Grounding the "Flyover" Under Way Yeah, bridges don't really fly, but the 1960's era eastbound I-670 "flyover" bridge started getting its "wings" clipped this past Sunday night. Demolition crews started breaking up and removing the old reinforced concrete road surface and guardrails with "hoe-ram" machines, excavators and cranes. And by dawn's early light, all that was left were the steel I-beams that supported the 940-foot roadway that once "flew" traffic over I-71. Demolition is expected to take two weeks and will involve some nightly closures of I-71. Here's the schedule and detour information: Sunday, February 5 and Monday, February 6: I-71 northbound will close nightly from 10 pm to 5 am and be detoured to I-670 eastbound then to Leonard Avenue to I-670 westbound to I-71 northbound for demolition of the existing flyover bridge. Tuesday, February 7 and Wednesday, February 8: I-71 southbound will close nightly from 10 pm to 5 am and be detoured to I-670 westbound to SR-315 southbound to I-71 southbound for continued demolition of the existing flyover bridge. Wednesday, February 8 to Friday, February 10: Jack Gibbs Boulevard will be closed daily from 9 am to 7 pm to build new bridge abutments on the I-670 bridge over St. Clair Avenue. Grounding the "Flyover" Under Way Yeah, bridges don't really fly, but the 1960's era eastbound I-670 "flyover" bridge started getting its"wings" clipped this past Sunday night. Demolition crews started breaking up and removing the oldreinforced concrete road surface and guardrails with "hoe-ram" machines, excavators and cranes. And by dawn's early light, all that was left were the steel I-beams that supported the 940-footroadway that once "flew" traffic over I-71.

Demolition is expected to take two weeks and will involve some nightly closures ofI-71. Here's the schedule and detour information:

Sunday, February 5 and Monday, February 6: I-71 northbound will close nightly from 10 pm to 5 am and be detoured to I-670 eastbound then toLeonard Avenue to I-670 westbound to I-71 northbound for demolition of the existing flyoverbridge. Tuesday, February 7 and Wednesday, February 8:I-71 southbound will close nightly from 10 pm to 5 am and be detoured to I-670 westbound toSR-315 southbound to I-71 southbound for continued demolition of the existing flyover bridge. Stretching for Safety: It Isn't Just for Super BowlAthletesPre-game warm-ups aren't just important to prevent injuries for athletes playing in any sport.Check out the construction workers and supervisors for the Columbus Crossroads Project.

It's part of a daily stretching routine to limberup muscles and prevent on-the-job injuriesfrom heavy lifting. And because human backsaren't the only things lifting heavy loads, dailybriefings are held on construction activity andwhat safety measures are required.

"Safety First" isn't just a slogan around theColumbus Crossroads construction site.Safety is literally the first thing discussedevery morning both among Kokosing andODOT project supervisors and construction

crews.

And you are a part of the Capital Crossroads safety effort each time you drive through theconstruction zone on I-71, I-670 or on local streets. Through all of the lane closures and lane shiftsthat have been made to enable construction to proceed, you as motorists have done a great job offollowing directional signs and especially keeping your speed down in work zones. Thank you!Keep up the good work.

You've Now Entered "The Hiring Zone"No science fiction here! Hiring is getting underway and deadlines for applying for jobs withKokosing are fast approaching to meet the increase in construction activity that comes with springweather.

The majority of the hiring will be laborers, operators, and carpenters. All hiring willbe done through local unions halls, sincethe general contractor, Kokosing, is aunion contractor. Women and minoritiesare already a part of the constructioncrews and more are encouraged toapply.

Super Bowl Week "Chalk Talk" - The WallWhen you're on offense, the guards and tackles on the line are the "wall" that protects thequarterback from getting thrown down into the dirt. Just ask Eli Manning or Tom Brady. When it's time to hold back the dirt itself, it takes a tough, anchored wall to do the job. Just askCoach....er....CH2M Hill Engineer Mark Maday, a member of the design team, as he delivers the"chalk talk" on the innovative MSE (Mechanically-Stabilized Earth) walls beefing up the newbridges for the Columbus Crossroads.
