CS Unitec, Inc., a leading manufacturer of specialtypneumatic, electric and hydraulic power tools, recentlyannounced their new line of Trelawny™ SurfacePreparation Tools for marine, shipyard, oil & gas andoffshore applications. Designed for worker safety andincreased operator comfort, they are ideal for prepar-ing surfaces for coatings work in hazardous environ-ments. Primarily air-powered, these low-maintenancetools provide a more effective and safer means ofremoving coatings, corrosion and accumulated materi-als on steel and other metals when readying surfacesfor coatings applications.

The Trelawny™ line includes needle/chisel scalers, deckhammers, hand-held scaling hammers and more. Non-sparking needles, chisels and piston heads made fromAluminum Bronze (AlBr) and Copper Beryllium (CuBe)are available to reduce risk of sparks in volatile atmos-

pheres. Dust extraction ports are integrated into mosttools to control dust and debris that could containlead, nuclear particles or other dangerous materials.

Many tools in the Trelawny™ product line also includeVibro-Lo™ Vibration Reduction Technology, allowingthem to operate with 7x less vibration than standarddeck hammers, scalers and scarifiers. This advance-ment in engineering reduces the user’s risk of develop-ing Hand/Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) and CarpalTunnel Syndrome.

In addition to a broad line of surface preparation tools,CS Unitec offers explosion-proof, pneumatic- and elec-tric-powered axial fans and air movers to ventilate, exhaust and cool work spaces. The fans are ATEX certi-fied Ex II 2 GcT3 to be safer for use in Ex Zones andenvironments where explosion hazards are present.

To meet the needs of sensitive applications wherehand tools are required, CS Unitec offers a completeline of safety hand tools and machine chisels inAluminum Bronze and Copper Beryllium. These includehammers, wrenches, sockets, chisels, wedges, scrap-ers and more. The non-sparking and corrosion-resis-tant properties of these tools make them safer for usein hazardous areas and hot work zones where steelhand tools are not permitted.

In addition to the aforementioned tools, CS Unitec’sportable air and hydraulic power tool line includesportable mixing stations, band saws, reciprocatingsaws, hacksaws, magnetic drills and more, many ofwhich are ATEX classified for use in hot zones, haz-ardous environments and Ex zones. tance from the operator and require another individualto recognize a problem with the air supply and takeaction to alert the blast operator. Any delay in notify-ing the operator creates a dangerous, life-threateningsituation for that blast operator. The National Instituteof Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) grantedClemco an extension of approval for our Apollo Seriestype-CE respirators to place this device inside our res-pirator. NIOSH approves respiratory devices andrequires users to maintain those devices with thesame components they have approved.

Properly preparing surfaces for protectivecoatings saves lives. Regrettably, examplesof improper preparation are what we see fea-tured in the headlines. Improper surfacepreparation leads to premature onset of cor-rosion. Corroded steel structures fail, caus-ing extensive property damage, humaninjury, or loss of life, and cost billions of tax-payer dollars. One study estimates that cor-rosion costs $1,500 per person in the UnitedStates every year.

Recent headlines involving corroded steel structuresinclude explosions of gas and oil pipelines in California,a ruptured pipeline in West Virginia, and a corroded

beam at a shopping mall inOntario, Canada. These preventabledisasters caused several deaths, scores of injuries, and extensiveproperty damage.

Beyond surface preparation, blast-ing is used for shot peening, aprocess that relieves stress andstrengthens metal surfaces. Ourshot peening machines are usedaround the world to stress relievecritical aircraft engine compo-nents to ensure safe flight andprotect airline customers, who

count on properly manufactured and maintained air-craft.

It is not an exaggeration to say that blasting has thou-sands of applications. It is safe to say that no shortcutsshould ever be taken with any products or processesthat protect human life. And Clemco is proud to play arole in the efforts to ensure human safety.

Clemco is ASME- , CE- and ISO 9001:2008-certified, andoperates in a lean manufacturing environment. Wecomply with OSHA, NIOSH, and ANSI regulations in ourdesigns and practices to bring safe, high-quality prod-ucts to market.

Product Story

Through the products we engineer, market, and sell,Clemco finds its core purpose in protecting and improv-ing people’s lives. Our core purpose was crafted in partto inform our workforce aboutthe positive impact of theirefforts on the lives of peoplearound the world. Our corepurpose is “Clemco fights cor-rosion and improves the sur-faces and strength of man-made products and structuresthat have an effect on thequality and safety of peoples’lives”.

Serving a wide spectrum ofindustries, such as construction, aerospace, automo-tive, petrochemical, power generation, manufacturingand many more, our equipment serves to prevent andfight corrosion, stress relieve critical com-ponents, and finish consumer and industrialproducts. Abrasive blasting is a behind-the-scenes technology that touches an incredi-bly high percentage of products and struc-tures used in every-day life.

Safety and performance feature prominentlyin the Clemco philosophy. Our products haveintegral safety features, and our line of PPEoffers NIOSH-approved respirators, breath-ing-air filters, carbon monoxide monitorsand alarms, and blast suits to fully-protectour blast-operator customers while theyperform very important work.

Unique to Clemco is our new CMS-3 carbon monoxide(CO) monitor/alarm. This tiny device mounts inside the

blast respirator so that the blast operator is immedi-ately aware that his breathing-air is contaminated withCO. The CMS-3 has visual, auditory, and vibratoryalarms, which alarm when CO reaches 10 parts per mil-lion. The important difference between this device andother CO monitor models, offered by Clemco and oth-ers, is that all of the other devices are located at a dis-
