11 hich arc attached two CD-ROi'd

to\\'er~ each containing ~ix drivc.. This

machinc is known as thc CD-ROi\1

server. The CD-RO I server is

connected to the Collcge's high speed

cthernct nctwork and consequently

anI' appropriateh- configured PC

attaehcd to the ethernet has thc

potential to access the server. It should

be clearly understood that the older,

slOlI cr tyPC of nctll'ork connection to

PAD or EPAD will not support aece s

to the CD-ROi\1 network. Although

manv acadcmie scaff do have ethernet

connections to their offices, there are

still a significant number who do not.

Thc College has recognised the

importance of fast computer

communications and there is noli' a

centrally funded programmc in place

to provide cthcrnet connections to

cvery member of the academic staff by

the middle of next ses ion.

The CD-Ra 1 server i located at

the Strand campus and, because of the

addcd complexity in setting up

computer communications bctll'ecn

site" access will initially be limited to

PCs at the Strand. Howel"er.

prel im inar\, experimelltal work has

becn tarted on expanding the service

to other College eampuse . The fir. t

trial. hal'e been successful and it is

planned to introduce inter-site

opcration by the beginning of thc next

academic session.

11 the important publishers of

CD-RO.'I databascs now pr()\'ide

earch programmcs that 11 ill run on

PC~ under \ Iiero'>oft \\·indoll"s. These

\\'indo\\'~ programme pro\'ide much

greater functionality and case of use

than the older t\'pe of search

programme~ that run under DO.. The

dccision was thcreforc takcn to

'uppOrt only \\'indows and not thc

DOS ,earch programmes. This

decision grcath- reduces thc tcchnical

complexit\· and .upport requirements.

Consequentlv. in order to acecss the

C[)-RO:'-.I nctllork. a high-cnd PC

capablc of running \\'indows will be

neces ar\'.

fllany readers 1I·i11 be aware that

CD-ROfll discs can storc graphics.

sound and \'ideo in addition to purel\'

textllal data. This f<lnge of data types

i' normall, referred to as multimedia.

The information content of multi

media is I'ery much greater than text,

and the computer communications

infrastructure within the College is not

vet suitable for multi-user access to

multimedia CD-ROflls across the

network. Such CD-ROflls ean

currently only be used effcetively by

standalone, single user PCs. However.

there arc already departmellts such as

Geographv which wish to use

multimedia CD-ROM discs to teach

relatively large groups of students. In

order to cater for thi' demand, the

Computing Centre is planning to

equip a laboratory with appro "imatel)

25 powerful PCs each of wh ieh wi 11

hal'e its own CD-ROfll drive.

In eonclu ion I would like to

thank other members of the group who

have made great efforts to ensure the

success of this project. They are Simon

Jackson and John Henderson of the

Library and i\lark Stewart of the

Computing Centre. II' more

information is required on any a peet

of the CD-ROfll network. please

point to a further improl'ement for

199.1 graduate~, de~pite the increa\c in

The percentage of King's

employment inerea\ed from 41.1 'k in

1993 to 45A!!t in 1994: the national

figure for 1994 \\'a~ 46.7'k. At King'

the unemplo) ment rate fell from 7.7'k

in 19CJ3 to 6.5% in 1994, compared

11 ith a national figure ofl.O'k in 1CJCJ4.

~ational figures excludt: those for the

Jnd training from King\ declined

King' graduatcs are regular I'isiwr~ to
