The Government has overhauled the design and technology syllabus following concerns that an earlier draft of the document placed too much emphasis on topics such as cooking, flower arranging, bicycle maintenance and sewing. The new curriculum will now cover extensive use of “cutting-edge design equipment”, including 3D printers, laser cutters and robotics. It will also include more advanced electronics including lessons in programming micro-processor chips. A senior Whitehall source said: "The new curriculum will give pupils the skills to design, make, and test their own products. Pupils will learn computer-aided design and electronics. 3-D printers will become standard in our schools - a technology that is transforming manufacturing and the economy. Combined with the introduction of programming, it is a big step forward from Labour's dumbed down curriculum.”

what is a PIC?

‘PIC’ stands for….A PIC is a low cost microcontroller

Microcontrollers are microprocessors, specially designed for control

Page 22: Computing design & technology torben steeg. otics-lessons-in-new-curriculum.html.

They are cheap (can be much less than £1)

They have pins for input and output signals

They can replace things like gates, timers etc

They need to be programmed

The program controls how they behave
