    A FRANCISCAN VIEW OF STEWARDSHIP

In the Gospel this week, Jesus points out to hisdisciples the poor widow who has just dropped twosimple copper coins into the temple treasury. Ob-serving her actions, Jesus delivers a teaching onstewardship. Despite her poverty, the poor widow

in todays Gospel does not refuse God her generos-ity. Out of her desperately impoverished life, shecontributes to an earthly institution to give Godglory and praise. It is not the monetary value of hergift that was important to Jesus, but the love, trustand gratitude she expressed through her gift.

This is one of my favorite gospel readings be-cause of the radical trust in God it took for thewidow to faithfully give her last pennies to the

Lord. Even though she didn't know how she wouldeat the next day, like St. Francis of Assisi, shetrusted that somehow God would provide forher. That trust is evident of a deep seated belief that God's generosity will cover all our needs.

This Gospel asks us similarly compelling steward-ship questions: In what or whom do we place ourtrust? What do we value? How do our own contri-butions to our community of faith reflect our gener-osity toward God?

This weekend, consider this gospel call to stew-ardship: May the Lord grant you trust in his gener-osity and desire to do his will.

A pesar
