroleum waxes

as major refiners shift away from pro-ducing the lower quality base oils from

    which petroleum waxes are derived.

    Additionally, refiners are increasingly

    turning to catalytic dewaxing technolo-

gies, which do not produce wax as a

    byproduct. Limited supplies will con-

tinue to support above average growth

in petroleum wax prices, and thereby

    increase the competitiveness of synthetic

and natural wax alternatives. The use

of synthetic waxes as additives to create

high-performance, low-cost wax blendsis expected to be a major area of focus

    for product development. While synthet-

ic waxes will generally benefit from the

shift toward higher quality base oils by

    refiners, synthetic Fisher-Tropsch waxes

will face their own supply shortages due

to the delay or cancellation of new gas-

to-liquids (GTL) projects in the US fol-

lowing the collapse of crude oil prices

    in 2014.

Natural waxes will remain the small-

est segment of the market, with growthexpected for some consumer applications

such as candles and firelogs. Consumer

    preference for environmentally friendly

products or formulations and the ex-

panding use of cheaper natural wax

    types especially hydrogenated palm oil,

the least costly natural wax -- will sup-

port this growth. Volatility in the supply

and cost of natural waxes will remain

the most significant factor limiting more

    widespread adoption of these products.

    PPG DebutsSPECTRACRON SEP

Wet-on-Wet Primer forHeavy-Duty EquipmentPPG Industries industrial coatings busi-

    ness has introduced SPECTRACRON

    SEP primer, a fast-drying, two-compo-nent (2K), wet-on-wet epoxy primer that

is designed to help heavy-duty original

    equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in-

    crease production throughput without

    sacrificing corrosion resistance.

    Scott Laney, PPG product manager,

    liquid coatings, said PPG developed

Spectracron SEP primer to meet OEM de-

mands for primers with faster flash times.

Before the introduction of this product,

typical application times for primer and

coating on a pretreated metal substratewere 30 minutes, with state-of-the-indus-

try wet-on-wet flash times of five to eight

    minutes, he explained. By reducing

on production lines with 5-, 10- and

30-minute flash times, enabling OEMs to

simplify stocking and reduce inventory. The product also provides higher-gloss

finishes with no solvent-pop or soak-in is-

sues, as well as improved corrosion resis-

    tance, cycle times, masking performance

    and handling. Operational benefits in-

    clude low volatile organic compound

    (VOC) emissions, easier application, re-

duced fluid flows and flush solvents, and

    lower paint costs.

want and need a paint that is easy to use

and that has beautiful, lasting results,

Gancas said. Olympic Assure paint ap-

plies with ease and delivers a highly dura-

ble finish that stands up to the daily wear

and tear that happens on the inside andoutside of a busy home.

The Olympic Assure brand offers a

    paint-and-primer product at a value

starting at less than $20 per gallon. It is

available in more than 1,200 colors in

the Olympic paint palette and backed by

a lifetime warranty. The Olympic Assure

brand will replace the Olympic ICON

brand over the coming months, deliver-

ing the same high quality and value that

consumers have come to expect from the

Olympic brand. The Olympic brand is a line of PPG

    Architectural Coatings, a business of

    PPG Industries.

PPG Introduces ULTRAXMetal Conditioner257 for Multi-MetalAuto ComponentsPPG Industries industrial coatings business

    has introduced ULTRAX metal conditioner

    257, a near-neutral descaler solution that

removes weld scale, light oxide and otherimpurities from steel surfaces and precon-

ditions galvanized steel, white metal, alu-

minum and other non-ferrous metals prior

    to pretreatment with zinc-phosphate and

    other thin-film pretreatments.

ULTRAX metal conditioner 257 is a

    significant technical breakthrough be-

cause it enables descaling and surface

    activation of welds while pre-condition-

ing metal surfaces of parts comprised of

    mixed-metal substrates through a single

descaling system. Multi-metal compo-nents are increasingly in demand among

    automakers because their light-

    er weight promotes greater fuel

    efficiency and improved corro-

    sion resistance.

    With conventional metal-condition-

ing technologies, there is no simple wayfor manufacturers to clean and precon-

dition welded parts made with steel al-

    loys, galvanized steel and non-ferrous

    metals prior to pretreatment. ULTRAX

    metal conditioner 257 eliminates that

    problem by facilitating uniform appli-

cation of zinc phosphate, which creates

    a corrosion-resistant barrier on mixed-

    metal frames, engine cradles, control

    arms, linkages and other underbody

parts exposed to moisture, road salt,

gravel and other hazards.Randy Brent, PPG director, pretreat-

    ment and engineered products, said

there are a number of operational and

    environmental benefits associated with

    ULTRAX metal conditioner 257s near-

    neutral pH composition.

In addition to enabling a single

    descaling operation, ULTRAX metal

conditioner 257 emits no fumes, slows

iron-build in the descale tank for lon-

ger bath life, and produces less sludge

than standard acid-pickle descaling sys-tems, he explained. The result is less

waste, lower disposal costs and a safer

    operating environment.

    Performance benefits associated with

    ULTRAX metal conditioner 257 include

a dense, uniform phosphate coating on

metal parts as well as improved phos-

phate coverage on and around welded

seams and other zones affected by heat

    during welding and manufacturing, even

    after significant bath aging.

PPG offers a comprehensive arrayof electrocoat (e-coat), pretreatment,

liquid and powder products for metal

    finishing to manufacturers in numerous

industries. In addition to providing a

broad range of industrial coatings and a

full spectrum of color choices, PPG said

that it backs its products with industry-

    leading technical expertise delivered

    through an international customer sup-

port network. With more than 50 years

of experience in e-coat, PPG has the ex-

pertise to solve the industrys toughestcorrosion challenges. CW

    Business Corner Strategies & Analysis

    by Phil Phillips, PhD

Project management is designed to make better use of ex-

isting resources by getting work to flow horizontally as

well as vertically. You might ask how this could work

since there are line managers responsible for P&L functioning

in these same channels. It works when all persons understand

their respective rolls. This approach does not destroy the vertical,

routine flow of work, but simply requires that the line organizationstalk to one another horizontally so work will be accomplished effort-

lessly through the organization. The vertical flow of work is still the

responsibility of the line managers. The horizontal flow of work is

the responsibility of the project managers, and their primary effort is

to communicate and coordinate activities horizontally between the

    line organizations.

IN EVERY ORGANIZATION, there are natural gaps that

occur between both vertical and horizontal functions. These

gaps can and will create business operational islands. One

of the key roles of successful Project Management is to figu-

ratively & functionally, link these islands. Fundamentally,

Project Management success is dependent on the completionof an action within the constraints of time, cost, and perfor-

mance. However, the definition of the projects success should

be expanded to include an additional four elements:

    With acceptance by the customer/user

With minimum or mutually agreed upon scope changes

Without disturbing the main work flow of the organization

    Without changing the corporate culture

Some resources would contend that there are no real differ-

ences between Project and Product Management. CHEMARK

would certainly disagree based on the one extremely important

exception . . . . . the Project Manager must focus on the end date

of his or her project. In other words theres a beginning and an

end to a project for the Project Manager.

Comparatively, a Product Manager usually views his or hertask as a never-ending one and really not willing to admit that

the product line will ever be brought to an end. The Product

Manager will always attempt to keep the product line alive by

creating product line innovation spin-offs as well as attempting

to establish demand in adjacent markets.

It is important to understand that once the product has been

developed the Product Manager takes control through the entire

product life cycle . . . . from the total roll-out market introduc-

    tion; pricing; organizational functionality, etc.

Additionally, a very competent Project Manager, once the

product has been fully developed, could become the Product

Manager going forward. Finally, the Project Manager and the Product Manager do,

in fact, share in the element of control. Although they are both

measured and held responsible for how well (relatively speak-

ing) they control all elements essential to their success, they both

have little, if any direct control.

They must control these important elements through direct

    influence and top-management support.

For example, Product and Project Management functions do not

directly control the following elements important to their success:

    Money; Manpower; Equipment; Facilities; Materials;

    Information; Technology.

These resources are controlled by the line managers, func-tional managers or resource managers. The two (Project &

Product) managers must, therefore, negotiate with line manag-

ers for all resources. The mortar between the bricks holding up

a success Activity Wall and critical substance for Both Project

    & Product Managers are:

A solid routine effective relationship with the line managers

who directly assign resources to projects.

A capability of the functional employees to report vertically

to line managers at the same time that they report horizon-

tally to one or more project managers.

The Project Managers manage projects that are finite while

the Product Managers usually are infinite . . . . . most all otheraspects are similar in function. CW
