Asbestos.

Asbestos is still found today in many buildings built prior to 2000.

The term asbestos means ‘inextinguishable’. This relates to the evidence that the material doesn’t burn - one of the many reasons asbestos was widely used in building materials in the 1850s until the late 1990s. Alongside protecting against heat, asbestos offers insulation against heat and electricity and is durable against corrosion. As a result, asbestos was commonly used in products like ceiling tiles, pipe insulation, boilers, sprayed coating and garage roof sheets and is still commonly found in buildings built prior to 2000.

Every week, 20 tradespeople, on average, die from asbestos related diseases.

Exposure to asbestos is known to cause several serious diseases, some of which can be fatal. If products containing asbestos are disturbed, the tiny fibres are released into the air and when breathed in, they become trapped in the lungs and stay there for many years. Over time, these fibres accumulate and lead to serious health problems including: Asbestosis, Mesothelioma, Lung Cancer and Pleural Thickening. So it’s no surprise that asbestos was banned in the UK by 1999.

There are six different forms of asbestos, however the most frequently found are blue, brown and white asbestos, which can be found in countless building products. Due to the nature of the material and the fact it was frequently mixed with other materials containing cement or textured coating often the presence of asbestos is difficult to recognise.

Asbestos Services. Carymar has the ability and expertise to remove and dispose of licensed, notifiable licensed, notifiable non-licensed and non-licensed asbestos containing materials (ACMs).

The Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012 highlights that it is the responsibility of the duty holder in all non-domestic premises to ensure any asbestos containing materials (ACMs) that have the potential to be damaged or disturbed upon regular activity are located.

Asbestos Surveying. An asbestos survey is required to ensure compliance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 by identifying and assessing any asbestos that may be present. This is an explicit duty on the employer (in occupation) and/or property owner to manage the risks from asbestos in their premises.

An asbestos survey helps you to manage asbestos where possible. Asbestos should only be removed when found in poor condition or poses a threat - that is unless refurbishment or demolition is planned.

Carymar are able to conduct both asbestos types of survey:- Management Survey and Refurbishment/Demolition Survey. All our surveys follow HSG 264: The survey guide compliant, and all surveys come under our ISO9001 quality management system which ensures the highest standard of service and quality.

Management Survey This standard survey is undertaken to locate and describe as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect ACMs in the building, which may be damage or disturbed during normal occupancy or maintenance activities. Under regulation 4 of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, there is an explicit duty on owners and occupiers of non-domestic properties, who have maintenance and repair responsibilities, to have a management survey in place.

A management survey includes the removal of representative samples, which are then expertly analysed by a UKAS accredited laboratory to determine the presence of asbestos and if so, what type.

Refurbishment/Demolition Survey

This type of survey is required before any refurbishment or demolition work can be carried out.

A Refurbishment/Demolition survey is used to locate and describe, as far as reasonable practical, all ACMs in the area where refurbishment work will take place or in the whole building if demolition is planned.

Asbestos Management. As a follow up service to an asbestos survey report, Carymar are able to provide a comprehensive management plan that highlights future inspections and prioritises any remedial works required. Our exhaustive knowledge and experience within the asbestos industry means our fully trained surveyors are able to identify the potential risk by the presence of asbestos in the property and put practical procedures in place to control them.

As outlined by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, all duty holders with known or presumed asbestos within their premises must have an effective written asbestos management plan in place.

Asbestos Removal. Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) should always be removed or remediated if they are considered to be in a poor condition, vulnerable to accidental disturbance or prior to any major refurbishment or demolition works. ACMs can be located and identified in an asbestos survey report.

Ardagh Group Removal and licensed disposal of high level of AIB columns.

Working alongside a licensed asbestos scaffolding company who provided access to the columns, we were required to remove an dispose of high level AIB columns. The scaffold was used as the framework for the creation of the polythene enclosure which segregates the

asbestos removal work from the normal day to day operations within the glasswork. The client

was able to fully operate without hindrance to productivity or profit.

First Bus Removal and licensed disposal of AIB ceiling tiles within an operational bus workshop.

The project brief required Carymar to work in an operational facility with client specification to complete all works within 2 days. We were able to ensure minimum disruption to their operations.

Rutherglen Shopping Centre Removal of AIB transom boards

Working to a tight time scale, we were required to remove the AIB transom boards and ceiling tiles within the customer toilets.

It was necessary to safely assemble a decontamination unit process to ensure effective decontamination of operatives and the safety of themselves and those around them.

It was necessary to locate concealed suspect asbestos containing materials (ACMs) as far as reasonably practical. Samples and analysis of these materials and thereafter undertake a risk assessment of the asbestos materials identified, thereby minimising the risk of the accidental disturbance of hazardous materials.

Glasgow School of Art Removal and licensed disposal of Pipe Insulation.

Following a tragic fire where the blaze destroyed one of Glasgow’s iconic buildings - Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building - it was necessary to conduct the removal and licensed disposal of Pipe Insulation.

Carymar were able to operative efficiently within a fire damaged environment ensuring a clean area to commence refurbishment works.

University of StrathclydeRemoval of 200m² AIB canopy

This project required the construction of a ceiling to floor enclosure as demonstrated in the photograph. We were then able to safely remove the AIB canopy prior to demolition works.

Kilpatrick Primary SchoolRemoval of 15m² sprayed coating and insulation debris

The scope of works including the removal of sprayed insulation to ceiling, insulation debris to slatted boxing and debris to calorifier cupboard and store situated at the pool area of the swimming pool.

It was necessary to assemble an enclosure to ensure all potential fibres were contained. The sprayed coating was inspected with surfactant through a wet injection machine prior to being removed.

University of West Scotland Removal of AIB ceiling tiles and transom panels

This particular project required the set up of 6 areas per floor prior to removal of AIB ceiling tiles and transom panels above door units. This enabled works to be completed quickly and with minimal disruption to the University’s activities.
