Company Structure

The two companies Nanco and Sri Lanka Institute of

Nanotechnology (SLINTEC) were formed in 2008.

NANCO was fully funded by the Government of Sri Lanka

(“GoSL”) through the NSF.

SLINTEC was formed as the research and development arm

and was set up as a public-private partnership. The initial

capital was expected to be sufficient to cover three years

operations.

Further to cabinet approval the above two companies were

merged effective March 31, 2011 and is now known as the Sri

Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (“SLINTEC”).

Our Achievements

• SLINTEC has filed 11 patents 9 of which are in the

US patent office and 2 in Sri Lankan patent office.

(3 of the international patents have been granted)

• 3 patents were sold to Nagarjuna Corporation

Limited in India for $2.25mn. (received $1 mn to

date)

• Created an endowment fund and raised Rs

25mn (~$ 200,000) from platinum donor in

September 2013

• Signed a contract with Laugfs Gas to build a

pilot plant to check the feasibility of converting

Ilmenite to Titanium Dioxide

• Sold a patent for Rs 25mn (~$200,000) with a

local party as an outcome of research.

• Achieved a successful outcome for research

contract with Textured Jersey. Signed agreement

to generate a royalty revenue on commissioning

plant

• Currently there are in excess of 48 clients who are

at various stages of discussion

• Attracted 8 PhD qualified Sri Lankan scientists to

relocate (Two of these staff members have moved

on to lead the research efforts at John Keells and

Hemas)

• Significant contribution to changing the research

landscape in the country through many of the awareness

programs carried out by SLINTEC

• Attracting service oriented companies to consider a

diversification strategy – i.e. John Keells, Aitken Spence

• Provided on the ground training for graduates moving on

for higher education. Thus far we have seen 17 staff

members move on to obtain PhD’s from highly recognized

Universities in the West.

• 6 students have carried out their PhD studies while

attached to SLINTEC (University/Granting body

collaboration)

• Attracted interest of leading Sri Lanka scientist living

overseas to assist SLINTEC (i.e. Prof. Ravi, Prof A.P.,

Prof. Chandra and Prof. Kumar)

• Attracting global attention by way of highlighting our

international patents in highly recognized patent portals

• Enabled the creation of partnership between the

inventor’s commission, Lankan Angel Network and

SLINTEC to support science and engineering talent in

the country to establish their own companies.

• Working closely with pharmaceutical cluster to establish a

meaningful presence at the Park
