After being eligible for more than a decade to be in Cleveland’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the three-man Canadian rock band Rush will finally be inducted on the 18th of April at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast on HBO a month later.

The band’s first live show as newly-minted Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be on the 23rd of April in Austin at the Frank Erwin Center. They will be playing classic staples like Tom Sawyer and

Subdivisions but will focus on their award-winning new album, Clockwork Angels. For the Clockwork Angels tour, which began in 2012, they’ve added a small string section, a first for a band who have been the only musicians onstage since 1974.

You may be asking, who is this band? (And if you are asking, I pause to weep for you.) Rush consists of vocalist/bassist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer/lyricist Neil Peart. The band is not known for radio hits. They’ve always kept a low and humble profile, wanting to keep their personal lives personal. Their songs aren’t about the usual things rock songs are about. The lyrics, penned by Peart, are always cerebral and sometimes other-worldly. Geddy, Alex and Neil have no tattoos or body-piercings (at least that we fans know of!) and they are husbands and fathers. They have a noticeable absence in the tabloids. Their music speaks of honesty and integrity and has inspired and uplifted their fans for nearly four decades.

Rush is also one of the last classic rock bands still recording new music and performing live with all of the original members. Their longevity is a testament to the fact that they actually like each other. Geddy and Alex met in Junior High School when they were twelve years old and they still live about four blocks away from each other. They joke about “the new guy,” Neil, who joined the band in 1974 replacing original drummer John Rutsey. They still enjoy each other’s company and the music they create, and it certainly shows when they are onstage. The 2010 documentary, Beyond the Lighted Stage, chronicles the band’s history and their enduring friendship.

Seeing Rush live is an amazing experience and should not be missed. You’ll thank me later.

It is hard to imagine that in what we consider a free world there are 27 million slaves. Perhaps even more difficult to believe, Texas is widely considered a major destination and transit point for these slaves in America according to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

A little over a year ago, a group from Antioch Community Church in Waco decided to take action against human trafficking by forming UnBound, an anti-trafficking organization. Their mission is to see the church mobilized to end human trafficking.

UnBound focuses on awareness and education, prayer, rescue and after-care, and public policies. Elizabeth Griffin, director of strategic growth for UnBound, said that right now they are targeting sex trafficking.

According to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, sex trafficking includes “the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision or obtaining (of victims) through force, fraud or coercion for sexual exploitation.”

UnBound is ultimately made up of volunteers. Along with praying and creating awareness in their communities, Griffin said the volunteers have teams that meet and monitor the internet to match missing person files. They report anything suspicious they see to local law enforcement.

In the past year members have spoken at Baylor and Dallas Baptist University, as well as religious groups and churches in the area to create awareness. They also hold trainings for professionals in law enforcement, teachers, and the medical profession to help identify young girls and women who are trafficked.

Griffin said one of the biggest things we can do to help is be the eyes and ears in our communities and know the signs of trafficking. She also said everyone should have the trafficking hotline number in their cell phone (1-888-3737-888).

“They (the girls) are hidden in plain sight,” said Griffin. “They’re in Target, or Wal-Mart, or schools, or churches.”

Runaways, along with women and young girls in tight financial situations, are often the most vulnerable. Griffin said young girls can also be targeted on social media sites like Facebook, and parents need to be aware to reduce the risk of girls being trafficked.

“Being aware led to two rescues we were a part of last year,” Griffin said.

UnBound also helps raise money for the rescue and after-care of trafficked girls. According to the International Justice Mission, it takes about $5,000 to rescue one person.

Since the girls often don’t have great families to go back to, they need to be placed in a safe house, and often need help with job training and obtaining a vehicle for transportation according to Griffin.

When asked about why it’s important for everyone to get involved, Griffin said, “It matters. It’s not a far away thing. I think history will look at our day and wonder why we didn’t do more. We think it’s too big, but every little bit helps.”

The popular DVD and Blu-ray kiosk company Redbox, Verizon Communications Inc. and Coinstar came together for a joint venture, which launched in 2012.

There were no details concerning how much money it would cost or what type of movies or TV shows they would have. Members of the companies had been tight-lipped about the information for the project.

Parties involved are pleased with the business decisions and excited about expanding boundaries

further than just the little red machine that sits outside of a local Wal-Mart or a CVS Pharmacy.

Officials from the companies are sure they will be able to provide people with convenience and more possibilities when it comes to choosing which way they want to watch a movie. They are also confident that streaming videos will give Redbox a much needed platform to reach consumers all around the world.

The partnership combined the easy rental of movies from Redbox, along with streaming the movies online, and on-demand services from Verizon as well.

Customers will still have to pay a somewhat affordable price for a monthly subscription, but it will still be cheaper than its rival company, Netflix.

Although there has been a slight increase in price at the kiosks, it has not slowed down consumers’ desires to continue doing business with the company. Redbox offers a selection of newer DVDs versus Netflix, which, due to regulations, has a larger selection of older movies.

In the future, Redbox will also have a larger selection of older movies which will have streaming capabilities.

Netflix, once the leading place for renting movies has now begun to struggle, especially in 2011. Many consumers are getting turned off by the fact that after they finish one movie and then return it; they have to wait an additional two days to receive another movie from their list.

The company has split its streaming and mailing DVD services, which resulted in hiking customers’ bills. Since Netflix has agreed to extend its 28-day wait for new releases to a 56-day wait for Warner Bros., the anticipation for others has driven them to visit the nearest Redbox.

Considering the convenience that both companies offer, their decision to combine their effort may be a success.

I personally like both Netflix and Redbox. I find myself using my Nextflix app on my Kindle Fire to watch TV shows, whereas if I want to see a newer movie, I use Redbox. I also like that Redbox sends promo codes which offer a free movie rental, or a discount. With all the rumors and speculation, only the reactions of the consumers will tell if this joint venture will prove to be better than Netflix.

My Acupuncture Experienceby Julie Cordova

Everyone is entitled to a mid-life crisis, but this is ridiculous. In my defense, I’ve been through a lot of major life changes and an incredible amount of stress in the past six months, but this eccentric notion was more of a bucket list thing. It is part mysticism, part mystery, and part magic. It’s an ancient Chinese secret.

I’ve always been curious about the traditional Chinese practice of acupuncture, but I was quite sure I’d never let anyone poke needles in me, even if it was medically effective. But it was intriguing nonetheless, and when a friend shared her experience I knew I had to try it.

Acupuncture is used to treat a variety of symptoms - from pain management, to allergies, to anxiety - and when I did some research, I found a large body of scientific evidence to support its effectiveness. The needles are hair-thin and my friend testified that the procedure was not painful. I was desperate for relief from a variety of unpleasant stress-related symptoms and was willing to try anything. In fact, I was prepared to be poked like a pincushion on the off-chance that one of those needles would cure me of something…anything!

When I arrived at the clinic I had to fill out the usual reams of paperwork before being ushered into the practitioner’s office. I had chosen a student practitioner because it was much cheaper. I’m stupidly fearless that way. There were two of them actually, and they took turns looking at my tongue and speaking in some esoteric code about their observations. I tried not to take it personally when one of them, upon checking my pulse, remarked that my chi was slippery. The first needle was inserted at my hairline, in the center of my forehead, and I barely felt it go in. My eyes were clenched tight, though, because I can’t watch these type of things or I will pass out. I ended up with about twenty needles in various locations. With each insertion, I felt a rush of euphoria, like I’d been slipped some fast-acting drug. For days afterward I felt almost weightless. The anxiety had lifted and the sun was shining.

I do believe that acupuncture worked for me and I will probably get more treatments. And I’m glad that I can check a new experience off my bucket list! (For more information or to schedule an acupuncture appointment, go to https://aoma.edu/.)

Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. Endowed Scholarship

The Albert “Chato” Gauna, Jr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship is given to a student who has an APPROVED DEGREE PLAN leading to an Associate Degree from Central Texas College. Financial need shall be the first consideration. A student who receives this award must take a minimum of six (6) credit hours and maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 an each semester receive a GPA of 2.0 or better. Class can be taken at Central Texas College District or Service Area campuses.

The passing of a loved one is probably one of the hardest things that anyone can deal with, but we all know that they live on in our hearts and minds. The love we have for them goes on always and forever. Setting up a scholarship in memory of a loved one can be beneficial to their family as it helps preserve

the memory of their loved one.

Albert "Chato" Gauna Jr. was a very loving and compassionate person that was taken from us way to

soon. His hopes and dreams of attending college were shattered when he was taken at the age of 19. His legacy lives on through the Endowed Scholarship so that someone's dream may be fulfilled.

The Endowment Scholarship has been set-up and will provide a student with some financial support—but not much. This is where you can help. We are seeking assistance in hopes of raising a full-year’s tuition for the Scholarship recipient.

Contact Jessica Rivera at 254-423-5071 or [email protected] for information on how to donate to this scholarship.

Every little bit will help and will be greatly appreciated from both our family and the student that is awarded this wonderful Scholarship.

If you would like to apply for this foundation please contact Central Texas College Foundation.

Texas Talent Musicians Association Presents: Tejano Fan Fair 2013

by Rachel Rodriguez

The Texas Talent Musicians Association is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization whose purpose is to promote professional excellence; a better understanding and greater appreciation for Tejano music; and to provide a public forum for songwriters, performers and musicians in order to recognize their artistic efforts and achievements through the annual Tejano Music Awards and related events. Texas Talent Musicians Association is based in San Antonio, Texas: “The Tejano Music Capital of the World.”®

The 2013 Tejano Fan Fair in San Antonio at the Market Square was held on March 14th -17th which was packed with an abundance of excellent food, beverages and music on six different stages. If you have never been to the fan fair before, there are two stages on San Saba Street (north and south) and two stages on Santa Rosa (north and south). There is also a stage on Dolorosa St and one in the middle of the Square. This year the middle stage was sponsored by BNET radio. The Hidalgo Plaza was set up with an artist booth for autograph sessions. All this fabulous music is always free to the public with plenty of delicious stands offering everything from burgers, BBQ to tacos.

For those who wanted to get away from the music for a moment, the Historic Market Square was open with all the fantastic little shops that remind me of the Mercado’s in Mexico.

The Fan Fair is a catalyst for the great city of San Antonio to burst out with Tejano performances all over the city. Music also spilled over to Cattleman’s Square where the headliners performed. In addition, the River Walk hosted many concerts at the amphitheater.

Performances ranged from fan favorites Little Joe y La Familia, Shelly Lares, and Mike Torres III and the Groveland Chicano Band. There were performers from as far away as Coloroado, Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, Washington State, California and Michigan. There were also up and coming artist new to the Teajno scene with over 100+ bands performing simultaneously on the stages.
