What is Conflict?

The struggle between the opposing forces.

Internal Conflict

Between a character and his/her self.

Ex: Man vs. Self

External Conflict

Between a character and an outside force

Man vs. Man

Man vs. Society

Man vs. Nature

Man vs. ManA character struggles with

another character. Examples: The “good guy

vs. the bad guy”

Man vs. SelfThe characters struggle

takes place in his/her own mind. Usually has something to do with a choice between

right and wrong or overcoming emotions.

Man vs. NatureA character struggles with a

force of nature. This character is struggling to

survive a natural disaster or desolation.

Man vs. Society

A character or group of which characters fight

against the society in which they live. The characters

fight against social traditions, freedom, or

rights.

Why is conflict important to the plot?

Creates narrative. Gives the book purpose and a story to tell.

Gives the story action! Without conflict there would be nothing interesting to read.
