Executive Director Roger E. NixSecond Thoughts

Being Baptist During a Pastoral Transition

Noted Church historian and expert on all things Baptist, Dr. Bill Leonard, has stated, “being Baptist is oftenmessy”. That observation is especially true when Baptist congregations are navigating significant transitionslike the call of a pastor. As I’ve trained and coached Pastor Search Teams over the past twenty-five years I’vealways tried to work from these basic guiding principles:

establish a good search process by seeking training from a qualified person.

protect the integrity of the process through appropriate communication.

expect absolute confidentiality within the search team void of personal agendas.

encourage the congregation to view the pastoral transition as a time of spiritual discernment needingto be bathed in individual and corporate prayer.

At all times, trust the Spirit, speak the truth and trust the people.

Over the past decade or so the pastor search process has undergone several major changes. As I meet with asmany as ten or more search teams a year to offer training, counsel and coaching one thing seems consistent;how churches find and call pastors is inconsistent. Most searchteams fall into the trap of trying to customize the process, shortenthe time period and rush to the call due to pressure from the con-gregation.

I am not the first equipper of pastor search teams to noticechanges and significant influences of new trends in the process.Thom Rainer and Ed Stetzer have documented lists of major trends. Here are a few you might expect to see ifyour church finds itself seeking new pastoral leadership in the near future.

1. Social media has become a major reference to check on potential pastors. More churches and pastorsearch committees are looking at blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media venues of potentialcandidates.

2. Two background checks are more common: criminal and credit. I believe a full panel of checks shouldbe done including verifying degrees and a national sexual predator check.

3. More leadership questions are being asked of prospective pastors. Today those considering these pas-tors want to know more about his leadership qualities. Why? Previous pastoral problems had almostnothing to do with theology; they just had terrible leadership skills.

4. The candidates church website is thoroughly examined. It has become a primary source for informationabout a prospective pastor. They certainly expect to hear sermon podcasts there, but they are lookingto also evaluate the pastor by the quality and the content of the site.

5. Fewer search teams are going to the prospective pastor's church to hear them preach.

6. Churches are depending less on traditional resources to seek prospective pastors. More are dependingon informal networks and developing their senior pastors from within through a mentoring/nurturingprocess.

7. Search teams are focusing more on relationship issues than academic concerns. Questions about theemotional intelligence of a candidate are dominate. Is the pastor self-aware, moody or temperamental, motivated and empathetic? Does this candidate really like to pastor people?

Yes, being a Baptist can be especially messy when seeking new pastoral leadership. But you know, I don’t wanta Bishop, District Superintendent or any other denominational leader sending my church a pastor of theirchoosing. Choosing a search team and seeking the Spirit’s leadership requires faith, discernment, trust and ahealthy process. That’s the Baptist way of congregational autonomy. It’s not perfect nor are we.

Mentoring Matters – a Caring Connections Ministry Impact Story

Michelle was living in a nine-month residential addiction recovery program with her three young boys, her youngest

born in July. She began Phlebotomy school in August. She was only able to work one day per week due to the recov-ery program schedule and school constraints thus adding to her stress. She earned a limited income and was strug-gling to ind housing when she graduated the recovery program.

In an effort to reduce her stress and help create a stable environment, her mentor, Theresa, did several things that dramatically impacted Michelle’s life. Theresa rallied her own friendsto raise funds to offset some of Michelle’s rent the irst six months while she inished school allowing her to work more. Theresa baby-sits Michelle’s three young boys all day and over-night once per week just to give Michelle a break and time to study.

Finally, Theresa rallied her friends to furnish Michelle’s apartment, because she had nothingmoving out of the recovery program. These acts of kindness demonstrated the love of Christ to Michelle making herfeel “worth ighting for.” Michelle has been overwhelmed by the outpouring of unconditional love from Theresa, her friends and church community.

I love this story, because it represents the many layers of our services. Not only is Michelle learning valuable life skillsfrom her mentor and our classes, but she is witnessing Theresa’s faith, the support of a church family, and seeing Je-sus through the kindness of Christians. Her needs are being met, lifting a high level of stress. Theresa’s friends havebecome educated on the obstacles of women living in poverty and are being given the opportunity to be the handsand feet of Jesus on the front line in their own community. This is Caring Connections Ministry—connecting women toChrist, community and one another.
