Paul Creston served as organist at St. Malachy's – The Actors' Chapel 1934-1967. His orchestral, chamber and vocal works have been widelyperformed around theworld. Performances of hismusic have been championedbymany conducting greats includingArturo Toscanini, EugeneOrmandy,andLeopoldStokowski.

Establishedin2009,TheAnnualPaulCrestonAwardhonorshislegacyascomposer,churchmusicianandartist.ThefirstrecipientoftheAwardwasFrederickSwann,internationalperformer,composer,arranger,andchurchmusician,whoisconsideredbypeersaliketobeamongtheveryfewthatrepresentthezenithoftheAmericanchurchmusicscene.ThesecondrecipientwasBruceNeswick,DirectorofMusicandOrganistatTheCathedralofSt.JohntheDivineinNewYorkCity.Mr.NeswickisoneofAmerica’smajortalentsinthefieldoforganperformanceandisespeciallynotedforhissuperbabilityasan improvisateur,acraftwhichonlya feworganists intheUnitedStateshavemadetheirspecialty. The2012recipient isDavidHiggs,ChairoftheOrganandHistoricalKeyboardsDepartmentattheEastmanSchoolofMusic.Hewaspresentedtheawardat‘VoicesUnited,’abenefitconcertatTheBeaconTheatreonNovember12,2012.ConcertsatSt.Malachy’swasinitiallydevelopedtobenefittheorgancampaignthroughauniqueseriesfeaturinginstrumental,choral,Broadway,opera,chamberandsymphonicperformersandmusicprogramming.ConcertsatSt.Malachy’sprogramshaveincluded:TheFairbanksTrio(Asimov,NaginandHopkins),DaniloPina(piano),‘LoveNotes–fromBroadwaytoOpera’(NYBarAssociation),TheThreeCantors–fromSanctuarytoStage,TheSalvatones,TheOrchestraofSt.Malachy’s,TheNewYorkBoychoir,FacetheMusic,TheAuburnUniversityShowChoir,TheVirtuosIQuintet,Sweet Plantain and Simon Boyar, Daniel Brondel, Deborah Jamini, Joanna Arnold Darrow in a performance of Creston’smusic. HISTORYOFST.MALACHY’S–THEACTORS’CHAPELLocatedonWest49thStreet,betweenBroadwayandEighthAvenue,St.Malachy'sRomanCatholicChurchwasfoundedin1902.Andalthoughtheyearshaveseenmanychanges intheneighborhoodof thechurch,St.Malachy'sremainstoday,anactive, integralpartof itsmostunusual,mostdynamic community.With the construction of TheActors' Chapel below themain church in 1920, St.Malachy's became famous as a havenofworshipfortheentertainmentcommunity.SomenotableeventsincludetheweddingofDouglasFairbanksandJoanCrawfordandthefuneralMassforRudolph Valentino. GeorgeM. Cohan, Spencer Tracy, Perry Como,and Bob and Dolores Hope all worshipped at St.Malachy's - The Actors'Chapel.Over the decades, the ebb and flowof good times and bad have had an impact on the parish.As late as 1968, over 16,000 peoplemonthlyattendedSt.Malachy's;andonopeningnights,many inshowbusinesscameto lightcandlesforthesuccessoftheirshows.Butsweepingchangecameagain.MadisonSquareGardenmovedawayandthenightclubsclosed.Massageparlors,pornshops,prostitutionanddrugsmovedinandtheneighborhoodbecameunstable.TheaterpeopleandtouristsfearedlingeringintheareaandstoppedvisitingSt.Malachy's.Thechurchanditspeopleweresuffering,andvandalismandtheftwereweeklyoccurrences.Butin1976,FatherGeorgeW.MoorewasassignedtoSt.Malachy'sandsetinmotionyetanotherwaveoffar-reachingchange.Apastoralteamconceptwasinitiated,whichincludednotonlypriestsandsisters,butalsoagroupofcaringmenandwomenofall faiths.TheirmissionwastorenewthelongtraditionofSt.Malachy's:ministeringtopeople of the neighborhood.To this end, staff members actively participated in a variety of local and community organizations, includingCommunityBoards4&5,theMayor'sMidtownCitizensCommittee,TheBroadwayAssociation,theLeagueofAmericanTheatersandProducers,theTheater Development Fund, Actor's Equity, 42nd Street Civic Association, 42nd Street Redevelopment Association and the Clinton PlanningCouncil.Oneoftheoutstandingaccomplishmentsoftheireffortswasthe1977establishmentofEncoreCommunityServicestoservetheneedsofseniorcitizens.Inrecentyears,Rev.RichardD.Baker,pastor(2004-present),hascontinuedFr.Moore’svisionoftheChurchservingthecommunity.UnderFr.Baker'spastorate,St.Malachy’sparish registryhasgrownand increasingdesire forall sacraments isevidenceofa spiritually fervent community.Withitsuniquedemographicoflocalparishioners,touristsandperformingartsprofessionals,St.Malachy’shasremainedaplacewhere‘Catholicscanalwayscomehome'andwherepeopleofallbackgroundsarewelcome.St.Malachy'scontinuestobeasymboloffaith,hopeandlove,livingouttheGospelmessage,inthe'hustleandbustle'ofTimesSquare.
