Calling ALL businesses!! It’s that time of year where we want to start recognizing the wealth of businesses in our neighborhood that have highlighted innovation, exceptional customer care, support our local community or that en-trepreneurial spirit.
All you need to qualify: Operate a business in Mission BC and receive one nomination in any of the following categories:
THE BIG BANG – An established business that continues to have a strong presence by developing or creating new business pro-grams, platforms and opportunities while continuing to be a contributor to the local community.
The 2014 winner - Prospera Credit Union,a financial education institution providing a full range of financial services delivered by an enthusiastic group of dedicated and highly educated staff. The business has evolved from a basic deposit and lending institution with a desire to meet expressed needs of its mem-bers to one that is now focused on providing personalized financial education to each of its members. To do this they employee a group of educated professionals, in all aspects of loans, mortgages, financial planning and insurance.
POWER OF SMALL - An emerging or exist-ing innovative small business that exempli-fies entrepreneurial spirit and vision with new products, services or process.
The 2014 winner - English Tarts Baking & Co. - a 20- seat tea room (restaurant) on First Ave in downtown Mission. Ruth Janes and Beth Lane are partners in this business that make simple yet sophisticated meals, tradi-tional British style baking and a selection of teas and coffee. They also provide catering services and fill special orders for customers. Their business venture began with a small stall at the Mission City Farmers Market where
they sold baked goods. Their success there evolved into a thriving teashop in the heart of downtown Mission.
LOCAL FOCUS - A business with signifi-cant local focus in their enterprise; be it through manufacturing product locally, or retailing/utilizing products and/or services produced locally and community involve-ment.
The 2014 winner - What’s On! Mission - a magazine dedicated to providing a platform for individuals, organizations, and businesses in Mission to get their message out to the pub-lic in a professional, accessible, and inclusive way. All events that are submitted that are in Mission and open to the public are included in the What's On! Mission Events Calendar for FREE!
CUSTOMER FIRST - A business that dem-onstrates special consideration for their customers; ongoing employee training and
a high level of understanding and commit-ment to service excellence. The hallmark of this award is to offer a friendly, honest, innovative, approachable customer service on a consistent basis.
The 2014 winner - Prominence Nails lo-cated on 1st Avenue. They offer several differ-ent services for customers such as manicures, gel nails, acrylic nails and uniquely designed tips and full nail designs done by professional nail technicians. There are three comfortable massage chairs where clients can sit and relax for pedicures. There are also waxing services available. Prominence Nails is continually growing because of the high quality of work and customer service that keeps their clients fiercely loyal.
COMMUNITY BUILDER - A nonprofit, club or organization that is active in the local community by making a positive difference, involving active collaboration and engage-
ment with others beyond who they serve. The 2014 winner - Mission Adopt A Block
- a non-profit organization administering an anti-litter program in the community since 1994. Over the past 20 years, they have grown into a multi-faceted program that encour-ages citizens of Mission to participate in a pro-active approach to keeping Mission clean through street adoptions, group cleanups, special events and education programs.
Mission Adopt-A-Block Executive Director, Kristin Parsons advised that “Since winning the 2014 Business Excellence Community Builder Award, Mission Adopt-a-Block has seen an increase in exposure to the work that we do with more businesses recognizing the value we bring to the community. We have seen increasing interest from local groups looking for ways to collaborate together and find solutions to the litter and illegal dumping issues that plaque our community. Overall, this award has helped us to honour the hard work of all our amazing volunteers, to be recognized as a strong leader working hard to bring change to the community.”
So get those highly valued customers to tell us why they keep coming back. For your busi-ness the nomination process is simple, you can hand in completed copies of the form to the Chamber office or e mail them to [email protected], or just direct them to our website at www.MissionChamber.bc.ca where they can complete the form on line at “Nominate Me”.

February 2015 Presidents Report
It is with great anticipation that I really look forward to another “growing season” whether it be flowers, crops, businesses or as individuals.
There are a great many reasons to celebrate the past year at the Chamber and to project forward in anticipation of an improving economic environment. To say goodbye to some staff and to welcome others in and to give them our full support.
Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is a hub that can connect you to resources on the north side of the Fraser Valley. We want businesses to thrive in Mission. Through connections, support and advocacy, we work to grow businesses in the region.
Do you know that 70 percent of our member businesses have 5 employees or loss? Membership numbers in the Chamber are stable and while some business has moved on an equal number are coming in. The value the Chamber
adds to and for business is growing along with the membership.
Nominate Me launched last week for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards. Nominate a business who continues to innovate, has a local focus, makes a difference to our community and give their customers exceptional service. Don’t forget the nominations are open to ALL businesses not just chamber members.
We have a strong foundation at the Chamber which is complemented by a Board with a passion for Mission and its business community. We are moving into the election of board members in March. I would encourage and welcome any member to join with the Board as it continues to develop programs for the benefit of all businesses in Mission. Contact me directly to learn more about how you can serve the business community in Mission while guiding your Chamber of Commerce.
Mark March 19, 2015 in the calendar and join us for our Annual General Meeting, to elect new members to the Board of Directors and to get a roundup of the last year.
The Board of Directors serves as the elected policy body for the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and is responsible for approving the annual programs of work and supporting the
budget, overseeing committees and for directing the general activities of the organization. Director positions are a two year commitment with an opportunity to move into the Executive after one year. To be nominated you must be a current member of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and be in good standing. Attendance to monthly board meetings
held on the first Thursday of each month is required, along with a further commitment of no more than 5 hours a month to help with Chamber business.
If you would like further information or to nominate someone for this position or volunteer yourself, please contact the Chamber of Commerce at [email protected] for a nomination form.

Cory Cassel’s passion is build-ing community. Through his work as publisher of What’s On! Mission Magazine, principal at Cory Cassel Productions, and events manager for The Stage at the old Bellevue Hotel, he always offers the public some-thing different and exciting.
Cassel, recognized for the local impact of his glossy and online event, entertainment and leisure magazine, is the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce 2014 Local Focus Business Excellence Award recipient. Cassel became publisher of the five-year-old publication in September 2013.
“To win the award gave me a feel-ing of validation. I finally felt like I was actually a business person. My nominations before came when I was an employee at Mission Com-munity Services and the Bank of Montreal,” he said.
“The magazine is a success be-cause we worked very hard at creat-ing buy-in in the community. We started out by reaching out to the non-profits, giving them a platform to get their message out. We did that by sponsoring space in the maga-zine, not by giving it away.”
Now Cassel’s database includes some 200 people who make things happen in Mission.
But Cassel isn’t resting on his lau-
rels. He relocated to Mission, plans
to expand his magazine into two
other communities and wants to
build a publication for the LGBT
community.
An invitation by The Stage and
Mission Springs owners Brock Rodg-
ers and Ken Brookes for him to bring
new life to the events-only venue is
seen by Cassel as a golden oppor-
tunity.
Look for murder mysteries, drag
queen shows, and theme par-
ties like you’ve never seen before:

Business Excellence is not just about winning awards. It might be nice to have the recognition and the award on the wall, but business excellence is also a process to make your company perform better - to be more profitable.
There are lots of models for Business Excellence, with flow diagrams and self assessment questionnaires, which might seem a bit theoretical and academic for the small business owner, but thinking about business excellence can be a useful approach to improve how your company actually does business.
Some of the areas the excellence models make you think about are leadership, planning, your process management, staff, the customer experience, and
your supplier/partner focus. Think about it, are you practicing business excellence? The models are designed to help you ask the right questions, but they rely on the business owner to figure out how to be excellent.
Changing how a business operates is not an easy process, but you should always be thinking about other ways to work, and thinking about whether they improve any part of the model. Next time you do business with a company that seems to get business excellence right think about the parts of the model they have mastered.
Business excellence is actually an old concept that started in the industrial revolution when a growing manufacturing sector needed to
ensure standardization and quality control. It has evolved into a business performance model that any business can use. The EFQM model defines business excellence as;
“The relentless pursuit of continuous improvement in both an organization’s results and the way in which they are achieved”
It does sound a bit excessive, but it also works. And good luck to all you potential business excellence nominees.
