Dan Stevens, our associatepastor for administration, hosts today’s service. Rebekah Wang Scriven, medical director for clinicalquality at Kettering Medical Center and clinical professor of medicine at Wright State University BoonshoftSchool of Medicine, reads today’s scripture. Charles Scriven, president of Kettering College, presents thePrayers of the People. Jerry Taylor is our minister of worship and music and the organist/choir director fortoday’s service.

Aubrey Lael Keresoma, daughter of Jared and Christina Keresoma, is being dedicated today by hergrandfather, Elder Bill Keresoma, visiting from northern California. Sharing in the joy are Aubrey’sgrandparents: Bill and Judy Keresoma, and Fred and Mary Kaye Manchur; Uncle Keresoma; Uncle Richardand Aunt Andrea Manchur.

As we gather for worship we hear two settings of Hymn No. 559, The firstis by Sigfried Karg-Elert (1877 – 1933) a German composer of considerable fame in the early twentiethcentury The tune is almost “hidden” in the sound of the chords but is easily seen when looking at the score. The second setting is by American composer, Michael Burkhart from Minneapolis, Minnesota.

(Hymn No. 8) the hymn most often associated with Thanksgiving, has an interestinghistory. Dutch Protestants--who were forbidden from practicing their religion under the Catholic King PhilipII of Spain--celebrated a war victory by borrowing this familiar folk melody and giving it new words. "Wiltheden nu treden" or, loosely translated, "We gather together," a phrase that itself connoted a heretoforeforbidden act: Dutch Protestants joining together in worship. Its first appearance in print was in a 1626collection of Dutch patriotic songs, "Nederlandtsch Gedencklanck."

is one of the great Thanksgiving anthems by Hal Hopson, a full-timecomposer/church music clinician living in Dallas, Texas.

(Hymn No. 462) is a well-known Christian hymn. The lyrics werewritten in 1873 by blind hymn writer Fanny J. Crosby to the music written in 1873 by Phoebe P. Knapp. Itwas chosen today by our guest speaker.

is an arrangement of J.S. Bach’s setting of Hymn No. 559 which Bach usedfor his Cantata 79. Virgil Fox, a great American organist during the last century, arranged Bach’s music fororgan solo. The full organ plays the part of the trumpets and the organ trumpets play the part Bach assigned
