Hymn No. 645: ..........................................................tune:(congregation standing)

Reading: — Frances Scott Key.................(congregation remain standing)

Randy DanielO! Say, can you see by the dawn’s early light, what so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whosebroad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, o’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantlystreaming? And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag wasstill there. O! Say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Johannes Smith, Master GuideOn the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes. What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, as it fitfully glows, half conceals, half discloses? Now itcatches the gleam of the morning’s first beam. In full glory reflected now shines in the stream. ‘Tis thestar-spangled banner. O! Long may it wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Nancy Donnelly-Ivy, Air Force Civil ServantAnd where is that band who so vauntingly swore that the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion, a home anda country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge could

a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge couldsave the hireling and slave from the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave. And the star-spangled banner intriumph doth wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

Scott Rackley, US ArmyO! Thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand between their loved home and the war’s desolation! Blest withvictory and peace, may the heaven-rescued land praise the power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, and this be our motto: “In God is our trust.” And thestar-spangled banner in triumph shall wave o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Scripture Lesson: .....................................Christina Manchur KeresomaTo the Jews who had believed Him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then youwill know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants andhave never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to itforever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

(Hymn 645) is a 19th-century American Christian hymn, written by Daniel Roberts, agraduate of Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States’Declaration of Independence in 1876. The tune, was composed for these words by GeorgeWarren, who was organist at St. Thomas Church in New York City.

is a setting of Hymn 648 by James L. Hosay. This patriotic hymn was created in1921 when a poem by Sir Cecil Spring-Rice was set to music by Gustav Holst. The words of the hymn describehow a Christian owes his loyalties to both his homeland and the heavenly kingdom. The last verse, starting, “Andthere’s another country,” is a reference to heaven. The final line is based on Proverb 3:17, which reads, “Herways are ways of gentleness and all her paths are peace.” This arrangement was recently commissioned byWashington Adventist University (formerly Columbia Union College) for the 2010 Columbia Union Festival HonorsBand. Due to the big snow storm this past February, the festival was canceled. Therefore, today’s performancewill be one of the first performances of this piece.
