Reflections on the
Cover Page
The original Marathi article of Shri Shreedhar Parab
published earlier under the column ‘Mukhaprushtha
Pahatana’ in Yoga Varta has been excellently
translated into English by Shri Nitin Tawde (YVN's
Yoga Teacher of 39th batch of YTTC). The said English
version of Shri Shreedhar Parab's article in Marathi
is being published hereunder with profound thanks to
Shri Nitin Tawde whose mobile no. is 9819186655).
Seeing the first prize winning beautiful poster
prepared by Dipannita Sarkar (one of the talented
students of 41st Yoga Teachers Training Course, Dadar)
used most appropriately for the cover page of this
month’s Yoga Varta, the first thought came in the mind
that probably no other picture than this could have so
effectively reiterated the message of 4th International
Day of Yoga embodied in its tag line - ‘Yoga for
Harmony & Peace’.
The Honourable Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi, while
addressing the General Assembly of the United Nations on 27th
September 2014, put forward a proposal for consideration of all Nations,
that 21st June be celebrated as 'International Yoga Day' worldwide and
masses shall be motivated to practise most beneficial Yoga. His proposal
was spontaneously seconded by leaders of various member countries
like United States of America, Canada, China, etc. As a result, the
proposal to observe 21st June as 'International Day of Yoga'- (IDY) was
passed unanimously on 11th December 2014 in the UN General
Assembly having 193 members. The Prime Minister personally took

interest in its organisation and hence, this special day having historical
importance from Indian point of view, was celebrated on a large scale
with lots of fanfare and with great enthusiasm across the entire Nation
and in various other countries too. Our saints and sages have cultivated
broader perspective that ‘whatever good ideas or thoughts we come
across anywhere in the world, shall always be welcomed, as per the
verse from ‘Upanishada’ - "Am Zmo ^Ðm… H«$Vdmo `§Vw {dœV…&' This is the reason
why our saints and sages feel that ‘the entire Universe is my home’ - "ho{dœ{M _mPo Ka&' In ancient Indian culture, the various scriptures and arts
have been created for the overall development and well-being of the
human race by contemplating over whatever that is seen useful and
wonderful as per this shloka - "OJmÀ`m H$ë`mUm g§Vm§À`m {d^y{V&'One
amongst them is ‘Yoga’ which is very important and useful applied
science. Every Indian must be feeling pleased and proud to see our
‘Yogashastra’ being accepted at the Global level.
Even this date ‘21st June’ has been very thoughtfully selected as
‘International Day of Yoga’. This day marks the beginning of the ‘summer
solstice’ in northern hemisphere. This day is considered as an important
day in many parts of the world. More importantly, 21st June is the
longest day for all the countries in northern hemisphere. On this day, the
Sun is available for maximum period to provide its light, vigour and life-
supporting energy to the people in many countries. In the ancient Indian
scriptures, it is mentioned - "gy`© AmË_mOJVñVñWwfü&' which means the
Sun is the Master of the Universe, Soul and Protector of all living beings.
It is an age old concept that one can express his desire for good health
with the Sun God and gets the same fulfilled as mentioned in this verse
- "Amamo½`§ ^mñH$am{XÀN>oV²&' Considering all these factors, the selection of
the date 21st June as ‘International Day of Yoga’ seems to be the most
appropriate.
These days quite many days of every month are allotted for some or
the other specific purpose and are celebrated with great fanfare. Most
of them are celebrated only as some kind of event. More often, the basic
concept or the core idea is forgotten. Hardly anyone remembers such
7 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
days later on. If the ‘International Day of Yoga’ is also celebrated
ceremoniously only on a particular day and the objectives and purpose
don't remain alive in public memory, then this day too would fail to serve
its purpose of public welfare in true sense. However, seeing the way the
entire world celebrated the first, second and third ‘International Day of
Yoga’ on 21st June of 2015, 2016 and 2017 respectively with sincerity and
immense enthusiasm, it gives confidence that not only this year but every
year this International Day of Yoga (IDY) will be celebrated with same
enthusiasm and will provide an inspiration for many people across the
world to practise Yoga and to adopt Yoga as ‘lifestyle’. Swami
Kuvalayananda, the Guru of our honourable Nimbalkar Guruji and
Founder of Kaivalyadham Institute at Lonavala had long ago announced –
“Yoga has a complete message for humanity. It has a message for the
human body, for the human mind and for the human spirit”. Getting
inspired from the ‘International Day of Yoga’, if majority of people give
their sincere efforts, then the future of the mankind will certainly be
brighter. The science of Yoga has lot to offer to everyone in this world for
physical and mental health, containment and peace. Lack of mutual trust
is distinctly observed in today's world to a large extent. Not only amongst
the various nations but even within the country also, a lot of dreadful and
gruesome incidents like terroristic acts, battles, quarrels and fights are
taking place amongst various sects and religions on number of reasons
or disputes. No wonder, in such a scenario, if all the peace-loving people
in the world look upon ‘Yoga’ as a ray of hope.
‘Yoga’ doesn't mean only some Yogasanas, Bandhas, Mudras,
Pranayamas & Meditational practices. Actually speaking, ‘Yoga’ is advised
as a multifaceted, peaceful, affectionate and healthy lifestyle that
establishes purity and honesty for the overall development and progress
of human being. The word ‘Yoga’ encompasses a far larger meaning. It
includes various branches of Yoga like Gyana Yoga, Karma Yoga, Bhakti
Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Laya Yoga as also the Ashtanga Yoga (also
called as Raj Yoga) of Maharshi Patanjali and the Hatha Yoga which is the
Yoga Varta : June 2018 8
`moJdmVm©
most popular one today. Fundamentally, all of them were advised as path
for spiritual upliftment. However, very few people are ready for the
required dedicated, long term practice of Yoga under the proper guidance.
Generally, masses are attracted towards Yoga for psychosomatic health,
happiness, contentment, peace and for overall personality development.
Although the ultimate goal or the final destination of Yoga is to attain the
blissful state of Samadhi (Kaivalyavastha) that is to achieve the highest
spiritual status, not everyone is having the required zest or capacity for the
same. One thing is for sure that it has been experienced and proved that
the Yoga sadhak who treads on the path of Yoga as per his own capacity too,
gets many benefits like physical and mental health, energy, happiness,
qualitative upliftment, proficiency in work skills and many more. It is seen
today that people from various countries are practising Yoga with different
motives. Amongst them, some have chosen Yoga practices as simple
supplementary treatment for diseases, ailments and certain physical
problems or as best preventive measure for avoiding such diseases and
problems. Yoga fulfills the various expectations of such people quite
satisfactorily when practised faithfully, with consistent regularity and in a
proper manner. That's why the verse given below, from the famous
scripture ‘Hatahpradipika’ is looked upon by all as a lighthouse in an ocean
of life, which is guiding as well as comforting for the mind -
Aeof VmnVßVmZm§ g_ml`_R>mo hR>…&Aeof `moJ`wº$mZm§ AmYmaH$_R>mo hR>…&& (h.à. 1.10)
This means Yoga is like a sanitorium for those who are suffering from
various problems in the life and as a firm support like a tortoise for
faithful and ardent practitioners of Yoga who follow and study various
types of Yoga.
The word 'Yoga' is basically derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Yuja’
which means ‘to join’. From this point of view, it is felt that Yoga can be
very useful to unite all – young and old, males and females from various
different religions, castes, languages, cultures, etc. with each other. The
verse - "`moJ… H$_©gw H$m¡ec_²&' in ‘Bhagvad Gita’ by Yogeshwar Shri Krishna
9 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
clearly states that whoever practises Yoga, naturally experiences
remarkable expertise and utmost ease in every action. This way, if people
from various countries performing in different fields can elevate their
level of expertise by practising Yoga, then it is needless to say that these
countries too will progress rapidly.
The definition of health by World Health Organization (WHO) is very
much matching with the Indian concept of health in Yoga. According to
WHO definition, 'health is a state of complete physical, mental and social
well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity'. This
comprehensive health depends upon five main factors. The first factor is
‘genetics’ which is termed as destiny, fate, luck, merit or demerits of the
past, etc. This comprises of the virtues and vices passed on from our
ancestors. The next factor that follows is ‘environment’ or the habitat
where we live or work or spend our maximum time. It is not possible to
gain complete control or make any radical changes in these two factors.
Hence, these two factors are considered as non-changeable or non-
modifiable factors of health. The next three factors influencing health
are ‘Ahar’ (Intake), Vihar (Activities ) and ‘Vishranti’ (Rest). We can
change these factors, according to our needs, desires and as per own
capacity, means we can gain control over them. In that sense, Ahar,
Vihar and Vishranti are considered changeable or modifiable factors of
health. Yogeshwar Bhagwan Shri Krishna emphasises through the
aphorism below that it is very important for a Yoga Sadhak to adopt a
lifestyle comprised of appropriate Ahar, Vihar and Vishranti.
`wº$mhma{dhmañ` `wº$Moï>ñ` H$_©gw&`wº$ñdßZmd~moYñ` `moJmo ^d{V Xþ…Ihm&& (^.JrVm-6.17)
This means, Yoga which destroys all sufferings is achievable to only those
Sadhakas who observe appropriate Ahar, Vihar, Vishranti, follow right
dealings in their work and the one whose sleep and awake timings are
balanced.
The happiness of mind is of utmost importance whether the Yoga is
followed with very hard practice for attainment of ‘Kaivalyavastha’ (to
Yoga Varta : June 2018 10
`moJdmVm©
achieve the blissful Samadhi for spiritual experience of the divine state
of getting merged into the cosmic existence) or practised for obtaining
overall health with the experience of physical, mental, social and
spiritual well-being. Mind becomes pleasant with the practice of Yoga
and the Yoga practised with pleased mind derives best results. Pleased
mind easily and quickly gets concentrated and can easily be brought
under the control of the Sadhaka. Only then the purpose of Yoga
Sadhana is fulfilled to a great extent. Many suggestions are offered in
Yogic Science to maintain and enhance the happiness of the mind. The
important guidance is given by Maharshi Patanjali for the Sadhakas in
the shloka below :
_¡ÌrH$éUm_w{XVmonojmUm§ gwIXþ…InwÊ`mnwÊ`{df`mUm§^mdZmV{üÎmàgmXZ_²&& (nm.`mo.gy. 1.33)
This means if we cultivate ‘friendliness’, ‘compassion’, ‘joyfulness’ and
‘equanimity’ towards the emotions ‘pleasure’, ‘pain’, ‘virtue’ and ‘vice’
respectively and implement them in the day-to-day living, then the mind
will always be in a pleasant state. It is felt that complex problems,
disputes and quarrels among various nations can be settled without
shedding a drop of blood only if maximum people in the world cultivate
these four emotions namely, ‘friendliness’, ‘compassion’, ‘gladness’ and
‘equanimity’ by practising Yoga and thereby establishing friendly
dialogue with a strong desire of peaceful coexistence and solid
foundation of trust between the nations and certainly not by insane
usage of deadly arsenal that is amassed on a huge scale.
The Ashtanga Yoga advocated by Maharshi Patanjali has eight limbs
namely, Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyan
and Samadhi out of which the first two limbs Yama and Niyama are of
slightly more importance. Amongst them, the five 'Yamas' advocated by
Maharshi Patanjali that is Ahimsa – non violence, Satya – truth, Asteya –
non-stealing, Brahmacharya – non-continence and Aparigraha – non-
hoarding of more than necessary wealth or goods and amassing
materialistic objects greedily - are the kind of five self-restraints to be
11 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
observed while living in the society. The observance of these five Yamas
are essential for the Yogasadhaka for the peaceful social life as well as
the progress in Yoga. If people across the globe follow these five Yamas,
though not strictly 100% as ‘Mahavrata’ but to the best possible extent
as ‘Anuvrata’, then too all the people in the world can have a pleasant
experience of living on this planet with mutual cooperation, peace and
happiness. Like these five Yamas, there are five 'Niyamas' namely,
‘Shaucha’ – Purity (physical, mental and emotional), ‘Santosh’ –
permanent contentment of mind, ‘Tapa’ – solid and concentrated efforts
for prolonged period, ‘Swadhyay’ – (self awareness, introspection and
reading spiritual literature, contemplation, meditation), ‘Ishwar
Pranidhan’ – (to bow down to the all powerful, mighty creator of the
Universe after performing our duties). These five Niyamas are to be
observed devotedly by the Yoga Sadhaka for his personal health,
progress and elevation of all virtues. If the Yoga Sadhakas honestly
observe these Yama and Niyama to the maximum extent feasible, their
progress in Yogabhyas will be expediated and as the number of such
progressive Sadhakas increase all across the world, then surely the
human race can have the experience of heaven on this Earth itself.
The ‘Omkar Sadhana’ is of immense importance in Yoga. This shortest
single syllable, Mantra made up of three alphabets ‘A’, ‘U’ , ‘M’ and half
nasal consonant is extremely subtle and most effective Mantra. In the
ancient scripture namely ‘Patanjal Yoga Darshan' by Maharshi Patanjali,
‘Aum’ is described as the symbol of the almighty ‘Parmeshwar’ who is
attributeless, formless, unseen and without any beginning or end. It
means, this divine ‘Omkar Sadhana' lifts any Sadhaka who has adopted
‘Omkar Sadhana’ from heart to highly spiritual level irrespective of his
caste, religion or country. Hence, Maharshi Patanjali says "V‚mnñVXW©^mdZ_²&' means Omkar japasadhana shall be chanted with the full
awareness of meaning of Omkar. He further says that, with such a Japa
Sadhana, Yoga Sadhaka will gain subtle but very important spiritual
benefits alongside the many physical benefits. Omkar Sadhana has
incredible power of delivering sound health. Sadhaka can achieve
Yoga Varta : June 2018 12
`moJdmVm©
progress and the capability of facing any crisis by treading his way through
it with the help of Omkar Japasadhana.
So, with the auspicious occasion of ‘4th International Day of Yoga’,
on 21st June 2018, let's once again determine to practise Yoga
systematically, devotedly and consistently as best as possible by
incorporating ‘Omkar Sadhana’ and let’s all pray God by making slight
change in the ‘Pasaydaan’ i.e. prayer of the great Sage Shri Sant
Gyaneshwara as follows for spreading happiness and peace in the entire
world with help of this invaluable gift of Yoga Shastra presented by India
to the world -
AmVm {dœmË_H|$ Xod|& `oU| `moJ`k| Vmofmd|&Vmofmo{Z gd©OZm Úmd|Ÿ& `moJngm`XmZ h|&&
If majority of people in the world today come forward willingly,
loyally and confidently to accomplish this sacred mission, then this 'Forth
International Day of Yoga' on 21st June 2018 will prove to bring forth for
everyone in the world a future offering complete health, happiness,
contentment and peace. If it happens so, then all the peace-loving
people in the world will utter the famous quote of Shri Sane Guruji with
slight change as - Iam Vmo EH${M Y_©& OJmcm `moJ Anm©dm&...

LET GO EGO
Ego i.e. 'I'ness is one of the vices which is very difficult to overpower.
Ego can overshadow all good thing of a person. Of course, there is
nothing wrong if one feels reasonably proud about one's own virtues
and/or impressive personality, etc. Such persons normally know their
vices, weaknesses or shortcomings also and hence, they rarely become
too much egoistic. However, there are many egoistic persons who make
much of their so-called virtues or good behaviour, etc. Surprisingly, there
are also some persons who take undue pride in boasting even their vices
or false prestige, etc. In short, ego - whether arising out of virtues, vices
or false prestige, etc. - ultimately it proves harmful to happy life.
There is a well-known story which is often quoted in 'Kirtan' i.e. a
narration of moral or spiritual stories punctuated by music. In 'Purana',
i.e. ancient sacred poetical composition, Narada is reckoned as a great
devotee of Lord Vishnu. Narada is specially known for continuously
chanting the name of God as ‘‘Narayana, Narayana.’’ Lord Vishnu,
therefore, used to like Narada very much. This close relationship with
God maintained for such a long period made Narada feel that he was the
only one true devotee of Lord Vishnu. Thus, Narada was overpowered
by ego of devotion. Realising this, Lord Vishnu decided to teach Narada
a good lesson in this regard.
Once Narada came to meet Lord Vishnu and as usual, started singing
in his praise. When Narada was about to leave, Lord Vishnu said,
''My dear Narada! Today, I want to test your devotion towards me. So,
fill your copper-pot fully with water and do three Pradakshina i.e.
Yoga Varta : June 2018 14
`moJdmVm©
complete three rounds around the earth holding carefully the said pot in
the hands so that not a single drop of water from the pot falls on the
ground.''
''Lord, I feel it is a very simple task for me. If you permit, I want to
start the Pradakshina right from this moment itself,'' saying this, Narada
immediately filled his copper-pot with water and started walking very
cautiously, holding the pot firmly in both the palms, fixing eyes on the
water in the pot and concentrating his mind to ensure proper balancing
of body movements so that not a single drop of water spills out of the
pot. He was thus totally engrossed in fully complying the condition of
the test stipulated by Lord Vishnu. Due to this, Narada totally forgot his
daily routine of chanting the name of Lord Vishnu.
After successfully completing three rounds around the earth, holding
copper-pot filled with water in his hands, Narada victoriously kept the
pot in front of the Lord's feet and stood anxiously waiting to hear words
of appreciation from Lord Vishnu. Looking at Narada with mysterious
smile on the face, Lord Vishnu said, ''Narada, I am happy to see that you
could complete three Pradakshinas. But tell me, whether you ever
remembered me while doing the Pradakshina?'' In reply, Narada said,
''Lord, my mind was all the time engaged in complying the condition you
had stipulated for the Pradakshina. Therefore, I did not remember you at
all while doing three Pradakshinas.''
"It's all right. Let us now go to the house of one farmer,'' said Lord
Vishnu. Narada and Lord Vishnu changed their appearances and arrived
at the farmer's house. Seeing two unknown persons standing in front of
his house, the farmer came forward and whole-heartedly welcomed
them saying, "I am very happy to welcome both of you. I feel that it is
the grace of Narayana (i.e. Lord Vishnu) that you have come to my
house.'' Lord Vishnu, in the garb of an old man, asked the farmer, ''Can
we know what are the activities you and your family members do
throughout the day?'' The farmer said, ''We are farmers. My children
have gone to the farm for work. I do all my work uttering pious name of
15 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
Lord Narayana. My wife cooks food and serves it to all of us when we
come back home after doing work at our farm. We eat food treating it
as 'Prasad' i.e. sacred gift from Lord Narayana. We take requisite rest
saying Narayana, Narayana. After rest, we resume our work by grace of
Narayana. In the evening, we go to Narayana's temple located close-by.
We meditate there sitting before the idol of Narayana and also sing few
bhajans in praise of Lord Narayana. After eating Narayana's prasad, we
come back home. Before sleeping, I usually narrate some interesting
stories of Lord Narayana to small children. Thereafter, all of us go to
sleep gratefully remembing Narayana and profusely thanking him for his
kind grace. Waking up early in the next day's morning, we see Lord
Narayana in our palms and with his blessings, begin our daily chore.
This, in short, is my daily routine. By grace of Narayana, we are quite
happy and contented in our lives. I wish to breathe last, taking the sacred
name of Lord Narayana.''
After hearing the farmer, Narada felt ashamed of his own ego of
devotion. Now he could understand why Lord Vishnu made him to
undergo that test as also to visit this farmer's house. Narada profusely
thanked the farmer for his hospitality and appreciated his devotion
towards Lord Narayana. While parting, Narada could not stop
spontaneously chanting ‘‘Narayana, Narayana’’.

An Exalerating Experience
E
Mrs Jinal Chirag Shah(45th Yoga Summer Yoga Course Student from Navi Mumbai)
I was extremely excited to attend the 45th Yog Summer Workshop.
My Yog Teachers, Gopal Vazirani Sir, Vijaya Laxmi Ma'am and Gargi
Obeiroi Ma'am had inspired me to enhance my life with Yog. Thus, this
workshop was a great opportunity for me to take one more step towards
keeping my body a little healthier.
When I entered the Yog Bhavan at around 7.30am on 20th May 2018,
a vibrant breeze greeted me. I saw several Junior/Senior Teachers,
students and participants already assembled at the venue. They seemed
to breathe positive energetic vibes to everyone around them.
The organisation was very efficient. Cloth bags were given to keep
our footwear. After giving lunch coupons to those who had already
registered themselves at just Rs 100, we were guided towards the
breakfast table. After having a tasty and healthy breakfast of Poha and
Tea/Coffee, I chose to sit right in the middle of the first row to have a
clear view of the proceedings.
Innumerable people had sacrificed their Sunday morning sleep to
attend this event. It was worth it! The crowd consisted of people from
the 33 centres of Yog Vidya Niketan of the entire Navi Mumbai. The
arrangement was superb! There was a carpeted floor and numerous
chairs were present for people who were uncomfortable to sit down. Yog
Books written by our Guruji - Shri Sadashiv Nimbalkarji and other Senior
Teachers were on display. Also, we proudly admired all the trophies and
awards (placed in a glass cabinet) won by our Guruji.
The beautiful Gayatri Thakkar Ma'am commenced the event and the
group of almost 500 people listened to her eagerly. The Koel Kanthi of
Yog Vidya Niketan - Malbika Biswas Ma'am uttered three Omkars and
Yoga Varta : June 2018 24
`moJdmVm©
recited the Yog prayer with everyone. Our Senior most teacher -
Durgadas Savant Sir welcomed us warmly and introduced Yog, it's
benefits and shared a few details about Yog Vidya Niketan. Then, we
were raptly engaged in the history of Yog Vidya Niketan narrated by
Santosh Basetthi Sir.
It was fascinating to hear the birth of this wonderful Institute of Yog.
No wonder, our Guruji's Moto - ‘Yog At Every Home’ has touched
immense lives. Guruji along with our Teachers have cured the ailments
of many due to their blessings and teachings of Yog. I am seriously
blessed to be a part of this Yog Family.
We were supposed to have a Kriya Demonstration, Pranayam
Workshop and Dhyana Workshop during the entire event. Gayatri
Thakkar Ma'am finally announced that the Kriya Demo would soon
begin. With bated breath I awaited to watch some stunning feats. And
indeed they were!
Manjushree Deshpande Ma'am then took over and invited the
Demonstrators. Several Junior Teachers assembled with some of the
Senior Teachers. She informed us that the Shudhi Kriyas would seem
tough and unusual. However, everyone could do them. We just needed
correct guidance. These Shudhi Kriyas have been useful to clean our
pitta, cough and vayu. Ultimately, it leads to the improvement of our
Arogya (health) manifold. The auidence was pleasantly shocked to watch
the demonstrators perform the Douthi, Neti and Nauli Kriyas. They
cleaned the abdominal and nasal cavities in our bodies.
Some demonstrators poured water from one nostril to another, a
few gulped a soft white cloth of 11 meters, which was to be removed
within 20 minutes (Pradip Gholkar Sir gulped a 22 meter cloth), while
some others did Kapalabhati Kriya. Rubber tubes were inserted inside
the nostrils and removed from the mouth. Savant Sir and Mishra Sir did
this Kriya using a Sutra oiled with castor oil. What a feat!
In addition, it was amazing to see that using water one could cleanse
our body in so many ways. Savant Sir performed the challenging
Gajakarani Kriya so effortlessly. He poured out water from his stomach
25 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
just the way an elephant pours out from his trunk! Also, while doing these
Kriyas few of the Demonstrators did asanas, exercises and boxing too!
After few hours, the audience was asked to stand and stretch the bodies
to ease the stiffness caused due to sitting for a prolonged time.
After the excitement, it was time to calm our minds. Neha Kerure
Ma'am took our Pranayam Workshop. She not only relaxed our tensed
minds and muscles but also guided us on how to use Pranayam in our
daily routine to curb our regular issues. I had heard a lot about Neha
Ma'am but that day I truly experienced her Yogic Teaching and I was
overwhelmed with joy and peace. Neha Ma'am introduced Pranayam
along with the demonstrators. The various Yogic Breathing Techniques
were taught. Purak (Inhalation), Rechak (Exhalation) and Kumbakh
(Retention) are termed as the integral parts of our Pranayamic breathing
procedure.
Sahebdin Das Sir took over the next leg of the event. All the Junior/
Senior Teachers and Organisers were felicitated with a beautiful red rose
and a special keychain with Guruji's picture on one side and the logo of
Yog Vidya Niketan on the other. I am sure the receivers were glad to
receive this felicitation at the hands of our Guruji - the Padmashri Award
winner.
Last but not the least, came the Dhyana Workshop by Pradip Gholkar
Sir. Along with the demonstrators, he perfectly guided us with the
different utterences of Omkar.
We had a great lunch later and thoroughly enjoyed the entire event.
Thank you Teachers for excellent guidance and blessings!

YOGA IN DAY TO DAY LIFE
E
Arvinder Sehdeva(1st Prize Winner Essay - 41st YTTC, Vashi Student.

Blessed are those who are free of medical
problems. However, such persons are an exception
rather than a rule. Physical ailments are part and
parcel of life. From times immemorial, man has
been fighting ailments and diseases. The scientific
developments of 19th century and 20th century
finally gave rusults to mankind's consistent war
against diseases. Mankind developed cure for
dreaded diseases like leprosy, plague, cholera, tuberculosis, small pox,
typhoid malaria, etc. As a result, life expentancy increased in most
countries across the globe in 20th century. In India, the life expectancy at
birth in 1960 was 41 years and the same rose to 65 years in 2015. Similar
increase in life expectancy was observed in other countries too.
Despite the improvements in healthcare and sanitary conditions; has
our disease burden decreased? despite having a global army of doctors,
advancement in technology for diagnostics and the latest pharma
products; most healthcare services across the globe are bursting at the
seams. Hospitals now specialize in treatment of diabetes, chronic
respiratory diseases, cancer, cardiovascular problems, high blood
pressure, obesity, etc. These medical problems are termed as Non-
Communicable Diseases (NCDs). They are also called Lifestyle Diseases
as people with poor lifestyle tend to attract them. By poor lifestyle I
mean little or no exercise; consumption of fatty, processed or junk food;
sedentary jobs, tendency for stress, poor sleep patterns, bad posture,

etc. Diseases which are as a rusult of germs, bacteria or virus are termed
as Communicable Diseases (CDs). Our efforts for advancement of life,
become wealthy and relax, having fun all the time have resulted in shift
of disease burden from CDs to NCDs. Despite all the research and
advancement in allopathic treatments, most patients of lifestyle diseases
are doomed to a lifetime of medication without cure of the disease.
The diseases affecting mankind can be broadly classified as
Communicable Diseases (CDs), Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and
Injuries. WHO (World Health Organisation) and World Bank studies have
shown a definitive shift in Global Disease Burden form 1970 to 2008. The
projected disease burden in 2030 estimates major spurt in NCDs.
TABLE 1 - GLOBAL DISEASE BURDEN

2008 27 63 10
2030* 14 76 10

Life is becoming more competitive every year. This leads to stress in
billions of people. The pollution levels in air, water; poor food habits;
sedentary lifestyle; bad posture are all adding up to the growth of
lifestyle diseases. Despile billions of dollars spent on medical research
and new age hospitals, the problem is growing globally. Some Alternative
Treatments like homeopathy, ayurveda, chinese medicine, accupressure,
acupuncture, Sujog, etc. have shown good results in treatment of NCDs.
However, the spread and information of these treatments is smaller
compared to allopathic treatment. It is also to be noted that these are
all treatments and do not prevent development of NCDs.
To counter the multi-headed hydra monster of NCDs, we need a
Yoga Varta : June 2018 28
`moJdmVm©
system of life that can prevent the disease itself by making the body and
mind strong. Let us not dampen our spirits because Yoga developed and
practised over the ages, has a solution to our modern day health
problems of the 21st century. The power of Yoga as solution to our day
to day health problems should not be underestimated. Yoga not only
strengthers the body; it also increases our immunity and ensures good
mental health so that we do not fall prey to psycho-somatic diseases.
The only solution to prevent a host of medical problems that we have
enforced on ourselves is to practise Yoga. It is good not only for a healthy
body but also a healthy mind. Yoga is a mood enhancer and promotes
sound sleep. A sound sleep in itself is a promoter of good health. Some
of the major health benefits of Yoga are -
B Improved flexibility B Enhanced blood circulation B Lowered blood
pressure B Drop in pulse rate B Lowered respiratory rate B Builds muscle
strength B Protects the posture and spine B Better bone health
B Enhances mood B Helps to focus or concentrate B Improves the
balance B Maintains health of nervous system B Helps to make sleep
deeper B Gives lungs more power B Keeps premature aging at bay
B Increase core strength.
The benefits of yoga are not limited only to health. Yoga is the
practice of Asanas, Bandhas, Mudras, Kriyas, Relaxation Techniques,
Pranayam and Meditation and above all, Samadhi. However, even if we
do not consider Samadhi for day to day life even then yoga benefits us
in our growth of emotional and spiritual development. The cleansing
and health of our physical and mental systems are the central effects of
yoga. Each Asana in turn has local effects on our body parts or systems.
The asanas also have associated effects besides the local effects. Each
Asana has a host of benefits. Pranayam ensures that the cosmic energy
called Prana enters our system to give us higher energy levels and give
a positive thrust to our emotional development. The practice of
meditation is the start of the journey for spiritual development. If yoga
were a pill, it would be the most beneficial pill ever invented. It boosts
29 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
self-esteem, enhances mood, betters sleep quality, raises energy levels
and ensures good mental health.
As yoga gives a host of benefits, the question only remains as how
to make yoga a part of our day-to-day life. As the Chinese proverb goes -
"A thousand mile journey starts with a single step," so also we have to
start the journey of yoga with the first step of practising Asanas. As we
move ahead in the journey of yoga we need to learn the art of doing
Asanas the correct way by learning them from a well-known practitioner.
Asanas help balance the body and distribute strength evenly. Through
freeing up the outer body and controlling the Prana - the vital force of
inner body, yoga does wonders. Yoga is a wonderful do-it-yourself
medicine. Practising Asanas the correct way will benefit substantially.
We need to learn Bandhas and Mudras too. The Kriyas are very
important for cleansing our system that is polluted because of poor
lifestyle. The practice of Pranayam and Meditation is needed to elevate
our inner being to a higher level.
As yoga gives a host of benefits, it is important that we make it a part
of our daily life. It may need a good motivation to start yoga, but it is the
mental discipline that will ensure that it becomes a habit. Each individual
must take up a set of Asanas for daily practice. This set of Asanas should
be decided depending upon one's need and health issues. The most
important thing is to make yoga a daily practice and a lifelong habit.

PEARLS OF PRAISE
for 45th Summer Yoga Course conducted by YVN
at various places in Navi Mumbai
Compiled by Neha Kerure
(Yoga Teacher, YTTC, Vashi. Mob. : 9969596389)
45th Yoga Summer Course of Yoga Vidya Niketan was
conducted from 1st May to 31st May 2018. We are really
overwhelmed by tremendous response by yoga-lovers of Navi
Mumbai. The course was whole heartedly appreciated by one and
all. It gives us immense pleasure and pride to present here some of
the soulful responses of 45th Summer Course participants :
Dr. Vaibhav and Grishma Patankar from BARC, Mumbai considers
YVN as a temple of mental and physical health which provides a guiding
path towards the traditional ‘Yogic Sadhana’. Rajendra Solanki from
BARC has invested his time and poured his heart in expressing his views
regarding this summer course under the title ‘Discovering self through
Yoga’. The dilemma of whether to join the course or not was vanished by
the beautiful quote, ‘The best time to relax is when you don’t have time
for it’, he says. He got enrolled himself and enjoyed every bit of the
course in a divine ambiance from chanting beautiful prayers, discovering
a simple thought that even a ‘regulator’ is regulated, well planned and
well balanced curriculum, discovering and meeting himself, realizing his
body, mind and heart restrictions and releasing it by practicing CDR,
learning the sutra ‘Sahajta’ and silencing the mind by beautiful practice
of Sakshibhavana for purging unnecessary, non-productive and negative
deep routed thoughts. He thinks Yoga is not a ‘Work-out’ but it is actually
a wonderful ‘Work-in’. Dr. Rashmi Mohanty, Co-founder and Director
of Advent Chembio Pvt Ltd, from BARC, feels immensely privileged to
be a part of Yoga Summer Course - 2018. She adds, the course has
31 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
completely rejuvenated her physically and enriched her mentally and
vitally. She whole heartedly thanks the entire team of teachers who has
shown exemplary patience and spirit while imparting the training about
the ancient yogic techniques which are the basis of our glorious past and
which has been scientifically proven to impart us healthy and happy life.
She thinks, surely, the course must have ignited the passion for YOGA
among all the participants. Dr. Rajesh Kumar and Charu Vatsa, Radha
Raghavan, Sunitee Maurya, R. B. Solanki and other participants from
BARC felt delighted to join and to get benefitted by the well-planned,
meticulous, enriching, enlightening Summer Course. Ruchi Bhatt also
from BARC got impressed by different timings of the course at different
nodes to facilitate everyone to be a part of this excellent journey of
yoga. Ms. Madhulika Singh from Nerul says even being a humble
beginner she could feel the potential of Yoga within the short period of
one month. She has started feeling better, fitter and lighter. Jyoti and
Ravi Talreja from Nerul whole heartedly appreciate the entire summer
course by calling it not just a class but a True Experience. They are
happier to see their son Gaurish showing interest in yoga at such young
age. Basavlinge Gowda and Padmakar Mam from Nerul heartily
express their gratitude, appreciate and congratulate Shri Nimbalkar
Guruji and his team for doing a fantastic job of educating and teaching
yoga to residents of Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and trying to reach every
home by conducting classes at almost every nook and corner of the city.
They consider the course as a stepping stone towards healthy and happy
life. Geetha Nair from Seawood (W) praises the course by considering
it as the best yoga amongst all various courses she has attended till date.
Divya Prakash Singh also from Seawoods gives credit to Nimbalkar
Guruji and all other teachers for following ‘Yoga Karmasu Kaushalam’ by
their work towards humanity by exhibiting discipline in every aspect of
Summer Course. Anjali Nimbalkar, Vaishali Gajbhiye, Suoanoini Shetty,
Nandini Srinivas, Apeksha Pathak, Shreya Jain, Gitanjali Patil,
Prabhavati, Neeta Bedre and Ranjana, the entire women brigade from
Yoga Varta : June 2018 32
`moJdmVm©
Seawoods feel esteemed and thankful to YVN for encouraging and
inspiring them to practise yoga on daily basis. They experienced the
expanded awareness towards body and breath while practising asanas
and pranayamas. Yoga also helped them to get self confidence, peace of
mind and quality sleep. All of them were truly impressed by the team of
knowledgeable, approachable and enthusiastic teachers who used to
maintain lively atmosphere throughout the course which made them
learn with joyous mind. Vaibhavi Mahakalkar, Meena P.S., V. Kaushik
and Nikita from Kharghar think the course was very inspiring,
informative and motivating and say that ‘As Per Your Capacity’ is the key
word which makes one know his or her body limitations and the graded
approach helps to overcome those inabilities. Nakul Prasad Singh from
Kharghar expresses his feelings on the concluding day by saying, ‘‘A
delicious dish is finished leaving the tongue and stomach unsatisfied.’’
He, along with Vaishali Khandave, Santosh Shinde and others are
demanding for long duration course. Shirish Patil from Kharghar thinks
that the micro technicality in teaching, passion of teachers for making
participants to achieve maximum perfection was the hallmark of the
course. Naresh Jaisingh, Kunda Amitabh, Diptee Karatkar, Vikas
Parane and others from Kharghar feel proud to know about Guruji
Nimbalkar’s work in the field of Yoga, particularly for the commoners.
They are also amazed to see the dedication, commitment, precision,
patience, friendliness of trainee teachers. Pragya Vyas, Amol Kulkarni,
Ravi, Rashmi, Sachin Bagwe, Chahana Hegde, Pradyumn and Usha
Mehta from Kharghar appreciate the whole hearted efforts put in by all
dedicated teachers to make this summer course a successful one. Pragya
wants this course to be conducted frequently and not only in the month
of May so that no one can miss the wonderful, magical experience of
practising yoga. Amol feels yoga has made him know and love himself in
a better way. Rashmi finds herself a short of words to express the
experience. Kavita Anchan and Chitra Chinchpure from Kharghar are
very happy to complete this absolutely wonderful one month course.
33 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
They think during the course, the valuable information given, the
practical knowledge and the emphasis on physical parts is definitely the
biggest strength of the course. From Koperkhairane Sufala Mukherjee’s
biggest concern at the time of admission was whether the teacher who
will teach will be good or not. But on very first day, by seeing not only
1 but 4 teachers and their teaching skills, she got impressed and felt
lucky enough to have enrolled herself. Shitoshna from Koperkhairane
says, ‘‘Yoga is a must for making one’s life better…’’ and after joining
Summer Course, she feels like she has taken the first step in making her
life better. Devashis Nandan, Prabha Patel, Sheela Menon, Rintu
Barman from Koperkhairane feel that they all have developed a very
good habit of waking up early in the morning and follow a disciplined
routine of yogabhyasa. Mythli Ravi Iyer and Raghuram Shetty’s main
liking was ‘No Homework’, they were so very happy with teachers not
asking questions like, ‘have you practised at home?’ Mrugna Kokate,
one of the youngest yoga lovers from Vashi got amazed by the way of
teaching. At this young age, she has developed liking towards yoga and
she admits that she has fallen in love with Yoga Vidya Niketan and
wished to join Yoga Teachers’ Training Course when she becomes age-
wise eligible. Priti and Bhavan Mhavarkar from Vashi Gaon felt very
fortunate to get very good and well trained yoga teachers to learn yoga
which they both were searching since long. This one month course has
helped them get relieved from High BP, Sciatica pain, Arthritice and
back pain. Mrs. Shobha Nalavade, a retired Head Mistress from
Sanpada is wholeheartedly praising the entire summer course for
everything from discipline to visiting teachers’ small but encouraging
and motivating speeches. Kavita Rajput from Sanpada pours her heart
in praising the wonderful execution of entire Summer Course by calling
it as a magical experience. Being a writer and also a painter, she had
developed joint pain and back pain and swelling eyes. By regularly
attending summer course, she has overcome it and also with Omkar
Sadhana she feels improved quality of her voice while singing. Sarika

Hemrajani says that being a teacher by profession, her idea of enjoying
vacation was sleeping for long hours. But this summer course has helped
her to change this idea and she enjoyed getting up early in the morning
to meet her extended new, loving and warm family of yoga teachers and
attending the classes without fail. Nakul Gandhi from Vashi thinks that
this Summer Course was a great family retreat for all three of them who
had enrolled for the course. He feels very grateful for being associated
with YVN and he believes this journey would continue for much longer
time. Mr. P. P. Palshetkar, Veena Khera from Vashi consider themselves
fortunate enough to get enrolled for this course and finding new
happiness in their lives. Shishupal Sarbat from Airoli, first and
foremost, thanks all YVNites for giving time, energy and attention
throughout the month. He says, it was an interesting course where you
learn how to handle students while practising yogabhyasa. He feels he is
stronger and happier than ever before. Prakash Pujary, Nitesh Shah,
Pralayakumar Mitra, Jayalaxmi, Aishwarya, all from Airoli want to
recommend this course to everyone who are interested in learning yoga
basics in a proper way. They feel positive energy, positive aura and vibes
after this course. And they all are eager to join 46th Summer course too.
Mrs. Leena Palav, Airoli, is practicing yoga since last 10 years but this
was her best experience of practising yoga with well-trained yoga
teachers from YVN. She specially got impressed by the very easily taught
techniques of various pranayamas and personal attention given during
the course. Ms. Veena from Airoli expresses her heartfelt thanks to
entire team of YVN for superbly conducting Summer Course. She
specially likes the designing of the course, the way it is executed, the
explanation of yogic practices with meaning of the name of the practice,
proper demonstration, probable mistakes, and correction of the
mistakes, contraindication, benefits and the step-by- step instructions
given to the participants to make them perform as per capacity. Mr.
Upendra Kumar from Airoli states that it was difficult for him to cope-
up with Mumbai Life after shifting from Pune. After attending this
35 Yoga Varta : June 2018
`moJdmVm©
summer course, he is now able to easily manage everything and can find
out time to practise yoga. He also appeals all newly trained yoga
teachers to do something for middle class people to help them maintain
their health in a yogic way with minimum expenditure, instead of

PEARLS OF PRAISEfor Summer Yoga Course conducted at
various places in Mumbai
The youngest participant (i.e. 12 years of age) - Nikhil H. Patankar
from Gyansagar, Borivali (West) says, ‘‘My experience of Yoga Vidya
Niketan has been very good. The Graded Yogic Courses have been
excellently designed and systematically taught. I liked the teaching skills
of all the teachers. My favourite Asana has been Dhanurasana and I love
doing Yoga everyday.’’ Nilima Iyer says, ‘‘The course content was precise
and interesting. We were given enough time to practise what was taught
everyday. I have made so may gains in strength, flexibility and
knowledge. Modhani says, ‘‘I have already started feeling the difference
in my body by regularly doing yoga here and my mind also feels more
peaceful. My back-ache also got reduced. My overall experience has
been excellent and It was really worth joining the one month's yoga
summer course.’’ Mrs. Smitha V. Gdndhi says, ‘‘I have experienced this
way of doing yog for the first time. It was lovely experience indeed. I

slowly picked up pace with the Asanas and learned to remain in them
with Pranadharana. I learned to do Asanas without giving jerk to the
body. I did not realise how soon one month has passed away. Very good
experience indeed! I liked the sysetematic way in which everything was
organised daily. Teachers reaching before time, organizing everything,
making us feel comfortable and always encouraging and motivating us
to do all the Yogic practices.’’ Bhavana Patel says, ‘‘It was an awesome
experience. Learnt a lot in this one month of practice. The experience of
learning new asanas and lot of new techniques involved in the asanas
was really excellent.’’ Suhas Mane says, ‘‘To teach all the nuances and
finer points of this great Indian culture of Rishis & Yogis in one month
was a very challening order, but hats-off to Yoga Vidya Niketan’s Teachers
for having done a great job.’’ Sai Rege says, ‘‘That way, I have been
practising yoga since last 5-6 years. However, whatever I have learnt in
last 1 month is totally differeent. I learnt the technicality of each and
every Asana better in this course. I reaslised yoga is more for mind than
for body. The bi-product is fitness of your physical body. Visits of senior
teachers were very helpful. Learnt a lot from them. Importantly realised
the amont of dedication all of them have towards yoga and also towards
educating all in that field. I must say I got really enlightered by this one
month course. I shall definitely continue to practise and achieve further
fineness in all Yogic practices.’’ Heena Soni says, ‘‘One month of 45th
Yoga Summer Course has been full of experiences, learnings, knowledge
& fun for beginners like us. This course was very helpful in all senses like
learning asanas and other yogic practices with their benefits for the body
and mind. The senior teachers/trainers were true inspiration to each
one of us, specially the youth. Their efforts of coming to the centre and
giving guidance with their own examples which is what makes learning
yoga so special about. Being so senior, their enthusiasm and spark is
what drives us, motivates us to take yoga seriously.’’ Rajshree Shah,
Abhishek Shah says, ‘‘The experience has been wonderfull. This course
is for everyone - young and old. The knowledge that we've gained will be
useful for the rest of our lives. I will definitely recommend this course to

friends & family. A big Thank You to Yoga Vidya Niketan and its
Teachers!’’ Nikhil Gore & Dr. Mugdha Gore says, ‘‘Yoga Vidya Niketan's
Summer Yoga Course has been a good motivation part of life. Initially, I
was not certain whether I will be able to complete this course on daily
basis. But it was a simplicity of this course designed by Padmashri S. P.
Nimbalkar Guruji and excellent teaching which enabled me to complete
it successfully. The sylabus has been designed in such a proficient way
that at the end of the month, a beginner like me has managed to
connect, learn & perform the Asanas and other Yogic practices.’’

Dr. Varsha Rele says, ‘‘It was a great experience. I had tried to learn
this ancient science many times in the past, but the way it was explained
in this course was a class apart. A lot of misconceptions got cleared and
a new understanding was added. Overall, it was a wonderful
experience!’’ Mr. Yogesh C. Shah says, ‘‘I liked the Summer Course
sessions very much. The course has been quite interesting where all the
major asanas were covered and where we are taught to do all the asanas

with slow, steady and rhythmic movements. I reaslised after joining this
session that we can maintain the final position of any asana for long. I
like Pranadharana a lot. it's an excellent technique to bring the mind
under control and increase our concentration.’’ Ajay Kumar S. Shah and
Daksha A. Shah says, ‘‘ We were thinking to join yoga classes since last
10 years but we got the opportunity to join the yoga class in this summer
vacation. After this yoga training, we feel that this is one of the best
decisions of our life. We used to go for morning walk for one hours for
last so many years but energy we feel in yoga is very high compared to
morning walk. We thank all our teachers for making such a wonderful
change in our lives.’’ Vinita D’costa says, ‘‘This course has given me a
renewed confidence, energy, mental relaxation and high spirits. I feel
this is the best yoga coaching which evolves you physically and mentally.
Thanks to all the teachers who were very co-operative and ever-smiling.’’
