Miriam Frances Abety called the meeting to order.

2. Welcome

Julie Alexander, Vice Provost, Academic Affairs asked CASSC members to join her in welcoming Dr. John

Wensveen, new Vice Provost for Academic Schools. Dr. Wensveen comes to MDC from Purdue University,

where he served as Head of the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology. He will be overseeing all

School Deans.

3. Comments by Vice Provost for Academic Affairs

CASSC Membership –

Vice Provost Alexander announced that CASSC membership will be adjusted in the Fall to include new Vice

Provost for Academic Schools.

Legislative Matters –

• Budget –

The budget for Florida College System (FCS) was reduced quite drastically.

• Postsecondary Education (SB 374) –

Senate Bill 374 was vetoed by Governor Rick Scott. Bill was meant to modify;

• Performance Funding Methodology

• Governance structure to oversee the State Board of Community College (SBCC) and

• Place a cap on baccalaureate programs within the Florida Community College System (FCCS)

Associate Dean John Adkins, introduced Cynthia Okoe, School of Business Chair, InterAmerican Campus,

who presented the State Mandate to sunset two (2) CTCs – Real Estate Sales Agent and Real Estate Broker,

along with all five (5) associated courses. These courses are not associated to any other program(s) offered at

the College. Programs are no longer viable as there have not been students who have declared these certificates

as their primary objectives since 2007.

6. School of Justice, Public Safety and Law Studies

School Dean Raimundo Socorro, introduced Anselm Knights, School of Engineering, Technology & Design

Chair, North Campus, who presented the new proposed AS in Computer Crime Investigation and CCC in

Digital Forensics. The development of these programs, is a collaboration between the School of Justice, Public

Safety, and Law Studies and the School of Engineering, Technology & Design. The AS is an interdisciplinary

degree which prepares our students to seemingly transfer into either the BAS in Public Safety or the BS in

Information Systems Technology. The AS and CCC address the needs of an industry that is rapidly growing

(over 25% job growth expected in workforce region 23), and the training needs of local and federal law

enforcement in Cyber Security. The new proposed CCC in Digital Forensics is made up of three (3) new

computer courses, and four (4) existing criminal justice courses. The CCC in Digital Forensics stacks into the

AS in Computer Crime Investigation.

Course Description: This is an introductory electronic security course for students who are studying

cybersecurity, electronics or computer engineering technologies. The student will study information and

communication security in computer systems and networks. Both information flow and information

integrity policies will be considered. Topics will include authentication, protection, security models,

cryptography, applications, and public policy, along with case studies. Prerequisite: COP2270,

CET2369C (2 hr. lecture 4 hr. lab)

Course Description: This is an introductory digital forensics course for students who are studying

cybersecurity, electronics or computer engineering technologies. In this course, students will learn the

setup and use of an investigator’s laboratory, how to perform data acquisition, web forensics, email

forensics, mobile forensics, network analysis, and file recovery. Prerequisite: CET2664C, COP2270

School Dean Antonio Delgado, introduced Anselm Knights, School of Engineering, Technology & Design

Chair, North Campus, who presented three (3) new proposed Cyber Security courses which are industry and

vendor specific. These courses will prepare students who are interested in this field for various industry

certifications, obtain jobs in companies that use cyber security software, and will count as electives for the BS

in Information Systems Technology.

CTS2670 Check Point Security Administration 4 1, 2, 3,5,6,7, Ctr. August 2017

Course Description: This course, designed for students specializing in network security, prepares

students for the Check Point Certified Security Administrator (CCSA) certification exam. Students will

learn how to install security gateways; configure rules on servers; create a rule base; assign user

permissions; schedule backups and upgrades; monitor and troubleshoot common network traffic.

Prerequisite: CTS1134, CTS1120) (3 hr. lecture 2 hr. lab)

Curriculum Action Rationale: New course designed to meet industry demand and to meet vendor

certification.

Proposed Fee: $63.00

Rationale/Justification: New course requires laboratory personnel and equipment. Projected

enrollment of 24 students per section is based on historically observed enrollment trend for a comparable

program. Fees are calculated based on 6 sections of 24 students for courses CTS2670, CTS2671,

CTS2316. All 3 courses will be offered once per major semester on two different campuses = 6 sections

in total.

CTS2671 Check Point Security Engineering 4 1, 2, 3,5,6,7, Ctr. August 2017

Course Description: This course, for students specializing in network security, prepares students for the

Check Point Certified Security Expert (CCSE) certification examination. Students learn how to configure,

build, modify, deploy and troubleshoot a secure network utilizing firewall technologies. Topics include

clustering, software acceleration, advanced VPN concepts and implementation, and monitoring and

reporting tools. Prerequisite: CTS1120, CTS1134, CTS2670 (3 hr. lecture 2 hr. lab)

Students will learn how to master core security concepts, secure network infrastructure, manage secure

access, recognize threats and vulnerabilities, and mitigate security threats. The course prepares students

School Dean Antonio Delgado, introduced Professor Richard Rose, School of Engineering, Technology &

Design, Kendall Campus, who presented program modifications to the AS in Music Business and tracks. The

Music Business discipline is proposing the removal of COP2822 Web Page Design and Programming from

the program only, and replace with CTS1800 Introduction to Web Page Development. COP2822 is no longer

viable as technologies used in the Music Business industry have changed. Therefore, the course is obsolete

and does not serve our students’ degree requirements and needs. CTS1800 is more in alignment with the

software currently used in the industry. By adding course CTS1800 to the AS in Music Business, will eliminate

the need to prepare substitutions, and the students’ degree requirements will be met with the completion of the

course.

School of Health Sciences Chair, Donna Fishkin, Medical Campus, introduced Captain Frank Gonzalez,

Emergency Medical Services and Chief Karls Paul-Noel, School of Justice, Public Safety, and Law Studies

who presented the proposed new CTC in Fire Fighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). This certificate

is a collaboration of the School of Justice, Public Safety, and Law Studies and the School of Health Sciences.

The proposed CTC will be financial aid eligible. By combining both programs, students will be certified as

fire fighter and EMT, making them more qualified when seeking employment.

Course Description: The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course prepares students to provide

pre-hospital assessment and care for patients of all ages with a variety of medical conditions and traumatic

injuries. Areas of study include an introduction to emergency medical services systems, roles and

responsibilities of EMTS, anatomy and physiology, medical emergencies, trauma, special considerations

for working in the pre-hospital setting, and providing patient transportation.

10. Announcements

Thank You’s and August Meeting

Outgoing CASSC Chair Miriam Frances Abety, thanked outgoing members for their participation and

willingness to serve on College CASSC. She also reminded returning College CASSC members that there

was no meeting in August. The next College CASSC meeting will be on September 12, 2017, 2:00 p.m.,

Room 2106 at the Wolfson Campus. Also, she introduced Professor Diego Tibaquira, 2017 Endowed Teaching

Chair receipient, who will transition from faculty represtantative to CASSC Chair (2017-2018). She wished

everyone a healthy and creative summer.
