ICICI Bank Ltd is a major banking and financial services organization inIndia. The Bank is the second largest bank in India and the largest privatesector bank in India by market capitalization. They are a publicly held

banking company engaged in providing a wide range of banking andfinancial services including commercial banking and treasury operations.The Bank and their subsidiaries offers a wide range of banking andfinancial services including commercial banking, retail banking, projectand corporate finance, working capital finance, insurance, venture capitaland private equity, investment banking, broking and treasury products andservices. They offer through a variety of delivery channels and throughtheir specialised subsidiaries in the areas of investment banking, life andnon-life insurance, venture capital and asset management. The Bank hasa network of 2,035 branches and about 5,518 ATMs in India and presencein 18 countries. They have subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Russiaand Canada, branches in United States, Singapore, Bahrain, Hong Kong,Sri Lanka, Qatar and Dubai International Finance Centre andrepresentative offices in United Arab Emirates, China, South Africa,Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. Our UK subsidiary hasestablished branches in Belgium and Germany. The Bank's equity sharesare listed in India on Bombay Stock Exchange and the National StockExchange of India Limited and their American Depositary Receipts(ADRs) are listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The Banks is the first

Indian Bank listed on New York Stock Exchange. ICICI Bank Ltd wasincorporated in the year 1994 as a part of the ICICI group with the nameICICI Banking Corporation Ltd. The initial equity capital was 75.0% byICICI and 25.0% by SCICI Ltd, a diversified finance and shipping financelender of which ICICI owned 19.9% at December 1996. Pursuant to themerger of SCICI into ICICI, ICICI Bank became a wholly-owned subsidiaryof ICICI. In September 10, 1999, the name of the Bank was changed fromICICI Banking Corporation Ltd to ICICI Bank Ltd In March 10, 2001, ICICIBank acquired Bank of Madura, an old private sector bank, in an all-stockmerger. ICICI Ltd along with their wholly owned retail finance subsidiaries,namely ICICI Capital Services Ltd and ICICI Personal Financial ServicesLtd amalgamated with the Bank with effect from May 3, 2002. In May2003, the bank acquired the entire paid-up capital of Transamerica AppleDistribution Finance Pvt Ltd (now known as ICICI Distribution Finance PvtLtd) which primarily engaged in financing in the two-wheeler segment. InSeptember 12, 2003, the Bank incorporated ICICI Bank Canada as a

100% subsidiary company. In May 2005, the Bank acquired the entirepaid-up capital of Investitsionno-Kreditny Bank, a Russian bank with theirregistered office in Balabanovo in the Kaluga region and a branch inMoscow. Thus, IKB became a subsidiary of Bank with effect from May 19,

2005. In August 2005, the Bank acquired additional 6% of the equityshare capital of Prudential ICICI Asset Management Company Ltd andPrudential ICICI Trust Ltd from Prudential Corporation Holdings Ltd andthus these two companies became the subsidiaries of the Bank. Duringthe year 2006-07, ICICI Bank Canada incorporated ICICI HealthManagement Inc as a subsidiary company. In April 2007, Sangli Bank Ltdmerged with the Bank with effect from April 19, 2007. In 2007 June, theBank entered into an agreement with networking solutions provider GTLLtd to lease out their call centre facility at Mahape worth of around Rs 100crore for a period of 25 years. During the year 2007-08, the Bank

increased their branches & extension counter from 755 Nos to 1,262 Nos,including the addition of about 200 branches through the merger of SangliBank. They increased their ATM network from 3,271 ATMs to 3,881

ATMs. They launched mobile banking service enabling a wide range ofbanking transactions using the mobile phone. During the year 2008-09,the Bank increased their branches & extension counter from 1,262 Nos to1,419 Nos. They also received licenses for 580 additional branches fromRBI. They increased their ATM network to 4,713 ATMs from 3,881 ATMs.In April 22, 2009, ICICI Prudential Pension Funds Management Company

Ltd was incorporated as a subsidiary company of ICICI Prudential LifeInsurance Company Ltd. During the year 2009-10, the Bank increasedtheir branches & extension counter from 1,419 Nos to 1,707 Nos. Theyalso increased their ATM network from 4,713 ATMs to 5,219 ATMs. ICICIWealth Management Inc., a subsidiary of ICICI Bank Canada, has beendissolved effective December 31, 2009. In January 2010, the Bank andFirst Data, a company engaged in electronic commerce and paymentservices, formed a merchant acquiring alliance and a new entity namedICICI Merchant Services, 81% owned by First Data, was formed, whichacquired ICICI Bank's merchant acquiring operations for a total

consideration of Rs. 3,744 million. In May 2010, the Bank approved thescheme of amalgamation of Bank of Rajasthan Ltd with the Bank throughshare-swap in a non-cash deal that values the Bank of Rajasthan at aboutRs 3,000 crore. Each 118 shares of Bank of Rajasthan will be convertedinto 25 shares of ICICI Bank Ltd. In August 2010, as per the scheme ofamalgamation, Bank of Rajasthan was amalgamated with the Bank with

effect from the close of business on 12 August 2010. The merger of Bankof Rajasthan added over 450 branches to the network. Including these,their branch network increased from 1,707 branches at March 31, 2010 to2,529 branches at March 31, 2011. They also increased their ATM

network from 5,219 ATMs at March 31, 2010 to 6,055 ATMs at March 31,2011.

ICICI Bankis an Indian multinationalbankandfinancial servicescompany headquartered inMumbai.

Based on 2013 information, it is the second largest bank in Indiaby assets and third largest bymarket

capitalisation.It offers a wide range of banking products and financial servicesto corporate andretail

customersthrough a variety of delivery channels and through its specialised subsidiaries in the areas

ofinvestment banking,lifeandnon-life insurance,venture capitalandasset management.The Bank has

a network of 3,539 branches and 11,162[2][3]ATM's in India, and has a presence in 19 countries.[4][5]

ICICI Bank is one of theBig Four banksof India, along withState Bank of India,Punjab National

BankandBank of Baroda.The bank has subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Russia, and Canada;

branches in United States, Singapore, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Qatar and Dubai International

FinanceCentre; and representative offices in United Arab Emirates, China, South Africa, Bangladesh,

Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. The company's UK subsidiary has established branches in Belgium

and Germany.[6]

In March 2013,Operation Red Spidershowing high-ranking officials and some employees of ICICI Bank

involved inmoney laundering.After agovernmentinquiry, ICICI Bank suspended 18 employees and

Corporate history[edit]

ICICI Bank was established by the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India, an Indian

financial institution, as a wholly owned subsidiary in 1955. The parent company was formed in 1955 as a

joint-venture of theWorld Bank,India's public-sector banks and public-sector insurance companies to

provide project financing to Indian industry.[12][13]The bank was initially known as the Industrial Credit and

Investment Corporation of India Bank, before it changed its name to the abbreviated ICICI Bank. The

parent company was later merged with the bank.

ICICI Bank launched internet banking operations in 1998.[14]

ICICI's shareholding in ICICI Bank was reduced to 46 percent, through a public offering of shares in India

in 1998, followed by an equity offering in the form ofAmerican Depositary Receiptson theNYSEin 2000.

ICICI Bank acquired the Bank of Madura Limitedin an all-stock deal in 2001 and sold additional stakes to

institutional investors during 2001-02.

In the 1990s, ICICI transformed its business from a development financial institution offering only projectfinance to a diversified financial services group, offering a wide variety of products and services, both

directly and through a number of subsidiaries and affiliates like ICICI Bank. In 1999, ICICI become the

first Indian company and the first bank or financial institution from non-Japan Asia to be listed on the

NYSE.[15]

In 2000, ICICI Bank became the first Indian bank to list on the New York Stock Exchange with its five

million American depository shares issue generating a demand book 13 times the offer size.

In October 2001, the Boards of Directors of ICICI and ICICI Bank approved the merger of ICICI and two

of its wholly owned retail finance subsidiaries, ICICI Personal Financial Services Limited and ICICI Capital

Services Limited, with ICICI Bank. The merger was approved by shareholders of ICICI and ICICI Bank in

January 2002, by theHigh Court of Gujaratat Ahmedabad in March 2002 and by the High Court of

Judicature at Mumbai and the Reserve Bankof India in April 2002.[16]

In 2008, following the2008 financial crisis,customers rushed to ICICI ATMs and branches in some

locations due to rumours of adverse financial position of ICICI Bank. The Reserve Bank of India issued a

North Eastern Development Finance Corporation (NEDFI) was promoted by national level financial

in the North Eastern states of India. NEDFI is the premier financial and development institution for the

Asset Reconstruction Company India Limited

Following the enactment of the Securitisation Act in 2002, ICICI Bank together with other institutions, set

up Asset Reconstruction Company India Limited (ARCIL) in 2003, to create a facilitative environment for

the resolution of distressed debt in India. ARCIL was established to acquire non performing assets

(NPAs) from financial institutions and banks with a view to enhance the management of these assets and

help in the maximisation of recovery. This would relieve institutions and banks from the burden of

pursuing NPAs, and allow them to focus on core banking activities .[26][27]

Credit Information Bureau of India Limited

ICICI Bank has also helped in setting up Credit Information Bureau of India Limited (CIBIL), Indias first

national credit bureau in 2000. CIBIL provides a repository of information (which contains the credit

history of commercial and consumer borrowers) to its members in the form of credit information reports.

iWish is a fun and flexible way to encourage savings among youth for fulfilling aspirations. Unlike a

traditionalrecurring deposit,iWish allows customers to save varying amounts of money at any time of

their choice. Customers can create several goals and track their progress on an easy-to-use online

interface. They can also share their wishes onFacebookand let their friends and family be a part of their

dreams by contributing to their account from any bank account. There will be no penalties if a customer

misses his monthly contribution to the recurring deposit. The minimum duration is six months and a

customer can open this account starting with 500.[31]

The key features of iWish are:

Flexibility:Flexible recurring deposit allows a customer to deposit any amount at any point of time.

Customers also have an option of depositing money by giving a standing instruction.

Better returns:Customers can earn recurring deposit interest rates on their iWish account while

Vehicle Finance

As an initiative towards more environment friendly way of life, Auto loans offer 50% waiver on processing

Carbon Footprint Calculator[edit]

Inputs include region, user input of the distance traveled in a particular medium of transport daily,

electricity consumed per month and LPG cylinder/piped natural gas used per month. It calculates the net

carbon footprint to create awareness and sensitize people about the environment.It also shows the

world's and India's average carbon footprint.[33][34]

Controversies[edit]

Inhuman debt recovery methods[edit]

A few years after its rise to prominence in the banking sector, ICICI bank faced allegations on the

recovery methods it used against loan payment defaulters. A number of cases were filed against the bank

and its employees for using "brutal measures" to recover the money. Most of the allegations were that the

bank was using goons to recover the credit card payments and that these "recovery agents" exhibited

inappropriate and in some cases, inhuman behavior. Incidents were reported wherein the defaulters were

put to "public shame" by the recovery agents.The bank also faced allegations of inappropriate behavior in recovering its loans. These allegations

started initially when the "recovery agents" and bank employees started threatening the defaulters. In

some cases, notes written by the bank's employees asking the defaulters to "sell everything in the house

including family members", were found. Such charges faced by the bank rose to a peak when suicide

cases were reported wherein the suicide notes spoke of the Bank's recovery methods as the cause of the

suicide. This led to a lot of legal battles and the bank paying huge compensations.

Money laundering allegations

ICICI Bank was one of the leading Indian banks accused of blatant money launderingthrough violation of

RBI guidelines in the famous CobraPost[88]sting operation which shook up Indian banking industry during

AprilMay 2013.[89]

On 14 March 2013 the online magazine Cobrapost released video footage from Operation Red

Spidershowing high-ranking officials and some employees of ICICI Bank agreeing to convert black

money into white, an act in violation ofMoney Laundering Control Act.TheGovernment of

IndiaandReserve Bank of Indiaordered an inquiry following theexpos.On 15 March 2013, ICICI Bank

suspended 18 employees, pending inquiry.[7][8][9]On 11 April 2013 Deputy Governor ofRBI,H R Khan

reportedly told that the central bank is initiating action against ICICI Bank in connexion with allegations

of money laundering.
