HOLD THE DATE Last September, nine congregations in Corpus Christi pooled their resources to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the trag-ic events of 9/11. You may remember that we joined to conduct a number of civic projects (beach clean up, helping at the food bank, sending boxes to deployed troops and collecting toiletries for the Good Samaritan Shelter), each used its Sabbath worship to highlight the destruction and the lessons to be learned and then we had a combined service at the First United Methodist Church that was attended by roughly 900 people.

Following that successful interfaith venture, we concluded that it would be a shame if the good feelings and mutual commitment to understanding and to the welfare of our community were dissi-pated. So, this fall, we shall offer something different to the combined religious citizens of our city.

On Sunday, October 7, we shall hold an interfaith concert at the Performing Arts Center on the campus of Texas A&M Universi-ty. Music, a remarkably common language for all peoples, will come from a variety of religious, national and ethnic traditions. We anticipate welcoming a group of Islamic Sufi mystics who are whirling dervishes, a cantor, various other musical groups from Corpus Christi and, perhaps, a group sing-along at the end of the evening. Our theme will be music that highlights PEACE AND FREEDOM.

We hope you will mark your calendars now for this free and ex-citing opportunity. It’s our way of expressing the value that we can respect each other’s differences at the same time that we can find unity in our society. You’ll hear more details in the fall, but let’s plan to make the evening a celebration of the best that char-acterizes our community.

Dear Friends:

A few weeks ago I visited a museum exhibit on the campus of Tougaloo College in Jackson, MS. Tougaloo is a historically Black school founded shortly after the Civil War to give newly-freed slaves access to higher education. The exhibit was called “Beyond the Swastika and Jim Crow: Refugee European Jewish Scholars at Black Colleges.”

I had known that a number of Jewish scholars had escaped European death during the 1930s and had found research and teaching positions in the U.S. That some of them ended up at Howard University and Fisk University and Tougaloo was a new insight for me, but at least I had known the general outlines of what had happened. I also, of course, knew about the sordid history of race relations in the American South during these years, so the exhibit should not have surprised me.

But it did. Seeing pictures of the KKK marching in their robes and reading letters of rejection because the applicant was Jewish or because he or she was a white person applying to teach at an all-Black school – this shocked and moved me in ways that I certainly did not expect.

Later, I thought about the impact seeing these familiar images had on me. Maybe it was the setting; seeing them at Tougaloo might have intensified my reaction. But more than that, I think that my emotional response of shock and dismay caused me to recognize how desensitized we have become to scenes of carnage, oppression, prejudice and destruction. Perhaps this began over forty years ago when live scenes of Southeast Asian warfare were daily broadcast to the televisions next to our dining tables and into our bedrooms, all in living (or dying?) color. Remember Platoon and Apocalypse Now? Today, we hardly react at all.

-A fourteen year-old boy shot at a fifteen year-old enemy in New Orleans, but the bullet killed a nine year-old girl by accident. Pass some more coffee.

-Two people were killed in a motorcycle wreck on SPID last night. Have you finished with the sports pages yet?

-Another dead homeless man was found this morning under the Leopard Street overpass. What time will you be home from work?

-Eighty more Syrian civilians were massacred and mutilated yesterday by government artillery. Ho, hum. What else is new?

The narcoticized syndrome that has developed in the last four decades ought to be called VIET NUMB. Many, perhaps most of us are incapable of reacting to the horror and repulsive offenses that crowd the daily Metro section of the newspaper and the hourly news on TV. We have become so numbed by the onslaught of violence that has been our daily diet since the VN war that we remain unstirred by even the most terrible of tragedies. And unresponsive, we are all-the-more unable to think that there might be something we could do to diminish the disaster, to alleviate the pain or to lessen the chance of recurrence.

Here are a few simple activities that you might consider as steps to resensitize yourself to the human tragedies among which we live – tragedies that ought to shock and appall us, but which leave us largely unmoved.

As you read the Caller-Times tomorrow morning, take a piece of paper and make a mark on it for every crime, every injury, every death. If there are two or more victims in the same story, make a mark for each person. When you are done, consider the total and its implications – and how often in the past you’ve read

similar reports without reacting.

Take a drive through some of Corpus Christi’s less-desirable neighborhoods. Look at the houses and at the people. What did you see that you never saw before? Spend part of a day volunteering at the Good Samaritan Mission on Alameda Street or at the Corpus Christi Food Bank. Keep you eyes and ears open. Talk to some of the staff about the clients and try to grasp the reality of their lives.

If you discover that you’ve become VIET NUMBed – and nearly all of us have – become more self-aware and then find some small way in which your revived sensitivity can be put into action. You can’t save the entire world, but you can make a difference.

Shalom, Kenneth D. Roseman, Rabbi

Dear Members of CBI,

In mid-June I will have served as your president for 1 year. I want to take this opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments CBI has achieved over the last

12 months and to thank all of those who have contributed time, money and effort to make the year so successful.

Religiously, we have periodically enjoyed guest rabbis and cantors who have provided different insights and mu-sic for us to ponder and enjoy. Attendance on Friday nights has been good—but we encourage everyone to attend more often. Our Saturday morning and once a month Friday night continue to be offered. Although all of our spe-cial holiday services have been special, the community Passover Service was nothing short of sensational. I be-lieve our religious offerings continue to serve our entire Congregation’s religious needs, as was my commitment a year ago.

Educationally, we have maintained a strong Sunday school program for our youth along with programs for pre-paring them for Bar and Bat Mitzvah. The quality and meaningfulness of each child’s service reflects the quality of their preparation. Saturday morning Torah Study has been full of lively discussion, debate and humor as the group analyzed the Pirke Avot. The 92nd street Y series has offered great live interviews and the quality is reflect-ed by the fact that attendance has grown from 10-15 people to over 40 per session.

From a social\social action point of view CBI participated with other religious denominations in both actively helping people and remembering the tragedy of 9/11. We conducted our annual food drive for the Corpus Christi Food Bank and Rabbi Roseman continues to be our community leader and spokesman for social action and inter-faith activities in Corpus Christi. How about the evening with Rabbi Alper and the wonderful Mothers’ Day breakfast. All of these activities have added to our becoming a family of families.

In addition to the above listed accomplishments your Board of Trustees has studied and made some very im-portant decisions regarding items that congregants have brought to our attention.

In the very near future there will be upgrades in our temple security that will provide increased safety for our Congregation and staff. The Board has also approved that Mike Trimyer be on duty when Sunday School is in session.

Thanks to the work of Amy Krams and Gary Blum significant improvements are about to take place for upgrading Seaside Cemetery which include a new sprinkling system, leveling of the ground and stones, and generally sprucing up the entire area. These improvements will be applied to the entire Jewish sec-tion of Seaside.

Thanks to Jack Solovey the beautiful wood stars have replaced the holes left when speakers were re-moved from the front walls of the sanctuary.

Sidewalks around the Temple have been repaired thanks to the support of Sisterhood.

Bill Adams has volunteered his time to replace the worn out bathroom faucets and other hardware that will prevent leaks and save dollars. In addition the ceilings in several bathrooms have been upgraded.

Finally all the above and more were accomplished while maintaining a solid fiscal balance sheet.

In summary, my gratitude goes out to all of those individuals, the Board of Trustees, Sisterhood and the leader-ship of Rabbi Roseman for making this 2012 such active and successful year. Without all of us working together we could have never been as successful.

As you might expect there is much more to do—that is a future topic.

Please plan to attend the Annual Congregation Meeting at 4:00 p.m. on June 24, 2012. The meeting will take an hour or less and be followed with a barbeque dinner. So, come and join us for this important and fun CBI family event.

Shalom, Jim Gold

Congregation Beth Israel Hosts Reunion of Confirmation Classes of 1962 on June 1st

Momentous events marked the year 1962. The Cuban Missile crisis took the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of war. The U.N. General Assembly condemned South Africa’s policy of apartheid. In Israel, Adolf Eichmann was hung. John Glenn became the first American to orbit space. The first Wal-Mart opened in Bentonville, Arkansas. Johnny Carson was named host of The Tonight Show. Gasoline cost 28¢ a gallon. And in Corpus Christi, Texas, B’nai Israel Synagogue and Temple Beth-El celebrated the Sunday School confirmation of 32 young people, the first of the baby-boomers.

It’s been 50 years since the occasion, and members of those confirmation classes will be returning to Corpus Christi on June 1 to celebrate the anniversary of their confirmation and to reconnect with one another and with their congregation.

In the intervening years, the 1962 confirmands have gone on to higher education, begun professions, built businesses and started families. They are as far-flung as California and Connecticut, but most reside in other Texas cities: Houston, Victoria, San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, even Seguin!

Regrettably, several have passed away, and two cannot be located.

In 2012 many of the classes of 1962 have retired or are nearing retirement, although a few still get up and go to work everyday. Most have volunteered and continue to volunteer in their communities and with Jewish organizations.

The following are expected to be in Corpus Christi for the reunion: Stephanie Wasserman Beasley, Candy Alexander Cheney, Barbara Spivak Feldman, Jay Ginsberg, Hank Goldstein, Ruth Grossman, Gerald Holtzman, Barbara Jessel Lack, Bryna Bein Levi, Carl Levy, Gary Lichtenstein, Charles Racusin, Phyllis Horn Rozen, Susan Susser, and Mark Wallock.

They hope to see you at Shabbat services on June 1st.

Ian Jacobson (Yitzchak Yaakov) was called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 19th, Parshat Behar-B'Hukotai, at Temple Beth-El in San Antonio, Texas.

He is the grandson of Clara Braslau and the late Isaac Braslau of Corpus Christi, and of Susan Jacobson and Dr. Norman Jacobson of San Antonio. His parents are Sherry and Andy Jacobson.

Ian is a seventh grader at Alamo Heights Junior School in San Antonio. He enjoys database and website programming, electronic device assembly, server development and maintenance, and many other creative endeavors.

The San Antonio Food Bank, which assists 58,000 people weekly, is Ian’s Mitzvah project selection. If you wish to donate, please call Martina at (210) 431-8309. Ian also has joined the B’nai Tzedek Teen Philanthropy Program. Clara Braslau hosted the Shabbat oneg at CBI on May 18th in his honor.

I want to thank the committee for bestowing this honor on me. As I look at the previous recipients, I am humbled by those selected be-fore me. What outstanding women! But in all honesty, more than

anything else, what I have done in this Jewish community was motivated by my own need to give back. I would not say I was raised in a very religious household. None of my grandparents knew Yiddish, we did not know the tradition of making latkes for Hanukkah, nor did we light Shabbat candles. I can even remember early marriage, serving enchiladas to Rabbi Warren Stone for a Hanukah dinner and thinking it was perfectly acceptable! I have always lived in a very assimilated environment in which Jews were a small minority.

My feelings towards Judaism began with my father, when he was president of Temple Beth El in San Antonio. Though I wouldn’t say my parents were deeply religious people, they both taught me the im-portance of getting involved and doing your part in the community. During his presidency, we went every Friday night to services and I even took my non-Jewish friends coming to my 13th birthday slum-ber party to services, since it fell on a Friday night. And then because my grandmother and Aunt Doro-thy fixed me up on a blind date with a cute Jewish boy, I moved to Corpus.

My grandparents, Philip and Pearl Lieberman, and David's grandparents, Hattie and Max Abrams, were founding members of Temple Beth El. My aunt and uncle, Joe and Dorothy Jessel, have been pillars of this Jewish community for over 65 years. And, of course, David served as president and on the board for many years.

So as a third generation Jew in this community, I realized the importance of continuing doing what oth-ers did before me to ensure a viable Jewish community in which David and I and others could raise our children.

For a small community, it is amazing what has been accomplished over the years. The many genera-tions of families that have seen their children Bar or Bat Mitzvahed and Confirmed because people like all of you here today were willing to make the commitment to ensure we had a Temple and Synagogue and Rabbis to lead and teach us.

Today, we are so fortunate to have Ken and Phyllis as the glue that keeps us together.

So, through the projects, fundraisers, committees, life cycle events and yes raising dues, together we have all kept this community alive and thriving. I accept this honor for all of us. Thank you.

Sponsor an Oneg Shabbat

We are seeking sponsors for the Friday Night Oneg Shabbats. The Temple will provide the drinks while the Sponsor(s) will provide the cakes and other Oneg snacks. We believe this is a wonderful way to honor people for special days in their lives or to memorialize loved ones on their Yahrzeits.

If you wish to participate, please call Debbie at the CBI office and tell her the date you wish to reserve. Several families can share each Oneg. The only dates not available are the monthly Family Dinner dates and B’nai Mitzvah dates.

ON BEING ALONE When Temple Beth El and B’nai Israel Synagogue merged in November of 2005 (now, roughly 6

½ years ago), we made a series of commitments as part of the merger document. Some of those commitments had to do with kashrut, and we ended up creating a dairy kitchen as part of the Grossman Auditorium. We also agreed to hold lay-led Friday evening services in a new chapel once a month, more traditional services of Shabbat morning and a complete panoply of traditional High Holyday services. To accomplish these goals, we remodeled the Temple’s library into a lovely chapel that was named after the Racusins and arranged that about a third of the Auditorium could be separated for use as a sanctuary during the High Holydays. We have also made provision to hire a second rabbi during the HHD period.

We have consistently and faithfully followed through with these commitments from the time of the merger until now. When I am away, members of the congregation have led Friday evening services, and Gary Blum has been of immense assistance on Shabbat morning.

Most of the time, we do not get enough worshippers to make a minyan on Saturday morning, and we occasionally have to ask a few people who have come early to the study group to join us so that we have at least ten people to say Kaddish. In recent weeks, however, attendance has been nothing short of dismal and depressing. On May 5th, I sat by myself for 45 minutes until one other person arrived; on May 12th, Gary and I had the same experience, until we were joined by two other people – one not Jewish.

I, frankly, enjoy coming to the synagogue on Saturday morning and praying with an intimate group of friends. But, by myself or with one other person, it’s really hard to develop any spirit of worship, and I really don’t believe that my praying by myself as your surrogate works very well. We want to provide the services that members of CBI want, and we hope that you want us to continue these shabbat morning services. But we can’t do it without your presence. In the Fall, the Worship Committee of the congregation will be examining the question of whether to continue these services or not. What happens during the next couple of months will go a long way toward helping the Committee make its recommendation to the Board. If you want us to continue, then I urge you to vote with your feet and attend the Shabbat services as frequently as you can.

Shalom, Kenneth D. Roseman, Rabbi

RABBI AND PHYLLIS ROSEMAN ON THE ROAD TO MOROCCO Last Winter, the government of Morocco determined that it would be desirable to increase the number of Jewish tourists who came to that country. Morocco is the Islamic nation that has had the most friendly relationship with Israel and the most open policy with regard to its Jewish citizens. To accomplish this aim, a number of rabbis were invited to spend eight days touring the country, including visiting with various Jewish communities, government officials and, perhaps, even the American ambassador.

Rabbi and Phyllis Roseman eagerly accepted this invitation and will be away from July 7 – 17, while they learn about this nation and its Jewish communities. They will certainly report back upon their return to Corpus Christi.

In Rabbi Roseman’s absence, please contact either Debbie Bustillo at the CBI office (857-8181) or any of the officers of the congregation if you need assistance. Rabbi Roseman will be in contact with his mobile telephone if necessary. It will obviously be difficult to get him off the camel and back before his scheduled return, but he can certainly be in touch.
