Down to Earth - 2015 envisages bringing some of the most distinguished scientists, industry experts and scholars, government and administrative eco- entrepreneurs who have pioneered successful alternative communities, and also students from the top educational institutions together. The focus is to unearth deeper aspects of the problem of environment crisis and arrive at an understanding of a well-rounded doable solution that goes beyond temporary, superficial patchwork adjustments.

The Premise

The seeds of industrialization that were sown in the soils of Britain in the late 18th and 19th centuries originated from mankind’s attempts to live a more comfortable life by harnessing the resources of nature. It was characterized by the use of machinery, growth of factories and mass production of manufactured goods. However, it has taken us just about a century to see nononsense signposts that we are driving up the wrong way.

Modern civilization has created a world which every year is losing 24 billion tons of top soil, destroying 44 million acres of forests, creating 15 million acres of new deserts, pumping an untold quantity of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, over-heating the earth and transforming it into a virtual pressure-cooker which could explode any time. Ecological issues are assuming proportions, far too significant to be hushed and swept under the carpet, for posterity.

The famous words of Galadriel from The Lord of the Rings puts the problem into perspective: “The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was, is lost, for none now live who remember it.”

Adopting the threefold objectives of Communication, Clarification and Consensus, the conference is intended to provide a 360-degree learning experience for everyone .

• Inculcating Environmental accountability - What ails humanity and its leadership?

• How does an Indian stand poised to face this crisis , vis-a-vis the rest of the world?

• Answering the next generation - The legacy that we are handing over

• Bringing in climate justice through more earthy endeavors and reorganisation

• Economy and Environment in the 21st Centuary

INTRODUCTION

> Culturally Engineered Economies – 2015 would bring together students, entrepreneurs and leaders from the field of business, education, environment, governments and faith-based groups with the aim of promoting ethical and community oriented business practices through in-depth discussions and presentations. >

The Premise

> > Over the last few decades, businesses and economies have undergone phenomenal changes resulting in new career opportunities and better living standards. But with this growth also came myriad challenges affecting us individually, socially and environmentally. > > While business and industries are making rapid progress, challenges like stress, lack of personal satisfaction, environmental pollution, self-centered leadership and insensitive growth appears to curtail the true benefits of development. Holistic and organic growth has stagnated. The growth benefits of innovation by enterprises are yet to reach the lower stratum of the society. > > This makes a re-assessment of the goal of business activity an imperative. What is the role and ideal of a business leader? Does our economy & concomitant business action need a new culture? Can ancient wisdom of great civilizations that evinced values of integrity, compassion and service have pointers, if not solutions, to the modern business’ ethical challenges? > > One thousand participants who are expected to attend this conference would interface with brilliant minds across different fields and industry experts to discuss the need for a culturally and ethically driven business beyond the ‘Revenue minus Cost= Profit’ model. > > • Economic Growth - Harmonising personal and collective progress > > • When Enough is Enough - The ethical side of wealth creation > > • Understanding organizational ethics and its role in solving the problems of society > > • The Yoga of Business - A traditional view of responsibility > > • Can spiritual values contribute to organizational performance?
