OPERATOR and HEAVY MECHANIC EQUIPMENT (A2B) TRAINING

The increasement of human resources is very important in order to

develop productivity. Regarding to that, the Community Development (CD) program of PT Indominco Mandiri (IMM) owns a program “Community for the Community” to increase the human resources so the youth of the villages could work and create something and not be a burden to their family and society. As for the next phase, IMM also acknowledge the worker’s request especially for the A2B operator and A2B mechanic in East Kutai, Bontang, and Kutai Kartanegara continue to increase even without the proper human resources. The workers potential continue to grow each year most of them are not well equipped with the proper training and knowledge and this condition would make them less valuable and makes it harder to accommodate the company’s need in skilled worker. These conditions then inspired IMM to implement training for the A2B operator

as one of the solution to develop the knowledge of human resources located in the surround operational area. The activity started in April, with selection phase in May, followed with work training in June to September 2012. The activity was impelemented together with PT Kitadin Tandung Mayang, PT Pama Persada, PT United Tractors and the Department of Labor. It was first started with A2B training socialization to the stakeholder. Besides giving and increasing the skill of the participants, this training also opened the access for those who are looking for job opportunity in the related work field. The main target of this training would be young men and women in productive age (18 to 25 y.o). in the first phase, an administrative selection needs to be done about suitability and completeness of training form according to the IMM requirements. There are 100 participants from this phase that has fulfilled the administration selection from

the total 120 applicants. The next phase would be psychotest, 60 people made it to the interview phase. And from the interview, 40 people were selected to move on to medical check up selection phase. Before the medical check up, there will be socialization about technical implementation of medical check up to the participants who pass the interview. Forty people who pass the phase will continue with Susbintal activity in Rudal Bontang for one week. After participating the training activities, the participants will be given certificate of training completion. “For the sake of surround community, we hope that this activity would be conducted every year, I am very pleased with these kind of training and really hope that the participants, especially the village’s youth who has gained knowledge from this training would develop and create their own work field,” said H. Andi Nur Alam, Head Village of Suka Rahmat, one of the fostered village of IMM.

Community Empowerment

Through Economics

This time PT Trubaindo Coal Mining (TCM) is developing a couple of activities focusing on the community’s economic development by starting to educate the community to wake

up and realize by being dependence to the company totally will not make their life better in the future. For that, through the economic development programs such as fish cultivating in cages or ponds (TCM provides the seed and food for the groups that has already been formed in some of the fostered villages), also to develop rubber plantation by providing seed and fertilizerso the community would be able to plant the seed in their own area. Starting this year, all of the economic development program will be monitored and assisted through trainings and comparative study. We hope 5 to 10 years ahead, the community surrounds the mining area will havethe ability running their own business through fisheries and rubber plantation. Their life would be better by the support from the company as long as the company sticks by their side. For the community surround the mining area: “To not only receive the fishes but also learn how to fish using the bait given by the company, so in the future they will have strong foundation for a better life”.

On the 4th day of 2012 CDO Forum II implemented in Yogyakarta, the CDO was

scheduled to visit a couple of Best Practice places in Yogyakarta. The CDO was divided to 3 visit groups. The first team (A) visits 2 location; Santan Maguwoharjo in Sleman and Kepurun Manisrenggo in Klaten. The first location to be visited was Santan Village, the place has water sanitation management, household waste processed into usable water for irrigation. As for the second location is Kapurun Village, where Kepurun Pawana Indonesia (KPI) as one of national private department run the agribusiness and agro industry. The A Team arrival on the best practice location was welcomed by an opening presentation by

Mr. Yatmo as the pioneer of Santam Village sanitation program. This presentation tells about the history of Santan Village sanitation program. One of the highlights would be about the initial process on how to change the community’s mindset and outlook about clean water as their primary need, so they finally agreed to participate in building the system. The sanitation process in Santan Village does not use any complex technology in the implementation. Domestic waterwaste from surrounding communities flowed into a reservoir, noted that the waterwaste has to be free from all chemical substances. The waste shelter itself divided into 11 holes by showing 11 stages of process the waste has to go through so it can be use as irigation water. Water in each holes later on treated by droping microbial – different propotion on each stage. Later on the water needs to be despositioned about 4-7 days. Water that is feasible will be streamed by utilizing the gravity to the next hole. The clean water and has passed all of the process stages will be directly channeled to the rice fields. For now, the water usage in

Santan Village is only for watering the rice fields, because the water from the process still has a bellow standard PH for daily consumption. It will need more funds to produce water that is safe to be consumed by the community. However, the shortage of funds makes the Santan Village having hard time and effort to produce good consumption water. After finished explaining about sanitation, Team A went to the second best practice location. In the location, Team A went straight in to the hall located in the KPI, followed by

presentation. The presentation tells about the history of KPI and their hard work, to the membership of KPI – mostly retired PLN employees. After listening to the presentation, Team A was taken in tour to the KPI location to see the condition of the whole area. There is an organic garden, the majority plant planted there is lettuce. What unique is that this

garden uses used holed plastic gutter pipes filled with dirt to be planted with various kinds of plants. So even though the area is very narrow, it doesn’t mean that we cannot plant and produced our own organic vegetables. Nest, we were taken to the livestock area, where there are 3 kinds of livestock in the area, they are cows, goat, and chicken. Besides being sold raw, the meats from this livestock are being processed to become nuggets and meatballs. We were given the chance to try making nuggets and meatballs. After listening about the livestock farmer, the next place to be visited is the catfish ponds. The catfish they have there is the jumbo catfish. Eventhough the KPI has had its own market to sell their agricultural products, but if there are individual requests, the KPI will try to fulfill it. Overall the best practice materials are very interesting and applicable id the team would want to implement it in a program. We hope that this best practice sharing from Team A will give more information and also give ideas to all the CDO in producsing more sustainable programs.

Thursday, June 22nd 2012, the CDO Forum II 2012 participants were scheduled to visit the best

practice locations to gain knowledges that can be applied in their fostered area. This time theTeam B visited Tubin Village located in south Yogyakarta, the sharing is all about small business group to garbage bank and rattan crafts located in Imogiri Road, Bantul. The first visit is to the Sekar Arum Family Income Welfare Business Group (Kelompok Usaha Peningkatan Pendapatan Keluarga Sejahtera /UPPKS). At first we thouth we were going to visit a small factory of snacks. We arrived at a simple house with unique and warm pavilion, we were welcomed by a couple of women who has prepared snacks for us, and it is called Wingko. Wingko is one of the products from Sekar Arum group. They started to introduce the group by telling the history of the group. The group started from the Tubin

Villages’ women willingness in helping their family classifies as middle to low class. And so they started performing the business group and sub-group products which is mushroom crackers. The Sekar Arum group then expanded their business to other kind of snacks also making blangkon crafts and batik fabric to be sold outside Java Island. Valuable lessons taken from this group are about their persistence in selecting and engaging relationship between the groups, approaching related departments, the right strategic marketing and smart financial management. They carefully selected the group member, based on their life’s background, they also questioned the characted of the members to be to the people surround them. This has to be done because the group needed people who are capable in holding their commitment with of without hoping to get any reward

or big advantage from the group. As well as their ability in cooperating with the government due to the feasibility testing of the processed food to enhance competitiveness and product quality, as well as in marketing the product in any event conducted by the local government. Tranparency in profit sharing and financial grouping has always delivered in weekly meeting to boost confidence in every member of the group. Our second visit was to the Bank Sampah Gemah Ripah (Garbage Bank) in Badegan Village, Bantul. This group collected non-organic waste from the surround community to be recycled into valuable product. The interesting thing is the collection of garbage is not for free, they acted like a bank’s customer, but its main commodity is not money, but garbage. The garbage that has been collected then weighed and then after three months they will get monetary benefit from the weighed garbage that has been deposited. The advantage is not big, it is even very small, but the spirit they have bring tremendous impact, one of them is keeping the environment clean and healthy. Positive values that they employ are very valuable, in which they work without expecting any reward, but their spirit in changing themselves to be better by improving their economic quality from small thing but also very sustainable in giving positive impact for life. The last visit is to the Rattan Crafts at Anggun Rotan Bag in Imogiri Road, Bantul. Anggun Rotan is a home industry with rattan bag as its main products. It is very unique, because commonly rattan is well known as raw materials for furniture. The accuracy in selecting an unusual product, makes Anggun Rotan product famous and able to compete in foreign market. The business owner is trying to empower the local community which also helps the local economic. And so the journey ends in Anggun Rattan, let’s hope that the positive values taken from the visits could be applied in our fostered villages. Be optimal in working and start big steps by something simple.
