Officers and Committees As the first quarter of this year ends and I reflect on the events of these past three months, I can certainly say that our chapter is a busy one and involved in many SAR activities. To begin the year, our annual banquet was a big suc-cess with almost seventy percent of our membership in atten-dance. Less than two weeks after our chapter’s banquet, the Georgia Society’s Banquet and Awards’ Luncheon was held in Duluth at which our chapter was well represented. During the luncheon, it was truly a great honor to step forward and accept the Distinguished Chapter Award on behalf of the Captain John Collins Chapter.

Following the GASSAR Banquet, sev-eral of our members attended and partici-pated in the Revolutionary Days’ Parade and the Kettle Creek Battleground Memo-rial Ceremony on February 11th in Wash-ington, Georgia. Amidst a crowd of ap-proximately three hundred and while the temperature was dropping and the wind whistling through those Georgia pines on top of War Hill, our own Everett Porter sang the National Anthem to begin the memorial ceremony. While the chilling temperature kept everyone shivering, the respect and honor exhibited during that ceremony was intense and reverent. As I reflect on these recent activities, I am in-spired by the patriotism that has been and is continually displayed by this chapter and I am so very honored to serve as your president.

Calling Post The chapter takes advan-tage of an automated calling service to remind members of meetings and notify them of important news. If you want your name added or deleted from this list, call or email Charlie Rhyne 770.955.4543 [email protected]

Collins Member News & Happenings

We held our first Board of Managers’ meeting this year on February 16th and had an awesome turnout of officers and committee chairs. Several issues were resolved and several of our compatriots

have stepped forward to take on new leadership responsi-bilities.

Lamon Smith will chair our Veterans Committee.

John Mattingly will chair our Welcome Commit-tee and our newly formed Education Committee.

Bill Coffeen will chair our Membership Committee.

The Cemetery & Patriot Grave Committee will be chaired by Lee Hulsey.

Lamar Cheatham will co-chair our Public Relations’ Committee.

Larry Guzy will serve as our Assistant Registrar.

Please join me in congratulating these and all our committee chairs. Without the leadership of our committee chairs and the participation of our membership, it would not have been possible to achieve our current status.

Wayne Brown, President

PROCLAMATIONS

Members of the John Collins chapter were successful this year in obtaining Patriots Day Proclamations from three mu-nicipalities and the county. Kennesaw, Powder Springs and Marietta issued proclamations as well as Cobb County.

Wayne Brown and various Compatriots attended ceremo-nies where the proclamations were read.

Coordinating these proclamations with county and city offi-cials also maintains our contact with these governments to facilitate participation in other appropriate events.

Charles Switzer rand Rodney Pritchett both received Certificates for Perfect Attendance during the Feb-ruary meeting. Bill Teasley received his Perfect Attendance certificate in March.

John Mattingly has been receiving a lot of attention lately, receiving a Certificate of Appreciate in February for his service in set-ting up for Chapter meetings and being welcomed as a new member in March.

Perfect Attendance Certificates

A new tradition for the Collins Chapter

has been instituted by President Wayne

Brown to recognize those loyal members

who never miss a chapter meeting.

Curtis McWaters has long made it his goal to in-crease the number of flag certificates issued to rec-ognize patriotic display of the American Flag. At the March meeting he presented one to member Bill Teasley.

New Citizens

The Georgia Society Board of Managers meeting is scheduled for April 28th, in Barnesville, beginning at 10 a.m. Members do not need to be officers in order to attend and contribute to the man-agement of the state society. Regional Vice President Curtis McWaters customarily attends and can provide further information on this meeting to any member who may wish to attend.

David Martin has been coordinating with elementary schools to have their students enter the Poster contest. A presentation was made to several classes at Sope Creek Elementary School, for a total of about 120 students. A similar number were at the presentation at Kincaide. Larry Guzy assisted David in encourag-ing the students to participate by discussing the Revolutionary War in the South as part of their curriculum.
