Lunch Time All students, Kindergarten to Grade 8, are to remain on the school grounds during the school day unless they have permission on occasion from parents or a teacher to leave the grounds. At lunch time, K – 4 students residing less than 0.6 KMs from

school, and Grades 5 to 8 students residing less than 1.6 KMs from school, may go home for lunch. Transported students need a note from their parents to leave the school grounds and if they do have permission to leave the school grounds, they

must be accompanied by an adult. Regularly transported students who come to school by bicycle in the Fall and Spring are

News from the gym

March was another busy month at ESNI with many different ac-

tivities and opportunities for students to get involved in their

school community.

Congratulations to the grade 7/8 boys basketball team on a great

season. They made it all the way to the B side finals eventually

losing in a very close and hard-fought game. This was a very

young team, so we are excited for what they can do next year!

On Sunday March 5th a group of 25-30 ESNI community members includ-

ing students, parents, staff went ice fishing in Grand Marais MB. The

weather cooperated and everyone had a great time!

Spring means prep for Badminton, Softball and

Track & Field seasons at school. The divisional SRAA

badminton championships will be held at the U of M

on Thursday May 4th. Teams will be made and a pre-

paratory tournament will be held at CSNC in April.

Stay tuned for more updates or visit the school Phys

Ed & Health website for more details.

This month we also ran a floor hockey tournament at lunch

hour. A total of 35 grade 5-8 students participated. The win-

ning team was the

This year’s musical “The Little Mermaid” was a great success! This production was a great chance to

improve our musical abilities and explore our talents.

The cast consisted of a number of grade 5-8 students. Six students were part of the Stage Crew.

Their job was to move props around, on and off the stage in between the scenes. Two students were

the technicians. Their job was to control the lights and sound effects that really brought the musical

to life. The majority of the costumes were borrowed from the Collegiate. Some were ordered from

Amazon and the students participating brought some in also. We also had four students who created

the props that really set the scene.

Practices for this musical took part almost every day during our lunch hour. They could get intense at

times, but overall they were all super fun. We had one Saturday practice on March 18th from 9:00am

to noon. This practice was probably the most challenging but most productive.

Performances took place on March 21st and 22nd at 1:30pm and 7pm. There were also dress rehears-

als on both of these days at 9:30am for other students in the school to come and watch. All four of

these performances were fantastic! Both casts had a blast.

We liked being around other people who enjoyed taking part in this musical as much as we did. It was a

great experience to get to know other students and make new friends with those who love music as

much as we do. Taking part in shows like these are very beneficial. Doing things like this can help with

all sorts of things. It builds self-confidence and can help shy people come more out of their shell.

Overall, everyone had an amazing time putting on this show.

Roots of Empathy Today baby Noah turned twice and almost cried. He now sits by him-

self. He does not talk but does make sounds. He holds toys. Both his

parents brought him to visit us. This month, safety was the theme. Noah’s parents say that

they always supervise him. They have a baby gate but it’s mostly to keep his big sister safe

because she walks around a lot! We learned that it is important to keep the bedrooms, the

backyard, the laundry room, the kitchen and the living room safe areas for babies. Noah now

weighs 18.5 lbs and is 27” tall. (Erica, Yousif, Bella)

Earth Day is recognized each year on April 22 and is celebrated to bring awareness and

promote social responsibility in our students about the environment. The choices we make

over the next few years have a dramatic impact on the future of our planet.

As part of our school’s effort to bring awareness to the environment we will be picking up

garbage around the school yard as well as other activities. Also students and staff are

asked to bring a “litterless lunch” on - Friday, April 21st.

The goal is to help the school decrease the amount of garbage produced and to educate the

staff, students and parents about waste reduction. School lunches are a major source of

waste. The average student’s lunch generates a total of 30 kg (66 lbs.) of waste per school

year, and an average elementary school generates 8,500 kg (18,700 lbs.) of waste per year.

With your assistance, we can make a great contribution to reducing waste, every day.

Please help your child pack a litterless lunch on Friday, April 21st. If your child loses things

easily, make sure all your items are labelled. This will help them to be returned to their

rightful owner!
