India being a predominantly high energy consumer has a huge need of electricity to manage the ever

increasing demand that fuels a growing economy. Thermal and hydro based fuel sources play animportant role in our country's energy mix. India has one of the largest reserves of coal in the world, butthe question of energy security still remains high.

The last few years have seen a record breaking generation capacity addition. However targetachievement for the current five year plan (FYP) is far from complete. An estimated 78 GW of capacitywas expected to be added in the present FYP. However with various issues hampering the sector, the

target has repeatedly been revised with the final figure standing at 51 GW approximately

The targeted capacity as per the Ministry of Power's review is at 28 GW for the current year, i.e. 2011-12.Out of this a meagre 1285 MW has been achieved and the remaining year is expected to add around 6-

8 GW only, way below the planned target. Timely commissioning of power plants remains the key areaof concern.

One of the major delays in the commissioning of projects is the lack of timely availability of equipmentsfor power projects. India's indigenous equipment capacity at present is strained with limited capacity tosupport the planned capacity addition. Nearly 6900 MW from the year's target of 28000 MW is slipping, out of which 5336 MW is from BHEL's end alone.

In light of these, Metis has come out with a report on Commissioning Projection of Thermal and Hydro

Power Plants for FY12, highlighting the current status and expected completion targets of criticalprojects in the current year, on which the performance of the present plan depends
