AS THE PATHS OF OUR JOURNEYS DIVERGE...SHALOM FROM RABBI AMY LEVIN

A few weeks ago, our weekly Torah reading cycle brought us to the beginning of the book of Bamidbar/Numbers. The book chronicles the wanderings of our ancestors through the wilderness. With no map, no GPS, following a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, our people underwent a metamorphosis. The nature of the community, the nature of their leadership, and the very assumptions of their faith were all transformed during the forty years of wandering.

In the eleven short months I have served as your rabbi, we have acknowledged and faced the many kinds of transformations Rodeph Sholom has undergone over recent years. Like our wandering ancestors, internalizing transformations of community, leadership and even faith, the face of your community is changing as you recall forceful previous leadership generations. We have seen your lay leadership and, of course, your spiritual leadership in flux. And we have raised up and acknowledged that the aspects of our faith which draw us to engage in Jewish community shifts with the generations.

A very creative member of my Rhode Island congregation suggested we invite people to a visit to the site of the new synagogue we were building with the tagline: “join us for a moving experience.” Although Rodeph Sholom has no plans to change physical location, you, too, are on the move and over the coming months, with mutual respect, openness and a willingness to put aside personal preferences for the greater good of sustaining the Rodeph Sholom you love, I am sure you will discern a promising new path for this precious congregation. You, too, I pray, will share a moving experience that will bring you to a good place.

Rabbi Kerry Olitzky writes, in a comment on Bamidbar: “the Torah will always give us the insight to prepare for the future even when the current approach seems to suffice and there is no need for change”.

As you settle into new patterns with your lay leadership, new programs and services, and a new rabbi, I pray that you may embrace Rabbi Olitzky’s encouragement to look to the Torah for ongoing insight to prepare for your future…even when things seem good, even when, particularly when, the dynamics are settled and comfortable, “when the current approach seems to suffice and there is no need for change.” That’s when change needs to be contemplated most.

Most of all: I pray that you continue to grow in appreciating your own strengths, lovingly dealing with your weaknesses, keeping your head up in optimism and with an eye for the next horizon. Rodeph Sholom is blessed with an admirable cadre of people who love and are committed to the congregation. You are Rodeph Sholom’s most powerful and most precious asset.

I will always be waiting for the next good news from Rodeph Sholom and pray: םכידי ישעמ לכ ךרביו םככרד חילצי ’הש / That God will see to your success along your path and will bless all the work of your hands.

L’shalom,

Rabbi Amy Levin

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGESTATE OF THE CONGREGATIONPETER ZEIDEL

I would like to thank our membership for elec ng me to the offi ce of president of our congrega on. Par cularly to my wife Judy for suppor ng me in the decision to assume this responsibility.

I congratulate on their elec on and express apprecia on to our team of offi cers, past presidents Allan Alper, Carol Weinshel and Jill Lesser, as well as Cheryl Green and Iris Krawitz for assuming their leadership posi ons. Being able to work with them over these past months has been an honor. Their devoted service should be much appreciated by the en re congrega on.

Congratula ons and thank you to those elected to our Board of Trustees. Your acceptance of this responsibility bodes well for the future of this proud congrega on.

On behalf of the congrega on, I express sincerest apprecia on to Dave Wolfe, Mark Yerushalmi, Gary Katz, Lisa Rappoport, Sy Wiesenfeld and Melissa Pavloff for all of their dedicated eff orts and endless hours of service to Rodeph Sholom. Also, to those members of the Board of Trustees whose terms will be completed June 30. We wish them well and hope that they will remain ac ve in the work of our congrega on.

During the past few months, since I was aff orded the opportunity to again serve as president, my last term being in 1983-1985, Rabbi Levin, Mark Block, our Execu ve Director, Irwin Schildkraut, our Ritual Director, my fellow offi cers and the en re Board of Trustees have diligently been working toward one goal, to secure the future of our congrega on. I believe we are on the way to achieving that goal.

I would like to provide you a State of the Congrega on report, addressing those areas that I believe are most on the minds of our members.

Clergy Leadership:Under the Chairmanship of Sam Green, a small Search Commi ee has begun the work of evalua ng our needs and our ability to retain a Rabbi who will be able to lead us well into the future. We are seeking an experienced, learned and compassionate leader, one who is open to and willing to lead us through the challenges of a 21st century conserva ve congrega on.

Once a candidate is iden fi ed, a larger cross sec on of our membership will be invited to par cipate in the selec on process.

Our goal is to have a Rabbi with us as soon as possible a er June 30, the last day that Rabbi Levin will be occupying our pulpit.

Cantor Teplitz has chosen to accept a posi on with a congrega on closer to her New Jersey home. Accordingly,

depending upon the abili es of our new Rabbi, we may seek the services of another part- me Cantor. That decision will be made a er fi rst comple ng our rabbinical search.

Lay Leadership:In April, your offi cers and trustees par cipated in a program, led by Rabbi Levin, that provoked us to consider the many aspects of synagogue life and administra on that will help to guide us into the coming years. We are hopeful that Rabbi’s recupera on will be such that we can have another similar session prior to the end of her tenure with us.

We are commi ed to having an on-going educa on program to insure well trained and informed leadership for our future.

Finances:Vice President Allan Alper has provided you with our proposed budget for the coming fi scal year. Although we have reduced the defi cit from the prior two years, we are s ll in a nega ve posi on. Much work is s ll to be done.

We have commenced an aggressive program to collect outstanding accounts receivable for prior fi scal years from those members no longer affi liated with us. The amounts due to the congrega on are approximately $121,000.

We will also be contac ng those s ll affi liated with us to insure that balances due for the current year are received by the end of our fi scal year, June 30.

Ritual:Under the leadership of Vice President Jill Lesser, Treasurer Cheryl Green, our Gabbai Sy Weisenfeld and Ritual Director Irwin Schildkraut, we have commenced looking at all aspects of the conduct and content of our services.

Our goal is to en ce greater a endance by providing a meaningful experience, one that will have varied content and ability for all to par cipate and comprehend. If successful, we are of the opinion that this will be an opportunity to enhance membership reten on and growth.

Programming:Under the leadership of Vice President Carol Weinshel, we have already provided numerous programs for par cipa on by our membership and the community at large.

Recent events have included AARP Fraud presenta on, AARP driver safety program, UConn Road Show Speaker Series, and Health and Wellness Fair. These programs were valuable for all who chose to a end.

These programs are in addi on to the educa onal and discussion series led by Rabbi Levin, Rabbi Stein, Irwin

Schildkraut and Joe Schwartz.

A very large commi ee has been mee ng to plan addi onal off erings for your considera on.

Membership Responsibili es:It has been said numerous mes during the past couple of years that we cannot con nue func oning as we have in the past. We must be open to change.

Five key ques ons are helpful in determining the likelihood that major changes will succeed or fail:

1. How is the vision diff erent, be er and more compelling?

2. Are the leaders personally commi ed to the change?

3. Does the organiza on have the capacity to make the change?

4. How ingrained is the current culture?

5. And will the change actually deliver the iden fi ed outcomes?

Over the course of the next several months, your leadership will be a emp ng to answer these ques ons and will be presen ng to you a long range plan to eff ect the changes necessary for us to have a sustainable future.

During the past approximately 2.5 years, we have discussed mergers with other Conserva ve congrega ons and the possible reloca on to the Weinberg Campus. You, our membership, spoke loud and clear that these alterna ves were not acceptable. Now then, it is me for you to be involved in determining what changes will be acceptable. No longer can you rely on a hard working, but small group of congregants to do the work to insure our future.

During the past few months, we have been able to address the fi nancial crisis that faced us, and for the me being, have stabilized our fi nancial posi on. But, be assured, that our future fi nancial stability is s ll in ques on.

We have and are con nuing to explore a wide range of opportuni es for fund raising. Each of you must be commi ed to doing your part, in a manner be er than you have in the past.

As an example, this past year, for the fi rst me in our history, members did not have to pay for High Holiday seats. It was thought, being provided that savings, a greater percentage of our members would par cipate in the Kol Nidre Appeal and those who had previously par cipated would increase their level of giving. Not only did less of us par cipate, but the level of giving decreased. Our Kol Nidre Appeal income was $8,900 vs. $18,400 the previous year.

As previously reported, through the eff orts of Roz Stein and Don Sherman, we have an opportunity to raise substan al funds to be used towards our annual opera ng budget. The daughter of our late member, Ruth Levin z”l, has commi ed to a substan al outright pledge. In addi on

she has presented us with a Challenge Grant. Your dona ons to meet that challenge will be doubled. We are apprecia ve for her loyalty, confi dence and commitment to our congrega on. It is now incumbent upon each of us to think about how our personal fi nancial commitment can help meet the Challenge Grant. Each of you will be contacted and we an cipate your commitment to our future.

Nego a ons are progressing with the City of Bridgeport for them to lease our former Talmud Torah classrooms. We are cau ously op mis c that a lease will be completed and the city will begin u lizing the space by September 1, 2016.

Our challenges are not only fi scal. It has always been known by the greater Jewish community that if you needed a minyan, twice a day, seven days a week, Rodeph Sholom was the place to go. Well my friends, that is no longer the case. While I am gra fi ed that there has been an increase in Shabbat morning a endance, the opposite has been the case with just about all of our other services. You can no longer be assured, that if you need a minyan, to contemplate, to meditate or to say Kaddish, that one will be available here. The only ones who can remedy this situa on are our members.

Rodeph Sholom has experienced challenges before. But mes are diff erent. There does not appear to be a commitment to giving that once was. Young Jewish people do not seem to have the need to be affi liated with a synagogue. Our older members seem to think that because they once did their part, it’s someone else’s turn. Well ladies and gentlemen, it’s my responsibility to tell you that there isn’t someone else. The someone else is all of us.

Your leadership is convinced that with the eff orts of a large cross-sec on of our members, we can not only survive, but prosper.

It is now incumbent upon every member to be prepared to par cipate in the work to be done. Every, yes every member must plan to par cipate, in whatever manner available to them.

Our clergy, staff , offi cers and trustees are commi ed to the con nuing future of this congrega on. But only with your eff orts and support will we be able to con nue to achieve the mission set by our founders, and be a home for prayer, learning, consola on and celebra on.

L’shalom,

Peter Zeidel

TRANSITIONS: THE FACE OF CHANGEMARK BLOCK, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, FSA

In the synagogue world, change is predictable. Offi cers and boards change, clergy and staff change, even the way services are conducted change. No ma er the nature of the change – from where services are held to re-imagining the synagogue’s mission; from new clergy and bringing on new board members to changes in contribu on pa erns – every occurrence of change leads an organiza on like our synagogue into a transi onal phase – some phases deeper and longer than others. Some say that when it comes to the words “change” and “transi on” it is all a ma er of seman cs, but it is important to look at the words separately. The diff erence between the “change” itself and the process by which our synagogue seizes change as an opportunity to really experience transi on is one that is cri cal as we head into a new fi scal year. For example, a new Rabbi is hired to assume the pulpit and lead the congrega on. This is a change in the spiritual leadership of the synagogue but it does not necessarily refl ect the totality of transi on within the synagogue. Or the board of trustees completes a term of offi ce and new trustees are elected. This can signify new volunteers coming forward to help which is necessary in a synagogue if there is any real change to take place. When there are changes in volunteer leadership and professional staffi ng these are poten ally energe c opportuni es for us to engage in a transi onal process. O en, the dynamics of change bring with it unique and diff erent opportuni es along with challenges to our conven onal thinking, planning and implementa on of programs, services and ac vi es. When this happens either the culture of the synagogue remains the same or there is the poten al to see substan ve change in the way the synagogue provides services to the community. The programs that have been planned and implemented so far this year have resulted in posi ve feedback from many with more to come in the months ahead. As all aspects of synagogue life are reviewed more carefully we can pivot to provide for our current members while ensuring our tradi on through open doors is one that welcomes all who want to enter.Transi ons, by defi ni on, can be in mida ng because many people feel secure when things remain the same. It is not at all unusual for volunteers and professionals to fall back on the saying, “we’ve always done it this way.” While it can be diffi cult, and I have had to do it myself, it is important to break from that train of thought and look at situa ons with fresh eyes. It provides us with an opportunity to step back and view our synagogue surroundings from diverse perspec ves and allow for changes to the status quo. Transi ons also encourage us to raise ques ons about what out of the box thinking can we do to increase interest in our “product”.

It goes without saying that the ability to respond posi vely to transi ons is very o en determined by the inclusiveness of the volunteer leaders and professional staff . Our leaders who determine the agenda of the synagogue is one that is meant to best meet and engage the congrega on while being invi ng to newcomers and those whose history with the synagogue dates back further. When you, our congregants, are part of the process as you have been invited to be from an early stage, you should feel part of whatever changes are being introduced. In order to provide a sense of con nuity in the synagogue it is fi ng to begin a transi onal process that elicits ideas from the broadest range of congregants possible, while discussing the challenges facing the synagogue as we move forward. The idea to bring members into the process at all stages is an integral part of our transi on. Volunteers are not just being told what will be happening during the months and years ahead, they are being asked to be a part of the process of change today. We have seen over the past months that as congregants are brought into the transi onal process they fi nd they become more invested in both the planned changes and the synagogue itself. Thus, it is also likely this will lead to how congregants view the impact they personally have on how they view the mission of the synagogue, and how ac ve the role is that we play in working to make it a successful one. In short, our members are empowered to share in the improvement of the synagogue and the services we provide to ourselves, our visitors and guests. As board members take part in a process focused on engaging our members in a number of ways, we should all be prepared to par cipate in the ongoing transi on process in as posi ve a way as we can. By doing so we can create a more invi ng synagogue and u lize the “transi on” as an opportunity to create meaningful “change” that involves all our members in a substan ve way. If we are all engaged in the process and the results then no one should feel frustrated, in fact just the opposite, we can all experience the transforma ve act of working together to ensure a long and bright future for our congrega on.Transi ons can be excellent opportuni es to engage in the mission, purpose and func on of the synagogue. Those who do their best to be mo vated serve our congrega on well, and we should remember that all of our members have the ability to volunteer and contribute in some capacity. If we all do so it will serve to reimagining Rodeph Sholom which will result in a strong Conserva ve synagogue with commi ed members who believe that from tradi on through open doors lies a brighter future.

L’shalom,

Mark Block

FROM CANTOR TEPLITZ WITH THANKS!

Cantor Michelle Teplitz will not be joining us this year for the upcoming High Holiday Season. Michelle is keeping extremely busy with Amalya and Elijah and has decided to accept a posi on with a synagogue located in Rockland County that is much closer to where she lives. They have engaged her for the 2016 High Holiday Season.

Cantor Teplitz wants to express her “sincerest thanks for the years spent at Rodeph Sholom” and wants to again say that “it has been a pleasure working with and ge ng to know many members of the congrega on.”

Ari, Amalya, Elijah, and Michelle want to wish everyone a very happy and healthy upcoming holiday season and will certainly look back with great fondness on all the experiences Michelle had with Rodeph Sholom.

In addi on Michelle wants to wish everyone the best of luck for the future.

May you go from strength to strength.

TORAH FUNDWOMEN ENSURING CONSERVATIVE/MASORTI JEWISH EDUCATIONThe theme of the 2015-2016 Torah Fund Campaign was Nat’ah Karem—She plants a vineyard by her own labors from Eishet Chayil in the book of Proverbs. Although this year was not an easy one for our synagogue, Lisa Rappoport and Roz Stein did a yeoman job in solici ng Benefactors and keeping Rodeph Sholom on Women’s League Torah Fund map. Yasher koach for a job well done!

PROGRAM COMMITTEE REPORTCAROL S. WEINSHEL, V.P., PROGRAM AND MEMBERSHIP

Two Brainstorming Mee ngs were held, one during the day and one at night, with approximately 30 people a ending. A er crea ng an extensive list of ideas, a small group of eight worked to refi ne and priori ze the list to create programs with variety and interest. Currently, that is a work-in-progress. Ideas and people are always welcome. With a core group of people, we have accomplished so much – “A Lot of People Doing A Li le” is the goal.

To date, we have had the following programs:

1. AARP Fraud Alert where people learned ps and techniques on how to avoid scams and protect themselves, in person, on the phone and through the Internet.

2. AARP Driving Course designed for 55 and older with a focus on defensive driving, safety strategies and new rules.

3. Haggadah Program – an evening of dinner with a variety of Charoset where some of our members prepared their favorite recipes followed by a presenta on on Haggadot by Rabbi Levin. How exci ng it was to showcase some of our very own Haggadot available in the Grama Resource Center, including an ancient Venice Haggadah, a Chinese Haggadah and our own Nelson-Malin published one.

4. Yom Hashoa – an opportunity for our members to remember their families publicly in a small se ng in our Chapel, followed by a pizza dinner and the movie “No Place on Earth”.

5. German Nazi Hunters, presented by Charles Lansing, Ph.D.,– a con nua on of the UConn Roadshow…part of the Judaic Studies Department where UConn Professors travel to diff erent synagogues.

6. Health and Wellness Fair, with 25 vendors presen ng ps and techniques for either becoming healthy or

remaining healthy. Give-away’s, a silent auc on and demos were part of the excitement as well as a delicious lunch sponsored by one of our members.

7. Upcoming Events:

a. Lifeline Screening – August 17b. Summer Book Sale – date to be announced c. Jason Gaines, Fairfi eld University professor –

Yom Kippur in Israelite folk religion – September 6 d. Art lecture on Jews in Italy by our member, Marcie

Slepian – Sunday, September 18 e. UConn Judaic Studies Department lectures

There’s literally something for everyone. Come on down. Join us, volunteer to help with a program…the camaraderie is great and the sense of accomplishment is wonderful.

On a personal note, I couldn’t be more honored and pleased to serve as Rodeph Sholom’s Vice President of Program and Membership. This is a very exci ng me for us and I look forward to wri ng a new chapter in our rich history.

MembershipIf you have celebrated a birthday or anniversary in May and June, you should have received a personal, handwri en note from your Rodeph Sholom family. We hope they have put a smile on your face and let you know how much we value you.

If you haven’t already sent back your cards with a one-word descrip on of Rodeph Sholom, here is your second opportunity. You will be helping us in our marke ng campaign.

Thank you.

Register for a Wellness Package which includes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with member discount). All five screenings take 60-90 minutes to complete. In order to register for

this event and to receive a $10 discount off any package priced above $129, please call 1-888-653-6441 or visit www.lifelinescreening.com/community-partners.

Our Unique History – Tradition through Open Doors!

Rodeph Sholom began with a very small nucleus responding to purely religious needs well over a century ago.

In November 1908, three men – Nathan Schwartz, Samuel Graves and Nathan Klebansky – took steps to organize a congregation for the purpose of holding religious services, and in 1910 the charter of incorporation for Rodeph Sholom was signed. Burial grounds in Fairfield were purchased shortly thereafter. By March 1923, the small congregation had moved from its first site on Court Street in what is now downtown Bridgeport to a building at the corner of Iranistan and Maplewood Avenues. By 1929, Rodeph Sholom had engaged Rabbi Elihu Rosenblum and was operating a growing religious school. A year later, daily services were inaugurated. Cantor Louis Rosen joined the congregation in 1931 to oversee the Talmud Torah, act as cantor and conduct all services. A merger took place in 1932 with the orthodox Emanuel Congregation.

Now with a membership of sixty families, and under the leadership of Rabbi Leon Spitz, the synagogue became affiliated formally with the Conservative Movement through the United Synagogue of America. Shortly thereafter, Rabbi Harry Nelson arrived, leading the congregation for thirty years until his death at the age of 56 in 1964. In 1936, Mr. Harry Malin began his 33 year tenure as the synagogue’s Education Director.

Rodeph Sholom outgrew the building that aided in the congregation’s growth, and the cornerstone on Park and Capitol Avenues for the new synagogue building was laid on June 6, 1948. In September of that year, the first High Holy Day services were conducted in the social hall of the new building. Cantor David J. Leon joined the Rodeph Sholom family and began his twenty-six years of service. Membership soared with the consecration of a new sanctuary on Shavuot, 1949. In December 1956, the Talmud Torah wing was dedicated, with an enlarged kitchen, elevator, choir loft, library, two social halls and ten new classrooms. Rabbi Sanford Hahn took over as religious leader in 1965 and remained with the congregation until 1973. He was followed by Rabbi Israel C. Stein, and soon thereafter by Cantor Y’shaya Grama. These two men ushered in a new era for Rodeph Sholom—one that was to last for over three decades.

The past decade has been one of transition for the congregation. With short-term clergy leading the congregation at a time of change in both the Conservative Movement and organized religious

observance in America, Rodeph Sholom has continued its service to the Jewish community throughout a period of transition.

As Rodeph Sholom serves the community, its leaders and members do so with respect for the enduring history bestowed upon the congregation by righteous men and women. With an eye to the future, one of success and service to the Jewish community, tradition through open doors for religious, spiritual, social, and cultural moments is Rodeph Sholom!
