Course Description

Technology continues to be incorporated into all business sectors in today’s global economy.To compete for employment and to succeed in job roles, college graduates need to possessbasic computer literacy skills. The course is taught using Microsoft Office software, e-texts andcomputer based training/assessment software. Upon successful completion of this course,students will have covered components and related tasks and skills needed to prepare for theMOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) exam for Microsoft Excel if the student chooses to do so.

Course Learning Outcomes The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:

1. Manage the use of time and resources to complete tasks and attain goals2. Plan, create and test spreadsheets for a variety of business needs; i.e. cash flow

analysis, budgeting, cost estimating, inventory management and financial reporting3. Analyze and interpret data for problem-solving and decision-making processes4. Create and apply graphical representations of data for business presentations

5. Enter, maintain, and retrieve related data in a database format6. Apply their learned skills and knowledge to new business situations

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:

1. Make an appointment to meet with the course leader for counseling about your PLARdecision. Contact receptionist at the School of Business for an appointment.

2. Complete application form for PLAR and pay fee to the Registrar’s Office before thecourse begins or by the end of the first week of classes. The Registrar’s Office willreview and forward your application for PLAR to the School of Business. You will becontacted to set a date for your PLAR assessment.

3. You will come to the scheduled appointment and demonstrate the course required skills(Excel and Access) through a skills based assessment on the computer and/or writtenformat.

4. You will be notified as to whether or not you achieved a successful grade of 70% on thePLAR at the end of the assessment.

MyITlab for GO! with Microsoft Office 2010Stand Alone Access Card - 2 year access to Myitlab and Electronic Text

Students must have valid access or purchase MyITLab and E-text for registration during the first

class (Week 1).

SUPPLIES to bring to Lectures:USB Memory Stick (Min. 1 GB recommended)Ear Phones/Headset 

Evaluation and Grading System

Students are required to attempt all the tests. Students who are absent from doing the test withvalid reasons should request a make-up test. All the test make-up requests should beaccompanied with a professional document such as a doctor’s note and the request should besubmitted within 48 hours following the absence; either by e-mail or voice mail to the professor.

In order to pass the course, a student must achieve an overall course grade of at least50% or better and minimum 50% on the Excel Final Test. In order to prepare to write theOPTIONAL Microsoft Office Specialist exam (MOS) for Microsoft Excel, a student should have a

minimum overall grade of 80%. This course covers components and related tasks and skills of the MOS exam for Excel.

Projects and Case problems must be submitted according to your professor’s instructions on or before the due date. Late assignments will receive a 20% grade penalty per day for beinglate; Weekends and holidays are included.

In consultation with the Chair or Dean, a faculty member or instructor may administer additionalor alternative evaluations to fully assess the capability of a student.

When writing a test or examination, students must put their official photo-ID cards in full view for review by the invigilator. Students who do not have official photo-ID will be permitted to write theexamination with a substitute photo-ID, but they will be required to produce photo-ID at theprogram or department office within 24 hours or the next business day following theexamination, or else the examination results will be void.

Dictionaries may be used in tests and examinations, or in portions of tests and examinations, aslong as they are non-electronic (not capable of storing information) and hard copy (reviewed bythe invigilator to ensure notes are not incorporated that would affect test or examinationintegrity).
