U.S. Citizen

What is a citizen?

A citizen is an individual with certain rights and

duties under a government and who, by birth or by

choice, owes allegiance to that government.

14th AmendmentAll persons born or naturalized in the U.S., and

subject to its jurisdiction, are citizens of the United States and the state in which they reside.

BIRTH

• You are an American citizen by birth if you were born in the US.

• You are an American citizen by birth (in most cases), even if you were born outside the US but if both your parents are US citizens, and at least one of them lived in the US at some point in his/her life.

• You are an American citizen by birth (in most cases), if,

according to the USCIS guide ALL of the following is true: – One of your parents were a U.S. citizen when you were born;

Your citizen parent lived at least 5 years in the United States before youwere born; and

– At least 2 of these 5 years in the United States were after your citizenparent’s 14th birthday.
