CALENDAR OF RELIGIOUS SERVICES

Dear Friends, On the Shabbat that straddles October 16 and 17, we shall again begin the reading of the

Torah. I suppose that there is no other book that has had more influence on the history of the world than this one, and, when we start the annual cycle of read-ing, I find myself captivated by a number of majestic thoughts. Let me share a few of them with you.

The practice of public reading of Torah is at least 2500 years old. In the eighth chapter of the biblical book of Nehemiah, he who was the governor appointed by the Persians to oversee the restoration of Judean sover-eignty over the land of Canaan in about 538 BCE, we discover how the reading was then performed. I hope you’ll look up the details, but, take my word for it, in all major respects what we do in our sanctuary (and what is done in every synagogue around the globe) is virtually identical with what Nehemiah’s contemporar-ies did. Whenever I read from the Torah, I have a powerful, almost mystical sense of participating in an unbroken historical tradition. I am doing what Jews have done in every place and time where they have lived since the days of Nehemiah. That’s a remark-able chain of tradition to which we link ourselves.

Nehemiah and his priest, Ezra, did something more than read the Torah. They arranged to translate it; the Bible says they read it so everyone could understand. They had to translate it because the Torah is written in Hebrew, while the common language of the people at that time was Aramaic. I try to translate the text into English for the same reason. They – and we – under-stand that these words are not simply words, but the key to our entire identity. They contain important val-ues and ideas and practices. We structure our lives, consciously or otherwise, by what the Torah teaches, so it is important to us not only that we read the words, but that we understand the mandates that are contained in them.

I look at this scroll and think of the many times in our history that we carried it away from places of hatred and oppression, preserving for ourselves a higher set of ideals and principles. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Members of CBI,

Having concluded Rosh HaShanah, when we wel-comed the Jewish New Year 5770 and Yom Kip-pur, when we reflected on our past transgressions, we now approach the festive days of Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Our New Year brings promise of exciting activi-ties, beginning with our Annual Food Fest on No-vember 14th & 15th. Many of you have already volunteered for this worthy project, but additional help is needed and will be welcomed. The raffle and silent auction shall be exciting as well. Food Fest is the Sisterhood's primary money maker, and their contribution to our congregation's operating budget is vital. Please contact Laura Noe or Ann Engel and sign up to participate. Again we welcome our newest members to our Family of Families. With the children of our con-gregants, our religious school enrollment has risen considerably. Your officers and board continue to monitor the daily operation of our congregation. Please call me with any questions or concerns you may have. This New Year, it is my hope that you will attend services more frequently and participate in our congregation's many worthwhile activities, that you will find most rewarding. Shalom, Maury Wolfson President

rah by making Torah a significant part of your own life.

The Torah is a holy document, and so, too, are people holy. When I ask God’s blessing on someone in the presence of the Torah – you may have noticed – it is my custom to place one hand on the person and one on the Torah. I know I am not the source of the blessing. I am but a conduit between a holy book and a holy per-son, praying that this holy quality flows from one hand to the other, from a scroll to a soul and that the person who receives this infusion of holiness may be changed and elevated from that point on.

There is so much more to write and to say about being in proximity to the Torah. Enough for now. Suffice it to say, I hope some of the feelings that I have haltingly tried to convey can imbue you with the mystical urge of Torah that I have the privilege of experiencing every week. Shalom, Kenneth D. Roseman, Rabbi

CONSECRATION AND YIZKOR FOR SUKKOT

On the evening of Friday, October 9, we shall gather in the Sanctuary for the consecration of new students in our reli-gious education program. It will be a great pleasure to wel-come Gabriela Balkin, Madisyn Darling, Nolan Green, and Rebecca Simpson into the formal phase of their Jewish education and ask God’s blessings upon them. This cere-

mony will begin promptly at 6:30 PM. At the end of the holyday period of Sukkot, it is customary to recite Yizkor. This extra service will be included in the standard Friday night service on October 9, which will begin at 7:30 PM. Everyone, of course, is cordially invited to attend.

ADULT EDUCATION COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES THREE LECTURES At the request of the Adult Education Committee, Rabbi Roseman will be summarizing the course he taught to advanced history students at TAMUCC last year. The course was enti-tled “The History of Religion in America,” and it will be offered again in the fall of 2010. In this course, Rabbi Roseman outlined for the students major developments in American Religious History, and he will take three Sunday mornings to highlight the major trends. On Sunday, October 4 at 10:30 AM, he will add address the documents that established the United States of America and the religious ideas that they contained. He will also highlight the one most important word in the history of American religion. On Sunday, October 18 at 10:30 AM, he will continue with a talk about the role that religion played in America in terms of the development of the American character, stress-ing the different roles that religion played in various sub-groups of the American popula-tion. Finally, on Sunday, October 25 at 10:30 AM, Rabbi Roseman will discuss the crisis of be-lief that occurred in the early twentieth century, how it played out in the work of various religious groups and what we are doing about it today. Light refreshments will be offered at 10:00 AM on all three days in the Grossman Audito-rium. There is no charge, and everyone is cordially invited to attend.

ADULT EDUCATION RETREAT SCHEDULED

On Saturday, February 6, we shall gather at 10:00 AM at the Rockport Yacht Club for the first of our three learning sessions about the MAKING OF RABBINIC JUDAISM. Our guest speaker will be Rabbi Judith Abrams of Houston, a well-known and dy-namic interpreter of the literature and history of the period from the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem to the publication of the Babylonian Talmud (approximately 70 CE to 600 CE). The documents of this period are often seen as arcane and difficult to understand, but Rabbi Abrams makes them come alive with her lively presentations, her delightful humor and her vivacious personality. We count ourselves enormously fortunate to have such a gifted scholar join us for our retreat and hope you will look forward to meeting her and learning from her. The retreat will continue Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Arrangements have been made for all meals and for lodging at the Hampton Inn in Rockport. Saturday evening’s program is designed to produce smiles and fellowship; you won’t want to miss it! Scholarship funds are available to assist anyone who needs financial help in attending. A detailed flyer with reservation information will be mailed out soon. Mean-while, mark your calendars and hold the dates. This is a special opportunity open only to members of CBI.

RABBI ROSEMAN IN THE COMMUNITY

On Thursday, October 1 at 7:00 PM at the Art Museum of South Texas, Rabbi Roseman will take part in a program commemorating the fiftieth year of the pub-lication of To Kill A Mockingbird. Originally published in 1960, this book be-came an instant classic of American literature. Our Rabbi has been selected as to read about fifteen minutes of his favorite selections from this remarkable novel. Then, on October 13 at noon, he will deliver the invocation at the Corpus Christi City Council.
