In its fifth year, DEN’s education program has evolved to provide more hands-on, intensive learning experiences. Intern orientation ran three days, focusing on the City and County of Denver as an employer, including a visit to the Webb Building and other city buildings, offering an airfield tour with interns from other city agencies, and provided three sessions about individual career development. At the final event, Kim Day and the executive leadership team dropped in to welcome the interns. One intern learned he attends Kim’s alma mater, and all learned that Eric Hiraga began his career in Denver city government as an intern.

The summer internship program runs from June 1 – August 12. Here is a list of this year’s summer interns and a couple new year-round interns – please welcome them and share your passion for the airport with them!

Building for the FutureThe Airport Infrastructure Management (AIM) Division Capital Improvement Program was held on June 23, 2016, at the Renaissance Denver Stapleton Hotel, Denver, Colo. This outreach event brought together a diverse blend of potential prime contractors and potential subcontractors, including certified firms. The event’s purpose was to provide an overview of DEN’s robust $2 billion capital improvement program. Throughout the event, AIM had 16 subject-matter experts share their knowledge with the 361 attendees of the event.

The main objectives for the attendees were the following:

• To provide a clear overview of this multiyear program that includes projects comprising airside, landside and terminal work

• To share knowledge and common practices with others considering a response to a request for proposal

Overall, it provided information pertaining to the upcoming capital improvement projects and highlighted best practices for responding to a request for proposal. Specifically, the outreach event focused on the general goods and services portions of the CIP projects, discussion of the conflict matrix and a general understanding of obtaining Minority/Women Business Enterprise (M/WBE) and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certification. In addition, the outreach event provided an opportunity for several of the large potential primes to network one-on-one with a variety of potential subcontractors from a wide range of disciplines for potential future partnerships. The format included a general session, working lunch and exhibit hall.

Denver International Airport Names Darryl Jones Chief Real Estate Officer

Will lead continued airport development and economic expansion of the DEN Real Estate Program on 17,000 acres

Denver International Airport today announced the appointment of Darryl M. Jones as its chief real estate officer. As one of five executive vice president positions at the airport, Jones will be responsible for leading the continued development and economic expansion of the airport’s real estate program on 17,000 developable acres. This property includes the transit-oriented communities adjacent to the commuter rail stops at 61st Avenue and Peña Boulevard and 40th Avenue and Airport Boulevard, and the 1,500-acre commercial-use pilot program established between Denver and Adams County and ratified by the voters last November.

Jones, who will begin his new position at the airport on June 27, has a long history of serving in leadership roles in real estate, planning and development, with both public and private sector organizations over his 28- year career. With a background as a city planner, he has extensive knowledge in real estate development, regulation, urban design, planning processes and planning development.

He comes to DEN from the Coventry Development Corporation where he served as vice president and development manager. Since 2004, he has managed and directed major land planning and development projects in Colorado, Florida and Texas. These projects include the RidgeGate development in Lone Tree, Colo., Springwood Village and Baybrook in Houston, Texas, and Hobe Grove in Martin County, Fla.

Jones previously served as the director of planning and government affairs for Oakwood Homes and as planning manager for the Community Development Department of the City of Greenwood Village, which is the position which brought him to Colorado in 1998. Prior to his time in Colorado, he held positions in planning and zoning for the cities of Boston, Mass., and Santa Cruz, Campbell and Mountain View, Calif.

Jones holds a master’s degree in city planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and a Bachelor of Arts degree in landscape architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. He is currently serving as the president of the Schweiger Ranch Foundation board of directors and is a member of the Greenwood Village City Council.

“After a nationwide search to find a professional with the right mix of planning, development and political experience, we are delighted to welcome Darryl Jones to the DEN team,” said Kim Day, CEO of Denver International Airport. “His knowledge of the region and experience with large real estate projects will enhance the ability for Darryl to lead our efforts to optimize the revenue potential of airport property and to collaborate with our adjacent municipalities and property owners to ensure efficient infrastructure investments and coordinated land uses, and to stimulate regional economic development.”

Denver International Airport Offers Tips for a Smooth Summer Travel ExperienceWith the busy summer travel season underway, Denver International Airport is providing a number of services and tips that will help passengers have a smooth traveling experience. The airport has seen eight consecutive months of record-setting passenger traffic, and the summertime is historically the busiest time of the year.

The July 4th holiday week is especially busy, and this year the airport is projecting record-setting traffic with about 1.2 million passengers from June 28 through July 4—about 13 percent more than the same time last year. Thursday and Friday are expected to be the busiest days during this time period, with more than 180,000 passengers each of those days, compared with DEN’s average daily traffic of

148,000 passengers. The airport projects the busiest times at the TSA screening checkpoints to be from about 5 to 10 a.m., and from 1 to 4 p.m. Passengers are encouraged to arrive early.

Top-Five Travel Tips

• Arrive at the airport early! DEN generally recommends being at the airport and at the TSA screening area at least two hours prior to boarding time. Add in some additional time for parking or passenger drop-off, airline check-in and baggage check services as needed.

• Skip the traffic and use the University of Colorado A Line commuter rail, offering a direct link from Denver Union Station to the airport in just 37 minutes ($9/day).

• Driving? Check flydenver.com for the latest, real-time information about parking availability in all airport lots. The Pikes Peak and Mt. Elbert shuttle lots are just $8/day and are one of the most popular choices for summer vacationers. Short-term parking is available in the East and West garages for $4/hour. This area is intended for passenger pick-up and drop-off. Guarantee yourself a garage parking space by reserving one ahead of time at www.DIAReservedParking.com. Reservations can be made up to one year in advance and cost just $4/day in addition to regular garage rates. The airport offers free vehicle services for its customers, including jump starts, tire inflation, and car key retrieval if they’ve been locked in your vehicle. For any of these services, call (303) 342-4645, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

• Plan ahead for security screening by knowing the TSA rules for liquids, gels, aerosols and carry-on items. Travelers may bring one carry-on bag and one personal item (purse, laptop, etc.) through security. Put medications and other required items in your carry-on bag.

• Expedited screening is available if you are a TSA Pre✓™ member. Passengers can sign up for TSA Pre✓™, which costs $85 for five years, following an application process inside the Jeppesen Terminal application center, located on the east side of Level 5, near the south screening checkpoint.

Delta Continues to Invest in Denver International Airport with Opening of Sky Club

Delta Air Lines and Denver International Airport are proud to announce the opening of a new Delta Sky Club on the A Concourse.

The Denver club—located just across the pedestrian bridge leading from the Jeppesen Terminal to Concourse A—features more than 4,600 square feet of relaxation and about 90 seats. The club includes art

from local galleries, complimentary New Belgium Ranger craft beer and Starbucks coffee, in additional to many other amenities.

“Delta’s decision to invest in a new lounge at Denver International Airport underscores the carrier’s continued commitment to the Denver market and the airport,” said Mookie Patel, DEN’s senior vice president of airline affairs and commercial property. “Delta has also increased its seat capacity at DEN and will offer nearly 50-percent more flights in July compared with the same time just two years ago.

The new Delta Sky Club is part of a global investment by the airline. For more than two years, Delta has been actively renovating, reinventing and revitalizing the 50 Delta Sky Clubs around the globe. Delta also recently increased its Denver flight schedule, adding five daily flights to Los Angeles. “Denver is an emerging market for service in the western U.S.,” said Claude Roussel, managing director – Delta Sky Club. “Opening a new Delta Sky Club combined with increasing service earlier this month means our guests are assured of having a more productive and pleasant travel experience, giving them another reason to fly Delta.”

Delta Sky Club memberships are available at www.delta.com. Single-visit passes are available for purchase at the check-in desk.
