COLLINGSWOOD PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
July 29, 2018 10th Sunday after Pentecost
ASSEMBLE IN GOD’S NAME
Morning Reflection
"I think also of something George often replies when I become too theoretical, when I ask with too much vehemence why people work jobs they hate, why so
many people earn their living by deforesting, or mining, or working other obviously destructive jobs:
Sixty days he says.
That's how long it takes before people begin to die of starvation.
Sixty days
Dave can't quit his job because in sixty days his children will die. No longer
can Dave kill and eat Eskimo curlews from a flock that one day may have passed directly over a spot where he now lives. No longer do most of us--myself included--have the skills to raise or gather our own food. We are
members of only the third or fourth generation in the history of humankind who have not known how to build our own shelters. I say I want a revolu-tion, and that I want to "shut down the machine," but until we find a new equilibrium, how are we going to eat? Sixty days: those two short words, those two altogether too short months, are a primary reason most of us do
not rebel. We still have too much to lose."
~Derrick Jensen, A Language Older Than Words
(Please stand for items marked with an asterisk. GTG is the purple “Glory to God” hymnal. STF is the “Sing the Faith” smaller blue hymnal)

Call to Worship
Leader: The kingdom of God is here, and coming. People: A mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches. Leader: The kingdom of God is here, and coming. People: Yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all was leavened. Leader: The kingdom of God is here, and coming. People: Treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then joyfully sells all he has and buys the field. Leader: The kingdom of God is here, and coming. People: A merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one of great value, sells all of his possessions and buys the pearl. Leader: The kingdom of God is here, and coming. People: Let all who have ears, hear.
*Hymn - “You Are My Strength When I am Weak” GTG #519 tune - Jernigan Prayer of Confession (unison)
God of Glory, Grace and Wisdom: you have made us in your image, but we do not always show your gracious face. We are called to follow the Christ, but fatigued by the stresses of our lives, we often do not have the energy or enthusiasm. And when we see the Spirit standing with the oppressed and outcast, we too often turn and walk the other way.
Creator God, Master of the Universe: have mercy on us; Jesus Christ, Brother and Sister to the poor: have mercy on us; Holy Spirit, Comfort of the broken-hearted: have mercy on us. Time for silent confession and reflection.
*Words of Assurance Leader: When we confess our need for God in our lives, we become aware of God’s presence. People: When we confess our sins, we find God’s forgiveness waiting. Leader: As forgiven people, we receive a new relationship with God and our world. People: We praise God for through the Risen Christ, we have new life!
*Congregational Response - “Lead Me, Guide Me” GTG #740 I am weak and I need your strength and power to help me over my weakest hour. Help me through the darkness your face to see. Lead me, O Lord, lead me. Refrain Lead me, guide me, along the way, for if you lead me, I cannot stray. Lord, let me walk each day with thee. Lead me, O Lord, lead me.
*Sharing of the Peace Leader: The peace of Christ be with you. People: And also with you.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD
Offering
What shall we offer as a fitting response to your abounding grace? Will our offerings support a prophet’s ministry in our midst
and to the world? Will they extend a cup of pure water in a thirsty land and life-sustaining food when there has been no hope?
Will they ennoble us for more creative outreach? Bless our gifts with affirmative answers in which we can rejoice.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Special Music *Doxology - “Now Thank We All Our God” GTG #643 Now thank we all our God with heart and hands and voices, who wondrous things hath done, in whom this world rejoices; who, from our mothers’ arms, hath bless us on our way with countless gifts of love, and still is ours today. Prayer of Dedication Prayers of the People Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Prayers of thanksgiving, intercession, petition
All: Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.
Please join us in the Lounge for coffee and fellowship time.
