“I didn’t know you played the guitar!” For the past two summers I’ve fi elded this reaction, and my reply has been the same: “I’m but a serviceable VBS guitarist!” In fact, before VBS 2015 I had last played the guitar during VBS 2014. There’s something about VBS and the children of FBC that makes me pick up a guitar and belt out camp songs. I pick up the guitar because it gives me the best view in the house. From the vantage point at the front of the room, strumming wildly and singing loudly, I get a clear view of our children shedding their inhibitions, expressing their distinct personalities, singing with one another, laughing with one another, leaning on one another, and experiencing the care of the adults and youth who teach them of the love of God that surrounds them. Our 2015 VBS was a wonderful success, serving over 100 children and their families with a stellar team of volunteers and leaders! The view at the front of the VBS opening is a snapshot of our church’s excellent ministry with children and their families, where we seek in a variety of ways throughout the year to help children laugh, play, grow in friendship with one another, and ultimately put their faith in the God who has called them “beloved.” We do so remembering Jesus’ call in Matthew 9:37 as he lifts a child and says, “Whoever welcomes one such as this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.” I heard a story recently from one of our newer families here at First Baptist who had their young child

sitting with them in worship somewhere near the back behind several older church members with children grown. They noticed heads turning from time to time as their child rustled papers or asked questions. Then during the greeting time, the older woman sitting in front of them turned and said, “I want you to know that hearing those noises was just the best part of my week!” Welcoming the children helps us to practice what it means to welcome all who are vulnerable, just as Jesus did. In doing so we even come to welcome the child within ourselves. As we continue to seek to embody this welcoming and thriving ministry to children and their families, we are thrilled to have Christina McCord join us as Minister to Children and Families. Christina was affi rmed by the congregation on June 28 after an enthusiastic recommendation from our Search Committee. As one who worked alongside the Search Committee, I could not be any more excited about the gifts and experience Christina brings – and I say that as a pastor and also as a father of three. I’m excited for you to know Christina more and experience her leadership, and I hope we will all fi nd ways to encourage the vision and growth she brings. Christina’s fi rst day is August 10, just in time for the start of the fall schedule. At a recent staff planning retreat this June, we reviewed notes and planning from June 2014. At that retreat, we were in the midst of transition, hoping to fi nd the right person to continue the strong and growing children’s ministry that Virginia Reynolds, Shelly Worsley and others had led to that time. One of our prayers was for God to help us “Find the right children’s minister.” As we reviewed this 2014 prayer a year later, we gave thanks for God’s leadership in our call of Christina. But we also recognized that we did not merely fi nd one “right” minister over the last year, but two, and we give thanks once again for the ministry that Ashley Gill Harrington has shared with us as our Interim Minister over the last 12 months. Ashley has not merely continued the growing ministry to our children and families, but also served as an excellent minister to our wider congregation. As she transitions at the end of August we celebrate the gifts she has given to us, and also ask God’s blessing as she remains open to the next opportunity for her to live fully into her pastoral call. I hope you can see what I see from my vantage point – these are thrilling days for the children’s ministry of our church. And I hope it’s enough to motivate all of us to pick up whatever serviceable tools and talents we have – guitars and otherwise – to give ourselves to the continued thriving of our children.

Kate Kitchen TransitionKate Kitchen recently announced her plans to transition from her service as Homebound Minister with First Baptist Church. For Kate, this is a move toward new opportunities as she down-sizes and moves to Southport. Our Personnel Committee and Pastoral Staff will be considering how to best continue this important ministry in the life of our church, but fi rst we celebrate Kate’s ministry with us and the many gifts given and received throughout her tenure as Homebound Minister. As Kate shared with the congregation on July 19, “In one fell swoop, with 85-90 homebound members, God GAVE ME the BIGGEST FAMILY any girl could ever have... And I will remember and continue to love—my First Baptist family, the biggest family a girl could ever hope for.” Kate, know of our continued love and appreciation for you, and we hope you remember the way back home!

Sunday, August 23, 4 - 7 pm, Camp Weaver

Our offi cial end-of-summer celebration will be the annual Baptism, Barbecue and Eventide Worship at Camp Weaver. We will have a potluck dinner and Lee King

and Co. will provide BBQ for $2 per person. We ask everyone attending to provide side dishes or desserts to share for the meal. Beverages and paper producsts are provided. There is a shaded outdoor amphitheater area for seating, but you can bring a chair or blanket. The Y does allow swimming in the lake and that is always fun whether you are swimming or watching! There is a roped off beach entry area for small children. The rest of the lake is open and everyone has fun bouncing on the water trampoline or jumping off the platform onto the blob and sending a friend fl ying into the lake or just sliding down the water slide! Life guards will be on duty and life vests are required and provided, but if you have your own please bring it. This is a wonderful afternoon of fellowship and fun whether you are swimming in the lake or relaxing and enjoying some great conversation and fellowship. We will also have our lake baptism service and fi nish our summer Eventide worship with singing and scripture.Directions to Camp Weaver: Lee Street east until it ends, turn right onto Youngs Mill Road, make a left onto Mill Point Road and the camp is 3/4 mile on the right on Tapawingo Trail. Follow signs to lake.

skills to be successful in the beginning of their academic career. Volunteers are needed to serve and to just have fun! Community Housing SolutionsPaint the Town 2015 – Saturday, September 19 from 8 am to 4 pm

Paint the Town is an annual event to preserve affordable housing in Guilford County. Each year, Community Housing Solultions (CHS) partners with

local businesses, corporations, and faith organizations to do exterior repairs, painting, and landscaping for one neighborhood in a single day. At the July Church Conference, the church approved a one-time gift of $2,500 supporting the CHS “Paint the Town” event. Greetings! The summer has been busy! We have been delivering meals to the Grace Community Fellowship Dinner and to our Mobile Meal friends, donating food and clothing to Greensboro Urban Ministry and StepUp Ministry, getting our hands dirty at Out of the Garden

Project, and taking Missions trips to New York and Greenville, S.C. Our hands and hearts have spoken of God’s love and care. What could be better than sitting on the fl oor for 17 hours in an airport in Africa with no running water in the bathrooms, oppressive heat, and the terminal

roof leaking during a Monsoon? The answer…anything! And what could be better than being in God’s will? The answer…nothing. Recently, Helen experienced both with our TeachBeyond work in Central Africa. The recent civil war in CAR caused the seminary in Bangui, to close after 37 years of training pastors. Up until then, seminary students’ families were educated in a school of 1,200 kids. After the confl ict ended, the UN protected school needed help to re-open. They asked TeachBeyond to partner with them by providing services to 5 central African countries and the re-opened school which now has 2,000 students. The purpose of Helen’s visit was to serve as a consultant providing insights, training, and guidance in formulating a 3 year plan for Christ-centered education. Her group was among the fi rst outsiders to visit CAR following the civil war and the work and the people made it all worthwhile. This was affi rmed by an African teacher who said with tears in her eyes, “For you to come see us at this time in our country must mean you love us.” The staff and the students have the burning desire to learn and they place a strong value on a Christ- centered education. Christina will begin her work at First Baptist on August 10 with some overlap time with Ashley to transition the ministry. Christina shares, “Ministering to children and their families truly is my passion. I love developing relationships with people and, through those relationships, helping them gain a deeper understanding of their relationships with God. It’s time for a NEW FBC Church Directory We heard your requests for an updated directory! We decided to rethink the familiar Church Directory process that we have always known and we are taking a different approach to a Church Directory. A printed option will also be available for a small fee to cover printing costs for anyone who would like one. For computer, smart phone and tablet users, the Member site and the Churchlife app are secure, online options for accessing the church database. We will be using ACS, our church database company that is connected to or Member Site. The photo sessions will be done in-house and a very quick and simple process. We will snap a quick digital photo on select days if you choose this option. The other option is to submit your own digital photos for the directory online via the FBC website and Member Sign-In site. You can submit your family/individual digital photos at your convenience and do not have to worry about a photography appointment. Digital photos also allow the member site to be updated continuously as people submit their own photos.Option 1: IF you want FBC to take a digital photo of you/your family, drop by the Heritage room (across from the Chapel) on Sundays, August 23 and 30 and September 13 and 20 from 8:30-9:30 am or following worship.Option 2: Submit your family/individual digital photos online via the website/member site. Follow these steps. Note: Photos cannot exceed 10MB.1. Decide which family/individual digital photo(s) you

want to upload.2. Go to FBC website: www.fbcgso.org3. Sign in to Member Site – link/button is at the top of

the home page of the website.4. Sign in or follow steps to create a Login.5. Select “My Profi le” under the Home drop down

menu.6. On the “My Profi le” page, select the EDIT button on

the top right of the page OR click the pencil icon to open the “Change Request” page.

7. For an Individual photo – click the “Personal Photo” tab on the top right of the page. Then click the link to upload a new individual photo.

8. For a Family photo – click the “Family Info” tab on the top right of the page. Click the “Family Photo” tab on the right, then use the link to upload a new family photo.

9. Once your change request is approved your photo will be visible on the Member Database and used for the Directory.

What’s Cooking in the FBC Kitchen this Fall!

Again this past year our kitchen staff has prepared over 13,500 meals. There is no way I would

or could do what I do without my faithful sous chef Theo and our part-time staff and kitchen volunteers. This year we are losing our faithful “cashiers” Diane and James Watkins. They have been an integral part of our kitchen volunteer team for many years and we will miss them. I also want to welcome our newest volunteer, Carolyn Ripley. The kitchen will be closed during the month of August for annual cleaning. We will resume our Wednesday night meals on September 2 with our Fall Kick-Off and Potluck Dinner on the grounds. Theo will cook his famous fried chicken while church members and guests are asked to bring their favorite entrees, sides and desserts. Please make a reservation for this meal so we will have an idea of how much chicken to prepare. Our fi rst meal back in the Fellowship Hall will be September 9.

MAKING RESERVATIONS:Each year we ask that NEW “standing” or “one-time” reservations be made again prior to September 2. Please be mindful of your reservations status to help us save on our food costs which continue to increase annually. • Reservations are due no later than

noon on Tuesday.• Cancellations are due no later

noon on Wednesday.

July Church Conference SummaryThe monthly Church Conference took place on Sunday afternoon, July 19, 2015 in the Fellowship Hall. Church Moderator, Hazel Fisher presided. The following motions were approved by the congregation.

Pat Wilson, Missions Committee Chair, made the following motions: Motion 1: On behalf of the Missions Committee, the Finance Committee and the Deacons, I move that gifts received by First Baptist Church earmarked for the purchase of a refrigerator/freezer for use by Amy Murphy’s organization be expended for that purpose.NOTE: Amy Murphy is known as the “Chicken Lady”. Currently, $4,600 has been received, and additional funds are anticipated.Motion 2: On behalf of the Missions Committee, the Finance Committee and the Deacons, I move that a one-time gift of $1,705.50 to the YWCA Family Shelter for two months’ utilities expenses be approved, funds to come from the Great Commission Fund.Motion 3: On behalf of the Missions Committee, the Finance Committee and the Deacons, I move that a one-time gift of $2,500 to support the Community Housing Solutions “Paint the Town” event to be held on September 19, 2015, be approved, funds to come from the Great Commission Fund.
