DANGER WILL ROBINSON DANGER

I know that starting my monthly article this way does not make sense unless you are old enough to remember that Will Robinson was “Lost in Space” in an imag-inary TV series. Kathy and I faced dan-

ger in a very real world.

Imagine, if you will, Kathy and I peacefully asleep on Gear Down in G shed at Oxbow. It is O dark thirty (that is pilot jargon for sometime in the middle of the night) and all is well. We are rudely awakened by our smoke/carbon monoxide detector with the obnoxious female computer voice sounding off: “WARNING, WARNING, CARBON MONOXIDE, CARBON MONOXIDE. Of course, my first thought is that the detector was malfunctioning. I immediately jumped up to check it out on-ly to hear a second detector repeat the same warning. Meanwhile, Kathy is convinced that some evil force from the dark side is trying to interrupt her sleep. (Those of you, who know her well, know that anytime between 9pm and 9am, it is dangerous to wake her up.) The third detector in our forward berth was quiet, so she felt safe. With my not so tiny buns freezing in my skives (a sight, thankfully, you did not have to see), I opened all of the windows and doors, turned off the heater/air conditioner, and waited for the warning to subside. When all was quiet, I tried to figure out the problem.

I am not an engineer, but I know that carbon monoxide is creat-ed by some sort of combustion. Obviously, since I had only my electric, factory installed, heater running, my first suspicion was that one of my neighbors was supplying the culprit air. VICE COMMODODRE ... Rich Harrington

It is Thursday the 23rd of Febru-ary and Patti and I are sitting on the boat watching the wind blow and the waves roll down the river. The reason we are not at work is that we are celebrating our 40th anniversary and Patti’s 60th birth-day. We thought of all kinds of things to do and places to go, but we decided to just come down and

enjoy the one thing that we truly love to do and that is enjoy our Patricia K. and each other!!

We have been so fortunate in the last seven years not to only learn about the rivers and the ocean of Northern California, but also to meet and enjoy so many people that we would have never met if not for boating. I know that if you add up all of the cost of owning a boat over the years it is quite a shock but we only go through life once and the memories and adventures we’re all living are well worth the cost! Patti and I consider many of the members of OBYC to be some of the closet friends we have.

I would like to thank Gary and Jan Thornburgh for the vision to start the Valentine’s Day cruise-out to Marina West. It was great three years ago and it gets better and better each year. This year we had nine boats that made the trip over. Frank Louthan led Patricia K, Electa L, Dark Side, Gear Down, Vo and Water, Flotation Device, Forever Young at Heart and Island Time. Some of the OBYC crew decided to take the land yachts in order to enjoy the wine tast-ing and great dinner put on by Marina West. The land yachters were, Sylvia Anderson, Ken (Great OBYC fisherman want to be) and Lisa Carr and Jim and Kathy Landon. We were also joined by Caliente Yacht Club and a Margarita Bar was set up on Patri-cia K. A great afternoon of fun was had by all!

Dinner was a great surprise for Patti and I when we were serenaded by Pat Dietz, Micky and Marilyn Shidler and their daughter Heidi in celebration of our 40th anniversary. Thanks for the song and the great picture that you all presented to us. Believe me, it was a touching moment for Patti and me!

Rich’s article continued on next column ...

Vice Commodore continued ... Sunday morning we were treated to a great break-fast and then were on our way back to our home ma-rinas. I would like to personally give a great big shout out to the Shidlers and the Weinbergs for at-tending their first cruise-out with the Club. They are both a great addition and if you have not had time to visit with them, you are missing out!

Not much to report on the fishing contest. It seems the fish are lying low and the fishermen lower. There was a 26lb stripper caught inside the Willow Berm

Marina last week using a blue gill hanging off over a bobber! For the P.E.T.A. members, Pat Dietz, I guess I should not use the word “hanging”. The weather is starting to warm up so let’s get ready to wet the lines and pull in the big ones. That means over 3lbs Ken!

In closing I would like to say when Patti and I got home after the Valentine Cruise out we were totally exhausted from all of the wild times over the week-end. It was like being back, way back, in our twen-ties. So all of you that were not able to come, you missed out on a fantastic weekend. Don’t let another one slip by. Join in the fun and make some memo-ries.

Your Vice Commodore, Richard

Happy Anniversary, Rich and Patti!!

"Rain rain go away come again another day". What a differ-ence a year makes! It's March and we are dry as a bone. Fortunately for those of us on the Delta we still have enough water under our keels to keep us afloat. However the dry weather is a reminder to all of us to con-serve whenever possible.

On the positive side, I hope you have been able to enjoy the great weather. If you're looking for a good reason to get out on the water, come enjoy the St. Patty's Day fun at SJYC and invite a fellow boater along to see what OBYC is all about.

The membership committee is looking at designing a single informational brochure and application form that includes an attention-getting slogan. Thanks to those of you who have already made suggestions and we welcome more ideas for brochure content and format. Email me at [email protected].

Don't forget the Safety/Membership Day on May 5th at the Willow Berm Sandbar! Prospective members will be able to get their boats inspected, see safety displays, pick up boating safety literature, talk with experienced OBYC members about boating and our club. It will be a fun and informative day for all, so if you are not already berthed at Willow Berm plan to bring your boat and spend the weekend.

warning on your dryer to clean the filter? I did not clean it this year and it was really a mess. I asked three experienced boaters, one a licensed captain, at a blue gavel meeting about the problem, and none of them came up with the solution. Another experi-enced boater said that he had never, in several years, cleaned his filters.

What I am asking you do to, is clean those filters. More importantly, INSTALL CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS IN YOUR BOAT. Kathy and I both could be dead and the boat might have been burned to a crisp, therefore eliminating the need for a cre-mation, along with half of G shed had I left the heat-er running. NO JOKE, this is serious stuff. My de-tectors are Kiddee brand, combination smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. It is now a law that you need carbon monoxide detectors in your house too. DO IT in your boat and home today. Definitely, do not spend another night on your boat without a detector.

Now to Club business: Congratulations to Dave Breninger. He was inducted into Blue Gavel as a past commodore from the Carver Club. Dave has been active in our club and several other Delta or-ganizations. This is just one of his many honors. See photos on page 4.

March is a fun month. Don’t forget that daylight sav-ings time begins on Sunday, March 11th. Our annual St. Patrick’s Day cruise to San Joaquin Yacht Club is March 16-18. SJYC was our sponsor club in 1980 when OBYC was founded. Frank and Jan Louthan have already sent out the flyer, so sign up now. If you cannot boat to SJYC, drive on up and join us for a good time. The menu will include traditional corn beef and cabbage as well as a chicken dish.

Di Lasher and the NCPCA group are joining us for their cruise in at the clubhouse on the 24th. Jan Du-zac is planning a great meal catered by Chris from Spindrift restaurant. Be sure to join us at the club-house. Wear your green in honor of St Patrick’s Day or an Oxbow shirt. We hope to see you there.

Celebrate. Rich

Sharkey’s Adventures

Page 5 Ox Bow

Well, here I am again! This is so great to have my own column! You are such a great yacht club! I thought my adventures would stop at the Lighted Boat Parade on Patricia K but noooooooooo!

Actually those nice people left me tied up with Santa Claus for a couple of weeks!!! I have to admit, it was fun going on another boat ride on New Year’s Eve. We didn’t go very far but when we docked there were all these other boats, people laughing and hugging, tents, food, music and it just seemed to go on and on!

Some nice people (probably Gail Parker-Marshall and Jim Marshall. You know Gail owes me!) FINALLY un-tied me from the front of Patricia K and took me to their nice warm boat Island Style. I know the people on the Patricia K were frantic that I had fallen in the water. It’s nice to be loved.

I watched out the window and people kept eating, drinking, hugging, eating more, and drinking. They seemed to really like each other! I noticed there were cute pink flamingos with beautiful silver bows hanging out in the planters and I thought it would be so much fun to sit on one and watch all the activities! Amazingly, as if reading my mind, Gail and Jim picked me up, put a cute HAPPY NEW YEAR hat on me and plopped me right down on one of those flamingos! This is such a grand yacht club!

The rest of the evening I got to watch all the people eating and drinking more and more. They were laughing and talking and seemed to be awaiting something wonderful because they kept looking at their watches! All of the sudden the decorated Patri-cia K’s lights lit up the whole dock, the music started and the dock started rocking and rolling! It was great fun to watch how these people dance!!!

There were people on the other docks who came to see all the fun! I’m sure they were looking at me though! Then, as if by magic they started putting on beautiful hats like mine, started hootin’ and hollerin’, blowing loud whistles, yelling HAPPY NEW YEAR and kissing each other! It was so much fun to see these happy people! Shortly afterward, they started getting

kind of quiet and that man on Patricia K started making some coffee drinks. Soon people started walking back to their boats and the lights went out. Fortunately those nice people on Patricia K remem-bered I was riding the flamingo and brought me in-side with them. I found out the man’s name is Rich Harrington and he likes to snuggle with me!

I can’t wait to find out what my next adventure is! I’ll keep you posted!

Bark at you soon again! Your Club Mascot … Sharkey

Congratulations to the winner of the February Crossword Puzzle … Gail Parker-Marshall!!

Hi OBYC Members: You are getting better. Thanks for the items that you submitted. Now, the only thing bet-ter would be for you to send me things as they happen so you don’t forget. Send them to: [email protected]. Thank you.

Oh dear, where is the Rear? Happy Birthday calls to Don Dietz have gone unanswered! It is rumored that he and Pat have been kidnapped and taken to an undis-closed location on the coast. They were last seen on the 7th green at Pebble Beach with two young men, presumably their sons, and appeared to be in great spir-its and well cared for. It is not known if they will be released in time to get to SJYC for the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Frank Louthan is the maintenance director at Devil’s Isle. It’s reported that there is a new floor on the deck that has the barbecues and new barbecues too. As that is one of our club’s favorite destinations, the improve-m e n t s w i l l b e m u c h a p p r e c i a t e d ! !

From the party bus at the Wine and Chocolate Festival cruise-out to Marina West YC at Tower Park on Valen-tines weekend: If you want to know where anything is, just ask Sylvia to look between her legs! Viola! ALSO, ask her about the many men she picked up along the way. Steal her phone and take a look at the pictures of Sylvia and the many gorgeous specimens, one from e a c h w i n e r y ! So, picture this: We're enjoying cocktails before dinner at MWYC (on Valentines weekend), and Kathy Wibbeler needs a drink ticket that her Commodore husband had shoved into his pants pocket. Too polite to interrupt as Rich was busy chatting, Kathy stealthily put her hand down Rich's pocket, front pocket, of course. Hmm. Where ARE those drink tickets?? After a little SERIOUS SEARCHING, the tickets were discovered, and she went on her merry way. A few minutes later when Kathy re-turned with a drink in her hand, Rich looked over, no-ticed the drink, and said, "Hey, how did you get that drink when I have the drink tickets????" Go figure! Tyler Holm had his hard cast removed from his arm Feb. 24. His first trophy! Everything looks good, and now he sports a brace for the next couple of weeks.

Truman reports that Karen Howard took a fall and was hospitalized February 3–5 with two cracks in her pelvis and one in her left arm. She then spent 10 days in re-hab and is now home and doing better. She’s hoping to be “back to normal” in time for boating season. Brett, Joli, Annie, and Tyler Holm, along with Grandma Jan Louthan, spent the long Presidents' Day weekend in Tahoe City. There was just enough snow in the meadow behind the condo to make snowmen and go sledding. Yippee! Grandpa Frank stayed home to finish some cabi-nets for the new Holm house.

Floyd and Laurie Enault are going to Arizona to visit Bob & Mary Ann Owsley as well as Jim and Kathy Menden-hall. The latter are no longer members of OBYC, but Kathy is a Past Commodore.

Joe and Nancy Biles want to thank Gary and Jan Thorn-burgh and Mike deLuna for giving up their Monday Presi-dents’ Day holiday to help them move boxes and to Don & Carol for ‘storing’ their patio furniture.

Speaking of the Thornburgh’s, they have moved their boat to Willow Berm Marina, Slip P18. And Louthan’s have moved Monarch down to the end of Ryde (G) Shed at OxBow, opposite Warren and Wendy.

Another “mover” would be Y-Knot. Jim and Kathy Lan-don have returned their boat TO Oxbow after spending a couple of years in Emeryville. They are now berthed in Ryde (G) Shed.

It isn’t too unusual for a couple to celebrate a 50th wed-ding anniversary, but to each have a parent in attend-ance is remarkable. Judy Vance’s father is 93 and Walt’s mother is 96!! And both are still very active and alert. Don Webb officiated at a renewal of Walt and Judy’s vows before approximately 80 close friends and family, including MOST of the original wedding party, at Encinal Yacht Club in Alameda. Two different club members were in the Delta for short visits recently. Vic and RoseMary Diamond were in the area from Feb. 12/13, leaving early on the 14th; and Bob and Mary Ann Owsley made their mid-season trek from Arizona to check up on their home at Oxbow as well as making sure that all is okay with Lucky Dawg.
