GarmentsJoseph, however, is criticized for his behavior;indeed, he is punished for placing his trust inman rather than relying solely on G-d. “Thechief butler did not remember Joseph, but for-got him,” and he was left to languish for twomore years in Pharaoh’s dungeon. Rabbi Simon Jacobson

Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu delivereda great speech to the United Nations lastweek.

What makes a great speech? We sometimes know agreat speech when we hear it or when we read it or aboutit in history books. The greatest speech ever, or at leastin our American history, was Lincoln’s Gettysburg Ad-dress. That Lincoln was able to pack such a punch in sofew words is a wonderment of the English language.

Sometimes, a line or two of a speech becomes highlymemorable, bringing greatness to the speech itself. Werecall MacArthur’s “Old Soldiers Never Die…” or FDR’s“You have nothing to fear but fear itself.” The famousline can catapult an otherwise routine speech into great-ness. Many times, the only reason we recall the speech atall is the famous line, such as Lyndon Johnson’s “I will notseek nor will I accept the nomination of my party.”

We tend to be able to identify lousy speeches rather eas-ily. Qadafi’s speech at the U.N. the same week as Ne-tanyahu’s speech will become famous as a joke of aspeech, a truly miserable speech only memorable for howbad it was. I recall what I think was the worst Presidentialspeech I ever heard when President Gerald Ford asked,“What did Congress do in May,” before ripping the monthof May off of a wall calendar. Many times, bad speechessay little and what they do say are said poorly and deliveredpoorly.

That brings us to Netanyahu’s speech. It was powerful. It was great. What made it so great? His delivery wasgood, but not necessarily fiery. There were no lines whichwill be recalled throughout history. Yet, this was an his-torical speech. It was timely. It established the right tone.Netanyahu’s speech changed the tone of conversation anddiscussion. He proved that it is not the Jewish people whomust excuse their actions. The State of Israel does notneed to defend her existence.

Netanyahu was able to use a powerful word, “shame,”in such a way as to put the representatives of the hundredplus nations who just sat there during speeches from thePresident of Iran and other rogue dictators on the spot.Shame on them for permitting “leaders” to question theHolocaust, just six decades after the event. Shame onthem for permitting the denial of historic fact. Shame onthem for bestowing honor on the dishonorable.

The best sources for history are first hand accounts andprimary documents from the actual events. Netanyahumade his case with the primary minutes of the meeting in

1942 of Nazi leaders plotting the “Jewish Solution.” Healso showed the blueprints for Auschwitz-Birkenau. Whatis more real than the blueprints which show the designand details of the horrific place which will forever belinked with evil?

The usual way to try to prove the existence of the Holo-caust has been with pictures of Jewish victims. WhenJews are shown in the pajama-uniforms of Auschwitz, theHolocaust doubters say that these are merely pictures ofindividuals in holding facilities or prisons. Sometimes, pic-tures of bodies stacked high are used. As there is no sin-gle picture of all six million Jewish victims, the Holocaustdoubters then say that we know thousands of Jews werekilled, just as millions of non-Jews who killed in the war.

Netanyahu took a different approach. He showed theactual German documents that have been preserved bysuccessive German governments as a testimony to theircommitment to never again have evil like that perpetratedby their government against the people. Netanyahu’s case:We do not need to rely on the testimony or the accountsof Jews. All civilized peoples recall the horror of theHolocaust. The Germans documented it and each Ger-man government since has preserved the original docu-ments as testimony to the factual events. The message:All civilized people accept the truth of the Holocaust. Ifyou do not accept the historic fact of the Holocaust, youare not civilized. If you permit others to take the loftypulpit of the dais at the United Nations who are outsideof the civilized society, you too become uncivilized.Shame on those who speak. Shame on those who listen.

Wow!

Netanyahu’s speech should be must seeing for all Jewishstudents in programs from Sunday schools through dayschools. This speech which unfortunately took place dur-ing the middle of the work day and was not seen by mostwho were at work or school should be circulated onDVD’s to member families of all synagogues and organ-izations for viewing.

After Netanyahu, we do not need to apologize for ourexistence or the existence of the Jewish state. We do notneed to prove the civilized character of our people or ourstate. We Jews are part of the civilized world. Those whoquestion our right to exist are part of the uncivilized worldand should be ashamed. Nobody ever said it better.

I got to thinking. Even my own children who have beenraised from birth to love Israel and who have been to Is-rael numerous times, have never experienced some of the

Page 10: Community Links Issue 141

truly momentous events in our Jewish history. They reg-ularly see on television snippets from JFK’s inauguralwhere he guided the listeners to “ask not what theircountry could do for you, ask what you can do for yourcountry.” I know my children have seen on the newsand at other times the grainy pictures of FDR address-ing Congress and the nation. Yet, my children havenever heard the spectacular radio accounts of Jewsspontaneously dancing in the streets of New York as thelast votes were cast at the U.N. authorizing the partitionof Palestine and authorizing a Jewish state. My childrenhave never seen the footage of Ben Gurion declaringthe independence of the Jewish state in May 1948. Theynever heard the melodic voice of Abba Eban givingvoice to the Jewish people at the U.N. before the Six DayWar. They have never seen footage of Golda Meir wait-ing on the tarmac of the airport outside Tel Aviv greet-ing her former enemy, the Egyptian President Sadat, ashe descended from his plane seeking peace. They mayhave seen the picture of Rabbi Goren sounding the Sho-far as the Jewish soldiers reached the Kotel in 1967 asthat picture is so ubiquitous. However, they have neverbeen moved by the film of events which have changedJewish history forever and which are central to the evo-lution of Israel as we know it.

There is a need for a “Time-Life” history in film, pho-tographs, and audio accounts of key events in TwentiethCentury and Twenty-First Century Jewish history andthe history of the State of Israel. The images andsounds are so moving, yet none of us have them to

show our children. They are being deprived the primaryhistorical artifacts of the events which have led up totoday’s Israel. We are denying them the power of themoments which have been captured on film. These im-ages are moving. We have denied our children the mov-ing experiences that we who are older have experiencedfirst hand.

In the 1950’s, I recall going into every Jewish home inLos Angeles and seeing the set of encyclopedias sold atthe local Ralph’s grocery stores on the shelves. With thefirst volume either free or only for $1, the purchase ofthis encyclopedia was seen as an easy way of bringing“culture” and knowledge into the home. I can foreseea DVD series of film of the events of modern Jewishand Israeli history becoming as omnipresent in Jewishhomes today as the cheap encylopedias were 50 yearsago. I believe that an affordable DVD series wouldbring the power of history into our Jewish homes. Ourchildren never experienced David Ben Gurion, GoldaMeir, or Moshe Dayan. A DVD series would bringhome the reality of the history of Israel in a powerfullymeaningful and effective way.

Highlighting one of the DVD’s should be Netanyahu’sspeech for our children to witness firsthand. His wordsrepresent a call to action. We are not the ones to beashamed. The ones who doubt our authenticity as apeople with a right to Israel as our homeland are theones who should experience the shame. Netanyahu hita home run with this speech, a speech we should replayand remember long into the future.•

Did you ever stop to imagine what life was like inside of Noah's ark? There were three floors; themiddle floor was filled with a collection of the world's animals wild, domestic, and otherwise. Birdsand critters of all shapes and sizes, vermin and an endless potpourri of creepy crawlers whose

pesky descendants bear witness to their survival during that tempestuous period.

Then there was a floor of refuse. There was no recycling center, and no sewage system that I am aware of.

The humans had the top floor. Cramped in an inescapable living space was Noach, his three sons, their wivesand one mother-in-law. I think the rest of the scenario can play clearly in our minds. Surely, it was far from easy. What intrigues are the detailed architectural commands that Hashem gave Noach. Hashem details measurementsand design for an ark that took 120 years to build! Why? Are there lessons to be learned from the design of thedesign of the ark? After all, Hashem promised that there will be no more floods. If there are no more floods, thenthere need not be any more arks. So what difference does it make how it was built. Obviously, there are inherentlessons we can learn from the design of the ark. Let's look at one.

Noach is told to build a window. It seems practical enough; after all sitting for an entire year can get awfully stuffy. So Noach is commanded to build a window for breathing room. It is a little troubling. Does Noach need a commandto add something so simple as a window? Does it make a difference whether or not he had a window? Did thatcommand have to be incorporated into the heavenly plans for an ark that would endure the ravaging flood?

A renowned Rosh Yeshiva, tragically lost his son to a debilitating disease at the prime of his life. Not long married, the son left a widow and a young child. The Rosh Yeshiva and his Rebbitzin were devastated at the loss and theshiva period was a most difficult time.

One of the hundreds of visitors was the Bluzhever Rebbe, Rabbi Yisrael Spira, whose entire family was wipedout during the Holocaust. He sat quietly, taking in the pain of the bereaved family. Finally, when it was time to saysomething, Rabbi Spira turned to the Rosh Yeshiva and spoke. "Your loss is terrible, but at least your son will havea living remnant, his child. He will also have a resting place and stone where the family can visit. I do not evenknow where any of my children who were killed by the Nazis are buried." Then he added, "yet somehow Hashemhas given me the strength to rebuild my family and life." Those words truly helped console the Rosh Yeshiva.

Sometimes when we are locked in our little boxes, we, too, need a window. When we think our world is crumblingand that we are doomed to a fate that is too difficult to bear, Hashem tells us to make a window. Sometimes, in ourfrustrations we have to look across the globe, or even across the river to know that despite our difficulties, othersmust endure a more difficult fate. And when we realize that they can endure, whether it is an Og holding on theback of the ark, or struggling with those lost amongst the ruins, we can remember that life inside the ark is not sobad after all. •

One of the interpretations of the Flood is that itrepresents the difficulties of life. We are sweptby the swirling waters of anxiety, of the rat race,

of the daily struggle. How can we prevent our sensitivity andhumanity from being swept away?

Another variety of these swirling waters are the cultural cur-rents of the modern world which seek to sweep away our Jewishdimension. "Why be different?" they murmur. "Just do thesame as everyone else..." Once again, what power do we haveto resist these forces?

Deep in the heart of every Jew there is hidden a great love TheSong of Songs (8:7) tells us that "many waters cannot quenchlove." Deep in the heart of every Jew there is hidden a greatlove. This love always remains, despite the worries and troubles, despite cultural change. It is through our love for G-d, for theinfinite freedom which our bond with G-d can grant us, that wecan withstand the force of the "flood waters." Through Jewishlife we reveal this love and enable it to give inspiration andmeaning to our lives.

The Friday night table, candles, kiddush, speaking words ofTorah, singing Shabbat table songs, prayer and observance ofother laws of Judaism help us overcome the Flood and enjoyevery step in an ever new world. •

Good deeds deserve good dividends, but thereis one deed mentioned in this week's portionthat is veiled in anonymity. However, its divi-

dends lasted so forcefully that the impact was realized al-most 500 years later.

The Torah tells us about a war that took place. Avram'snephew Lot was captured. The Torah tells us "Then therecame the fugitive and told Abram, the Ivri, who dwelt in the plainsof Mamre…" (Genesis 14:13) It obscures the name of therefugee and does not even directly state his message. Thenext verse, in a seemingly disjointed manner, tells us, "andAbram heard that his kinsman was taken captive, he armed hisdisciples who had been born in his house -- three hundred and eight-een -- and he pursued them as far as Dan" (ibid v.14).TheMedrash tells us that the refugee was Og, a giant of a manwho escaped an attack on his fellow giants. He informedAvram that his nephew was alive, albeit taken prisonerwith malevolent intent. He figured that Avram would tryto liberate Lot and be killed in battle. Og would thenmarry Sora. (Perhaps that is the reason that the Torahseems to separate what Avram heard from what therefugee told.) For this piece of disguised information, Ogreceives a seemingly disproportionate reward. He isgranted not only longevity, as he lived until the final daysof the Jews’ sojourn through the desert, but also the im-pact of his deed was so potent that Moshe was afraid toattack him before entering the Land of Canaan! Imagine.Og lived for 470 years after the deed, and then Moshe hadto be reassured that he need not fear his merits!

Rabbi Berel Zisman, one of the few remaining from hisillustrious family of prominent Lubavitch Chasidim spenta portion of World War II in a concentration camp in Mu-nich. After the war, he was allowed entry to the UnitedStates, but had to wait in the town of Bremerhaven forsix weeks. During that time he decided to travel to Bergen-Belsen the notorious concentration camp which was trans-formed to a displaced person camp to visit a cousin whowas there. Dozens of inmates came over to him withnames of loved ones scattered across the free plains ofthe USA. They wanted to get them messages. Berel tooktheir messages. To Sam Finkel from Abraham Gorecki: "Iam alive and recuperating. Please try to guarantee employ-ment to allow me to enter the US." And so on. One cardwas for Jacob Kamenecki from a niece from Minsk.“Please be aware that I survived the war and will be goingback to Minsk."

Armed with lists of names and some addresses, Berelarrived in the US where he became a student in the Lubav-

itch Yeshiva in Crown Heights. Knowing no English, upon his arrival he asked a cousin to address postcards. Each had a message written in Yiddish "My name is BerelZisman. I have just arrived from Europe - and have re-gards from…"He filled in the blanks and ended the briefnote on each card with, "for further information, I can becontacted at the Lubavitch Yeshiva, corner Bedford andDean in Crown Heights."

Rabbi Zisman does not really now how many people re-ceived his cards, but one person who lived in a basementapartment on Hewes Street definitely did. When RabbiJacob Kamenecki, one of the United States' leading sages, came to the Lubavitch yeshiva looking for Berel Zisman,a war refugee who had arrived at the yeshiva only a weekago, no one knew why.

Berel was called out of the study hall and met the elderlyman, filled him in on all the particulars about the statusof his relative, and returned to his place. When the youngman returned to his seat, he was shocked at the celebritytreatment he once again received. "You mean you don'tknow who that Rabbi was? He is the Rosh Yeshiva ofTorah Voda'ath!" Berel shuddered, feeling terrible that hemade the revered scholar visit him. A while later, he metthe Rosh Yeshiva and approached him. "Rebbe, please for-give me, I had no intention to make you come to me toget regards. Had I known who you were I would surelyhave gone to your home and given the information to youin person!”

Reb Yaakov was astounded. He refused to accept theapology. "Heaven forbid! Do you realize what kind of sol-ace I have hearing about the survival of my relative. Icame to you, not only to hear the news, but to thank you,in person, for delivering it!"

Imagine. Avram was nearly 80 years old, he had no de-scendants, and the only link to the house of his father'sfamily -- at least documented as a disciple of Avram'sphilosophies -- was Lot. Now even the whereabouts andfuture of that man were unknown. And when Og deliv-ered the news of his whereabouts, perhaps Avram's hopefor the future was rekindled. Perhaps his gratitude towardOg abounded. And though Og spoke one thing, andAvram heard another, the reward for the impact onAvram's peace of mind was amazingly powerful.

We often make light of actions and ramifications. TheTorah tells us this week, in a saga that ends five books andsome four hundred years later, that small tidings travel avery long distance. •

Everybody makes jokes about Noah andhis Ark. Bill Cosby has a whole routine onthe subject (which I must confess is un-

cannily faithful to our commentaries' understanding). Then there's the one about Noah being the first stockmarket manipulator in history -- he floated a companywhile the whole world was in liquidation!

The Rebbe saw Noah in a far more serious light. Noahwas a survivor.

Noah was saved from the deluge of destruction thatengulfed his world and his greatest contribution is thathe set out to rebuild that world. We don't read abouthim sitting down and crying or wringing his hands indespair, although I'm sure he had his moments. The crit-ical thing the Bible records is that after Noah emergedfrom his floating bunker he began the task of rebuildinga shattered world from scratch. He got busy and pickedup the pieces and, slowly but surely, society was regen-erated.

Only one generation ago a great flood swept over ourworld. The Nazi plan was for a Final Solution. EveryJew on earth was earmarked for destruction and theNazis were already planning their Museum of the Ex-tinct Jewish Race. Not one Jew was meant to survive. So even those of us born after the war are also sur-vivors. Even a Jewish child born this morning is a sur-vivor -- because according to Hitler's plan, whichtragically nearly succeeded, he or she was not meant tolive.

This means that each of us, like Noah, has a moralduty to rebuild the Jewish world.

When I was growing up in Brooklyn, I prayed in asmall shul in Crown Heights where every other man atthe morning minyan (prayer quorum) bore a holy num-ber on his arm. They were concentration camp inmatesand the Germans tattooed those numbers onto theirarms. Sadly, today, the ranks of those individuals havebeen greatly diminished. Every time one of them wouldroll up his shirt sleeve to put on tefillin, the number wasrevealed. They seemed to hardly notice it, as if it wasnothing special, but to me they were heroes. Not onlyfor surviving the hells of Auschwitz or Dachau but forkeeping their faith intact, for still coming to shul, prayingto G-d, wearing His tefillin.

Today as I am older and more sensitive to the feelingsof fathers and children, of family and friends, those menhave gone up much more in my estimation. They havebecome superheroes. After all they went through, to beable to live normal lives again, to marry or remarry, tobring children into this world, to carry on life, busi-nesses, relationships, are mind boggling achievements.

My own father was not in the camps but he is the onlysurvivor of his entire family from Poland. Some yearsago, he recorded his story and recently it was publishedin book form -- From Shedlitz to Safety: a Young Jew'sJourney of Survival. We, his children, never knew halfof what he went through. When I imagine him sittingas a teenage refugee in Shanghai, China and discoveringthat his entire family was wiped out and that he was leftall alone in the world, I go numb. How did he continue? How did he stay sane? How did he keep his faith? ThankG-d he did and he started a family all over again, other-wise I wouldn't be here to write these lines. My own fa-ther has become a superhero to me.

Says the Rebbe, we all have that same responsibility --because we are all survivors.

Who will bring Jewish children into the world if notyou? Who will study Torah if not you? Who will keepShabbat? Who will keep the Jewish school afloat? Whowill rebuild the Jewish world if not you and I and eachand every one of us?

In the smaller country communities of South Africa, where I make my home, there are still small bands ofdedicated Jews who come together in someone's hometo make a minyan, or who serve as an ad hoc chevrakadisha to bury the Jewish dead according to our tradi-tion. These are not rabbis, cantors or cheder teachers. They are ordinary people. In the big city they wouldprobably not be nearly as involved, but in their smalltown they know that if they don't do it nobody will.

We need that same conviction wherever we are.

Thank G-d for His mercies in that our world is, to alarge degree, being rebuilt. Miraculously, the great cen-ters of Jewish learning are flourishing today once more. But far too many of our brothers and sisters are stilloutside the circle. Every one of us needs to participate. We are all Noahs. Let us rebuild our world. •

Rabbi Yossy Goldman was born in Brooklyn, New York to a distinguished Chabad family. In 1976 he was sent by the Lubavitcher Rebbe as shliach to serve the Jewish community of Johannesburg, South Africa.

He is Senior Rabbi of the Sydenham Highlands North Shul since 1986, and president of the South African Rabbinical Association

Garments

Page 29: Community Links Issue 141

“The righteous emulate their Creator,” say our sages.

If you want to know how to behave in a given situ-ation, see what G-d does.

On the whole, G-d chooses to run His world in accor-dance with a series of unchanging (and thus predictable)behavior patterns—what we call “the laws of nature.” Itwould be just as “easy” for Him to rain down manna fromheaven as to cause grain to grow and flour and water tobake into bread; but with the exception of one forty-yearperiod in our history, G-d has consistently chosen to nour-ish us via natural bread from the earth rather than miraclebread from the heavens.

So we, too, manage our lives in accordance with the rulesof nature. While we believe with complete faith that G-dis the sole provider of life and sustenance, we labor toconstruct the natural vehicles through which His provi-dence may flow. We know that to be nourished by a pieceof bread supposedly produced by human hands is no lessa “miracle” than to be nourished by “bread” falling fromthe heavens; nevertheless, we do not sit around waitingfor manna to rain down upon us, but devote hours, energyand talent—resources that could have been devoted to“holier,” more spiritual pursuits—to plowing, sowing, milling, kneading and baking, or to earning the money topay others to produce our bread.

In the 12th chapter of Genesis, we find our model forthis approach to life in the behavior of the first Jew, Abra-ham. G-d had commanded Abraham to take up residencein the Holy Land; but when shortly thereafter a famineswept through the land, Abraham journeyed to Egypt, where there was bread to be had. Approaching Egypt, aland notorious for its depravity, Abraham realizes that heis in mortal danger on account of the beauty of his wife,Sarah, and he tells her to say that she is his sister, lest hebe killed by an Egyptian coveting her beauty.

The famine in the Holy Land and Abraham’s travails inEgypt are counted among the “Ten Tests” which estab-lished the depth and invincibility of his faith in G-d. Atfirst glance, however, it would seem that Abraham “failed”these tests: he did not stay in the Holy Land, trusting thatG-d would provide for him even under conditions offamine; he did not assume that if G-d desired that he live,no lust-maddened Egyptian could take his life.

In truth, however, a disavowal of the natural tools oflife does not imply a greater faith in G-d. Indeed, to doso is to go against the divine desire that we live within the

natural world as G-d’s “partners in creation.” The true testof faith lies in how a person regards his natural activities.Does he consider them the source of his achievements?Or does he recognize that they are merely “garments”within which G-d enclothes and disguises His essentiallysupra-natural sustenance of our lives?

Abraham’s faith did not prevent him from going toEgypt when the natural sources of nourishment ceasedto function in the Holy Land, or from resorting to con-nivance and deceit to ensure his safety when his life wasthreatened. Indeed, the fact that he could take these ac-tions and experience their apparent success in bringinghim material gain and, at the same time, relate to G-d asthe sole source of his safety and enrichment, was the ul-timate proof of his faith in G-d.

Joseph

But G-d, on occasion, does perform “miracles”—eventsin which the cloak of consistency and predictability isswept away and His involvement in our lives stands de-nuded from the garments of nature. In this, too, we areenjoined to emulate our Creator: there are occasions inour lives that call for a “miraculous” response, for a modeof behavior that utterly disregards the dictates of natureand convention.

These, however, are the exception rather than the rule,to be employed under exceptional circumstances in ourlives, or by exceptional individuals whose entire lives em-ulate the miraculous dimension of G-d’s relationship withour reality.

Such an individual was Abraham’s great-grandson,Joseph. When Joseph was incarcerated in an Egyptianprison and did a good turn for a fellow prisoner, the chiefbutler of Pharaoh, he availed himself of the opportunityto request of him:

In three days’ time, Pharaoh will lift up your head andrestore you to your station.... But remember me when yoursituation is improved. Pray, do me a kindness and makemention of me to Pharaoh, and have me taken out fromthis house

Joseph, however, is criticized for his behavior; indeed,he is punished for placing his trust in man rather than re-lying solely on G-d. “The chief butler did not rememberJoseph, but forgot him,” and he was left to languish fortwo more years in Pharaoh’s dungeon.

What for Abraham was desirable behavior and a demon-stration of his faith in G-d, was a breach of faith for

Joseph. For Joseph belonged to that select group of righteous individuals whose mission in life is to emulate theirCreator in the miraculous, rather than the natural, plane of His relationship with His creation.

The Many and the Few

These two approaches to life were personified by two great Talmudic sages— Rabbi Ishmael and Rabbi Shimon barYochai. In the words of the Talmud:

It is written: “And you shall gather your grain.” What does this come to teach us? But since it says, “This book of Torahshall not cease from your mouth [and you shall study it day and night],” I would have thought that one must take these wordsliterally; comes the verse to teach us, “you shall gather your grain”—conduct yourself also in the ways of the world. Theseare the words of Rabbi Ishmael.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai said: If a person plows in the plowing season, sows in the sowing season, reaps in thereaping season, threshes in the threshing season, and winnows when there is wind, what shall become of the Torah? But when Israel does the will of the Almighty, their work is done by others, as it is written, “And strangers will standand graze your sheep...”

The Talmud concludes: “Many did like Rabbi Ishmael, and succeeded; like Rabbi Shimon, and did not succeed.”

In every generation, a few elect “Josephs” rise to a state of utter aloofness from the ways and cares of the materialworld, exemplifying the truth that, in essence, there is literally “none else besides Him.” But for the vast majority ofus, the path through life is the path blazed by Abraham: a path in which G-d clothes His involvement in our lives inthe garments of nature and we employ the resources and norms of our physical existence as the implements of ourrelationship with Him. •
