Biography
With Carl Henry, Harold Ockenga and Harold Lindsell, Wilbur Moorehead Smith (1894-1976)
was a founding faculty member of Fuller Theological Seminary and contributed his own 16,000
volume library as the foundation for the Seminary's collection.
Born in Chicago into a family which attended Moody Memorial Church, as a youth Smith had
frequent contact with some of the great names of Evangelical Christianity of the early 20th
century, among them R. A. Torrey, Billy Sunday, and A. C. Dixon. Wilbur Smith was a
graduate of Moody Bible Institute in 1914, of Wooster College in 1917 and received his D.D. at
Evangelical Theological College, Dallas, Texas in 1932. He was ordained to the Presbyterian
ministry in 1922 and pastored four churches in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania from 1918
until 1937 when he joined the faculty of Moody Bible Institute. From 1934 to 1972 he edited
Peloubet's Select Notes on The International Sunday School Lessons. He also served as an editor
of the New Scofield Reference Bible. His books include The Time Periods in Prophecy, 1935,
How to Study the Bible for the Enrichment of the Spiritual Life, 1936, The Glorious Revival
Under King Hezekiah, 1937, Profitable Bible Study, 1939, The Supernaturalness of Christ, 1940,
The Gospel of Mark for Men in Service, 1944, Therefore Stand, 1945, a bibliography for the
study of D.L. Moody, 1946, This Atomic Age and the Word of God, 1947, A Voice for God: the
Life of Charles E. Fuller, 1949, The Approaching World Crisis, 1950, Chats from a Minister’s
Library, 1951, William H. Houghton: A Watchman on the Wall, 1951, The Word of God and the
Life of Holiness, 1952, Egypt in Biblical Prophecy, 1957, A Treasury of Books for Bible Study,
1960, Great Sermons on the Birth of Christ, 1963, Great Sermons on the Death of Christ, 1964,
Great Sermons on the Resurrection of Christ, 1965, The Biblical Doctrine of Heaven, 1967, The
Israeli/Arab Conflict and the Bible, 1967, The Best of D.L. Moody, 1971, and his autobiography,
Before I Forget, 1971.
In 1947 Wilbur Smith left Moody Bible Institute in order to become one of the founding
professors of Fuller Theological Seminary where he taught Bible until his resignation in 1963.
He then taught one semester each year at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1963-1971), while
retaining his home in San Marino, California, his office/library on Fuller’s campus, and his
membership at Lake Avenue Congregational Church in Pasadena where he taught an adult
Sunday School class of 200, Koinonia. He also taught Bible classes at the Church of the Open
Door in Los Angeles, prepared eight minute meditations for their nightly radio program and
accepted speaking engagements for Keswick holiness and prophecy conferences.
In 1947 he left Moody in order to become one of the founding professors of Fuller Theological
Seminary where he taught Bible until his resignation in 1963 over issues of pedagogy and
biblical hermeneutics. He taught at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School until his retirement.
After his retirement he returned to Pasadena where an office was provided in the Fuller
Theological Seminary Library, from which he was involved in Seminary life.
