A Message From ARW President, Bonnie Hochberg

Page 2

As we near the end of 2013, I would like to thank all of

you for making my first term as President of the Arrowhead Re-

publican Women as fulfilling as it has been. The officers and

committeewomen who serve you are such wonderful, hard-

working women. They each exemplify the ideals of the Republi-

can Party, believing in the strength of our nation and the free-

dom and dignity of each American. Their hard work and ideals

have made me look good.

I look forward to welcoming our new board members as well as those women who have served

us and who will continue to take on new responsibilities in other capacities. We have a fabulous lineup

of speakers, fund raisers, projects for Caring for America, and educational programs.

With the Christmas season peeking around every corner, as you celebrate, I hope this poem

written by Norman Wesley Brooks kindles your Christmas spirit:

" Let Every Day Be Christmas"

Christmas is forever, not for just one day,

For loving, sharing, giving, are not to put away

Like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.

The good you do for others is good you do yourself.

Peace on Earth, good will to men,

Kind thoughts and words of cheer, are things we should use often

And not just once a year.

~Norman Wesley Brooks~

May this joyous season bring you peace, health, and happiness though out the coming

year.

Bonnie Hochberg , President—ARW

Happy Hanukkah

Merry Christmas!

Woo-hoooo! What a difference a month makes! You guys have made a TREMENDOUS showing in

getting your renewals in this last month! We can’t thank you enough for your continued support of ARW

activities! We now have 139 in ARW – 122 members and 17 associates. Yee-haw!

We had three NEW members in November and two new Associate members! YAY! You guys are

THE BEST membership recruiters and WELCOME to our new friends! The renewals have REALLY been

pouring in! Many thanks for that! The numbers have changed enough that I can more easily count who

has NOT signed up yet, and we’re only missing 49! (that includes 6 Associates) We’re VERY excited to have

ALL of your names in the RoundUp drawing at the January meeting for YOUR chance to win a FREE $20

luncheon. TWO names will be drawn in January for those renewing by December 31 with ONE MORE

CHANCE to win in February for ONE free luncheon.

Congratulations to Ms. Clela Wanamaker and Ms. Betty Sherry for bringing TWO friends each as

guests to our November luncheon! We will have NO BUSINESS (and hopefully LOTS of guests!) at the De-

cember holiday party. I’ll thank you ahead of time for all of the extra friends

you’ll bring to the event (need NOT be Republican for this one!), and we’ll be

back in business in January with our new team of officers.

Which brings me to my closing. Thank you SO MUCH for the support and

assistance you’ve provided me as the 2nd Vice President in charge of Member-

ship for the club these past 2 years! It means a great deal and I’ve learned a ton.

Club bylaws suggest folks do not stay in the same position more than 2 years in a

row, and I believe that’s a good policy. Time to freshen things up! Change is a

GOOD thing. You’re in FABULOUS hands with Ms. Arlene Goldblatt who has a

BUNCH of ideas simmering already. Many thanks to the Membership Team of

Ms. Anna Morrison, Ms. Jan Boydston, Ms. Natalie Cummings, Ms. Sandra Lena-Johnson, and Ms. Pam

Pearson! You guys were HUGE in your ideas and enthusiasm for moving ARW forward!

We’ll be in touch at the meetings. I’ll continue to assist Membership and ARW endeavors however

I’m needed, and you’ll find me regularly as part of the Reservation Team and manning the website.

Enjoy the holidays!

AMERICA’S DECLINE UNDER OBAMA ISN’T DUE TO MISTAKE By: 3RD Vice President, Jan Martinson

America’s decline under Obama is not a mistake, ignorance or incom-petence at the hands of a community organizer. It’s a purposeful brilliant plan hatched by Obama and his cohorts to destroy capitalism, American ex-ceptionalism, Judeo-Christian values, and the American Dream. ObamaCare is the well-planned program to appear magnanimous to

all by Marxists who have finally been able to come out of the shadows with

Obama and crew. Make no mistake to what is happening before your eyes;

strong Communist ideologues who despise America in every manner are in

positions of power and have long awaited their self-professed destiny to de-

stroy this Nation. Those placed in positions of great and far-reaching influ-

ence at the highest echelons of our government have promoted an illusion to

the people, but in reality, behind the curtain, they have deviated from their purpose to transform Amer-

ica into a broken Country incapable of exerting much positive influence any longer in the world.

ObamaCare is but one platform by which they intend to accomplish their goal. America is being neutered

in our Churches, our Schools, our Nation’s military, economy, culture, heritage and values. All of these

happenings are no accident, but part of the orchestrated agenda to create America into a country it was

never intended to become by those who despise the foundations of this once great respected Nation.

Obama has also given himself unilateral authority over elections, by establishing the “Presidential

Commission of Election Administration”, which gives him the power to appoint nine individuals to ad-

dress voting problems . He who controls the election system controls the outcome. Obama has just na-

tionalized our election system by Executive Order. I wonder who of the distinguished individuals, whom

the President will pick will be? Maybe Eric Holder, Jesse Jackson, George Soros, U.N.Workers, just to

name a few?

NFRW Extends Deadline on Summer Internships To involve more young women in the political process and to provide educational opportunities, the National Fed-eration of Republican Women offers summer internships to female undergraduate college students. The Dorothy Andrews Kabis Internship is named after former National Federation of Republican Women President Dorothy Andrews Kabis who served from 1963-1967 and was later appointed Treasurer of the United States by President Richard Nixon. Each year the program offers three young women the opportunity to spend part of the summer in our nation’s capitol working in the headquarters of the country’s foremost women’s political organization. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, undergraduate college students age 21 and over, having completed high school but not yet graduated from college. Applicants should have a general knowledge of government and a keen interest in politics and skills adaptable to a busy office. The internship provides housing in the D.C. metropolitan area and round-trip airfare. A small monetary allowance is given. Interns must pay for meals, daily travel to and from the office and any tourism. Applicants must submit required documents to their State Federation president by January 6, 2014. Each State may now submit as many applications as it chooses to NFRW by February 1, 2014. For State president ad-dresses, please go to www.nfrw.org/contact.htm or contact the NFRW at 703-548-9688. The application may be found at www.nfrw.org.

Have a Blessed Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is a particularly American holiday. The word evokes images of football, family reunions, roasted turkey with stuffing, pumpkin pie and, of course, the Pilgrims and Wampanoag, the acknowledged founders of the feast. But was it always so?

As with Native traditions in America, celebrations - complete with merrymaking and feasting - in England and throughout Europe after a successful crop are as ancient as the harvest-time itself. In 1621, when their labors were re-warded with a bountiful harvest after a year of sickness and scarcity, the Pilgrims gave thanks to God and celebrated His bounty in the Harvest Home tradition with feasting and sport (recreation). To these people of strong Christian faith, this was not merely a revel; it was also a joyous outpouring of gratitude.

In a letter from “E.W.” (Edward Winslow) to a friend in England, he says: “And God be praised, we had a good increase…. Our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling that so we might after a special manner rejoice together….” Winslow continues, “These things I thought good to let you understand… that you might on our behalf give God thanks who hath dealt so favourably with us.”

In 1622, without his approval, Winslow’s letter was printed in a pamphlet that historians commonly call Mourt’s Relation. This published description of the First Thanksgiving was lost during the Colonial period. It was redis-covered in Philadelphia around 1820. Antiquarian Alexander Young included the entire text in his Chronicles of the Pil-grim Fathers (1841). Reverend Young saw a similarity between his contemporary American Thanksgiving and the 1621 Harvest Feast. In the footnotes that accompanied Winslow’s letter, Young writes, “This was the first Thanksgiving, the harvest festival of New England. On this occasion they no doubt feasted on the wild turkey as well as venison.”

The American Thanksgiving also has its origin in the faith practices of Puritan New England, where strict Calvin-ist doctrine sanctioned only the Sabbath, fast days and thanksgivings as religious holidays or “holy days.” To the Puri-tans, a true “thanksgiving” was a day of prayer and pious humiliation, thanking God for His special Providence. Auspi-cious events, such as the sudden ending of war, drought or pestilence, might inspire a thanksgiving proclamation. It was like having an extra Sabbath during the week. Fasts and thanksgivings never fell on a Sunday. In the early 1600s, they were not annual events. Simultaneously instituted in Plymouth, Connecticut and Massachusetts, Thanksgiving be-came a regular event by the middle of the 17th century and it was proclaimed each autumn by the individual Colonies.

The Continental Congress proclaimed the first national Thanksgiving in 1777. A somber event, it specifically recommended “that servile labor and such recreations (although at other times innocent) may be unbecoming the pur-pose of this appointment [and should] be omitted on so solemn an occasion.”

Presidents Washington, Adams and Monroe proclaimed national Thanksgivings, but the custom fell out of use by 1815, after which the celebration of the holiday was limited to individual state observances. By the 1850s, almost every state and territory celebrated Thanksgiving.

Many people felt that this family holiday should be a national celebration, especially Sarah Josepha Hale, the influential editor of the popular women’s magazine Godey’s Lady’s Book. In 1827, she began a campaign to reinstate the holiday after the model of the first Presidents. She publicly petitioned several Presidents to make it an annual event. Sarah Josepha Hale’s efforts finally succeeded in 1863, when she was able to convince President Lincoln that a national Thanksgiving might serve to unite a war-torn country. The President declared two national Thanksgivings that year, one for August 6 celebrating the victory at Gettysburg and a second for the last Thursday in November.

Neither Lincoln nor his successors, however, made the holiday a fixed annual event. A President still had to pro-claim Thanksgiving each year, and the last Thursday in November became the customary date. In a controversial move, Franklin Delano Roosevelt lengthened the Christmas shopping season by declaring Thanksgiving for the next-to-the-last Thursday in November. Two years later, in 1941, Congress responded by permanently establishing the holiday as the fourth Thursday in the month.

The Caring for America team would like to thank all of you who participated in the “My Nail

Friends” project. It was heart-warming for us to realize you understood first and foremost the reasons

for this project. It is not just to color the nails of the residents of Grandview, but to show them we care,

to let them tell their stories to someone who will listen, among other things. God bless each of you who

helped! Who knows? Perhaps someday we will be in their shoes and wish someone would be there for

us, too! If you would like to bring more nail polish, emery boards, please feel free to bring them in De-

cember. THANK YOU!

Our next project for JANUARY will be “Pets for Vets”. This is a local or-

ganization headed by Emily Sabo. This group will obtain, train and provide dogs

for the men and women returning from combat in the war. As many of you re-

alize, many of our soldiers suffer with PTSD, as well as many other debilitating

injuries. We are in the process of obtaining a dog and training it for a demon-

stration in January. Emily will be our guest speaker, and will provide a Power

Point presentation to explain “Pets for Vets” and answer your questions. In the

meantime, please ask SANTA for gift cards from Pet Smart or Petco when you

do your Xmas shopping. In January, for those who prefer, you will be given a

list of suggested supplies needed for the dogs.
