The January 2016 Edition of Orange Regional Medical Center's Employee Newsletter - Connections
8
A newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers January 2016 - 1 - From The President & CEO Each year we ask employees to help us gauge how well we’re doing to collectively improve Orange Regional as an excellent place to work. We invite all employees to participate in the annual employee engagement survey which launched this past November. I am very impressed with the results of the survey. This year, we showed a significant improvement moving from the 34th percentile to the 44th percentile in the Gallup healthcare database. This is a gigantic increase in one year! Our Grand Mean, which is the average score on a 5 point scale across all of the 12 questions on the survey, jumped from 3.91 to 4.05. I’m also pleased to report that 1,984 employees chose to participate this year, a record high. These gains are the largest and most significant we’ve ever seen in our 8 years of taking this survey. Leaders have received your team’s scorecard and will share it with you in the near future. As in past years, each department will work together on celebrating their team’s strengths as well as putting a plan in place on an action item of their choosing. In the meantime, please consider your own engagement. There are many continuing and new initiatives within the hospital for you to become involved in. Think about what you can do to make a positive difference in your unit or department in 2016. We want you to be challenged, engaged and make a difference! At Orange Regional, we value staff input and want our workplace to be one where everyone feels like they are contributing to the best of their abilities. Increasing overall employee engagement allows us to continuously improve our workplace which brings us closer to fulfilling our mission of providing exceptional healthcare to our patients. Congratulations on an outstanding survey and thank you to everyone who chose to participate. Sincerely, Scott Batulis, President & CEO Orange Regional Medical Center was recently named winner of the 2015 Silver Performance Excellence State Baldrige Award . The award recognizes a commitment to excellence and a systems approach to improving organizational performance. Our organization completed a rigorous application process and subsequent site visit conducted by a team of Baldrige Examiners. The organization was evaluated against the Baldrige Excellence Framework that focuses on six interrelated process categories and a results category. These areas represent essential aspects of managing and performing as an organization: Leadership, Strategy, Customers, Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management, Workforce, Operations and Results. These criteria help an organization reach their goals, achieve results and become more competitive and sustainable. The aim is to align an organization’s mission, goals, and strategic plans with its people, resources and processes, to achieve great customer-patient outcomes. The Baldrige Criteria helps an organization answer three questions: Is your organization doing as well as it could? How do you know? What and how should your organization improve? In February, we will receive an extensive feedback report that will identify organization key strengths and opportunities for improvement in the seven categories detailed above, an external perspective that will help guide us in the future. This award is a reflection of the hard work by all in our organization. Congratulations to all in achieving this award and your commitment to operational excellence! A special shout-out to the Baldrige Teams and to a few individuals who deserve special acknowledgement for leading this initiative: Rose Baczewski, Fred Conklin, Peggy Cronin, Katie Haun, Natasha Mele, Kelly Roth, Jayne O’Malley, Jean-Paul Vallet and Deb Cole. More information to follow on the awards ceremony and the continuing journey in 2016. Volunteer Recognized for Patient Service

Starting in 2013, Pat Jerido of Environmental Services, recognized an opportunity in the Coffee Shop to collect change from generous customers. Since then, Pat has collected over $4,200 for the Lend a Hand for Kids Campaign to support the Pediatric Center. In this picture, Pat presents Foundation President, Bill Dauster, with a recent donation.

Thanks to donations like this, we have completed the $2.1 Million Lend a Hand for Kids Campaign to support the creation of the new Pediatric Center. Though we raised the total amount promised, the Lend a Hand for Kids Campaign continues to raise funds for the expansion of the program. To make a gift to the Lend a Hand Campaign or other hospital initiatives, call the Foundation Office at 333-2333.

Ray W. Moody, M.D. Breast Center Volunteer, Joanne Birnberg, was recognized by a grateful patient for going above and beyond her call of duty. Joanne followed up with the patient after helping to locate a beloved piece of jewelry she misplaced during a visit to the Breast Center. “When I arrived home, there a message on my answering machine that it was found. The warm greeting was reason enough to write this letter,” wrote the patient. In this picture, Michele Worden, Regina Toomey Bueno and Debbie Linken present Joanne with her grateful patient pin.

Energy Conservation and Sustainability Committee

Orange Regional’s Energy Conservation and Sustainability Committee, established two years ago to increase our organization’s sustainability, is moving forward with their top initiative for 2015 - Hand Dryers. All of the paper towel dispensers in the public restrooms will be replaced with electric hand dryers to reduce the hospital’s Carbon Footprint. Making this change is not only cost effective but it will eliminate 14,674 pounds of waste created by paper towel usage and will save approximately 125 trees a year. By taking this step, we are helping to qualify for LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) credits which can be applied toward a LEED® Certification - a designation used for green buildings, which is a future initiative being explored by the Committee. For more information about the Committee, please contact Miguel Rodrigues at 333-0309 or [email protected].

Wallkill PBA Holiday Visit A Success

Connections January 2016

A Season of Giving

The Town of Wallkill PBA renewed its commitment to visiting patients of Orange Regional again this past holiday season with a cast of characters including The Grinch, Olaf, Snoopy and Elf! The group, who has visited the hospital for the past three years, brightened the day for many patients throughout the hospital, delivering holiday cards and PBA water bottles.

Providing Holiday Cheer to Patients

On December 24, Orange Regional Employees and Volunteers visited units to sing holiday carols and distribute gifts to inpatients. The visits lifted the spirits of those staying at the hospital during the holiday season. The carolers, all donned in festive attire, sang songs and delivered small plants and big smiles.

Rowley Family Birthing Center Makes Ornaments

Every year, the Rowley Family Birthing Center distributes holiday ornaments to new moms and infants on the unit. The tradition of ornament distribution was started by Heidi Mosher, RN in 2009. All new moms are encouraged to pick their own special ornament marked “Baby’s First Christmas” from the Rowley Family Birthing Center tree. For patients who do not celebrate Christmas, they can select a generic baby memento that can be personalized with the infant’s name or date of birth.

Our hospital bustled with holiday visitors and donations throughout the month of December! Thank you to all of the thoughtful community members who helped Orange Regional make the holidays a little brighter for our patients.

Operation Dalmatian

On December 15, the Town of Walden Fire Department visited Orange Regional to pick up new, unwrapped toys generously donated to Operation Dalmatian by Orange Regional employees and members of the community. The fire department, along with "Santa Claus," visited with inpatient rehabilitation patients to deliver candy canes. Toys were distributed to over 200 Orange County families in time for the holidays. For more information about Operation Dalmatian, please contact Katherine Bergmann at 333-1342 or [email protected].

Recycling Update

All paper recycling is now done through the HIPAA bins. Please also note that the blue bins at the Pavilion have been permanently removed.

In 2015, the Radiation Oncology team created a program based on its Gallup scores and discussion with staff. Staff voiced a need to be recognized for their achievements and, together, they created a peer recognition program at the Goshen off site and Pavilion, in which staff can give an Outstanding Wonderful Leader (OWL) hoot to another employee.

Employees write a name and a brief description of what their team member did that was outstanding, wonderful, or reflective of being a leader on one of the owl cutouts and place it on the tree. At the end of each month, OWL nominations are read out loud to the staff. The employee with the most OWLs is employee of the month and receives a $10 gift card of their choice.

Betty Koshy, who created the OWL program for employee recognition (peer to peer) within the Radiation Oncology Department, was presented with a unique owl figurine by her leaders for illustrating the characteristics of the OWL program. Congrats Betty!
