CBI QUOTES

“It’s huge, really big for us...Obviously, in the postseason, this group that we’ve had the last two years, if you add it up, we’re (10-0) right now in the postseason.”-- VCU Head Coach, Shaka Smart, 2010 CBI Champion and 2011 Final Four Participant when asked about using the CBI experience as a springboard to NCAA Tournament success.

“There’s been a lot said about VCU and how it benefited them. Missouri State won a championship last year, and it benefited them this year. You’re playing basketball when no one else is playing. You’re practice when no one else is practicing.”-- Creighton Head Coach, Greg McDermott

“It’s great to finish our the [tournament with a victory]... The kids wanted to do more this year. They didn’t feel they had done what they set out to do.”-- Pittsburgh Head Coach, Jamie Dixon

“I think it’s just great to play in the posteason, regardless of what tournament it is, just having a chance to play, taking advantage of it. Now we’re down to no more chances to even play in a Duck uniform.”-- Oregon Senior, Joevan Catron

“This tournament is attracting a lot more prestigious teams as it gets older.”-- Oregon State Head Coach, Craig Robinson

“I believe anytime you have the opportunity to play in postseason that’s a tribute to the type of successful season you’ve had and the respect that our program has gained on a national level.”-- Morehead State Head Coach, Donnie Tyndall

“This is priceless for us. The tournament...it is the best thing going. We (Tulsa and Bradley) would have both been in the NIT anyway had that not changed and this is better because we’ve been able to play on home courts...we’ve been able to capture something that myself and (athletic director) Bubba (Cunningham) could never do with a marketing plan, so it’s awesome.”-- Tulsa Head Coach, Doug Wojcik, after winning the 2008 CBI Championship

“The crowd was alive... some sort of living, breathing entity with ear shattering, rock concert, airplane noise. It began to grow as it formed at 3p.m. to await the chance to get into the building. It flowed down the concourse, filling up the seats like lava flowing out of a volcano. It rocked and rolled and roared.”- From the El Paso Times on Game 2 of the 2009 CBI Championship Series at UTEP

“We looked at it like we wanted to keep getting better...We wanted to finish on a high note. We wanted to get guys experience. We have to keep working for next year, keep preparing for next year to become better players.-- Pittsburgh Junior, Tray Woodall

ABOUT THE EVENT

The College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen was created in 2007 and the inaugural tournament occured following the conclusion of the 2007-2008 men’s college basketball regular season. The CBI provides a meaningful opportunity for teams that deserve a postseason experience. Sixteen teams compete in this four-year- old postseason event, hosted at on-campus arenas throughout the country.

The CBI is a single-elimination tournament up until the Championship Series, which is a best-of-three series. The event features eight first round games, four quarterfinal round games, a semifinal round, and then Championship Series.

The goal of the brackets is to create a competitive balance within each bracket and to minimize missed class time. The final process takes place after the NCAA Tournament field is announced.

Fans rush the court following Game 3 of the Championship Series at Tulsa during the Inaugural CBI in 2008 (above left) and after Game 3 of the Championship Series at Oregon

during the 2011 CBI presented by Zebra Pen.

Teams are invited based upon performance during their conference and non-conference schedules, as well as how well the team is playing at the end of the regular season.

UTEP’s Don Haskins Arena sold out for Games 2 and 3 of the 2009 Championship Series.

It began to grow as it formed at 3 p.m. to await the chance to get into the building. It fl owed down the concourse, fi lling up the seats like lava fl owing out of a volcano. It rocked and rolled and roared.”

Mitch Henderson is heading back to Indiana, but more than a trip down memory lane, the Princeton University men’s basketball head coach is looking forward to the chance to extend the season. ”We’re really happy to be playing,” said Henderson, whose Tigers play at Evansville 8 p.m. tonight in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen. “We were hopeful for an NIT bid. We knew we were a longshot. We thought we’d have the chance to play in the postseason.” The Tigers closed the regular season last Tuesday with a 62-52 win over the University of Pennsylvania, another CBI tournament invite. The Tigers will be heading back to the state of Indiana, where they won a second-round CBI game over IUPUI in 2010. Henderson spent his youth in Indiana, and can remember going to Evansville as a basketball fan, and now he goes as a coach. ”It’s strange,” Henderson said. “When I was a really young kid, my older brother and I would travel from our home in Vincennes, and we went to all the regional high school games. When there was one state tournament in Indiana, the championship was in the old Evansville gym.” Henderson might never have left Indiana, but coming out of Culver Academies as a promising athlete in three sports, he didn’t get any Division I basketball offers, not from every Indian schoolboy’s dream school, Indiana University, and not from bigger-conference schools Notre Dame or Purdue, or even Butler or Valparaiso. Not even IUPUI. ”Not even the smallest school possible,” Henderson said. “If there was a school in state, it was always IU. But I found the right place.” Henderson came to Princeton and was a part of some of the most storied teams in program history. He enjoyed his time as a player at tournament time, particularly when the Tigers topped defending national champion UCLA in 1996. ”I think it’s really important to play basketball in March,” Henderson said. “We have kind of a veteran team. The importance of preparing for a one and done game, and a national tournament game, that’s important. You’re doing something important for each other and for your university, you’re representing your school.” From Vincennes, the Henderson’s family would have had to travel through Princeton, Ind., on the way to Evansville. Now, Princeton must go through Evansville to try to earn a shot at the Pittsburgh-Wofford winner and a third-straight 20-win season. ”Coach (Marty) Simmons is doing a good job,” Henderson said of Evansville, who is 16-15 overall and 9-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference. “They’re tough. It’s a good conference. We know we have a challenge ahead of us.” The Tigers were scrambling Sunday night after receiving their invite to figure out travel arrangements, but they have been preparing to play another game since topping Penn in the regular-season finale. ”We knew we were likely going to play,” Henderson said. “We had some practices. We took some days off. We’ll go (Monday) and get on a plane.”

Princeton has played well down the stretch, and comes into the CBI a more confident team. They have won eight of their last nine games. ”We’re just way more balanced,” Henderson said. “We have a lot of the pieces. We’re big. We can shoot the ball. We share the ball nicely. They’re making each other better. Because can score in a lot of ways and do defend, I think we’re a difficult matchup.” Ian Hummer leads the team with averages of 16.1 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. Douglas Davis averages 13.0 points per game. T.J. Bray has a team-high 110 assists. In the win over Hummer, it was Hummer, Davis and Saunders that combined for 40 of Princeton’s 62 points, and Henderson sees that as one of the biggest things going for it tonight. ”Veteran play,” Henderson said. “Between Pat, Doug and Ian, we’ve been getting really balanced play from those guys these last five or six games.” Princeton watched with interest the conference tournaments around the country to try to figure out where they’d end up. The Tigers are one of four Ivy teams in the postseason this year. Yale was extended a bid to the CIT. The Tigers have a win over ACC tournament champion Florida State, and Ivy League champion Harvard, which is a No. 12 seed vs. No. 5 seed Vanderbilt in the NCAA tournament. ”You always root for the league,” Henderson said. “Even when I was a player here, we had a good RPI, and we didn’t get a good seed, so I understand Harvard getting a 12 seed. With a 35 RPI, I’m not sure where that’s coming from. We’d like to see the league do well.” Starting with themselves tonight.

Delaware Men’s Basketball to face Butler Wednesday in First Round of CBI Posted: Tuesday, March 13, 2012 11:36 am

PRINCETON, N.J. -- The University of Delaware men’s basketball team has been selected to

participate in the fifth annual 2012 College Basketball Invitational presented by Zebra Pen and

will travel to two-time national finalist Butler for a first round game on Wednesday at 8 p.m.

Eastern at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

The game, the second ever meeting between the Blue Hens and Bulldogs, will be televised live on

HDNet. The winner of the Delaware-Butler game will take on the winner of the Quinnipiac-Penn

game in the quarterfinals on Monday, March 19.

Delaware finished its regular season with an 18-13 record, and posted a nine-game winning streak

until falling to Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals. The

Blue Hens finished fifth in the CAA regular season standings while posting their highest win total

since the 2000-01 season.

Delaware will be making its sixth ever appearance in a postseason tournament and its first since

falling to Villanova in the 2000 NIT.

The Blue Hens are led by guard Devon Saddler, who averages a team-high 19.1 points and

became the first sophomore in school history to surpass the 1,000-point mark during the ODU contest. Jamelle Hagins, UD’s career leader in blocked shots, ranks third in the nation with 11.3

rebounds per game while chipping in 12.6 points per contest. Saddler and Hagins were each

named second team All-CAA while freshman Jarvis Threatt, who contributes 10.1 points per

outing, was a CAA All-Rookie Team selection.

Butler, which made back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I national championship

game during the past two years, went 20-14 this season while posting its seventh consecutive 20-

win season. The Bulldogs finished in a tie for third place in the Horizon League standings before

falling at top-seeded Valparaiso in the conference tournament semifinals.

The only other meeting between Delaware and Butler came on November 17, 2001 at the BP Top

of the World Classic at Fairbanks, Alaska, when the Bulldogs posted a 76-59 victory over the

Blue Hens.

The CBI presented by Zebra Pen, entering its fifth year, consists of 16 teams. Three of the eight

first round games will be played on Tuesday, March 13, with the remaining five first round

contests scheduled for Wednesday. The quarterfinal round will be held on Monday, March 19,

with the semifinals set for Wednesday, March 21. A unique feature of the CBI is its best-of-three

championship series, which begins on Monday March 26. All games in the CBI presented by

Zebra Pen are played on campus sites.

The three first round games on Tuesday feature Princeton at Evansville, Milwaukee at TCU, and

Washington State at San Francisco. Wednesday’s games feature Delaware at Butler, Quinnipiac at

Penn, Wofford at Pittsburgh, Western Illinois at Oregon State, and North Dakota State at

Wyoming. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed.

for not quitting and cutting it to nine, but we just couldn’t get over the hump. Butler has a great

club, and Brad (Stevens) does an outstanding job.”

“They’re a tough defensive team, and they did a good job tracking Kyle (Anderson) and didn’t

allow Devon (Saddler) many good looks. Jarvis (Threatt) has the ability to pressure the defense,

especially in the open court. He’s a tremendous talent who’s just going to keep getting better.”

Neither team could get much going offensively during the first 12 minutes, and a free throw by

Kelvin McNeil tied the game at 15-15 with 7:41 on the clock. However Butler then went on 8-0

run, including two three-pointers by Stigall, to take a 23-15 lead and force a UD timeout with 5:12

to play.

The Bulldogs’ lead grew to 10 following a Smith three-pointer, and after Delaware answered with

four free throws, Khyle Marshall hit a pair from the line to give Butler a 31-23 halftime lead.

Delaware shot just 32 percent in the opening half and converted only three field goals over the

final 14:50 of the period, all by Threatt. The Blue Hens stayed in the game by holding the

Bulldogs to just 37 percent shooting, although Butler did connect on five of its 10 three-point

attempts.

The Bulldogs then scored the first nine points of the second half, including the first five by

Hopkins, to extend the margin to 40-23 on a Kameron Woods jumper with 15:36 to play.

Threatt scored the Blue Hens’ first second half basket with a steal and dunk at the 14:30 mark, and

added two more buckets to pull Delaware within 43-29 with 11:38 to play. Brinkley then

converted a jumphook inside, while Threatt followed with a steal and a monster one-handed jam

to make it a 10-point game and force a Butler timeout with 11:01 remaining.

The Blue Hens got as close as nine following a Saddler three-point play and it was still a 10-point

game at 48-38 with 9:45 to go, but the Bulldogs responded with five straight points to go back up

15 on a Woods putback.

Delaware scored the next three points, but Butler answered with five more in a row and led by at

least 15 the rest of the way.

The loss caps a successful season for the Blue Hens, who won nine consecutive games before

falling to Old Dominion in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinals. Delaware

loses reserves Hakim McCullar and Samer Madarani to graduation but returns the rest of the

squad, in addition to redshirts Carl Baptiste and Marvin King-Davis, for what promises to be an

exciting 2012-13 season.

Cougs advance to CBI semi's

Published On: Mar 19 2012 11:53:41 PM PDT PULLMAN, Wash. -

Brock Motum scored 25 and Abe Lodwick added a career-high 16 points as Washington State University men’s basketball defeated Wyoming, 61-41, Monday in the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) presented by Zebra Pen, at Beasley Coliseum.

Washington State improves to 17-16 on the season, while Wyoming ends its season at 21-12. The Cougars will travel to Corvallis, Ore., to take on Oregon State (21-14) for the fourth time this season in the CBI presented by Zebra Penn Semifinal Round at 7 p.m. PT Wednesday. In the other semifinal game, Pittsburgh (19-16) will travel to Indianapolis, Ind., to take on Butler (22-14) Wednesday. The winners will meet in a best-of-three series beginning next Monday.

Motum led all scorers with 25 points on 9-for-16 shooting from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line, while adding seven rebounds. Lodwick added seven rebounds as well to his career-high 16 points. The redshirt senior tied his career high with four made 3-pointers and was 6-for-9 from the field. He also tied his season high with four assists.

Leonard Washington led the Cowboys with 14 points, while Adam Waddell also contributed 13 points. Larry Nance, Jr. was ejected after picking up two technical fouls back-to-back in the second half. He finished with just two points and four rebounds.

The defensive battle got off to a slow start, with the first points coming Abe Lodwick at the 17:55 mark in the first half. The Cougars led by as many as 10 points with 1:30 to go in the first half, 26-16, but the Cowboys used a 5-0 run to end the half and cut WSU’s lead to five after the first 20 minutes of action.

The slow pace continued in the beginning of the second half, as WSU extended its lead to 34-23 at the 16-minute mark, opening the half with an 8-2 run. With WSU’s lead at nine, Mike Ladd hit 3-of-4 free throws and Motum added two to extend the lead to 39-25 with 10:26 to go in the game.

Wyoming put together a run of its own to cut the lead to 10, 47-37, with 5:58 to go in the game, capped by a 3-pointer by Francisco Cruz. Just as it appeared the Cowboys had the momentum, Nance, Jr. was called for a foul on Motum when the two went for a rebound, and followed it up with back-to-back technical fouls after reacting to the call. WSU’s Reggie Moore made three of his four free throw attempts and Motum made his two to give WSU a 15-point lead, 52-37.

The Cougars continued to build to their lead, reaching their largest point differential of 20 points at the 20 second mark on a layup by Dexter Kernich-Drew. WSU held on to that lead, winning 61-41.

Washington State and Oregon State will meet for the fourth time this season, as WSU holds the 2-1 advantage, winning both regular season games, while the Beavers knocked the Cougars out of the Pac-12 Tournament with a first-round victory. The game, played at 7 p.m. at Gill Coliseum will be televised on HDNet.
