Conductor’s Corner by Carmen Narveson
It has been a busy, but
rewarding, fall season as we
wind down from summer
and look forward to our
Community Christmas
concert on December 1st.
I have an article taped next
to my desk entitled “Gratitude is Good for You.”
It is a gentle reminder to conductors and teachers
like me that life remains so enjoyable if you
remember to appreciate those around you. I’m
guessing that the conductors who read this have a
very similar list! Here is a part of my gratitude list:
I am grateful for my amazing, musical, dedicated
band members. In addition to being wonderful
musicians, they are willing helpers, friends, and
just really interesting, nice people. That extends
to Carol, our librarian; Wayne, our very organized
“roadie”; and our hard-working Board of
Directors. I am grateful for the arts supporters in
our community and region. We have great
support from our city, our audience members,
Chatfield businesses and service groups, and
especially our Southeastern Minnesota Arts
Council. We couldn’t offer the programming we
do without all of their help. It’s essential.
I am grateful for our amazing Chatfield Music
Lending Library and the people who work
there. To be able to peruse this vast collection of
band music to discover “treasures” for our
concerts is my idea of heaven on earth. Our
library staff works hard to fill orders, catalog
music and protect our collection. Where else
would we find some of our summer concert
favorites that include Blue Tail Fly, The Drunken
Sailor, Jazz Pizzicato, and Cole Porter on Broadway in
addition to thousands of marches.
I am grateful for my family and all families of
musicians who support us in our endeavors. And
with that, the Chatfield Brass Band and myself
wish you holidays filled with music, good
company, and gratitude.

Library News By Teresa Cerling Library Manager
The library is constantly striving to
improve service to our patrons by
making the ordering and payment
systems easier to work with.
This year we started using the Intuit
Payment Network. Invoices have a
unique link on them that takes the patron to the Intuit Payment
Network website. They can then pay using a credit card or
directly from their bank account. I encourage all patrons to use
this fast and secure method of payment.
I would like to thank all of you that donated to the library this
past year. For those that donated specifically to get boxes
cataloged, we were able to sort, count and catalog 5 boxes in just
the last month. We still have lots of boxes to go through and
have to be selective in accepting music donations, so please
contact us first if you want to donate music. However, we do
appreciate it when our patrons send in parts that we don’t have
with their returned music.
The library received an anonymous $5,000 donation this year to
pay specifically for cataloging music! We were able to hire two
professional catalogers. They cataloged close to 600 new pieces
of music. We are so grateful for our anonymous donor!
We also have a new fundraising tool called “FundMyGroup” It
brings together online retailers that want to generate extra
business with groups wanting to raise funds. Simply go to
FundMyGroup.org to search for an online retailer and begin
shopping. Be sure to select the Chatfield Brass Band and Music
Lending Library as your group. Each qualifying purchase results
in cash back to us!
2013 accomplishments:
• 714 orders to 43 states and 5 foreign countries.
• 267 new and renewing members this fiscal year.
• 721 volunteer hours this fiscal year. Thank you to all of
the volunteers that helped this past year at the library!
• 1200 new titles added to the online catalog.
• New furnace and air conditioner!
We are very excited to finally have a new furnace and air
conditioner. The goal was to stabilize the environment in order
P a g e 2
to better preserve the music. The staff doesn’t mind the more
comfortable working conditions either. Part of the energy audit
that we had a year ago also recommended that we insulate the
above ground walls of the library. We will be working on getting
this improvement accomplished this year.
If you have ever wondered what we have in our collection—we
have 49 categories of music. Most of the categories are cataloged
and searchable in the online catalog. Below is a list of categories
along with their corresponding call letters: Brass Ensembles
(BE), Band and Orchestra (BOA), Cakewalks (CW), Caprices
(CAP), Christmas (XMAS), Circus (CIR), Concert (C), Concert
Marches (CM), Concert Pop (CP), Fanfares (FAN), Funeral
Dirges (FD), Galops (GAL), Gavottes (GAV), Intermezzo/
Serenades (IN), Marches (M), Marching Band (MB), Mazurkas
(MAZ), Novelties (N), Organ (ORG), Overtures (OV), Paso
Dobles (PD), Patriotic (PAT), Patrols (PT), Piano Solos (PN),
Piano Solo Books (PNB), Piano Duets (PND), Polkas (POL),
Pop (P), Quadrilles (Q), Quicksteps (QK), Rag (RAG), Religious
(R), Schottisches (SCH), Stage Band (SB), Silent Film (SF),
Sheet Music (SM), Suites and Selections (SS), Solos with Band
(SWB), Solos and Ensembles (SE), Trombone Smears (TS), and
Waltzes (W).
The categories of music we still need to catalog are: Combos,
Concert Band Books, Manuscript, Orchestra, and Orchestra
Books. We are currently working on getting the Band and
Orchestra category cataloged and now have 3654 titles done.
Many of you have requested “Red’s White and Blue March” by
Red Skelton. We now have this in our collection.
The staff and volunteers of the Chatfield Music Lending Library
wish you the best for the New Year.

The Chatfield Music Lending
Library exists to collect, repair, catalog, store and make available –
on a loan-basis – all types of band
music, especially music no longer
being published.
The Chatfield Brass Band provides an opportunity for amateur
instrumentalists of all ages and
abilities to play in a first rate
performing group. The band strives
to give our members the experience
of playing many types of music, with
special attention to playing
traditional band music. We serve our
community and neighbors by
performing for celebrations and
parades, and we take pride in
continuing the tradition of Chatfield
as “Bandtown U.S.A.”.
Check the date on your mailing
label. That is the date you paid your
dues. Library memberships are
effective for one year from the date
paid. So, if there is a 2013 date, you
are paid until next year. The library
depends on memberships to help
support operations, so please take a
minute and send in your dues today.
