Religious Educa on at the parish is a priority and with our new Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Natalie Ibarra in place, we are ge ng ready for another busy and full year with Sacramental Prepa-ra on, Scripture study, Youth Group and Young Adult ac vi es. At the heart of this en re ministry is the faith development of our young people. Please pray for Natalie Ibarra, Larry LaGrasta, Elena Zavala, Araceli Gonzalez and Mary Dorso who have the major respon-sibility for R.E. at San Luis Rey. However, it is our par-ents and the family in general who have the primary responsibility of passing on the faith to the young. Please support them all with your prayers as we make our prepara ons for the coming year. Our Men’s Prayer and Discernment Group meet on the first Thursday of September in the Francis Room at the Mission beginning at 7:00 pm. There is Scripture and faith sharing in a casual atmosphere ll 9:00 pm. If you are over 21 and would like to join us, give me a call at the parish for more details. Easy chairs and couches in good condi on are need-ed for our Youth Room. If you have something we might use please give me a call or send an email to me and let’s talk! Thank you. September is Stewardship Month at the parish. It gives us an opportunity to look at Time, Treasure and Talent, those ‘wheels’ that keep every parish running well. We will have some updates and informa on from the Pastor, Fr. David, regarding our Treasure (Our financial situa on) and a Welcome Sunday, which will focus on invi ng people to share their Time and Talent in various capaci es and ministries. There will be a Welcome Breakfast for new parishioners in September also. Four of our Franciscan Friars from the Province of St. Barbara made Solemn Profession of Vows (for life) at Mission Santa Barbara on Saturday 30 August. We congratulate them. One of the four is our own Br. Phillip Polk, OFM, who is currently a student at the Franciscan School of Theology at San Luis Rey Mission. It is a great blessing for us to have four of our brothers make their final commitment in the Franciscan Order – please remember them in your prayers. The Lord give you peace, and may you have a blessed week.

Fr. Adrian.

FROM THE PASTOR…

Peace and all good!

Now that our summer is winding down and coming to a close, I hope that you all had a good summer. Those of you who were able to take trips and travel and see family and friends, I hope you had a very good me. I also wish every-one a happy Labor Day W\weekend. Pope Francis recently said, "There are two key facets of life: work and prayer. Work is part of God's loving plan for humanity, who is called to par cipate in his act of crea on. Power, money and culture do not give us dignity. Work, honest work, gives us dignity." I hope that the work you do gives you dignity and peace and sustains you and your family. I hope your work is something that you enjoy. Please con nue to pray for our brothers and sisters who do not have work or are looking for more work or be er work.

Friday, a week ago, we had the Feast Day and celebra on to honor San Luis Rey, our patron saint. We had a number of events, of par cular note the procession with fire-works. It was a great me had by all. I thank all of those who worked so hard to organize it and all those who par ci-pated. What I enjoy about the Feast of San Luis Rey is that the event isn't a fundraiser. It's just an opportunity for eve-ryone to get together and celebrate.

Work on the Parking lot/Sports Court is progressing, with work scheduled to be finished by October 19th. Parking is never good here at the Parish or Old Mission. I'd like to thank you for being pa ent, kind and gentle with each oth-er as you come to mass and leave. I think when the park-ing lot is finished, it will be a wonderful addi on to our par-ish and will make the access to our facili es much be er. Also, if you haven't done so yet, don't forget to reg-ister your children for Religious Educa on classes before the deadline, September 7th.

September we've designated as our Stewardship month, where we look at how we u lize the gi s of me, talent and treasure that God has given to us. We'll be looking at how we are commi ed to our faith and our faith life, not only financially, but with our service, our good works and our volunteering. There will be more informa on soon as well as an end of the year report on our parish financ-es. This is your parish and your funds, so it's important that you have mely and meaningful informa on about our use of parish funds as a staff and as good stewards.

As you read this, I am taking nine days of vaca on to visit the friars in Mexico City. It will be some me to rest and get away, enjoy the art and culture and museums. I'll keep you in my prayers, please keep me in yours. Thank you for your great love of this wonderful parish.

Fr. David Gaa, OFM

DOING GOD’S WILL

The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his yearn-ings to God—he says, “You duped me, O L , and I let myself be duped” (Jeremiah 20:7)—indicates a close and personal rela onship with God. It is one the prophet ob-viously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges pre-sented by following God’s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giv-ing up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God.

The only way to do God’s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Le er to the Ro-mans: “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2a).

Padre Adrian Peelo, OFM
