Main question: What are the advantages of a learning environment that is diverse
in culture?
Final conclusion about the main question:
1. It helps students to grow intellectually and artistically.
2. It promotes objectivity in students.
3. It naturally instils tolerance and promotes peace and progress.
4. It contributes towards the making of better human beings by bridging the gap between people, cultures, nations and religions.
Recommendation
We, at Vibgyor High, believe in a world beyond borders. The curriculum matrix in our school includes activities that promote multicultural education. If students at a young age get multicultural education, they are exposed to rich learning and cultivate opinions about various cultures in an appropriate way. This paves the way for bringing in a positive change, globally. It helps in building mutual understanding and accepting ideas from diverse sources, and also improves positive socialisation behaviour among children. Thus Vibgyor High realises the importance of teaching multiculturalism and diversity.
Comparison
We have compared our results with a school called Nehalennia SSG in Netherlands and Christ Church, in India and have arrived at the conclusion that multicultural schooling is beneficial as we learn immensely in the process.
Our Research Distillate
Our research results underline that “Education is the most powerful weapon
that you can use to change the world”. At Vibgyor High, Goregaon (W), the
religious and linguistic diversity of the city is visible both in the students and
in the faculty members. The school offers both national and international
board education. There are no specific religious instructions in the curriculum.
Even the prayer recited in the morning is beyond religion. We lay emphasis on
the overall intellectual, aesthetic, physical and cultural growth of the child.
This is possible due to the multicultural curriculum which is a carefully thought
out strategy to make our children's early years more yielding and fulfilling.
Similarities between Vibgyor High and Nehalennia SSG
The population of the town / area is very diverse
Both practise multicultural education in their schools and find it extremely beneficial.
The Netherlands counterpart is also receptive towards multiple religions and cultures, just like us.
Differences between Vibgyor High and Nehalennia SSG
At VIBGYOR High, Mumbai, the school brings in a rich cultural diversity in
its students and teachers, owing to the cosmopolitan nature of the city,
unlike Nehalennia SSG where the cultural diversity is relatively limited.
Similarities between Vibgyor High and Christ Church
Just like us, the students at Christ Church also receive multicultural
education. Both schools teach their students to respect all religions and
practise zero discrimination.
Differences between Vibgyor High and Christ Church
At Vibgyor High, there is no influence of any particular religion.
At Christ Church, though the school imparts multicultural
education, the majority of students belong to a certain religion.
ReflectionThe strategy that worked for us was the division of tasks, a process that was carried out according to the expertise and forte of each team member. This helped in clever planning of schedules and in timely uploading of the information. Seamless team work and sincere efforts by each of us made us meet our deadlines promptly.
What would be done differently?
To lend the project a different angle, the students could have interviewed people from 4 to 5 like minded schools and brought in a comparative result.
What did you learn about the topic?
Working on the topic “Multicultural School” made us understand that a multicultural
society helps in developing equal respect for multiple cultures. It minimises
intolerance and helps us to communicate better with each other. The project also
brought in a greater degree of open mindedness in us, making us more receptive
towards new ideas and understanding the perspectives of others.
